Abstract:Solar energy-driven photocatalytic water splitting has been investigated for decades to produce clean and renewable green hydrogen. In this paper, the cutting-edge research within the overall water splitting system is summarized from the one-step photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS) system to the two-step system and the cocatalysts research in this field. In addition, the photocatalytic reaction engineering study is also reviewed which is crucial for future scale-up. This mini-review provides a picture of survey of recent progress of relevant overall water splitting system, with particular attention paid to material system and mechanistic breakthroughs, and highlights the challenge and opportunity of the current system.

Abstract:Solar‐driven overall water splitting using particulate photocatalysts represents a viable and attractive paradigm to produce H2. In order to achieve sustainable artificial photosynthesis, considerable effort has been devoted in enhancing the overall efficiency and stability of photocatalysts. More specifically, modifying the photocatalyst surface with suitable cocatalysts can significantly enhance its water‐splitting performance. In this minireview, we describe recent advances with respect to the hybridization strategies in constructing high‐performance cocatalyst/photocatalyst systems. We first discuss the fundamental concepts and principles governing the photocatalytic water splitting and the important role of cocatalysts. Subsequently, we examine the strengths and drawbacks of conventional and emerging cocatalyst loading strategies. Special consideration is given to the structure‐activity relationship of cocatalysts to achieve efficient photocatalytic H2 production from pure H2O. Finally, the remaining key challenges and possible future directions in the discovery and further exploration of cocatalyst materials are also discussed. We anticipate this review will provide insights and inspire more research interest in designing high‐performance cocatalysts for photocatalytic overall water splitting. Abstract:The solar-driven overall water splitting (2H2O→2H2 + O2) is considered as one of the most promising strategies for reducing carbon emissions and meeting energy demands. However, due to the sluggish performance and high H2 cost, there is still a big gap for the current photocatalytic systems to meet the requirements for practical sustainable H2 production. Economic feasibility can be attained through simultaneously generating products of greater value than O2, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 2H2O→H2 + H2O2). Compared with overall water splitting, this approach is more kinetically feasible and generates more high-value products of H2 and H2O2. In several years, there has been an increasing surge in exploring the possibility and substantial progress has been achieved. In this review, a concise overview of the importance and underlying principles of PIWS is first provided. Next, the reported typical photocatalysts for PIWS are discussed, including commonly used semiconductors and cocatalysts, essential design features of these photocatalysts, and connections between their structures and activities, as well as the selected approaches for enhancing their stability. Then, the techniques used to quantify H2O2 and the operando characterization techniques that can be employed to gain a thorough understanding of the reaction mechanisms are summarized. Finally, the current existing challenges and the direction needing improvement are presented. This review aims to provide a thorough summary of the most recent research developments in PIWS and sets the stage for future advancements and discoveries in this emerging area.

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution via solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) is considered an important strategy for facilitating clean global energy and overcoming the severe environmental challenges facing our society. As a result, many photocatalysts have been developed over the past several years. In this review, we outline the most recent advances in hydrogen evolution photocatalysts over the past 2 years. In particular, we introduce hydrogen production methods, main and cocatalysts for hydrogen evolution through water splitting, the underlying photocatalytic mechanisms, and current challenges and future potential advances for this exciting field.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is the most promising method to generate hydrogen energy. This review has focused on the recent developments of single‐atom (SA) photocatalysts for H2 generation, which are classified by different types of support materials. The explorations of material design and reaction mechanisms of novel SA photocatalysts supply important inspiration to achieve superior photocatalytic performances in the future. Solar energy utilization is of great significance to current challenges of the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which benefit the development of the global community to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Hydrogen energy is also treated as a good candidate for future energy supply since its combustion not only supplies high‐density energy but also shows no pollution gas. In particular, photocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing research as a promising method for H2 production. Recently, single‐atom (SA) photocatalysts have been proposed as a potential solution to improve catalytic efficiency and lower the costs of photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation. Owing to the maximized atom utilization rate, abundant surface active sites, and tunable coordination environment, SA photocatalysts have achieved significant progress. This review reviews developments of advanced SA photocatalysts for H2 generation regarding the different support materials. The recent progress of titanium dioxide, metal–organic frameworks, two‐dimensional carbon materials, and red phosphorus supported SA photocatalysts are carefully discussed. In particular, the material designs, reaction mechanisms, modulation strategies, and perspectives are highlighted for realizing improved solar‐to‐energy efficiency and H2 generation rate. This work will supply significant references for future design and synthesis of advanced SA photocatalysts.

Abstract:The pursuit of sustainable and clean energy sources has driven extensive research into the generation and use of novel energy vectors. The photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS) reaction has been identified as a promising approach for harnessing solar energy to produce hydrogen to be used as a clean energy carrier. Materials chemistry and associated photocatalyst design are key to the further improvement of the efficiency of the POWS reaction through the optimization of charge carrier separation, migration and interfacial reaction kinetics. This review examines the latest progress in POWS, ranging from key catalyst materials to modification strategies and reaction design. Critical analysis focuses on carrier separation and promotion from the perspective of internal and external energy fields, aiming to trace the driving force behind the POWS process and explore the potential for industrial development of this technology. This review concludes by presenting perspectives on the emerging opportunities for this technology, and the challenges to be overcome by future studies.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting using sunlight is a promising technology capable of providing high energy yield without pollutant byproducts. Herein, we review various aspects of this technology including chemical reactions, physiochemical conditions and photocatalyst types such as metal oxides, sulfides, nitrides, nanocomposites, and doped materials followed by recent advances in computational modeling of photoactive materials. As the best-known catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution, TiO₂ is discussed in a separate section, along with its challenges such as the wide band gap, large overpotential for hydrogen evolution, and rapid recombination of produced electron-hole pairs. Various approaches are addressed to overcome these shortcomings, such as doping with different elements, heterojunction catalysts, noble metal deposition, and surface modification. Development of a photocatalytic corrosion resistant, visible light absorbing, defect-tuned material with small particle size is the key to complete the sunlight to hydrogen cycle efficiently. Computational studies have opened new avenues to understand and predict the electronic density of states and band structure of advanced materials and could pave the way for the rational design of efficient photocatalysts for water splitting. Future directions are focused on developing innovative junction architectures, novel synthesis methods and optimizing the existing active materials to enhance charge transfer, visible light absorption, reducing the gas evolution overpotential and maintaining chemical and physical stability.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) is a highly promising technique for generating sustainable fuel by using light energy. Significant progress has been made in the development of PWS innovations over recent years. In addition to various water-splitting (WS) systems, the focus has primarily been on one- and two-step-excitation WS systems. These systems utilize singular or composite photocatalysts for WS, which is a simple, feasible, and cost-effective method for efficiently converting prevalent green energy into sustainable H2 energy on a large commercial scale. The proposed principle of charge confinement and transformation should be implemented dynamically by conjugation and stimulation of the photocatalytic process while ensuring there is no unintentional connection at the interface. This study focuses on the fundamentals of overall water splitting (OWS) using single/double-step stimulation and various techniques. It also discusses the current advancements in the development of new light-absorbing materials and provides perspectives and approaches for isolating photoinduced charging. This article explores various aspects of advancement, encompassing both chemical and physical changes, environmental factors, different photocatalyst types, and distinct parameters affecting the PWS. Significant factors for achieving an efficient photocatalytic process include the presence of detrimental conditions, strong light absorption, and the production of nanostructures with a small size. Future research will focus on developing novel materials, investigating potential synthesis techniques, and improving existing high-energy raw materials. The objective of these endeavors is to enhance the efficiency of energy conversion, the absorption of radiation, and the coherence of physiochemical processes.

Abstract:In response to energy and environmental crises, solar‐driven pure water splitting is a promising way to produce and store renewable energy sources without environmental pollution. Photocatalytic water splitting via two‐electron pathway (2H2O→H2+H2O2) is a more kinetically favorable way to produce H2 compared with traditional four‐electron pathway. Although numerous efforts have been devoted to investigate the application of two‐electron pathway water splitting, drawbacks still inhibit the efficiency of H2 generation. This review discusses the mechanism and challenges of photocatalytic water splitting via a two‐electron pathway. Then, recent developments in novel photocatalyst preparation and modification strategies for effective H2 generation via two‐electron pathway were discussed, such as morphology and structure modulation, elemental doping, co‐catalyst loading, and heterostructure construction. In addition, the development of stepwise two‐electron pathway which further decomposed H2O2 and release O2 was also introduced. Appropriate co‐catalyst with high H2O2 decomposition activity that is essential for stepwise process was discussed. Finally, challenges and opportunities for commercial application of photocatalytic water splitting via two‐electron pathway were briefly outlined.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting using solar energy has attracted great attention for generation of renewable hydrogen with less carbon footprint, while there are enormous challenges that still remain for improving solar energy water splitting efficiency, due to limited light harvesting, energy loss associated to fast recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, as well as electrode degradation. This overview focuses on the recent development about catalyst nanomaterials and nanostructures in different PEC water splitting systems. As photoanode, Au nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanowire electrodes exhibited enhanced photoactivity in both the UV and the visible regions due to surface plasmon resonance of Au and showed the largest photocurrent generation of up to 710 nm. Pt/CdS/CGSe electrodes were developed as photocathode. With the role of p–n heterojunction, the photoelectrode showed high stability and evolved hydrogen continuously for more than 10 days. Further, in the Z-scheme system (Bi2S3/TNA as photoanode and Pt/SiPVC as photocathode at the same time), a self-bias (open-circuit voltage Voc = 0.766 V) was formed between two photoelectrodes, which could facilitate photogenerated charge transfers and enhance the photoelectrochemical performance, and which might provide new hints for PEC water splitting. Meanwhile, the existing problems and prospective solutions have also been reviewed.

Abstract:A water splitting photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell can convert solar energy to hydrogen fuels directly. The challenges for practical application are to fabricate photoelectrodes with high efficiency, good durability and low cost. In this review, we focus on recent progress of some promising photoelectrode materials, including BiVO4, α-Fe2O3, Ta3N5 photoanodes and Cu2ZnSnS4 photocathodes. Several new strategies to enhance the performance of a PEC cell, such as surface exfoliation, suppressing back reaction and loading dual-layer catalysts, are discussed.

Abstract:Sunlight is the most abundant and inexhaustible energy source on earth. However, its low energy density, dispersibility and intermittent nature make its direct utilization with industrial relevance challenging, suggesting that converting sunlight into chemical energy and storing it is a valuable measure to achieve global sustainable development. Carbon–neutral, clean and secondary pollution-free solar-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen is one of the most attractive avenues among all the current options and is expected to realize the transformation from dependence on fossil fuels to zero-pollution hydrogen. Artificial photosynthetic systems (APSs) based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices appear to be an ideal avenue to efficiently achieve solar-to-hydrogen conversion. In this review, we comprehensively highlight the recent developments in photocathodes, including architectures, semiconductor photoabsorbers and performance optimization strategies. In particular, frontier research cases of organic semiconductors, dye sensitization and surface grafted molecular catalysts applied to APSs based on frontier (molecular) orbital theory and semiconductor energy band theory are discussed. Moreover, research advances in typical photoelectrodes with the metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) architecture based on quantum tunnelling are also introduced. Finally, we discuss the benchmarks and protocols for designing integrated tandem photoelectrodes and PEC systems that conform to the solar spectrum to achieve high-efficiency and cost-effective solar-to-hydrogen conversion at an industrial scale in the near future.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Solar-driven water splitting is an efficient process for converting solar energy into chemical energy. In this process, semiconductor materials are excited by solar energy to generate free electrons to participate in the water-splitting reaction. Among these semiconductor materials, inorganic perovskite oxides have a spatial structure that is easy to control and thereby lead to different energy band structures and photocatalytic properties. More importantly, perovskite oxides can be compounded with other organic/inorganic materials to promote charge separation and improve apparent quantum yield. However, the low solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency has not yet reached the requirements of practical applications. In this review, the fundamental principles of solar-driven water splitting based on perovskite materials are introduced according to the most recently published results. In addition, the innovative modification techniques for water splitting based on perovskite oxides have been summarized, focusing on the following methods: element doping, homo/heterojunction formation, Z-scheme, plasmon effect, dye sensitization, carbon enhancement, and surface modifications. Note that the applications in the visible light wavelength range have been described, with emphasis among all these modification materials. Furthermore, the recent water-splitting reaction systems for practical applications are briefly discussed. As a summary, we outline the challenges and potential utilization associated with visible light–driven water splitting based on perovskite oxides for future commercial applications. This review describes various modification methods to improve photochemical performance of perovskite oxides as well as illustrates the potential to employ perovskite oxides as a key material for the practical application of water splitting.

Abstract:Currently, problems associated with energy and environment have become increasingly serious. Producing hydrogen, a clean and renewable resource, through photocatalytic water splitting using solar energy is a feasible and efficient route for resolving these problems, and great efforts have been devoted to improve the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. Light harvesting and electron-hole separation are key in enhancing the efficiency of solar energy utilization, which stimulates the development of new photocatalytic materials. Here, recent advances in material design for photocatalytic water splitting are presented from a theoretical perspective. Specifically, aiming to enhance the photocatalytic performance, general strategies of materials design are discussed, including codoping and introducing a built-in electric field to improve the light harvesting of materials, reducing the dimension of materials to shorten the migration pathway of carriers to inhibit electron-hole recombination, and constructing heterojunctions to enhance light harvesting and electron-hole separation. Future opportunities and challenges in the theoretical design of photocatalytic materials toward water splitting are also included.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has attracted a great attention in the past several decades which holds great promise to address global energy and environmental issues by converting solar energy into hydrogen. However, its low solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency remains a bottleneck for practical application. Developing efficient photoelectrocatalysts with high stability and high STH conversion efficiency is one of the key challenges. As a typical n-type semiconductor, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) exhibits high PEC water splitting performance, especially high chemical and photo stability. But, TiO 2 has also disadvantages such as wide band gap and fast electron-hole recombination rate, which seriously hinder its PEC performance. This review focuses on recent development in TiO 2 -based photoanodes as well as some key fundamentals. The corresponding mechanisms and key factors for high STH, and controllable synthesis and modification strategies are highlighted in this review. We conclude finally with an outlook providing a critical perspective on future trends on TiO 2 -based photoanodes for PEC water splitting.

Abstract:Solar-driven water splitting based on particulate semiconductor materials is studied as a technology for green hydrogen production. Transition-metal (oxy)nitride photocatalysts are promising materials for overall water splitting (OWS) via a one- or two-step excitation process because their band structure is suitable for water splitting under visible light. Yet, these materials suffer from low solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency (STH), mainly because of their high defect density, low charge separation and migration efficiency, sluggish surface redox reactions, and/or side reactions. Their poor thermal stability under air and the harsh nitridation conditions required to synthesize these materials make further material improvements difficult. Here, we review key challenges in the two different OWS systems and highlight some strategies recently identified as promising for improving photocatalytic activity. Finally, we discuss opportunities and challenges facing the future development of transition-metal (oxy)nitride-based OWS systems.

Abstract:Photocatalysts for water splitting are of particular importance to a renewable energy based energy and economic landscape. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors hold significant promise because of their large surface area compared to bulk photocatalysts. To overcome the crucial problem of the short lifetime of photogenerated charges, 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are being considered due to their awesome ability to separate photogenerated electrons and holes. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art studies on the topic of 2D photocatalysts, especially vdW heterostructure, for water splitting. After demonstrating the fundamental concepts of the light-driven redox reaction for water splitting, we discuss a number of promising 2D vdW heterostructures, highlighting the transition metal dichalcogenides and phosphorene based heterostructures, from both theoretical and experimental insights. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges in this area of investigation. This article presents the advanced understanding of 2D vdW heterostructures in photocatalysis, which provides new opportunities for improving the efficiency of hydrogen generation from water splitting.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalytic water-splitting for hydrogen generation by sunlight provides a new route to address energy and environmental problems. In recent years, tremendous efforts have been devoted to designing highly efficient water-splitting photocatalysts (PCs). Adequate light absorption, effective photogenerated carrier separation, and sufficiently large overpotentials for water redox are crucial in achieving high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency. These parameters thus strongly influence the design of novel photocatalytic materials. Two-dimensional (2D) PCs have flourished because of their large specific surface area ratio, short carrier migration distance compared to bulk PCs, enormous design flexibility via van der Waals heterostructure (HS) engineering and many other unique capabilities that meet the criteria for high-efficiency STH conversion. In this review, we summarize the recent developments of 2D materials and HSs for water-splitting applications from a theoretical perspective. Specifically, we first discuss a number of 2D materials and HSs employed for water-splitting. We review various strategies of material design to modulate and enhance the photocatalytic performance via improving light harvesting and carrier separation, such as the introduction of defects and dopants, and the application of strain, external electric field, rotation angles and ferroelectric switching. We then discuss the methods to evaluate hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction and STH efficiency. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of designing 2D materials and HSs for water-splitting are presented.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting can convert renewable solar energy into clean hydrogen fuel. Photoelectrodes are the core components of water-splitting cells. In the past 40 years, a series of binary and ternary transition metal oxides have been investigated as photoelectrode materials for solar water splitting, and numerous studies have been carried out to modify their water-splitting performances. Although satisfactory transition metal oxide photoelectrode materials have not been found, it is necessary to summarize the recent advancements in transition metal oxide photoelectrode materials to guide future research. In this review, the background and principle of PEC water splitting are introduced. The semiconductor properties and modification progress of typical binary and ternary metal oxide photoanodes and photocathodes for solar water splitting are summarized. Based on the newly developed strategies in recent years, a brief outlook is presented for efficient PEC water splitting using transition metal oxide photoelectrodes.
