Abstract:<p>Development of a simple and efficiency antibacterial surface coating, to prevent bacteria attachment and colonization, is critically important for bio-medical application and public health. In this work, we designed and fabricated a simple multifunctional antibacterial surface based on tannic acid/Fe3+ (TA/Fe3+) adhesive layer and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-<em>co</em>-sulfobetain methacrylate) (poly(NIPAM-<em>co</em>-SBMA)) microgels via one-step codeposition techniques. This strategy have three main advantages: (i) TA/Fe3+ complex layer not only offered a good antibacterial property to surface, but also was similar to affection of polydopamine as adhesive layer combing microgels with substrate. (ii) Functional microgel particles both had antifouling and bacterial releasing capacities, endowing multifunctional antibacterial mechanisms with tannic acid to surface. (iii) This strategy provided a simple and efficiency antibacterial surface, eliminating traditional tedious techniques. Moreover, this novel antibacterial method endowed surfaces with highly antibacterial efficiency over ~93.0% and zwitterionic polymer SBMA component of microgels forming hydration layer significantly prevented bacterial adhesion and colonization from <em>E. coli</em> and <em>S. aureus</em> for 3 days. While because of thermoresponsive property of NIPAM component, the surface could be removed almost all of the dead bacteria and other debris by lowering the temperature. This work is promising to develop a novel, highly efficient and multifunctional antimicrobial surfaces for potential bio-medical applications.</p>
