Abstract:This work presents a comprehensive methodology for estimating the heat flux generation and temperature of 18650 nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cylindrical cells under highly dynamic loading conditions. A two-way coupled electro-thermal model was developed to simulate the temperature evolution of a four-cell arrangement and validated against experimental data. All parameters used in this model were experimentally characterized. The electrical model was used to simulate the irreversible heat generation flux based on an Equivalent Circuit Model (ECM), whose fundamental parameters were extracted by Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) tests at three different temperatures within the operating range. Entropy tests were also performed to estimate the reversible heat term. In addition, the bulk thermal properties of the cells, namely specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity, were characterized by Acceleration Rate Calorimeter (ARC) and Transient Plane Source (TPS) experiments, respectively. The novelty of the approach resides in the combination of a comprehensive thermophysical characterization methodology with a two-way electrothermal model where a closed feedback loop accounts for the temperature dependencies on the ECM parameters. As the thermal model captures the cooling strategy adopted and the non-uniform heat transfer patterns with the surroundings, cell temperature evolution is resolved with improved accuracy. This original approach can be used as a tool to optimize thermal management systems for engineering applications.
