Abstract:This paper discusses pseudospectra and stability radii for structured nonlinear matrix functions, such as Hermitian, skew‐Hermitian, H‐even, H‐odd, complex symmetric, and complex skew‐symmetric. To compute pseudospectra and stability radii, eigenvalue backward error is required. Hence, we initially present the structured eigenvalue backward error. Subsequently, we compute the structured pseudospectra using the obtained results for the eigenvalue backward error of a class of structured nonlinear matrix functions. Finally, we discuss the stability radii of the above‐structured problems arising in different applications. The paper also generalizes the results on the eigenvalue backward error of matrix polynomials in the literature for the above structures.

Abstract:There are classical theorems of analysis which, given certain conditions on a perturbation, assert stability of the essential and absolutely continuous components of the spectrum of a self-adjoint operator. Whereas the singular component is known to be highly volatile under the weakest of all possible perturbations, -- rank one. In this note I announce a theorem which asserts that, nevertheless, the singular component of spectrum in an open interval is in a sense \emph{relatively stable} provided the limiting absorption principle (LAP) holds in the interval. One of the benefits of this result is the provision of a method for disproving LAP where it is suspected to fail.

Also, we give an example showing that in general it not holds that if the spectrum is continuous an operator T, then for each and > 0, the ball contains a component of , contrary to what has been announced in [J. B. Conway and B. B. Morrel, Operators that are points of spectral continuity II, Integral Equations Operator Theory 4 (1981), 459-503] page 462.

Abstract:We present an iteration for the computation of simple eigenvalues using a pseudospectrum approach. The most appealing characteristic of the proposed iteration is that it reduces the computation of a single eigenvalue to a small number of eigenvalue computations on Hermitian matrices. We show that this number is directly associated with the matrix pseudospectrum. We present numerical results and we discuss advantages and drawbacks of the method. We also discuss its relationship with an iteration that was proposed independently in [Stewart, O' Leary, ETNA, Vol 8, 1998].

Abstract:The interplay between the algebraic and analytic properties of a matrix and the geometric properties of its pseudospectrum is investigated. It is shown that one can characterize Hermitian matrices, positive semi-definite matrices, orthogonal projections, unitary matrices, etc. in terms of the pseudospectrum. Also, characterizations are given to maps on matrices leaving invariant the pseudospectrum of the sum, difference, or product of matrix pairs. It is shown that such a map is always a unitary similarity transform followed by some simple operations such as adding a constant matrix, taking the matrix transpose, or multiplying by a scalar in {1,-1}.

Abstract:The stability of an approximating sequence $(A_n)$ for an operator $A$ usually requires, besides invertibility of $A$, the invertibility of further operators, say $B, C, \dots$, that are well-associated to the sequence $(A_n)$. We study this set, $\{A,B,C,\dots\}$, of so-called stability indicators of $(A_n)$ and connect it to the asymptotics of $\|A_n\|$, $\|A_n^{-1}\|$ and $\kappa(A_n)=\|A_n\|\|A_n^{-1}\|$ as well as to spectral pollution by showing that $\limsup {\rm Spec}_\varepsilon A_n= {\rm Spec}_\varepsilon A\cup{\rm Spec}_\varepsilon B\cup{\rm Spec}_\varepsilon C\cup\dots$. We further specify, for each of $\|A_n\|$, $\|A_n^{-1}\|$, $\kappa(A_n)$ and ${\rm Spec}_\varepsilon A_n$, under which conditions even convergence applies.

Transient dynamics under structured perturbations: bridging unstructured and structured pseudospectra

Abstract:The structured $\varepsilon$-stability radius is introduced as a quantity to assess the robustness of transient bounds of solutions to linear differential equations under structured perturbations of the matrix. This applies to general linear structures such as complex or real matrices with a given sparsity pattern or with restricted range and corange, or special classes such as Toeplitz matrices. The notion conceptually combines unstructured and structured pseudospectra in a joint pseudospectrum, allowing for the use of resolvent bounds as with unstructured pseudospectra and for structured perturbations as with structured pseudospectra. We propose and study an algorithm for computing the structured $\varepsilon$-stability radius. This algorithm solves eigenvalue optimization problems via suitably discretized rank-1 matrix differential equations that originate from a gradient system. The proposed algorithm has essentially the same computational cost as the known rank-1 algorithms for computing unstructured and structured stability radii. Numerical experiments illustrate the behavior of the algorithm.

Validated error bounds for pseudospectral approximation of delay differential equations: unstable manifolds

Abstract:Pseudospectral approximation provides a means to approximate the dynamics of delay differential equations (DDE) by ordinary differential equations (ODE). This article develops a computer-aided algorithm to determine the distance between the unstable manifold of a DDE and the unstable manifold of the approximating pseudospectral ODE. The algorithm is based upon the parametrization method. While a-priori the parametrization method for a vector-valued ODE involves computing a sequence of vector-valued Taylor coefficients, we show that for the pseudospectral ODE, due to its specific structure, the problem reduces to finding a sequence of scalars, which significantly simplifies the problem.

Abstract:We study discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators on ℓ2(Z)$${\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})}$$ with potentials defined by γ-Hölder functions. We prove a general statement that for γ > 1/2 and under the condition of positive Lyapunov exponents, measure of the spectrum at irrational frequencies is the limit of measures of spectra of periodic approximants. An important ingredient in our analysis is a general result on uniformity of convergence from above in the subadditive ergodic theorem for strictly ergodic cocycles.

Abstract:This paper discusses the stabilizability, weak stabilizability, exact observability and robust quadratic stabilizability of linear stochastic control systems. By means of the spectrum technique of the generalized Lyapunov operator, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for stabilizability and weak stabilizability of stochastic systems, respectively. Some new concepts called unremovable spectrums, strong solutions, and weakly feedback stabilizing solutions are introduced. An unremovable spectrum theorem is given, which generalizes the corresponding theorem of deterministic systems to stochastic systems. A stochastic Popov-Belevith-Hautus (PBH) criterion for exact observability is obtained. For applications, we give a comparison theorem for generalized algebraic Riccati equations (GAREs), and two results on Lyapunov-type equations are obtained, which improve the previous works. Finally, we also discuss robust quadratic stabilization of uncertain stochastic systems, and a necessary and sufficient condition is given for quadratic stabilization via a linear matrix inequality (LMI).

Bounds on unstable spectrum for dispersive Hamiltonian PDEs

Abstract:We study quasi-periodic eigenvalue problems that arise in the stability analysis of periodic traveling wave solutions to Hamiltonian PDEs. We establish bounds on regions in the complex plane when the eigenvalues may deviate from the imaginary axis, and estimates for the number of such off-axis eigenvalues. These relations hold when the dispersion relation grows sufficiently rapidly in the wavenumber. The proofs involve a Gershgorin disk argument together with the Hamiltonian symmetry of the spectrum. The results are applicable to a broad class of nonlinear dispersive equations including the generalized Korteweg--de Vries, Benjamin--Bona--Mahoney, and Kawanhara equations.

Quantitative spectral stability for compact operators

Abstract:This paper deals with quantitative spectral stability for compact operators acting on $L^2(X,m)$, where $(X,m)$ is a measure space. Under fairly general assumptions, we provide a characterization of the dominant term of the asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue variation in this abstract setting. Many of the results about quantitative spectral stability available in the literature can be recovered by our analysis. Furthermore, we illustrate our result with several applications, e.g. quantitative spectral stability for a Robin to Neumann problem, conformal transformations of Riemann metrics, Dirichlet forms under the removal of sets of small capacity, and for families of pseudo-differentials operators.

Abstract:We consider numerical approximations of ill-posed elliptic problems with conditional stability. The notion of optimal error estimates is defined including both convergence with respect to discretisation and perturbations in data. The rate of convergence is determined by the conditional stability of the underlying continuous problem and the polynomial order of the approximation space. A proof is given that no approximation can converge at a better rate than that given by the definition without increasing the sensitivity to perturbations, thus justifying the concept. A recently introduced class of primal-dual finite element methods with weakly consistent regularisation is recalled and the associated error estimates are shown to be optimal in the sense of this definition.

Approximating Continuous Spectra of Hyperbolic Systems with Summation-by-Parts Finite Difference Operators

Abstract:In this work we explore the fidelity of numerical approximations to continuous spectra of hyperbolic partial differential equation systems. We are particularly interested in the ability of discrete methods to accurately discover sources of physical instabilities. By focusing on the perturbed equations that arise in linearized problems, we apply high-order accurate summation-by-parts finite difference operators, with weak enforcement of boundary conditions through the simulataneous-approximation-term technique, which leads to a provably stable numerical discretization with formal order of accuracy given by $p = 2, 3, 4$ and $5$. We derive analytic solutions using Laplace transform methods, which provide important ground truth for ensuring numerical convergence at the correct theoretical rate. We find that the continuous spectrum is better captured with mesh refinement, although dissipative strict stability (where the growth rate of the discrete problem is bounded above by the continuous) is not obtained. However, we also find that sole reliance on mesh refinement can be a problematic means for determining physical growth rates as some eigenvalues emerge (and persist with mesh refinement) based on spatial order of accuracy but are non-physical. We suggest that numerical methods be used to approximate discrete spectra when numerical stability is guaranteed and convergence of the discrete spectra is evident with both mesh refinement and increasing order of accuracy.

Abstract:Stability concepts arising in the literature on absolute stability, difference inclusions and interval matrices are all shown to be equivalent to simultaneous asymptotic stability of a class of linear time-varying discrete systems and, in turn, to exponential stability. This enables the classification of an interval matrix stability test due to Bauer et al., a Lyapunov indicator test due to Barabanov and a constructive Lyapunov function test due to Brayton and Tong into a hierarchy of stability tests. Some applications of these tests are given and it is observed that they are not, in general, polynomial-time tests.

Abstract:For a recent new numerical method for computing so-called robust Padé approximants through SVD techniques, the authors gave numerical evidence that such approximants are insensitive to perturbations in the data and do not have so-called spurious poles, that is, poles with close-by zero or poles with small residuals. A black box procedure for eliminating spurious poles would have a major impact on the convergence theory of Padé approximants since it is known that convergence in capacity plus the absence of poles in some domain D implies locally uniform convergence in D.In the present paper we provide a proof for forward stability (or robustness) and show the absence of spurious poles for the subclass of so-called well-conditioned Padé approximants. We also give a numerical example of some robust Padé approximant which has spurious poles and discuss related questions. It turns out that it is not sufficient to discuss only linear algebra properties of the underlying rectangular Toeplitz matrix, since in our results other matrices like Sylvester matrices also occur. These types of matrices have been used before in numerical greatest common divisor computations.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to generalized non-commensurate fractional systems. To this end, we first consider fractional systems with rational orders and introduce a criterion that is necessary and sufficient to ensure the stability of such systems. Next, from the fractional-order pseudospectrum definition proposed by Šanca et al., we formulate the concept of a rational approximation for the fractional spectrum of a noncommensurate fractional systems with general, not necessarily rational, orders. Our first important new contribution is to show the equivalence between the fractional spectrum of a noncommensurate linear system and its rational approximation. With this result in hand, we use ideas developed in our earlier work to demonstrate the stability of an equilibrium point to nonlinear systems in arbitrary finite-dimensional spaces. A second novel aspect of our work is the fact that the approach is constructive. Finally, we give numerical simulations to illustrate the merit of the proposed theoretical results.
