Abstract:
Nature Sustainability, Published online: 15 March 2021; doi:10.1038/s41893-021-00688-5
The textile industry is one of the largest polluters. Here the authors show that polyethylene is a sustainable alternative textile with water wicking and fast-drying performance. The fabrication of polyethylene fabrics is compatible with standard equipment and could be dry-coloured, further reducing water consumption.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address several key issues faced by the textile industry: 1. **Environmental Pollution**: The textile industry is the second largest polluting industry globally, second only to the oil and gas industry. It consumes a large amount of water resources, generates millions of tons of textile waste annually, and emits 5-10% of global greenhouse gases. Additionally, the maintenance of textiles during the usage phase consumes even more energy and water than the production phase. 2. **Resource Waste**: Most textiles end up being landfilled or incinerated, especially colored or blended textiles, which are difficult to sort using near-infrared scanners, resulting in very low recycling rates. 3. **Functionality and Comfort**: Traditional textile materials have deficiencies in functionality (such as moisture-wicking, quick-drying) and comfort, especially in environments that require frequent washing, drying, and reuse. 4. **Sustainability**: Finding a sustainable, high-performance alternative material to reduce the environmental footprint during the production and use of textiles. To this end, the paper proposes a new type of textile material based on polyethylene (PE), manufactured through standard textile industry processes and equipment. This PE textile material has the following characteristics: - **Efficient Moisture-Wicking and Quick-Drying**: Through fiber surface treatment and structural design, PE textile material can effectively transport moisture and dry quickly, providing passive evaporative cooling. - **Excellent Stain Resistance**: PE material itself has natural hydrophobicity, making it less prone to staining, reducing the need for energy, water, and chemicals during washing. - **Eco-Friendly Dyeing Technology**: By embedding dyes during the melt spinning process, waterless dyeing is achieved, avoiding the large amount of toxic wastewater generated in traditional dyeing processes. - **Recyclability**: PE material can be mechanically or chemically recycled, further reducing its environmental impact over its lifecycle. In summary, the paper aims to address the challenges in environmental protection, resource utilization, and functionality in the textile industry through the development and application of PE textile materials, achieving more sustainable development.
