Abstract:Metasurfaces composed of spatially arranged ultrathin subwavelength elements are promising photonic devices for manipulating optical wavefronts,with potential applications in holography,metalens,and multiplexing com-munications.Finding microstructures that meet light modulation requirements is always a challenge in designing metasurfaces,where parameter sweep,gradient-based inverse design,and topology optimization are the most commonly used design methods in which the massive electromagnetic iterations require the design computational cost and are sometimes prohibitive.Herein,we propose a fast inverse design method that combines a physics-based neural network surrogate model(NNSM)with an optimization algorithm.The NNSM,which can generate an accurate electromagnetic response from the geometric topologies of the meta-atoms,is constructed for electro-magnetic iterations,and the optimization algorithm is used to search for the on-demand meta-atoms from the phase library established by the NNSM to realize an inverse design.This method addresses two important prob-lems in metasurface design:fast and accurate electromagnetic wave phase prediction and inverse design through a single phase-shift value.As a proof-of-concept,we designed an orbital angular momentum(de)multiplexer based on a phase-type metasurface,and 200 Gbit/s quadrature-phase shift-keying signals were successfully transmitted with a bit error rate approaching 1.67×10-6.Because the design is mainly based on an optimization algorithm,it can address the"one-to-many"inverse problem in other micro/nano devices such as integrated photonic circuits,waveguides,and nano-antennas.

Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces are planar nanostructured devices that are industrially attractive in part because they utilize high-throughput microelectronic fabrication techniques for implementation. It is therefore critical to develop design paradigms that can balance the realization of highly efficient wavefront responses together with device manufacturability. We introduce a gradient-based design framework for freeform metasurfaces in which nanoscale elements are explicitly constrained to feature basic shapes, nearly uniform feature sizes, and exceptionally low aspect ratios. In spite of the apparent uniformity of the metasurface geometric features, the devices are able to utilize nonlocal near-field optical coupling to achieve highly efficient and extreme wavefront scattering beyond conventional design methodologies. Utilizing this approach, we design facile high-numerical-aperture devices such as beam deflectors and large-area metalenses capable of diffraction-limited focusing. We anticipate that these concepts can facilitate the design and integration of metasurfaces into monolithic optical systems.

Abstract:Deep learning not only brings great changes to the field of image processing and voice recognition, but it also gradually affects the design of electromagnetic devices. Here, we propose an inverse design method based on neural networks to automatically output metasurface structure with controllable working bandwidth for linear polarization-conversion. As a result, relative bandwidth can be flexibly selected from 0 to 76% in the range of 7–20 GHz. The proposed method provides a platform to accelerate the on-demand design of meta-polarizer and other versatile devices for real-world applications.

Abstract:Electromagnetic metasurfaces have attracted significant interest recently due to their low profile and advantageous applications. Practically, many metasurface designs start with a set of constraints for the radiated far-field, such as main-beam direction(s) and side lobe levels, and end with a non-uniform physical structure for the surface. This problem is quite challenging, since the required tangential field transformations are not completely known when only constraints are placed on the scattered fields. Hence, the required surface properties cannot be solved for analytically. Moreover, the translation of the desired surface properties to the physical unit cells can be time-consuming and difficult, as it is often a one-to-many mapping in a large solution space. Here, we divide the inverse design process into two steps: a macroscopic and microscopic design step. In the former, we use an iterative optimization process to find the surface properties that radiate a far-field pattern that complies with specified constraints. This iterative process exploits non-radiating currents to ensure a passive and lossless design. In the microscopic step, these optimized surface properties are realized with physical unit cells using machine learning surrogate models. The effectiveness of this end-to-end synthesis process is demonstrated through measurement results of a beam-splitting prototype.

Abstract:Meta-optics has witnessed substantial advancements in recent years. Nevertheless, conventional forward design methodologies are encountering difficulties in the face of escalating demands for functional complexity. Inverse design aims to optimize meta-optical designs, but currently limited to expensive and powerful numerical solvers, it is mainly applied to simple functions devices, and is experimentally difficult to implement. In this paper, we put forth a generalized inverse design framework that facilitates the design of aperiodic complex functional meta-optics. The framework, consisting of a high-performance forward simulator model and a global optimization model, achieves system-level objective optimization. We design and implement a Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) broadband achromatic metalens. The numerical findings indicate that the chromatic aberration is effectively rectified within the operational wavelength range of 8.6-11.4 mu m, exhibiting a maximum focal length deviation percentage of 5.88 %. Moreover, the actual Numerical Aperture (NA) of the proposed LWIR broadband achromatic metalens attains a value of 0.54. The design of this broadband achromatic metalens is anticipated to have significant utility in the domain of LWIR integrated optical systems.

Abstract:By exploiting the generalized form of Snell’s law, metasurfaces afford optical engineers a tremendous increase in degrees of design freedom compared to conventional optical components. These “meta-optics” can achieve unprecedented levels of performance through engineered wavelength-, angular-, and polarization-dependent responses which can be tailored by arranging subwavelength unit cells, or meta-atoms, in an intelligent way. Moreover, these metaatoms can be constructed from phase change materials which give the added flexibility of realizing reconfigurable metaoptics. Devices such as achromatic flat lenses and non-mechanical zoom lenses are becoming a reality through the advent of metasurface-augmented optical systems. However, achieving high-performance meta-optics relies heavily on proper meta-atom design. This challenge is best overcome through the use of advanced inverse-design tools and state-ofthe- art optimization algorithms. To this end, a number of successful meta-device inverse-design approaches have been demonstrated in the literature including those based on topology optimization, deep learning, and global optimization. While each has its pros and cons, multi-objective optimization strategies have proven quite successful do their ability to optimize problems with multiple competing objectives: a common occurrence in optical design. Moreover, multiobjective algorithms produce a Pareto Set of optimal solutions that designers can analyze in order to directly study the tradeoffs between the various design goals. In our presentation, we will introduce an efficient multi-objective optimization enabled design framework for the generation of broadband and multifunctional meta-atoms. Additionally, several meta-optic design examples will be presented, and future research directions discussed.

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces offer a new paradigm to realize optical nonlinear devices with new and unparalleled behavior compared to nonlinear crystals, due to the interplay between photonic resonances and materials properties. The complicated interdependency between efficiency and emission directionality of the nonlinear optical signal on the existence, localization, and lifetimes of photonic resonances, as well as on the nonlinear susceptibility, makes it extremely difficult to design optimal metasurfaces using conventional materials and geometries. Inverse design using topology optimization is a powerful design tool for photonic structures, but traditional approaches developed for linear photonics are not suitable for such high dimensional nonlinear problems. Here, we use a topology optimization approach to inverse-design a fabrication-robust nonlinear metasurface that includes quantum-engineered resonant nonlinearities in semiconductor heterostructures for efficient and directional second harmonic generation. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that under practical constraints, among all the parameters, the nonlinear modal overlap emerges as the dominant parameter that enhances conversion efficiency, a finding that contrasts with intuition-driven studies that often emphasize Purcell enhancement. Our results open new opportunities for optimizing nonlinear processes in nanophotonic structures for novel light sources, quantum information applications, and communication.

Abstract:Characterization of electromagnetic wave polarization states is critical in various applications of materials, biomedical, and imaging. The emergence of metasurfaces opens up the possibility of implementing highly integrated full-Stokes imagers. Despite rapid development, prevailing schemes on metasurface-based full-Stokes imagers require interleaved or cascaded designs, inevitably resulting in performance deterioration, bulky size, and complicating the imaging procedure due to misalignment. To overcome these challenges, a non-interleaved shared-aperture full-Stokes metalens enabled by the prior-knowledge-driven inverse design methodology is proposed. The metalens can be directly deployed into imagers, performing high-accuracy diffraction-limited full-Stokes imaging without other ancillary components, breaking intrinsic constraints of efficiency and resolution in interleaved design. To demonstrate this, the metalens is integrated into the W-band passive imaging system, as an alternative solution, to perform polarimetric imaging, which reduces the reliance on the high cost and high complexity of the ortho-mode transducer and broadband correlator in traditional polarimetric radiometers. Furthermore, with the assistance of a 3D reconstruction method, the feasibility of multi-polarization information for contactless surface slope measurements is explored. This work may open new paradigms for the full-Stokes imager designing and broaden the applications of metasurface polarimetric imaging.

Abstract:Independent manipulation of transmitted and reflected light fields is a key technology for the realization of multifunctional optical applications, which can be implemented based on multilayered plasmonic or supercell subwavelength structures. However, the former is not suitable for the optical bands, while the latter is insufficient in generating large phase gradients. Here, an adjoint-optimization-based inverse design methodology is proposed, which utilizes the polarization-selective local interference between individual meta-atoms and enables monolayer dielectric metasurfaces to decouple the wavefront of transmitted and reflected optical fields. Moreover, this methodology serves to mitigate the aperiodic electromagnetic crosstalk inherent between adjacent meta-atoms, consequently leading to a significant enhancement in the performance of meta-devices. We analyzed the physical mechanism of adjoint optimization and proposed the concept of phase factors, highlighting their importance in the rapid inverse design of meta-devices-an aspect often overlooked in previous research. To demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of our method, we optimize monolayer metasurfaces with different initial structures. These devices efficiently focus and deflect x -linearly and y -linearly polarized incident light in transmission and reflection spaces, respectively. Overall, this methodology holds immense potential for designing multifunctional, high-performing metasurfaces that meet multiple constraints, opening up broad prospects for applications.

Abstract:Metasurface,composed of subwavelength nanostructures,represents a disruptive and emerging technology that enables independent control of optical field characteristics,such as phase,amplitude,polarization,and dispersion.It is of significant importance for wavefront control elements,integrated imaging systems,and wearable optoelectronic devices.Metasurfaces allow for complex simulation calculations of input wave signals at the speed of light,providing a novel approach for constructing ultra-thin,ultra-fast,high-throughput,and highly integrated low-power optical imaging platforms.This article summarizes the recent advancements in optical simulation calculations and advanced imaging based on metasurfaces,discussing the fundamental connection between the two fields.The detailed overview of metasurface applications in these fields is provided,including image processing,edge detection,phase imaging,and integrated imaging systems.Finally,the current challenges facing metasurface optical computing are highlighted,and future directions for development are outlined.

Abstract:We present a design framework for metasurface that uses a hybrid approximate solver for Maxwell’s equations, which separates the computation for the metasurface’s nanoscale and macro-scale, and thus makes large-diameter inverse design tractable on a laptop. We further demonstrate experimental realizations of ultra-large-area metasurfaces designed using this framework: (1) a lens with extended depth of field with a millimeter diameter, and (2) polychromatic lenses with diameters of up to 1 cm.

Abstract:Optical imaging has been revolutionized by metasurfaces, which offer superior spatial modulation properties for electromagnetic waves. In this review, different approaches are explored to designing and implementing metasurfaces, as well as recent advances in imaging applications that utilize them. As nanofabrication technologies continue to improve and computer algorithms become more sophisticated, even greater breakthroughs are anticipated in the field of optical imaging. Recently, metasurfaces have arisen as next‐generation optics with various merits, such as being ultrathin and lightweight with multi‐function integration. Numerous applications of metasurfaces have been demonstrated up to now, including wavefront shaping, optical imaging, hologram display, structured light generation, polarization detection, and so on. Among them, optical imaging components and techniques have been substantially promoted with the advent of metasurfaces due to their superior spatial modulation properties over electromagnetic waves. Here, the forward and reverse design approaches of metasurface and recent advances in various imaging applications based on them are reviewed. Due to the ability of arbitrary wavefront encoding, metasurfaces have been widely applied to numerous imaging applications, including diffraction‐limited imaging with aberration correction, polarization‐related imaging, high‐resolution spectral imaging, three‐dimentional (3D) imaging, and even algorithm‐assisted imaging, etc. Optical imaging applications combined with novel metasurfaces can make breakthroughs with the development of nanofabrication technologies and the improvement of computer algorithms.

Abstract:Integrated photonic circuits are created as a stable and small form factor analogue of fiber-based optical systems, from wavelength-division multiplication transceivers to more recent mode-division multiplexing components. Silicon nanowire waveguides guide the light in a way that single and few mode fibers define the direction of signal flow. Beyond communication tasks, on-chip cascaded interferometers and photonic meshes are also sought for optical computing and advanced signal processing technology. Here we review an alternative way of defining the light flow in the integrated photonic platform, using arrays of subwavelength meta-atoms or metalines for guiding the diffraction and interference of light. The integrated metasurface system mimics free-space optics, where on-chip analogues of basic optical components are developed with foundry compatible geometry, such as low-loss lens, spatial-light modulator, and other wavefront shapers. We discuss the role of metasurface in integrated photonic signal processing systems, introduce the design principles of such metasurface systems for low loss compact mode conversion, mathematical operation, diffractive optical systems for hyperspectral imaging, and tuning schemes of metasurface systems. Then we perceive reconfigurability schemes for metasurface framework, toward optical neural networks and analog photonic accelerators.

End-to-end metasurface inverse design for single-shot multi-channel imaging

Abstract:We introduce end-to-end metaoptics inverse design for multi-channel imaging: reconstruction of depth, spectral and polarization channels from a single-shot monochrome image. The proposed technique integrates a single-layer metasurface frontend with an efficient Tikhonov reconstruction backend, without any additional optics except a grayscale sensor. Our method yields multi-channel imaging by spontaneous demultiplexing: the metaoptics front-end separates different channels into distinct spatial domains whose locations on the sensor are optimally discovered by the inverse-design algorithm. We present large-area metasurface designs, compatible with standard lithography, for multi-spectral imaging, depth-spectral imaging, and ``all-in-one'' spectro-polarimetric-depth imaging with robust reconstruction performance ($\lesssim 10\%$ error with 1\% detector noise). In contrast to neural networks, our framework is physically interpretable and does not require large training sets. It can be used to reconstruct arbitrary three-dimensional scenes with full multi-wavelength spectra and polarization textures.

Abstract:Optical Fourier transform-based processing is an attractive technique due to the fast processing times and large-data rates. Furthermore, it has recently been demonstrated that certain Fourier-based processors can be realized in compact form factors using flat optics. The flat optics, however, have been demonstrated as static filters where the operator is fixed, limiting the applicability of the approach. Here, we demonstrate a reconfigurable metasurface that can be dynamically tuned to provide a range of processing modalities including bright-field imaging, low-pass and high-pass filtering, and second-order differentiation. The dynamically tunable metasurface can be directly combined with standard coherent imaging systems and operates with a numerical aperture up to 0.25 and over a 60 nm bandwidth. The ability to dynamically control light in the wave vector domain, while doing so in a compact form factor, may open new doors to applications in microscopy, machine vision, and sensing.

Abstract:Emerging reconfigurable metasurfaces offer various possibilities for programmatically manipulating electromagnetic waves across spatial, spectral, and temporal domains, showcasing great potential for enhancing terahertz applications. However, they are hindered by limited tunability, particularly evident in relatively small phase tuning over 270°, due to the design constraints with time-intensive forward design methodologies. Here, a multi-bit programmable metasurface is demonstrated capable of terahertz beam steering facilitated by a developed physics-informed inverse design (PIID) approach. Through integrating a modified coupled mode theory (MCMT) into residual neural networks, the PIID algorithm not only significantly increases the design accuracy compared to conventional neural networks but also elucidates the intricate physical relations between the geometry and the modes. Without decreasing the reflection intensity, the method achieves the enhanced phase tuning as large as 300°. Additionally, the inverse-designed programmable beam steering metasurface is experimentally validated, which is adaptable across 1-bit, 2-bit, and tri-state coding schemes, yielding a deflection angle up to 68° and broadened steering coverage. The demonstration provides a promising pathway for rapidly exploring advanced metasurface devices, with potentially great impact on communication and imaging technologies.
Inverse design of dielectric metasurface by spatial coupled mode theory

Abstract:Modeling metasurfaces with high accuracy and efficiency is challenging because they have features smaller than the wavelength but sizes much larger than the wavelength. Full wave simulation is accurate but very slow. Popular design paradigms like locally periodic approximation (LPA) reduce the computational cost by neglecting, partially or fully, near-field interactions between meta-units and treating them in an isolated manner. The coupling between meta units has been fully considered by applying temporal coupled mode theory to model the metasurface. However, this method only works for resonance-based metasurfaces. To model the broadly studied dielectric metasurfaces based on the propagation of guided modes, we propose to model the whole system using spatial coupled mode theory (SCMT) where the dielectric metasurface can be viewed as an array of truncated waveguides. An inverse design routine based on this model is then devised and applied to gain improvements over LPA in several scenarios, such as high numerical aperture lens, multi-wavelength focusing, and suppression of coma aberrations. With its accuracy and efficiency, the proposed framework can be a powerful tool to improve the performance of dielectric metasurface on various tasks.
