Abstract:Ghost imaging is an indirect system that allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing the object. The speckle pattern that contains the information about light and objects has increasingly become a popular topic in pseudothermal light ghost imaging. However, existing research still has encountered problems of poor imaging quality and slow sampling speeds. We propose a ghost imaging method based on N-order speckle patterns to recover the object (NSGI). The N-order speckle patterns combine N independent laser speckles individually produced by passing an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser through a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). The sampling frequency can be improved by controlling the trigger signals of different DMDs. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified that our method can increase sampling speed and reconstruction accuracy. In addition, NSGI can be applied to more applications by designing multiple independent speckles with different properties. (C) 2018 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Abstract:The theory that light can transmit information in a unique way has been proved by the experiment and theory of correlated imaging. In this paper, the principles of correlated imaging were discussed in semi-classical interpretations. In the view of pseudo-thermal light field, photoelectric detection and correlated computation, the imaging process was analyzed. Field of view, spatial resolution and contrast of the system were given. On this basis, the traditional linear correlation algorithm was improved to make the ghost image a mean square convergence unbiased estimation of the object transmission function. The corresponding computational ghost imaging experiment measurement indicates that under the same number, especially less than the Nyquist frequency, the PSNR is significantly improved and background noise is effectively suppressed compared with the traditional algorithm.

Abstract:In order to investigate the impact of light field high-order correlation on the tangential moving target ghost imaging,high order background-subtracted ghost imaging theory can be applied.Some numerical simulations and experiments are carried out,and the relevant simulated images are obtained.In this study of tangential moving targets ghost imaging based on the high-order background-subtracted ghost imaging theory,the results show that the high-order correlation of the light field increases the background fluctuation noise when the reference beam order increases,and the quality of image reconstruction deteriorates.Moreover,the increase of the signal beam order has little effect on the image quality.So the best quality can be obtained by the lowest-order ghost imaging.

Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) is a potential imaging technique that reconstructs the target scene from its correlated measurements with a sequential of patterns. Restricted by the multi-shot principle, GI usually requires long acquisition time and is limited in observation of dynamic scenes. To handle this problem, this paper proposes a single-shot thermal ghost imaging scheme via wavelength-division multiplexing technique. Specifically, we generate thousands of patterns simultaneously by modulating a broadband light source with a wavelength dependent diffuser. These patterns carry the scene's spatial information and then the correlated measurements are coupled into a spectrometer for the final reconstruction. This technique accelerates the ghost imaging speed significantly and promotes the applications in dynamic ghost imaging.

Abstract:A thermal ghost imaging scheme between two distant parties is proposed and experimentally demonstrated over long-distance optical fibers. In the scheme, the weak thermal light is split into two paths. Photons in one path are spatially diffused according to their frequencies by a spatial dispersion component, then illuminate the object and record its spatial transmission information. Photons in the other path are temporally diffused by a temporal dispersion component. By the coincidence measurement between photons of two paths, the object can be imaged in a way of ghost imaging, based on the frequency correlation between photons in the two paths. In the experiment, the weak thermal light source is prepared by the spontaneous four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide. The temporal dispersion is introduced by single-mode fibers of 50 km, which also could be looked at as a fiber link. Experimental results show that this scheme can be realized over long-distance optical fibers.

Abstract:Conventional ghost imaging is achieved by the position position or momentum momentum correlation between two beams. These correlations cannot be preserved when the beams propagate along single-mode optical fibers. Thus, conventional ghost imaging cannot be achieved distantly over single-mode fibers. Frequency correlations between signal photons and idler photons generated from the spontaneous nonlinear parametric process or between two light beams from the same thermal light source are noted. The frequency correlation can be stably preserved over optical fibers. Thus, we propose and demonstrate long-distance temporal ghost imaging schemes over optical fibers based on frequency correlations in correlated photon pairs and thermal light beams. This work extends the method for achieving ghost imaging, providing new ideas for applying ghost imaging over a large geographical scale. In this study, we review the principles and methods for quantum and thermal temporal ghost imaging over optical fibers. We introduce an application of temporal ghost imaging quantum secure ghost imaging. Furthermore, a perspective on the development of temporal ghost imaging is provided.

Abstract:Ghost imaging can be implemented with illumination light with pronounced quantum characters. In this work, we address the inverse problem of ghost imaging, i.e., the tomography of the quantum states of illumination light based on ghost imaging. We showcase the characterization of multimode Gaussian state light represented by its covariance matrix. With the information of spatial modes, we reconstruct the quantum states of light using the variation of SNR of the ghost images formed by the input light under a given set of optical operations. We demonstrate that ghost imaging can also be used to characterize the non-Gaussian light by its deviation from Gaussian states, which can serve as a criterion for the non-Gaussianity of the input light. The spatial resolving power of the proposed method can be advantageous for quantum information applications involving structured light, such as multiplexing with spatial modes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.20.044001 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:High visibility temporal ghost imaging with classical light is possible when superbunching pseudothermal light is employed. In the numerical simulation, the visibility of temporal ghost imaging with pseudothermal light equaling ($4.7\pm 0.2$)\% can be increased to ($75\pm 8$)\% in the same scheme with superbunching pseudothermal light. The reasons for the difference in visibility and quality of the retrieved images in different situations are discussed in detail. It is concluded that high visibility and high quality temporal ghost image can be obtained by collecting large enough number of data points. The results are helpful to understand the difference between ghost imaging with classical light and entangled photon pairs. The superbunching pseudothermal light can be employed to improve the image quality in ghost imaging applications.

Abstract:Ghost imaging in the time domain allows for reconstructing fast temporal objects using a slow photodetector. The technique involves correlating random or pre-programmed probing temporal intensity patterns with the integrated signal measured after modulation by the temporal object. However, the implementation of temporal ghost imaging necessitates ultrafast detectors or modulators for measuring or pre-programming the probing intensity patterns, which are not available in all spectral regions especially in the mid-infrared range. Here, we demonstrate a frequency downconversion temporal ghost imaging scheme that enables to extend the operation regime to arbitrary wavelengths regions where fast modulators and detectors are not available. The approach modulates a signal with temporal intensity patterns in the near-infrared and transfers the patterns to an idler via difference-frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal at a wavelength where the temporal object can be retrieved. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate computational temporal ghost imaging in the mid-infrared with operating wavelength that can be tuned from 3.2 to 4.3 μm. The scheme is flexible and can be extended to other regimes. Our results introduce new possibilities for scan-free pump-probe imaging and the study of ultrafast dynamics in spectral regions where ultrafast modulation or detection is challenging such as the mid-infrared and THz regions.

Abstract:In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the possibility to create an image of an opaque object using a few-photon thermal optical field. We utilize the Quadrature-Noise Shadow Imaging (QSI) technique that detects the changes in the quadrature-noise statistics of the probe beam after its interaction with an object. We show that such thermal QSI scheme has an advantage over the classical differential imaging when the effect of dark counts is considered. At the same time, the easy availability of thermal sources for any wavelength makes the method practical for broad range of applications, not accessible with, e.g. quantum squeezed light. As a proof of principle, we implement this scheme by two different light sources: a pseudo-thermal beam generated by rotating ground glass (RGG) method and a thermal beam generated by Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) method. The RGG method shows simplicity and robustness of QSI scheme while the FWM method validates theoretical signal-to-noise ratio predictions. Finally, we demonstrate low-light imaging abilities with QSI by imaging a biological specimen on a CCD camera, detecting as low as 0.03 photons on average per pixel per 1.7 microseconds exposure.

Abstract:High-resolution ghost image and ghost diffraction experiments are performed by using a single source of thermal-like speckle light divided by a beam splitter. Passing from the image to the diffraction result solely relies on changing the optical setup in the reference arm, while leaving untouched the object arm. The product of spatial resolutions of the ghost image and ghost diffraction experiments is shown to overcome a limit which was formerly thought to be achievable only with entangled photons.

Abstract:We study the electromagnetic surface waves localized at an interface separating a one-dimensional photonic crystal and left-handed metamaterial, the so-called surface Tamm states. We demonstrate that the metamaterial allows for a flexible control of the dispersion properties of surface states, and can support the Tamm states with a backward energy flow and a vortex-like structure.

Abstract:The Fourier-transform ghost imaging of both amplitude-only and pure-phase objects was experimentally observed with classical incoherent light at Fresnel distance by a lensless scheme. The experimental results are in good agreement with the standard Fourier transform of the corresponding objects. This scheme provides a route toward aberration-free diffraction-limited three-dimensional images with classically incoherent thermal light (or neutrons), which have no resolution and depth-of-field limitations of lens-based tomographic systems.

Abstract:Lensless ghost imaging has attracted much interest in recent years due to its profound physics and potential applications. In this paper we report studies of the robust properties of the lensless ghost imaging system with a pseudo-thermal light source in a strongly scattering medium. The effects of the positions of the strong medium on the ghost imaging are investigated. In the lensless ghost imaging system, a pseudo-thermal light is split into two correlated beams by a beam splitter. One beam goes to a charge-coupled detector camera, labeled as CCD2. The other beam goes to an object and then is collected in another charge-coupled detector camera, labeled as CCD1, which serves as a bucket detector. When the strong medium, a pane of ground glass disk, is placed between the object and CCD1, the bucket detector, the quality of ghost imaging is barely affected and a good image could still be obtained. The quality of the ghost imaging can also be maintained, even when the ground glass is rotating, which is the strongest scattering medium so far. However, when the strongly scattering medium is present in the optical path from the light source to CCD2 or the object, the lensless ghost imaging system hardly retrieves the image of the object. A theoretical analysis in terms of the second-order correlation function is also provided.

Abstract:We show theoretically that photon counting technique can be used to obtain ghost imaging as long as the number distribution of photon source is non-Poissonian; the visibility of image could be either negative or positive, depending on the photon statistical properties. The visibility of photon counting ghost imaging can be enhanced using higher order correlations. With taking advantage of high speed photon counting CCD and detector, fast imaging can be achieved.

Abstract:There has been an intense debate on the quantum versus classical origin of ghost imaging with a thermal light source over the last two decades. A lot of distinguished work has contributed to this topic, both theoretically and experimentally, however, to this day this quantum-classical dilemma still persists. Here we formulate for the first time a density matrix in the photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) Hilbert space to fully characterize the two-arm ghost imaging system with the basic definition of thermal light sources. Our formulation offers a mathematically precise method to describe the formation of a ghost image in a nonlocal fashion. More importantly, it provides a more physically intuitive picture to reveal the quantumness hidden in the thermal ghost imaging, and therefore, presenting a sound resolution to the ongoing quantum-classical dilemma, which distinguishes the quantum correlations beyond entanglement in terms of geometric measure of discord. Our work also suggests further studies of using thermal multi-photon OAM states directly to implement some quantum information tasks.

Abstract:We compare the Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) and the thermal light ghost imaging schemes in both near and far fields. Both effects arise as a result of the intensity fluctuations of the thermal light and we find that the essential physics behind the two effects is the same. The difference however is that, in the ghost imaging, large number of bits information of an object needs to be treated together, whereas, in the HBT, there is only one bit information required to be obtained. In the HBT experiment far field is used for the purpose of easy detection, while in the ghost image experiment near (or not far) field is used for good quality image.

Abstract:Lenses play a key role in quantum imaging but inevitably constrain the spatial resolution and working wavelength. In this work we develop and demonstrate a lensless quantum ghost imaging by engineering quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals. With a transverse parabolic domain modulation introduced into the lithium tantalate crystal, the entangled photon pairs generated from parametric down-conversion will self-focus. Therefore we can dispense with additional lenses to construct imaging in a nonlocal way. The lensless imaging is found to follow a specific imaging formula where the effective focal length is determined by the domain modulation and pump wavelength. Additionally, two nonlocal images can be retrieved when the entangled photon pair is generated under two concurrent noncollinear phase-matching geometries. Our work provides a principle and method to realize lensless ghost imaging, which may be extended to other wavelengths and stimulate new types of practical quantum technologies.
