Abstract:Modern agriculture calls for efficient and environmental-friendly agricultural water and land management practice. Agricultural water and land utilization mode has a great impact on the amount of carbon emissions, and thus the aim of this work is to propose an optimal modeling approach for generating efficient agricultural water and land management alternatives and reducing carbon emission in agricultural water-energy-food nexus system. This study presents a novel approach consisting of carbon footprint lifecycle assessment method and bi-level multi-objective stochastic programming model. The proposed approach has contributions in following aspects: (1) the environmental impact of different resource allocation strategies can be measured in optimization (2) the spatial variability of spatial data (e.g., ET0 and precipitation); can be fully reflected via remote sensing information; (3) tradeoffs among two decision-making levels and their conflicting objectives under randomness of surface water availability can be addressed. The proposed approach was applied to the middle reaches of the Heihe River basin, northwest China. After solving the proposed model, the optimal water and land use alternatives under different hydrological years can be generated. Decision makers can plan agricultural production strategy according to optimization schemes, and reduce carbon emission through increasing vegetable cultivation and surface water utilization. Furthermore, the performance comparison of different models indicated that fierce conflicts exist between income fairness and economic benefits. The comprehensive evaluation value of bi-level multi-objective stochastic programming model is 0.7036, which is highest among single- and multi-objective models, showing that such model has obvious advantage in dealing with multiple decision-making levels and conflicting objectives. This approach can help decision makers of similar regions manage the agricultural production system in a more efficient and environment-friendly way.

Abstract:This study explores the water consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Yarkand River Basin, focusing on their dynamic interactions across industrial sectors. Utilizing environmental input–output analysis (IOA), the CROPWAT model, and life cycle assessment (LCA), we quantified the historical evolution of physical and virtual water cycles in relation to the water–carbon nexus. Our findings reveal that the planting industry, particularly the production of export-oriented, water-intensive crops like cotton, significantly contributes to both blue and green water consumption, exacerbating regional water scarcity. The persistent external market demand drives this over-extraction, further strained by the basin's limited water retention capabilities. Although advancements have been made in reducing the per-unit water footprint of crops, total water consumption continues to rise due to agricultural expansion, intensifying pressure on blue water resources. Additionally, agricultural GHG emissions have surged, driven by increased electricity consumption, heavy fertilizer use, and escalating soil N2O emissions. In light of these challenges, our research underscores the critical need for integrated resource management strategies that align with sustainable development goals. By promoting efficient water allocation within the agricultural sector and diversifying crop structures downstream, we can enhance ecosystem resilience and reduce environmental degradation. Furthermore, the advancement of value-added agricultural processing and the implementation of innovative water conservation technologies are essential for fostering economic sustainability. These strategies not only mitigate the environmental impacts associated with agricultural practices but also strengthen the region's adaptive capacity in the face of climate change and fluctuating market demands. Our findings contribute to the broader discourse on sustainable agricultural practices, emphasizing the interconnectedness of water management, climate resilience, and economic viability in arid regions.

Global Land-Water Nexus: Agricultural Land and Freshwater Use Embodied in Worldwide Supply Chains

Abstract:As agricultural land and freshwater inextricably interrelate and interact with each other, the conventional water and land policy in "silos" should give way to nexus thinking when formulating the land and water management strategies. This study constructs a systems multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model to expound global land-water nexus by simultaneously tracking agricultural land and freshwater use flows along the global supply chains. Furthermore, land productivity and irrigation water requirements of 160 crops in different regions are investigated to reflect the land-water linkage. Results show that developed economies (e.g., USA and Japan) and major large developing economies (e.g., mainland China and India) are the overriding drivers of agricultural land and freshwater use globally. In general, significant net transfers of these two resources are identified from resource-rich and less-developed economies to resource-poor and more-developed economies. For some crops, blue water productivity is inversely related to land productivity, indicating that irrigation water consumption is sometimes at odds with land use. The results could stimulus international cooperation for sustainable land and freshwater management targeting on original suppliers and final consumers along the global supply chains. Moreover, crop-specific land-water linkage could provide insights for trade-off decisions on minimizing the environmental impacts on local land and water resources.

Abstract:Carbon emission-led climate change affects food security. Although irrigation builds climate resilience and supports the stability of the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus, irrigation access and reliability are constrained by energy access, whereas increasing energy demand exacerbates carbon emissions. This feedback demonstrates the need to include carbon in the nexus, leading to a WEF–carbon (WEFC) nexus. Solar irrigation can be a four-way win, as it contributes to positive water, energy and food interactions without increasing carbon emissions. This paper empirically assesses farmer-owned solar irrigation in Gujarat, India, and identifies mechanisms for mainstreaming solar irrigation and stakeholders' roles in the WEFC nexus.

Abstract:With rapid industrialization and urbanization, scarce water resources are more and more being transferred from low-value agricultural use to high-value industrial and domestic uses in China. Along with water shortages, inefficiencies are apparent in Chinese agricultural water utilization. The causes of these inefficiencies include attenuated property rights, artificially low water prices, lack of farmer participation in irrigation districts management and fragmented government management. It is concluded, against the background of a transitional economy, that the lack of economic incentives in the allocation of water is the principal reason why shortage and waste coexists in Chinese irrigated agriculture. The challenge now facing decision makers is how to resolve the conflict between increasing food demand and decreasing water supply without undermining the growth of cities and the industrial sector. Owing to failures in both markets and government in water allocation, it is argued that it is necessary to establish a quasi-market for water.

Abstract:Challenges of high energy efficiency, water saving, low-carbon emissions, waste management and food saving have been considerable pressures on both regional and global sustainable development. This paper reviews the water-energy extended nexuses (e.g. food, greenhouse gases, waste, pollution, land and others) from the perspective of relationship and practicability in relieving the challenges towards environmentally-related sustainable development goals. A specific issue identified is that with the popularity of "nexus" and extension beyond resources nexus, the positioning and identity of nexuses become ambiguous. In most cases, nexus is a more attractively sounding term to replace specific expressions such as multi-criteria optimisation, trade-offs, correlation/relationship, input-output assessment, material flow analysis, and integrated design. The methodologies (e.g. input-output analysis and life cycle assessment) entail needing to be adequately integrated or expanded for diverse water-energy extended nexuses. It is crucial for evaluating resource flows in multiple regions and sectors and assessing the associated environment-economic impacts. A standardised understanding like establishing life cycle assessment and even more quantified footprints could ensure that the nexus would not fall as the group of a buzzword and contribute to sustainable development goals. This study serves as a stepping stone to establish quantified characteristics or components as eligibility to classify as nexus approaches and studies.

Abstract:Water scarcity, limited land resources and global warming are the most challenging issues facing sustainable agricultural development, and modern agriculture requires efficient and environmentally friendly agricultural water and land management practices. This paper proposes a water-energy-food-carbon nexus system optimization model, which aims to formulate a scientific and rational water and land resource allocation strategy for sustainable agricultural development to increase irrigation water productivity, reduce carbon emissions and enhance regional agriculture competitiveness. First, the carbon footprint life cycle assessment method was used to measure carbon sinks and carbon emissions across the ecosystem. Second, a multiobjective nonlinear programming model with the goal of maximizing irrigation water productivity, minimizing carbon emissions, and maximizing the competitiveness of low-carbon agriculture is established. Finally, an empirical study is performed in the Yellow River Basin, and an elitist nondominated sorting genetic algorithm is used to solve the model. The research results show that the water-energy-food-carbon nexus system optimization model based on uncertain conditions established in this paper, can maximize resource utilization efficiency and effectively measure the impact of regional agricultural production on the environment. It has reference significance for the realization of carbon neutrality in the region.

Abstract:By storing carbon (C), soil provide natural solutions to climate change. However, implementing C sequestration practices on a large scale is complex because sequestration rates vary with climatic conditions, soil types and agricultural management. Researchers face challenges identifying effective C sequestration practices in arid and semi-arid regions because precipitation limits plant biomass production. We discuss the "more carbon per drop" approach to enhance C sequestration in a water-limited environment. This approach emphasizes increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by enhancing water use efficiency and soil water storage. Agricultural strategies that increase the amount and diversity of C inputs, improve nutrient availability for crops, and minimize soil disturbance can simultaneously sequester soil C and enhance soil water storage. Strategies for enhancing SOC sequestration while increasing soil water storage could benefit farmers in arid and semi-arid regions because they can maintain a net-zero or net-negative C footprint. Therefore, implementing policies that promote SOC sequestration and soil water storage could provide natural climate solutions to the vast areas of the world facing water limitations. Abstract:Despite the tremendous contribution of irrigated agriculture in addressing global food security, there is still confusion for farmers and governments about the choice of irrigation mode owing to the drastic environmental impacts of irrigation, including water shortage, energy crisis, and global warming. Exploring the agricultural water-energy‐carbon (WEC) nexus under different irrigation modes helps to accomplish the multi-objective of water & energy saving and carbon emission reduction. In this paper, a conceptual framework was nominated to evaluate the water & energy consumption and carbon emissions for agricultural irrigation at township level and quantitatively discuss the complex interaction by the coupling coordination degree (CCD) of the WEC system under different irrigation modes. We discovered that irrigation modes profoundly affect water and energy consumption and carbon emissions in agriculture, as well as the spatial distribution of CCD from WEC systems. Townships under irrigation mode with diversion and irrigation projects as the primary method (WDI) clustered together in the north and east with highest water consumption and carbon emissions. While townships under irrigation mode with rain-fed agriculture as the primary method (PI) accumulated in the west and south with lower water consumption and carbon emissions. Meanwhile, the CCD of the WEC nexus system was in basic coordination (0.40) and showed an unbalanced spatial distribution pattern with high in the southeast and low in the northwest. By comparing four irrigation modes, the coupling level of the WEC nexus system under GI mode was better and PI mode was the least ideal. This study helps to further understand agricultural WEC nexus under different irrigation modes and provide references for local governments in selecting appropriate irrigation modes to realize water-energy saving and carbon emission reduction in agricultural activities.

Abstract:Concerns about the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus have motivated many discussions regarding new approaches for managing water, energy and food resources. Despite the progress in recent years, there remain many challenges in scientific research on the WEF nexus, while implementation as a management tool is just beginning. The scientific challenges are primarily related to data, information and knowledge gaps in our understanding of the WEF inter-linkages. Our ability to untangle the WEF nexus is also limited by the lack of systematic tools that could address all the trade-offs involved in the nexus. Future research needs to strengthen the pool of information. It is also important to develop integrated software platforms and tools for systematic analysis of the WEF nexus. The experience made in integrated water resources management in the hydrological community, especially in the framework of Panta Rhei, is particularly well suited to take a lead in these advances.
Decarbonizing Water: The Potential to Apply the Voluntary Carbon Market toward Global Water Security

Abstract:The increase in global water insecurity is one of the first perceivable effects of climate change. Two billion people are now without access to safe drinking water, and four billion experience water stress at least once a year, primarily in low per-capita emission countries. This nexus between climate change and water insecurity has significant implications for the global economy, with the water sector contributing 10% of global emissions. Though traditionally a local issue, climate finance mechanisms like the voluntary carbon market (VCM) present opportunities for a global, sustainable, performance-based funding stream to address water insecurity. Since 2010, water-related carbon projects have yielded over 45 million emission reduction credits. Our analysis estimates a global potential of over 1.6 billion tCO2e per year across various water project subsectors. At a $10 per credit average, this could attract over $160 billion in investments over the next decade, enhancing global water security. However, barriers like high intervention costs and limited technologies hinder widespread implementation, creating a tension between standardized and bespoke credits. We present case studies, spanning drinking water initiatives to the wastewater treatment sector that illustrate VCM's role in channeling private sector capital for water security in climate-vulnerable regions.
Unfolding the synergy and interaction of water-land-food nexus for sustainable resource management: A supernetwork analysis

Abstract:Given the large amounts of water, land, and food embodied in the trade of goods and services, a key step in decoupling extensive resource consumption from the economic system is to understand the full impact of socioeconomic development on the water-land-food nexus. This study integrates input-output analysis, ecological network analysis, and Dempster-Shafer evidence theory into a supernetwork model to detect the water-land-food nexus among economic sectors with an aim to explore effective strategic paths for resource management and to facilitate the construction of a resource-saving society. Results show that most sectors of China are resource inefficient and that all resource systems are unsustainable as reflected in the low performance of their Finn's cycling index and system robustness. Meanwhile, results of flow networks analysis show an extremely uneven land resource allocation where more than 94% of the land used in China is classified as direct agricultural land. The water-land-food nexus can gain resource saving bonus via enhancing the robustness of economy. However, the co-benefits from the nexus are negligibly small for the resource utilization efficiency. The results also indicate that the relevant resource-saving policies on food and water are highly likely to gain resource co-benefits due to their similarities in sectoral importance. Correspondingly, a set of strategic measures, including adopting a tiered resource price, deepening industrial convergence of agriculture, enhancing agriculture-food nexus, and managing water or land use from the food consumer side, are designed to build a resource-saving society. The findings of this study can provide additional insights into the impacts of the economy on the water-land-food nexus, which is beneficial for achieving an efficient and coordinated management of resources.

Abstract:Water is a stabilizer for production and life in the arid areas. According to research shared by the Pacific Institute and The Guardian, there were 228 incidents of water conflict globally in 2022. Therefore, comprehensive measures are necessary to achieve regional water security. This objective can be achieved by the application of interdisciplinary and professional approaches through establishing a dynamic equilibrium of the different water consumers, and trade-offs and synergies for water allocation between them. A multi-objective optimization model is proposed for managing the water-agriculture-energy-environment (WAEE) nexus in water-scarce areas. Real and integer-encoded multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (EMCMO) were applied to solving management models. Multiple objectives, such as the maximization of economic benefits from agriculture and hydropower generation, the minimization of ecological water shortages for local plants, and the minimization of environmental risks influenced by land use and food supply, were defined in the model. The model was applied to the Yanqi Basin, an important agriculture and energy producer in Xinjiang province, Northwest China. The results indicated that (1) the four-dimensional Pareto solution set has the advantage of presenting the WAEE nexus, highlighting the trade-offs and synergies between high-value crops, surface water, and groundwater, ecological water demand, hydropower generation and total nitrogen and phosphorus loading (TNP); (2) An excessive increase in the agricultural economy will increase TNP loading and agricultural non-point source pollution; (3) Optimization of WAFE for local ecosystem restoration. Optimization in a wet year, reduced agricultural economic benefits by 0.20%, and agricultural TNP loading by 13.19% while increasing ecological water by 58.33%, and hydropower generation by 3.98%; in a normal year, reduced agricultural economic benefits by 6.62%, agricultural TNP loading by 13.19% while increasing ecological water by 46.43%, and hydropower generation by 0.79%; in a dry year, reduced agricultural economic benefits by 17.19%, agricultural TNP loading by 9.72%, and hydropower generation by 16.18% while increasing ecological water by 42.86%. The trade-offs and synergies of the WAEE nexus also apply to other similar water-scarce areas.

Abstract:Irrigated agriculture is essential to satisfying the globally increasing demand for food and bio-based products. Yet, in water scarce regions, water-use for irrigation aggravates the competition for the use of water for other purposes, such as energy production, drinking water and sanitation. Solutions for sustainable food production through irrigated agriculture require a systemic approach to assess benefits and trade-offs across sectors. Here, the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus has become an important concept in natural resource management. It has been conceptualized to analyze linkages and trade-offs between the three sectors, across temporal and spatial scales. However, the concept has so far mainly been conceptual, with little empirical evidence or proof of concept in real world cases. The objective of this paper was to take stock of the rapidly advancing literature on the WEF nexus in irrigated agriculture, and to analyze how the concept was actually implemented in research studies, and how the nexus between water, food and energy was actually dealt with. The study period ranges from 2011 to 2019, and includes 194 articles. Results showed that the WEF nexus is indeed very relevant in irrigated agriculture, and the respective literature makes up one third of all WEF nexus papers. Modeling and empirical research have caught up with conceptual synthesis studies during the last four years, thereby indicating that the WEF nexus concept is indeed increasingly operationalized. However, most studies addressed the WEF nexus from a perspective of either socioeconomic, technological or environmental categories, and they place one of the dimensions of water, food or energy into the foreground. To address sustainable development, there is a need to fully integrate across research disciplines and thematic dimensions. Such studies are only starting to emerge. These findings are an important evidence-base for future WEF nexus research on irrigated agriculture, in support of sustainable solutions for water scarce regions, especially in settings undergoing transformations.

Abstract:The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus is quickly becoming one of the most critical global environmental challenges of the twenty first century. However, WEF systems are inherently complex; they typically are dynamic and span multiple land or agro-ecosystems at a regional or global scale. Addressing this challenge requires a systems approach to optimal and sustainable resource management across multiple dimensions. To that end, using Pajaro Valley (California) as a case study, our research aims to (1) highlight synergies and tradeoffs in food and water production, (2) build a dynamic framework capable of examining intertemporal resource relationships, and (3) detail the steps required to develop incentive-compatible financing of the resulting management plans when benefits are not distributed uniformly across users. Using a stylized model, we find that in the long run, inland growers benefit from the halting of seawater intrusion (SWI) due to overpumping of groundwater. We also calculate that the water provided by the proposed College Lake Multi-Objective Management Program-a plan designed to halt SWI and support sustainable water and agricultural development in the region-will generate net revenue of $40-58 million per year, compared to an annualized cost of less than $3 million. An equal cost-sharing plan would be desirable if the benefit of the project exceeded $1,268 per year for each well owner. Since this may not necessarily be the case for smaller well owners, one possible alternative is to allocate costs in proportion to expected benefits for each user.

Abstract:Promoting the transformation of water, land, energy and carbon management to "multi-resource" synergy contributes to thoroughly assess the carbon reduction potential of regional human behavior in response to climate change from the angle of the source of production and the coupling development of resources, which is significant in promoting resource conservation and improving production efficiency. This study conducts a conceptual framework to evaluate the impact of water utilization changes on the water-land-energy-carbon (WLEC) nexus in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), and quantitatively discusses the complex interactions between water utilization changes and the total WLEC system and subsystems by applying the coupling coordination degree. Results present that: (1) the overall difference in the water utilization quantity of the YRB is expanding, and the water utilization types and efficiency show significant heterogeneity of flow segments. (2) Incorporating water into the land-energy-carbon system leads to an increase in the overall coupling and coupling coordination values in the YRB, and different reaches show different growth heterogeneity. (3) The coordination levels of the two-factor system consisting of the water and land-energy-carbon subsystems will be superimposed or canceled out, thus impacting the coupling coordination of the WLEC nexus. This study helps to further clarify the impact of water utilization changes on the land-energy-carbon system and its internal subsystems, and the combination of the WLEC nexus can provide references for governments to establish regional synergistic development models of water-land-energy resources and reduce carbon emission with their resource advantages.

Abstract:Multisectoral integration has been at the core of sustainability debates and is continuously rearticulated though different concepts. Following the 2007–2008 financial, food, and energy crises, a new concept, the water–energy–food nexus, gained prominence to identify trade-offs and synergies between water, energy, and food systems and guide the development of cross-sectoral policies. The nexus is essentially a systems-based perspective that explicitly recognizes these three systems as both interconnected and interdependent, and thus integrated approaches are required that move beyond sectoral, policy, and disciplinary silos. The nexus is also a political process, one in which the interplay of different types of power, as well as the actors wielding them, is not just a procedurally technical one. This tension between the nexus as a complex system and the nexus as a political process constitutes the core debating idea, in terms of feasibility, methods, and theory, in this article.

Abstract:Carbon credits, a voluntary market mechanism to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, can incentivize climate action. We evaluate the potential and eligibility of Conservation Agriculture (CA) practices for carbon credit generation in India under Verra's VM0042 methodology. Using farmer surveys and remote sensing data, we assess the eligibility based on the following conditions: Additionality Condition (GHG emission reductions to exceed legal requirements and the weighted mean adoption rate to be 5% decrease in crop yields), and Quantitative Adjustment Condition (reduction in chemical fertilizer use by > 5%). Our analysis shows that CA has the potential to increase farmers' carbon credit earnings by USD 18/ha and USD 30/ha in Bihar and Punjab, respectively. Punjab's ban on crop residue burning and the fact that > 20% of the area unburned limits the full economic realization of CA through carbon markets, decreasing potential income to USD 16/ha. A 60% increase in carbon prices from the current norm (USD 25) is required to encourage wider adoption of CA. Zero tillage of wheat in both Punjab and Bihar and reduction of nitrogen fertilizer overuse in Punjab fulfil all the conditions and are eligible for carbon farming projects.

Abstract:Background: Carbon credits are an increasingly prevalent market-based mechanism used to subsidize household water treatment technologies (HWT). This involves generating credits through the reduction of carbon emissions from boiling water by providing a technology that reduces greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change. Proponents claim this process delivers health and environmental benefits by providing clean drinking water and reducing greenhouse gases. Selling carbon credits associated with HWT projects requires rigorous monitoring to ensure households are using the HWT and achieving the desired benefits of the device. Critics have suggested that the technologies provide neither the benefits of clean water nor reduced emissions. This study explores the perspectives of carbon credit and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) experts on HWT carbon credit projects. Methods: Thirteen semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants from the WASH and carbon credit development sectors. The interviews explored perceptions of the two groups with respect to the procedures applied in the Gold Standard methodology for trading Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) credits. Results: Agreement among the WASH and carbon credit experts existed for the concept of suppressed demand and parameters in the baseline water boiling test. Key differences, however, existed. WASH experts' responses highlighted a focus on objectively verifiable data for monitoring carbon projects while carbon credit experts called for contextualizing observed data with the need for flexibility and balancing financial viability with quality assurance. Conclusions: Carbon credit projects have the potential to become an important financing mechanism for clean energy in low- and middle-income countries. Based on this research we recommend that more effort be placed on building consensus on the underlying assumptions for obtaining carbon credits from HWT projects, as well as the approved methods for monitoring correct and consistent use of the HWT technologies in order to support public health impacts.

Abstract:Land and water are two of fundamental resources to maintain basic function of urban area. The consumption process of them are twisted together (water production needs equipment to filter raw water, and treat wastewater, agriculture land needs water to grow grain, etc.). Most current nexus studies are focusing on specific project or process. However, unveiling the pathway and destination of land use and water consumption is also important to instruct the development of city area, and to manage and save these two resources synergistically. This study applied environment input output analysis to measure the water and land consumption in a city in China, meanwhile the nexus relationship is also quantified to better understand how these two resources influence each other and further affect the industry supply chain in the city. The results showed that the agriculture is the most crucial economic sector to take land and water synergistical management, especially the production of oil seeds and corn. Besides, the Leasing and Business Services, and Residential Services and Other Services industries, the Food and Tobacco Processing and Water Conservancy, Environment and Public Facilities Management industry are also sensitive industries to implement water and land synergistical management.
