Abstract:In this paper, we examine the homotopy classes of positive loops in ${\rm Sp}(2n)$. We demonstrate that two positive loops are homotopic if and only if they are homotopic through positive loops. As consequences, we can extend several results of McDuff \cite{McD} and Chance \cite{Cha} to higher dimensional symplectic manifolds without dimensional restrictions.

Abstract:We study closed, connected, spin 4-manifolds up to stabilisation by connected sums with copies of $S^2 \times S^2$. For a fixed fundamental group, there are primary, secondary and tertiary obstructions, which together with the signature lead to a complete stable classification. The primary obstruction exactly detects $\mathbb{CP}^2$-stable diffeomorphism and was previously related to algebraic invariants by Kreck and the authors. In this article we formulate conjectural relationships of the secondary and tertiary obstructions with algebraic invariants: the secondary obstruction should be determined by the (stable) equivariant intersection form and the tertiary obstruction via a $\tau$-invariant recording intersection data between 2-spheres, with trivial algebraic self-intersection, and their Whitney discs. We prove our conjectures for the following classes of fundamental groups: groups of cohomological dimension at most 3, right-angled Artin groups, abelian groups, and finite groups with quaternion or abelian 2-Sylow subgroups. We apply our theory to give a complete algebraic stable classification of spin $4$-manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/2$.

Abstract:A bstract Recent years have seen a surprising connection between the physics of scattering amplitudes and a class of mathematical objects — the positive Grassmannian, positive loop Grassmannians, tree and loop Amplituhedra — which have been loosely referred to as “positive geometries”. The connection between the geometry and physics is provided by a unique differential form canonically determined by the property of having logarithmic singularities (only) on all the boundaries of the space, with residues on each boundary given by the canonical form on that boundary. The structures seen in the physical setting of the Amplituhedron are both rigid and rich enough to motivate an investigation of the notions of “positive geometries” and their associated “canonical forms” as objects of study in their own right, in a more general mathematical setting. In this paper we take the first steps in this direction. We begin by giving a precise definition of positive geometries and canonical forms, and introduce two general methods for finding forms for more complicated positive geometries from simpler ones — via “triangulation” on the one hand, and “push-forward” maps between geometries on the other. We present numerous examples of positive geometries in projective spaces, Grassmannians, and toric, cluster and flag varieties, both for the simplest “simplex-like” geometries and the richer “polytope-like” ones. We also illustrate a number of strategies for computing canonical forms for large classes of positive geometries, ranging from a direct determination exploiting knowledge of zeros and poles, to the use of the general triangulation and push-forward methods, to the representation of the form as volume integrals over dual geometries and contour integrals over auxiliary spaces. These methods yield interesting representations for the canonical forms of wide classes of positive geometries, ranging from the simplest Amplituhedra to new expressions for the volume of arbitrary convex polytopes.

Abstract:We prove several positive results regarding representation of homotopy classes of spheres and algebraic groups by regular mappings. Most importantly we show that every mapping from a sphere to an orthogonal or a unitary group is homotopic to a regular one. Furthermore we prove that algebraic homotopy classes of spheres form a subgroup of the homotopy group, and that a similar result holds also for cohomotopy groups of arbitrary varieties.

Strongly chiral rational homology spheres with hyperbolic fundamental groups

Abstract:For each $m\geq0$ and any prime $p\equiv3\ \mathrm{(mod \ 4)}$, we construct strongly chiral rational homology $(4m+3)$-spheres, which have real hyperbolic fundamental groups and only non-zero integral intermediate homology groups isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_{2p}$ in degrees $1,2m+1$ and $4m+1$. This gives group theoretic analogues in high dimensions of the existence of strongly chiral hyperbolic rational homology $3$-spheres, as well as of the existence of strongly chiral hyperbolic manifolds of any dimension that are not rational homology spheres, which was shown by Weinberger. One of our tools will be $r$-spins. We thus investigate the relationship between the sets of degrees of self-maps of a given manifold and its $r$-spins, and give classes of manifolds for which the sets are equal.

Loop homology of spheres and complex projective spaces

Abstract:In his Inventiones paper, Ziller (Invent. Math: 1-22, 1977) computed the integral homology as a graded abelian group of the free loop space of compact, globally symmetric spaces of rank 1. Chas and Sullivan (String Topology, 1999)showed that the homology of the free loop space of a compact closed orientable manifold can be equipped with a loop product and a BV-operator making it a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) developed a spectral sequence which converges to the loop homology as a spectral sequence of algebras. They computed the algebra structure of the loop homology of spheres and complex projective spaces by using Ziller's results and the method of Brown-Shih (Ann. of Math. 69:223-246, 1959, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 3: 93-176, 1962). In this note we compute the loop homology algebra by using only spectral sequences and the technique of universal examples. We therefore not only obtain Zillers' and Brown-Shihs' results in an elementary way, we also replace the roundabout computations of Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) making them independent of Ziller's and Brown-Shihs' work. Moreover we offer an elementary technique which we expect can easily be generalized and applied to a wider family of spaces, not only the globally symmetric ones.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to describe connections between the loop space of the 2-sphere, Artin's braid groups, a choice of simplicial group whose homotopy groups are given by modules called Lie(n), as well as work of Milnor, and Habegger-Lin on "homotopy string links". The current article exploits Lie algebras associated to Vassiliev invariants in work of T. Kohno, and provides connections between these various topics. Two consequences are as follows: 1) the homotopy groups of spheres are identified as "natural" sub-quotients of free products of pure braid groups, and 2) an axiomatization of certain simplicial groups arising from braid groups is shown to characterize the homotopy types of connected $CW$-complexes.

Abstract:Inspired by a recent result of Levine-Lidman-Piccirillo, we construct infinitely many exotic smooth structures on some closed four-manifolds with definite intersection form and fundamental group isomorphic to $\Z /2\Z$. Similar constructions provide exotic smooth structures on further four-manifolds with fundamental group $Z/2\Z$, including examples with even $b_2^+$.

Around the positive graph conjecture

Abstract:A graph $H$ is said to be positive if the homomorphism density $t_H(G)$ is non-negative for all weighted graphs $G$. The positive graph conjecture proposes a characterisation of such graphs, saying that a graph is positive if and only if it is symmetric, in the sense that it is formed by gluing two copies of some subgraph along an independent set. We prove several results relating to this conjecture. First, we make progress towards the conjecture itself by showing that any connected positive graph must have a vertex of even degree. We then make use of this result to identify some new counterexamples to the analogue of Sidorenko's conjecture for hypergraphs. In particular, we show that, for $r$ odd, every $r$-uniform tight cycle is a counterexample, generalising a recent result of Conlon, Lee and Sidorenko that dealt with the case $r=3$. Finally, we relate the positive graph conjecture to the emerging study of graph codes by showing that any positive graph has vanishing graph code density, thereby improving a result of Alon who proved the same result for symmetric graphs. Our proofs make use of a variety of tools and techniques, including the properties of independence polynomials, hypergraph quasirandomness and discrete Fourier analysis.

Abstract:A theorem of Grove and Searle directly establishes that positive curvature 2d manifolds M with effective circular symmetry group of dimension 8 or less have positive Euler characteristic X(M): the fixed point set N consists of even dimensional positive curvature manifolds and has the Euler characteristic X(N)=X(M). It is not empty by Berger. If N has a co-dimension 2 component, Grove-Searle forces M to be in { RP^2d,S^2d,CP^d }. By Frankel, there can be not two codimension 2 cases. In the remaining cases, Gauss-Bonnet-Chern forces all to have positive Euler characteristic. This simple proof does not quite reach the record 10 or less which uses methods of Wilking but it motivates to analyze the structure of fixed point components N and in particular to look at positive curvature manifolds which admit a U(1) or SU(2) symmetry with connected or almost connected fixed point set N. They have amazing geodesic properties: the fixed point manifold N agrees with the caustic of each of its points and the geodesic flow is integrable. In full generality, the Lefschetz fixed point property X(N)=X(M) and Frankel's dimension theorem dim(M) is less than dim(A) + dim(B) for two different connectivity components A,B of N produce already heavy constraints in building up M from smaller components. It is possible that S^2d, RP^2d, CP^d, HP^d, OP^2, W^6,E^6,W^12,W^24 are actually a complete list of even-dimensional positive curvature manifolds admitting a continuum symmetry. Aside from the projective spaces, the Euler characteristic of the known cases is always 1,2 or 6, where the jump from 2 to 6 happened with the Wallach or Eschenburg manifolds W^6,E^6 which have four fixed point components N=S^2 + S^2 + S^0, the only known case which are not of the Grove-Searle form N=N_1 or N=N_1 + p} with connected N_1.

A Homology Vanishing Theorem for Graphs with Positive Curvature

Abstract:We prove a homology vanishing theorem for graphs with positive Bakry-' Emery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Bochner on manifolds [3]. Specifically, we prove that if a graph has positive curvature at every vertex, then its first homology group is trivial, where the notion of homology that we use for graphs is the path homology developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau [11]. We moreover prove that the fundamental group is finite for graphs with positive Bakry-' Emery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Myers on manifolds [22]. The proofs draw on several separate areas of graph theory, including graph coverings, gain graphs, and cycle spaces, in addition to the Bakry-Emery curvature, path homology, and graph homotopy. The main results follow as a consequence of several different relationships developed among these different areas. Specifically, we show that a graph with positive curvature cannot have a non-trivial infinite cover preserving 3-cycles and 4-cycles, and give a combinatorial interpretation of the first path homology in terms of the cycle space of a graph. Furthermore, we relate gain graphs to graph homotopy and the fundamental group developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau [12], and obtain an alternative proof of their result that the abelianization of the fundamental group of a graph is isomorphic to the first path homology over the integers.
Almost Hermitian structures on moduli spaces of non-Abelian monopoles and applications to the topology of symplectic four-manifolds

Abstract:This work is a sequel to our previous monograph <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.15789" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.15789">arXiv:2010.15789</a> (to appear in AMS Memoirs), where we initiated our program to prove that the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality holds for closed, symplectic four-manifolds and, more generally, for closed, smooth four-manifolds with a Seiberg-Witten basic class. This inequality was first proved for compact, complex surfaces of general type by Miyaoka (1977) and Yau (1978). Our approach uses a version of Morse theory for a natural Hamiltonian, the square of the $L^2$ norm of the coupled spinors, for the circle action on the moduli space of non-Abelian monopoles over a closed four-manifold. It has the aim of proving the existence of a projectively anti-self-dual connection on a rank-two Hermitian vector bundle over a blow-up of the four-manifold, where the first Pontrjagin number of the vector bundle is negative and greater than or equal to minus the Euler characteristic of the blown-up four-manifold. Our Morse theory argument relies on positivity of virtual Morse-Bott indices for critical points of Hamiltonians for circle actions on complex analytic spaces (or real analytic spaces that, locally, are sufficiently well-approximated by complex analytic model spaces), as developed by the first author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.14710" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.14710">arXiv:2206.14710</a>. In our application to the moduli space of non-Abelian monopoles, the critical points are fixed points of the circle action and thus represented by Seiberg-Witten monopoles.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.
