Abstract:Stepwise multiple B-H bond activation is a major challenge in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we have developed a controlled stepwise method to monitor the process of B-H bond activation based on a meta-carborane. In this process, the metallacyclic 3 [Pd-2(C10N2H8)(2)(SCNPh)(4)(m-C2B10H10)(2)] can be achieved through non-covalent bond interactions between the carboranylthioamide ligand and transition metal fragment. Importantly, it slowly converts to product 4 [Pd(C10N2H8)(SCNPh)(SCNHPh)(m-C2B10H9)] via mono B-H bond activation, and then a second B-H activation leads to 5 [Pd-2(C10N2H8)(2)(SCNPh)(2)(m-C2B10H8)]. The obtained organometallic palladium pincer complex shows acid-base responsive behaviour, namely reversible structural transformation between the mononuclear pincer complex and a trimetallic Pd/S metallacycle. This work provides a potential strategy for exploring the mechanisms of B-H bond activation.

Abstract:Significant progress in the synthesis of substituted icosahedral boron clusters by transition metal catalysis has been made in the past years. This development has enabled the exploration of an increasing number of applications, along with a deepened understanding of the organometallic chemistry of polyhedral boranes. Direct conversion of B-H bonds to functionalized boron vertices is an attractive strategy to synthesize cage compounds with desired properties. In this chapter, the derivatization of the anionic boron clusters [B12H12](2-) and [CB11H12](-) by controlled B-H activation is presented.

Abstract:The selective and straightforward functionalization of B-H bonds in carboranes, producing new C-B bonds or metallacarboranes, has drawn increasing interest in the field of carborane chemistry. Most of the work in this area has been performed using naked transition metal species as catalysts and half sandwich metal fragments as building blocks for constructing frameworks. The focus of this review is on recent developments in the area of B-H activation in carboranes, giving rise to C-B coupling, transformation of 16e(-) systems into stable 18e(-) systems, the formation of metal-metal bonds, and the assembly of organometallic frameworks. The two main approaches are toward the functionalization of B-H bonds for forming B-X (X = C, O, I) bonds and assembling organometallic frameworks based on half sandwich metal fragments. Abstract:A series of cage penta-arylated carboranes have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed intermolecular coupling of the C-carboxylic acid of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion [CB11H12](-) with iodoarenes by direct cage B-H bond functionalization. These transformations set a record in terms of one-pot directing group-mediated activation of inert bonds in a single molecule. The methodology is characterized by high yields, good functional group tolerance, and complete cage regioselectivity. The directing group COOH can be easily removed during or after the intermolecular coupling reaction. The mechanistic pathways were probed using density functional theory calculations. A Pd(II)-Pd(IV)-Pd(II) catalytic cycle is proposed, in which initial coupling is followed by preferred B-H activation of the adjacent boron vertex, and continuation of this selectivity results in a continuous walking process of the palladium center. The methodology opens a new avenue toward building blocks with 5-fold symmetry.

Abstract:The controllable B–H bond activation of carboranes has long been a compelling challenge. However, as the symmetry of para-carborane places the same charge on all of its ten boron atoms, controlling the regiochemistry of B–H bond activation in these molecules has remained out of reach ever since their discovery. Herein, we describe how to use steric effects to achieve a regioselective process for B–H activation of para-carborane. In this strategy, B(2,8)–H or B(2,7)–H activation patterns were achieved by taking advantage of the π–π interactions between pyridine ligands. Interestingly, by employing host–guest interactions in metallacage compounds, B(2,8)–H bond activation could be avoided and exclusive B(2,9)–H bond activation can be achieved. Steric hindrance was also found to be beneficial for regioselective B(2,8)–H bond activation in metallacage species. Abstract:The regioselective derivatization of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion via catalytic B-H bond activation is reported. Amide directing groups in combination with rhodium and iridium catalysts allowed for the direct functionalization of cage boron vertices. Products comprising B-C, B-N and B-Cl bonds were synthesized. As a key intermediate of the B-H activation step, an iridium complex with a direct B-Ir interaction was isolated and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:The closo-dodecaborate dianion is a fundamental icosahedral boron cage with 12 identical B-H vertices. The chemistry and applications of boron clusters have inspired researchers ever since their discovery several decades ago, and the selective modification of the cage positions has remained a major synthetic challenge. A rhodium(III)-catalyzed B-H functionalization-cyclization cascade of closo-dodecaborate amides is reported. The transformations occur chemoselectively at B-H positions in the presence of C-H bonds prone to competitive cyclometalation. Previously inaccessible cage derivatives with B-C(sp(2)) and B-C(sp(3)) bonds as well as a fused diboraoxazole ring are obtained in a one-pot process. The reactions proceed under mild conditions and exhibit complete cage regioselectivity with broad functional group tolerance. These cluster derivatives enable a largely extended investigation of the application of anionic boron clusters in research areas such as photoluminescent materials and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:High-valent transition metal or main group complex mediated σ-bond metathesis plays an important role in the activation of covalent H–E bonds. However, its involvement in the activation of C–C bonds has remained elusive. Here we describe direct hydroboration of the C–C bonds of cyclopropanes by a hydroborenium complex. Our mechanism study suggests this reaction operates through a σ-bond metathesis pathway. With this hydroborenium complex as a catalyst, hydrogenolysis of unfunctionalized cyclopropanes was achieved, which is unprecedented for homogeneous catalysts and provides an unconventional approach for C–C bond functionalization in the absence of metals.

Abstract:The development of new synthetic methods for B-H bond activation has been an important research area in boron cluster chemistry, which may provide opportunities to broaden the application scope of boron clusters. Herein, we present a new reaction strategy for the direct site-selective B-H functionalization of nido-carboranes initiated by photoinduced cage activation via a noncovalent cage···π interaction. As a result, the nido-carborane cage radical is generated through a single electron transfer from the 3D nido-carborane cage to a 2D photocatalyst upon irradiation with green light. The resulting transient nido-carborane cage radical could be directly probed by an advanced time-resolved EPR technique. In air, the subsequent transformations of the active nido-carborane cage radical have led to efficient and selective B-N, B-S, and B-Se couplings in the presence of N-heterocycles, imines, thioethers, thioamides, and selenium ethers. This protocol also facilitates both the late-stage modification of drugs and the synthesis of nido-carborane-based drug candidates for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).

Abstract:Regioselective, five-fold B-H activation of the monocarborane cluster [CBH] at the positions B7-11 has been accomplished. Selective substitution of these positions by B-H activation has not been reported before. Our protocol involves directing group assistance by the carboxylic acid functionality and is based on palladium catalysis using iodoarene coupling partners. Penta-arylated products are obtained in a single step with yields ranging from 42% to 89% and with good functional group tolerance. X-Ray crystal structures for five new compounds confirm the selective substitution of the lower belt of the monocarborane cage.

Abstract:We report the one-pot reactions of the 16e(-) half-sandwich complex CpCoS(2)C(2)B(10)H(10) (1), methyl propiolate, and 3e(-)-donor ligands, which lead to selective B-functionalization at carborane with cyclopentadienyl as a functional group at ambient temperature in good yields. Metal-promoted activations of both a B-H bond of the carborane and a C-H bond of the Cp unit take place sequentially in the cooperation of organic ligands. The reaction requires a 3e(-)-donor ligand and an activated alkyne and is therefore suitable for a broad range of substrates. This investigation provides a simple and efficient synthetic route to B-functionalized carborane derivatives.

Abstract:closo-Boranes and closo-carboranes, clusters with a closed-cage structure, exhibit remarkable inertness and are unique components of products with applications in areas such as medicinal chemistry, fluorescence and materials science. Herein, we report the first transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of the mono-closo-decaborate cluster [1-CB9H10]- by regioselective B-H activation. Using terminal alkenes bearing a wide range of functional groups, dehydrogenative coupling under mild conditions leads to B2/3-dialkenylated products, as verified by X-ray crystallography and NMR studies. This substitution pattern has not been accessible by other methods and enables the straightforward synthesis of new derivatives of the {CB9} cluster.

Abstract:Main observation and conclusion We report herein a practical approach for regio‐selective B—H/C—H bond activation at azo‐substituted carboranes. The reaction proceeded through Iridium(III)‐induced selective B—H/C—H bond activations based on an azo directing group. Through this strategy, a series of mononuclear, trinuclear and tetranuclear cyclometalated iridium complexes containing Cp*Ir—B or Cp*Ir—C bonds were successfully isolated in a high yield. In this work, efficient routes are developed through one‐pot reactions to prepare polynuclear organometallic complexes.
