Abstract:In this article, we introduce a class of generalized matrix algebras, in which each algebra is called a normally upper triangular gm algebra, and characterise Gorenstein projective modules over this class of algebras. Moreover, a sufficient condition of strongly Gorenstein projective modules over normally upper triangular gm algebras is given. The importance of normally upper triangular gm algebras for us is that it includes the so-called path algebras of quivers over algebras and generalized path algebras. Due to this, we characterize Gorenstein projective modules and strongly Gorenstein projective modules over path algebras of quivers over algebras and generalized path algebras as applications of the main results on normally upper triangular gm algebras. At last, we give an example to show how all indecomposable Gorenstein projective modules over a given algebra are constructed by the result on generalized path algebras.
On Universal Sums of Polygonal Numbers

Abstract:For m = 3, 4, …, the polygonal numbers of order m are given by p m (n) = (m − 2)( 2 n ) + n (n = 0, 1, 2, …). For positive integers a, b, c and i, j, k ⩾ 3 with max{i, j, k} ⩾ 5, we call the triple (ap i , bp j , cp k ) universal if for any n = 0, 1, 2, …, there are nonnegative integers x, y, z such that n = ap i (x) + bp j (y) + cp k (z). We show that there are only 95 candidates for universal triples (two of which are (p 4, p 5, p 6) and (p 3, p 4, p 27)), and conjecture that they are indeed universal triples. For many triples (ap i , bp j , cp k ) (including (p 3, 4p 4, p 5), (p 4, p 5, p 6) and (p 4, p 4, p 5)), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be written in the form ap i (x) + bp j (y) + cp k (z) with x, y, z ∈ ℤ. We also show some related new results on ternary quadratic forms, one of which states that any nonnegative integer n ≡ 1 (mod 6) can be written in the form x 2 + 3y 2 + 24z 2 with x, y, z ∈ ℤ. In addition, we pose several related conjectures one of which states that for any m = 3, 4, … each natural number can be expressed as p m+1(x 1) + p m+2(x 2) + p m+3(x 3) + r with x 1, x 2, x 3 ∈ {0, 1, 2, …} and r ∈ {0, …, m − 3}.
On some universal sums of generalized polygonal numbers

Abstract:For $m=3,4,\ldots$ those $p_m(x)=(m-2)x(x-1)/2+x$ with $x\in\mathbb Z$ are called generalized $m$-gonal numbers. Sun [13] studied for what values of positive integers $a,b,c$ the sum $ap_5+bp_5+cp_5$ is universal over $\mathbb Z$ (i.e., any $n\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ has the form $ap_5(x)+bp_5(y)+cp_5(z)$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$). We prove that $p_5+bp_5+3p_5\,(b=1,2,3,4,9)$ and $p_5+2p_5+6p_5$ are universal over $\mathbb Z$, as conjectured by Sun. Sun also conjectured that any $n\in\mathbb N$ can be written as $p_3(x)+p_5(y)+p_{11}(z)$ and $3p_3(x)+p_5(y)+p_7(z)$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb N$; in contrast, we show that $p_3+p_5+p_{11}$ and $3p_3+p_5+p_7$ are universal over $\mathbb Z$. Our proofs are essentially elementary and hence suitable for general readers.

Unipotent representations of real classical groups

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.
Representation of Integers by Positive Ternary Quadratic Forms

Abstract:Let m be a positive integer satisfying m equivalent to 1 (mod 4) and (m/7) = 1. Then there exist integers x, y, epsilon Z such that m = x(2) + 7y(2) + 49z(2). Recent work of J. Coates, Y. Li, Y. Tian and S. Zhai ([1]) shows that this conclusion is useful in the study of the arithmetic of elliptic curves. The above m can be represented also by either x2 + 14y2 + 28z2 + 14yz or 2x(2) + 4y(2) + 49z(2) + 2xy. Moreover, if m = 1 (mod 8) and (m/7) = 1, then m can be represented by x(2) + 14y(2) + 28z(2) + 14yz. The same is true for 2x(2) + 4y(2) + 49z(2) + 2xy, provided that m is not square. If we assume further that m = 1 (mod 4) with (m/7) = 1 is not square, then m can be represented by 8x(2) + 8y(2) + 9z(2) + 8yz + 8xz + 2xy and 2x(2) + 7y(2) + 25z(2) + 2xz. Note that the genus of x(2) + 7y(2) + 49z(2) consists of exactly the above appeared five ternary quadratic forms.
On some m-symmetric generalized hypergeometric d-orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:In [9] I. Lamiri and M. Ouni state some characterization theorems for d-orthogonal polynomials of Hermite, Gould-Hopper and Charlier type polynomials. In [3] Y. Ben Cheikh I. Lamiri and M.Ouni give a characterization theorem for some classes of generalized hypergeometric polynomials containing for example, Gegenbauer polynomials, Gould-Hopper polynomials, Humbert polynomials, a generalization of Laguerre polynomials and a generalization of Charlier polynomials. In this work, we introduce a new class D of generalized hypergeometric m-symmetric polynomial sequence containing the Hermite polynomial sequence and Laguerre polynomial sequence. Then we consider a characterization problem consisting in finding the d-orthogonal polynomial sequences in the class D, m ? d. The solution provides new d-orthogonal polynomial sequences to be classified in d-Askey-scheme and also having a m-symmetry property with m ? d. This class contains the Gould-Hopper polynomial sequence, the class considered by Ben Cheikh-Douak, the class considered in [3]. This class contains new d-orthogonal polynomial sequences not belonging to the classA. We derive also in this work the d-dimensional functional vectors ensuring the d-orthogonality of these polynomials. We also give an explicit expression of the d-dimensional functional vector.

Coprime-Universal Quadratic Forms

Abstract:Given a prime $p>3$, we characterize positive-definite integral quadratic forms that are coprime-universal for $p$, i.e. representing all positive integers coprime to $p$. This generalizes the $290$-Theorem by Bhargava and Hanke and extends later works by Rouse ($p=2$) and De Benedetto and Rouse ($p=3$). When $p=5,23,29,31$, our results are conditional on the coprime-universality of specific ternary forms. We prove this assumption under GRH (for Dirichlet and modular $L$-functions), following a strategy introduced by Ono and Soundararajan, together with some more elementary techniques borrowed from Kaplansky and Bhargava. Finally, we discuss briefly the problem of representing all integers in an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:For a positive integer $m$, a (positive definite integral) quadratic form is called primitively $m$-universal if it primitively represents all quadratic forms of rank $m$. It was proved in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2202.13573" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.13573">arXiv:2202.13573</a> that there are exactly $107$ equivalence classes of primitively $1$-universal quaternary quadratic forms. In this article, we prove that the minimal rank of primitively $2$-universal quadratic forms is six, and there are exactly $201$ equivalence classes of primitively $2$-universal senary quadratic forms.

Abstract:Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.

On n-universal quadratic forms over dyadic local fields

Abstract:Let n ⩾ 2 be an integer. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an integral quadratic form over dyadic local fields to be n -universal by using invariants from Beli's theory of bases of norm generators. Also, we provide a minimal set for testing n -universal quadratic forms over dyadic local fields, as an analogue of Bhargava and Hanke's 290-theorem (or Conway and Schneeberger's 15-theorem) on universal quadratic forms with integer coefficients.

A Unified Approach to Unimodality of Gaussian Polynomials

Abstract:In 2013, Pak and Panova proved the strict unimodality property of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{\ell+m}{m}_q$ (as polynomials in $q$) based on the combinatorics of Young tableaux and the semigroup property of Kronecker coefficients. They showed it to be true for all $\ell,m\geq 8$ and a few other cases. We propose a different approach to this problem based on computer algebra, where we establish a closed form for the coefficients of these polynomials and then use cylindrical algebraic decomposition to identify exactly the range of coefficients where strict unimodality holds. This strategy allows us to tackle generalizations of the problem, e.g., to show unimodality with larger gaps or unimodality of related sequences. In particular, we present proofs of two additional cases of a conjecture by Stanley and Zanello.

Abstract:In analogy with the 290-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke, a criterion set is a finite subset $C$ of the totally positive integers in a given totally real number field such that if a quadratic form represents all elements of $C$, then it necessarily represents all totally positive integers, i.e., is universal. We use a novel characterization of minimal criterion sets to show that they always exist and are unique, and that they must contain certain explicit elements. We also extend the uniqueness result to the more general setting of representations of a given subset of the integers.

Abstract:Let $S \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be finite. Is there a positive definite quadratic form that fails to represent only those elements in $S$? For $S = \emptyset$, this was solved (for classically integral forms) by the $15$-Theorem of Conway-Schneeberger in the early 1990s and (for all integral forms) by the $290$-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke in the mid-2000s. In 1938 Halmos attempted to list all weighted sums of four squares that failed to represent $S=\{m\}$; of his $88$ candidates, he could provide complete justifications for all but one. In the same spirit, we ask, "for which $S = \{m, n\}$ does there exist a quadratic form excepting only the elements of $S$?" Extending the techniques of Bhargava and Hanke, we answer this question for quaternary forms. In the process, we prove what Halmos could not; namely, that $x^2+2y^2+7z^2+13w^2$ represents all positive integers except $5$. We develop new strategies to handle forms of higher dimensions, yielding an enumeration of and proofs for the $73$ possible pairs that a classically integral positive definite quadratic form may except.

Abstract:For an integer M ≥ 2 and a finite group G , an element α ∈ G is called an M -th power if it satisfies A M = α for some A ∈ G . In this article, we will deal with the case when G is a finite symplectic or orthogonal group over a field of odd order q . We introduce the notion of M *-power SRIM polynomials. This, amalgamated with the concept of M -power polynomial, we provide the complete classification of the conjugacy classes of regular semisimple, semisimple, cyclic and regular elements in G , which are M -th powers, when ( M , q ) = 1. The approach here is of generating functions, as worked on by Jason Fulman, Peter M. Neumann, and Cheryl Praeger in the memoir "A generating function approach to the enumeration of matrices in classical groups over finite fields". As a byproduct, we obtain the corresponding probabilities, in terms of generating functions.

Universality theorems for zeros of random real polynomials with fixed coefficients

Abstract:Consider a monic polynomial of degree $n$ whose subleading coefficients are independent, identically distributed, nondegenerate random variables having zero mean, unit variance, and finite moments of all orders, and let $m \geq 0$ be a fixed integer. We prove that such a random monic polynomial has exactly $m$ real zeros with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$ as $n\to \infty$ through integers of the same parity as $m$. More generally, we determine conditions under which a similar asymptotic formula describes the corresponding probability for families of random real polynomials with multiple fixed coefficients. Our work extends well-known universality results of Dembo, Poonen, Shao, and Zeitouni, who considered the family of real polynomials with all coefficients random. As a number-theoretic consequence of these results, we deduce that an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of degree $n$ has exactly $m$ real Galois conjugates with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$, when such $\alpha$ are ordered by the heights of their minimal polynomials.

Abstract:J.P. Serre showed that for any integer $m,~a(n)\equiv 0 \pmod m$ for almost all $n,$ where $a(n)$ is the $n^{\text{th}}$ Fourier coefficient of any modular form with rational coefficients. In this article, we consider a certain class of cuspforms and study $\#\{a(n) \pmod m\}_{n\leq x}$ over the set of integers with $O(1)$ many prime factors. Moreover, we show that any residue class $a\in \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ can be written as the sum of at most thirteen Fourier coefficients, which are polynomially bounded as a function of $m.$
