Abstract:Alloying is a long-established strategy to tailor properties of metals for specific applications, thus retaining or enhancing the principal elemental characteristics while offering additional functionality from the added elements. We propose a similar approach to the control of properties of two-dimensional transition metal carbides known as MXenes. MXenes (Mn+1Xn) have two sites for compositional variation: elemental substitution on both the metal (M) and carbon/nitrogen (X) sites presents promising routes for tailoring the chemical, optical, electronic, or mechanical properties of MXenes. Herein, we systematically investigated three interrelated binary solid-solution MXene systems based on Ti, Nb, and/or V at the M-site in a M2XTx structure (Ti2-yNbyCTx, Ti2-yVyCTx, and V2-yNbyCTx, where Tx stands for surface terminations) showing the evolution of electronic and optical properties as a function of composition. All three MXene systems show unlimited solubility and random distribution of metal elements in the metal sublattice. Optically, the MXene systems are tailorable in a nonlinear fashion, with absorption peaks from ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelength. The macroscopic electrical conductivity of solid solution MXenes can be controllably varied over 3 orders of magnitude at room temperature and 6 orders of magnitude from 10 to 300 K. This work greatly increases the number of nonstoichiometric MXenes reported to date and opens avenues for controlling physical properties of different MXenes with a limitless number of compositions possible through M-site solid solutions.
Controllable Patterning of Porous MXene (ti3c2) by Metal‐Assisted Electro‐Gelation Method

Abstract:Since discovered in 2011, transition metal carbides or nitrides (MXenes) have attracted enormous attention due to their unique properties. Morphology regulation strategies assembling 2D MXene sheets into 3D architecture have endowed the as‐formed porous MXene with a better performance in various fields. However, the direct patterning strategy for the porous MXene into integration with multifunctional and multichannel electronic devices still needs to be investigated. The metal‐assisted electro‐gelation method the authors propose can directly generate porous‐structured MXene hydrogel with a tunable feature. By electrolyzing the sacrificial metal, the released metal cations initiate the electro‐gelation process during which electrostatic interactions occur between cations and the MXene sheets. A high spatial resolution down to micro‐meter level is achieved utilizing the method, enabling high‐performance hydrogels with more complex architectures. Electronics prepared through this metal‐assisted electro‐gelation process have shown promising applications of the porous MXene in energy and biochemical sensing fields. Energy storage devices with a capacitance at 33.3 mF cm−2 and biochemical sensors show prominent current responses towards metabolites (sensitivity of H2O2: 165.6 µA mm−1 cm−2; sensitivity of DA: 212 nA µm−1 cm−2), suggesting that the metal‐assisted electro‐gelation method will become a prospective technique for advanced fabrication of MXene‐based devices.
Tailoring Ti3CNT MXene via an acid molecular scissor

Abstract:MXenes are attracting growing attentions from scientific community owing to their decent electric and ionic conductivity, highly accessible surface area, and the presence of redox-active sites. Herein, an acid molecular scissor is proposed to artificially tailor Ti3CNT x MXene at the atomic scale and create defective nanosheets and redox-active sites. The tailored Ti3CNT x MXene exhibits a significantly improved electrochemical performance with the specific capacitance reaching 376 F g−1 and 230.68 mF cm−2, much higher than that of original Ti3CNT x MXene (237 F g−1 and 168.27 mF cm−2). The tailored Ti3CNT x MXene was further assembled into a micro-supercapacitor, which demonstrates a high volumetric capacitance of 250 F cm−3, a high energy density of 12.46 mW h cm−3 at a power density of 0.43 W cm−3. This work offers a new strategy to reinvent MXenes at the atomic scale with largely enhanced redox-active sites for energy storage, catalysis, solid lubricants and electromagnetic interference shielding.

Abstract:Layered MXenes are normally obtained by chemically etching the A element of MAX phases (M is the early transition element, A is the main group element, and X is nitrogen or carbon) by using fluoride-containing compounds or a Lewis acidic molten salt (LAMS) for example. After removing the A element in the MAX phase, the exposed M atoms can spontaneously coordinate with anions, such as F – , O 2– , OH – or Cl – , as the termination (T) species (M n +1 X n T x ). In MXenes, cations, cationic surfactants and organic molecules can be intercalated into the van der Waals gaps, facilitating delamination of the layers. MAX phases, MXenes and intercalated MXenes offer interesting platforms for constructing nanomaterials with different chemical building blocks. However, the capability for such structural editing is currently limited to a few types of constituent element and terminating group.

Abstract:<p>MXenes, layered transition metal carbides/nitrides, have already received considerable attention in various research areas including but not limited to energy storage/conversion and photo/electrocatalysis. In fact, the intrinsic property of MXenes is highly tunable by controlling the surface terminations and interlayer spacing. Moreover, synchrotron radiation X‐ray characterizations have shown high potential for exploring the causal relationship between the properties and structure of MXenes. Particularly, operando X‐ray measurements could provide useful insight for better understanding the dynamic process of MXene‐based energy materials. In this review, a comprehensive summary of recent studies on surface controlling, interlayer engineering, and the synchrotron‐based characterizations of MXenes is presented. The outlook of MXenes and applications of advanced X‐ray characterizations are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:Highlights • Top-down synthesis of MXenes affecting the surface chemistry is discussed. • Controllable engineering of MXene surface terminations are discussed. • Applications and critical development prospects of MXenes with modulated surface chemistry are highlighted. MXenes have captured extensive attention in various fields by virtue of unique hydrophilicity, high conductivity and tunable surface terminations. In this review, the state-of-the-art progresses of designing functional MXenes have been summarized. Firstly, the synthesis methods of MXenes are summarized and classified into HF etching, in-situ HF etching and fluoride-free etching approaches based on the effect on the surface chemistry of MXenes. Secondly, the factors that affect the surface termination groups are discussed, including synthesis methods, heat treatment temperature and atmosphere. Thirdly, this review gives an overview of the synthetic routes of functional MXenes including termination modification by synthesis methods and heat treatment, heteroatom (N, S, or P) doping, cation and organic molecule intercalation and hybridization with polymer, which inhibit restacking and increase active sites for intrinsically enhancing the inherent physical and chemical properties of MXenes. Finally, the applications with respect to energy storage and conversion, catalysis, sensors, electromagnetic interference shielding and microwave absorption of functional MXenes are introduced. Additionally, the critical challenges and development prospects of functional MXenes are also highlighted. Abstract:2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, also known as MXenes, are versatile materials due to their adjustable structure and rich surface chemistry. The physical and chemical diversity has recognized MXenes as a potential 2D material with a wide spectrum of application domains. Since the discovery of MXenes in 2011, a wide variety of synthetic routes has been proposed with advancement toward large-scale preparing methods for MXene nanosheets and derivative products. Herein, the critical synthesis aspects and the operating conditions that influence the physical and chemical characteristics of MXenes are discussed in detail. The emerging etching methods including HF etching methods, in situ HF-forming etching methods, electrochemical etching methods, alkali etching methods, and molten salt etching methods, as well as delamination strategies are discussed. Considering the future developments and practical applications, the large-scale synthesis routes and the antioxidation strategies of MXenes are also summarized. In summary, a generalized overview of MXenes synthesis protocols with an outlook for the current challenges and promising technologies for large-scale preparation and stable storage is provided.

Abstract:Intercalated layered materials offer distinctive properties and serve as precursors for important two-dimensional (2D) materials. However, intercalation of non–van der Waals structures, which can expand the family of 2D materials, is difficult. We report a structural editing protocol for layered carbides (MAX phases) and their 2D derivatives (MXenes). Gap-opening and species-intercalating stages were respectively mediated by chemical scissors and intercalants, which created a large family of MAX phases with unconventional elements and structures, as well as MXenes with versatile terminals. The removal of terminals in MXenes with metal scissors and then the stitching of 2D carbide nanosheets with atom intercalation leads to the reconstruction of MAX phases and a family of metal-intercalated 2D carbides, both of which may drive advances in fields ranging from energy to printed electronics.

Abstract:Surface chemistry of MXenes is of great interest as the terminations can define the intrinsic properties of this family of materials. The diverse and tunable terminations also distinguish MXenes from many other 2D materials. Conventional fluoride-containing reagents etching approaches resulted in MXenes with mixed fluoro-, oxo-, and hydroxyl surface groups. The relatively strong chemical bonding of MXenes' surface metal atoms with oxygen and fluorine makes post-synthetic covalent surface modifications of such MXenes unfavorable. In this minireview, we focus on the recent advances in MXenes with uniform surface terminations. Unconventional methods, including Lewis acidic molten salt etching (LAMS) and bottom-up direct synthesis, have been proven successful in producing halide-terminated MXenes. These synthetic strategies have opened new possibilities for MXenes because weaker surface chemical bonds in halide-terminated MXenes facilitate post-synthetic covalent surface modifications. Both computational and experimental results on surface termination-dependent properties are summarized and discussed. Finally, we offer our perspective on the opportunities and challenges in this exciting research field.

Atomic Scale Design of MXenes and Their Parent Materials─From Theoretical and Experimental Perspectives

Abstract:More than a decade after the discovery of MXene, there has been a remarkable increase in research on synthesis, characterization, and applications of this growing family of two-dimensional (2D) carbides and nitrides. Today, these materials include one, two, or more transition metals arranged in chemically ordered or disordered structures of three, five, seven, or nine atomic layers, with a surface chemistry characterized by surface terminations. By combining M, X, and various surface terminations, it appears that a virtually endless number of MXenes is possible. However, for the design and discovery of structures and compositions beyond current MXenes, one needs suitable (stable) precursors, an assessment of viable pathways for 3D to 2D conversion, and utilization or development of corresponding synthesis techniques. Here, we present a critical and forward-looking review of the field of atomic scale design and synthesis of MXenes and their parent materials. We discuss theoretical methods for predicting MXene precursors and for assessing whether they are chemically exfoliable. We also summarize current experimental methods for realizing the predicted materials, listing all verified MXenes to date, and outline research directions that will improve the fundamental understanding of MXene processing, enabling atomic scale design of future 2D materials, for emerging technologies.

Abstract:2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, known as MXenes, were discovered in 2011 and have grown to prominence in energy storage, catalysis, electromagnetic interference shielding, wireless communications, electronic, sensors, and environmental and biomedical applications. In addition to their high electrical conductivity and electrochemically active behavior, MXenes' mechanical properties, flexibility, and strong adhesion properties play crucial roles in almost all of these growing applications. Although these properties prove to be critical in MXenes' impressive performance, the mechanical and tribological understanding of MXenes, as well as their relation to the synthesis process, is yet to be fully explored. Here, a fundamental overview of MXenes' mechanical and tribological properties is provided and the effects of MXenes' compositions, synthesis, and processing steps on these properties are discussed. Additionally, a critical perspective of the compositional control of MXenes for innovative structural, low-friction, and low-wear performance in current and upcoming applications of MXenes is provided. It is established here that the fundamental understanding of MXenes' mechanical and tribological behavior is essential for their quickly growing applications.

Sublayers Editing of Covalent MAX Phase for Nanolaminated Early Transition Metal Compounds

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have gained popularity in fields such as energy storage, catalysis, and electromagnetic interference due to their diverse elemental compositions and variable surface terminations (T). Generally, the synthesis of MXene materials involves etching the weak M-A metallic bonds in the ternary layered transition metal carbides and nitrides (MAX phase) using HF acid or Lewis acid molten salts, while the strong M-X covalent bonds preserve the two-dimensional framework structure of MXenes. On the other hand, the MAX phase material family also includes a significant class of members where the A site is occupied by non-metal main group elements (such as sulfur and phosphorus), in which both M-A and M-X are covalent bond-type sublayers. The aforementioned etching methods cannot be used to synthesize MXene materials from these parent phases. In this work, we discovered that the covalent bond-type M-A and M-X sublayers exhibit different reactivity with some inorganic materials in a high-temperature molten state. By utilizing this difference in reactivity, we can structurally modify these covalent sublayers, allowing for the substitution of elements at the X site (from B to Se, S, P, C) and converting non-metal A site atoms in non-van der Waals (non-vdW) MAX phases into surface atoms in vdW layered materials. This results in a family of early transition metal Xide chalcogenides (TMXCs) that exhibit lattice characteristics of both MXenes and transition metal chalcogenides. Using electron-donor chemical scissors, these TMXC layered materials can be further exfoliated into monolayer nanosheets. The atomic configurations of each atom in these monolayer TMXCs are the same as those of conventional MXenes, but the oxidation states of the M-site atoms can be regulated by both X-site atoms and intercalated cations.

Enhancing Electrochemical Performance through Swift Functional Group Tuning of MXenes

Abstract:Abstract Chemical manipulation of surface functional groups on two‐dimensional transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes) provides a wide range of design and application prospects. However, achieving rapid targeted modification of surface groups remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a general strategy to swiftly shear and customize surface groups on Ti 3 C 2 T x −MXene via the flash Joule heating (FJH) reaction within 1 s. Successfully, MXenes with 9 target terminations, including VII A (F, Cl, Br, or I), VI A (O, S, or Se), and V A (N or P), either single or multiple, are synthesized, with a surface content of up to about 76 %. The impact of these terminations is systematically analyzed on electrochemical performance, demonstrating that VI A and V A terminations have higher electrochemical activity than VII A. Particularly, N‐, S‐, and O‐terminated MXenes exhibit enhanced specific capacities and undecayed cycling performance. These findings offer valuable insights for the surface engineering design and performance optimization of functional materials.

Abstract:Intercalation of non-van der Waals (vdW) layered materials can produce new 2D and 3D materials with unique properties, but it is difficult to achieve. Here, we describe a structural editing protocol for 3D non-vdW layered ternary carbides and nitrides (MAX phases) and their 2D vdW derivatives (MXenes). Gap-opening and species-intercalating stages were mediated by chemical scissors and guest intercalants, creating a large family of layered materials with unconventional elements and structures in MAX phases, as well as MXenes with versatile termination species. Removal of surface terminations by metal scissors and stitching of carbide layers by metal atoms leads to a reverse transformation from MXenes to MAX phases, and metal-intercalated 2D carbides. This scissor-mediated structural editing may enable structural and chemical tailoring of other layered ceramics.

Tailoring Ti3C2Tx MXene Flake Sizes for Modified Electrochemical Performance: A Top-down Approach

Abstract:Introduction: Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as MXene (Ti3C2Tx), have garnered extensive attention in recent years due to their exceptional performance across various domains. The flake size of Ti3C2Tx notably influences its specific surface area, a pivotal factor in interfacial interactions within electrochemistry. Method: Presently, modifying the flake size of bulk Ti3C2Tx typically involves complex and costly processes, like ultrasonic treatment and isolation. Leveraging the specific preparation principle of MXenes, which involves etching the A layers in precursor MAX phases, a topdown strategy for producing Ti3C2Tx flakes of desired sizes, has been proposed in this work. In this approach, precursor Ti3AlC2 particles undergo ball-milling to adjust their size. Result: Through this innovative strategy, dispersions of Ti3C2Tx flakes with varying average lateral sizes are generated, enabling an investigation into the impact of lateral size on the electrochemical properties of Ti3C2Tx flakes. By controlling the ball milling time for Ti3AlC2 powders, the resulting average sizes of Ti3C2Tx (0, 2, 4) are 6.34 μm, 2.16 μm, and 0.96 μm, respectively. Particularly, the Ti3C2Tx (2) electrode, composed of 2.16 μm sheets, demonstrates remarkable performance metrics. It exhibits a high areal capacitance of 845.0 mF/cm2 at a scan rate of 5 mV/s, along with a gravimetric capacitance of 244.0 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. Conclusion: This study presents a facile method to enable mass production of Ti3C2Tx with sheets of varying sizes, addressing both small and large dimensions.

Abstract:Abstract Recent advances in MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) fibers, prepared from electrically conductive and mechanically strong MXene nanosheets, address the increasing demand of emerging yet promising electrode materials for the development of textile-based devices and beyond. However, to reveal the full potential of MXene fibers, reaching a balance between electrical conductivity and mechanical property is still the fundamental challenge, mainly due to the difficulties to further compact the loose MXene nanosheets. In this work, we demonstrate a continuous and controllable route to fabricate ultra-compact MXene fibers with an in-situ generated protective layer via the synergy of interfacial interactions and thermal drawing-induced stresses. The resulting ultra-compact MXene fibers with high orientation and low porosity exhibit not only excellent tensile strength and ultra-high toughness, but also high electrical conductivity. Then, we construct meter-scale MXene textiles using these ultra-compact fibers to achieve high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding and personal thermal management, accompanied by the high mechanical durability and stability even after multiple washing cycles. The demonstrated generic strategy can be applied to a broad range of nanostructured materials to construct functional fibers for large-scale applications in both space and daily lives.

A Sweet Synthesis of MXenes

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have shown great promise in various applications. However, mass production of MXenes suffers from the excessive use of toxic fluorine-containing reagents. Herein, a new method was validated for synthesizing MXenes from five MAX ceramics. The method features a minimized (stoichiometric) dosage of F-containing reagent (NaBF4) and polyols (glycerol, erythritol, and xylitol) as the reaction solvent. Due to the sweetness of polyols and the low environmental impact, we refer to this method as a "sweet" synthesis of MXenes. An in-depth molecular dynamics simulation study, combined with experimental kinetic parameters, further revealed that the diffusion of F- in the confined interplanar space is rate-determining for the etching reaction. The expansion of interlayer spacing by polyols effectively reduces the diffusion activation energy of F- and accelerates the etching reaction.

Abstract:The rising of MXenes not only enriches the two-dimensional material family but also brings more opportunities for diverse functional applications. However, the controllable synthesis of MXenes is still unsatisfied via the common liquid-solid etching route, considering the unsolved problems like safety risk, time cost and easy oxidation. Herein, a facile yet efficient gas-solid (G-S) reaction methodology is devised by using hydrogen fluoride gas derived from fluorinated organics as the MAX etchant toward high-efficiency fabrication of multiple MXenes and their derivatives. The innovative G-S reaction strategy exhibits superb versatility to achieve different gram-level MXenes (V2C, Ti3C2, Nb2C, Ti2N, Ti3CN, (Mo2/3Y1/3)2C) in a very short time, and even realizes in-situ heteroatom doping or synchronous phase conversion of MXenes directly from MAX phases. The obtained MXenes and their derivatives exhibit excellent structure stability and high electron/ion conductivity, making them promising materials for electrochemical applications. In particular, the N-doped V2C MXene shows superior adsorption and catalytic activity toward lithium polysulfides for advanced lithium sulfur batteries.
