Abstract:Atomically-dispersed FeN4 moieties are emerging as low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which can be applied in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Whereas, the unsatisfactory position of the d -band center from the metal sites offered by FeN4 affects the adsorption-desorption behaviors of oxygenated intermediates, further impeding the improvement of their ORR performances. Herein, we report a well-designed diatomic Fe/Zn-CNHC catalyst on a microporous hollow support. This strategy drives the position of the d-band center of Fe upward, thus making FeN4 active sites more favorable and stable during the ORR kinetic processes. The material exhibits an excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.91 V and excellent stability (insignificant attenuation after 5,000 cycles), surpassing commercial Pt/C and many other single-atom catalysts. DFT calculations further indicate that the tuning effect of Zn on the d-orbital electron distribution of Fe facilitates the stretching and cleavage of Fe-O, thus accelerating the rate-determining step. This work presents a simple strategy to fabricate well-defined diatomic coordination in single-atom ORR electrocatalysts and inspires future research on developing new syntheses to control the coordination of single-atom electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Regulating the local configuration of atomically dispersed transition-metal atom catalysts is the key to oxygen electrocatalysis performance enhancement. Unlike the previously reported single-atom or dual-atom configurations, we designed a new type of binary-atom catalyst, through engineering Fe-N 4 electronic structure with adjacent Co-N 2 C 2 and nitrogen-coordinated Co nanoclusters, as oxygen electrocatalysts. The resultant optimized electronic structure of the Fe-N 4 active center favors the binding capability of intermediates and enhances oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in both alkaline and acid conditions. In addition, anchoring M–N–C atomic sites on highly graphitized carbon supports guarantees of efficient charge- and mass-transports, and escorts the high bifunctional catalytic activity of the entire catalyst. Further, through the combination of electrochemical studies and in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses, the ORR degradation mechanisms under highly oxidative conditions during oxygen evolution reaction processes were revealed. This work developed a new binary-atom catalyst and systematically investigates the effect of highly oxidative environments on ORR electrochemical behavior. It demonstrates the strategy for facilitating oxygen electrocatalytic activity and stability of the atomically dispersed M–N–C catalysts.

Asymmetric Coordination Regulating D‐orbital Spin‐electron Filling in Single‐atom Iron Catalyst for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:The single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst has shown great promise for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the intrinsic activity is not satisfactory. There is a pressing need to gain a deeper understanding of the charge configuration of the Fe-N-C catalyst and to develop rational modulation strategies. Herein, we have prepared a single-atom Fe catalyst with the co-coordination of N and O (denoted as Fe-N/O-C) and adjacent defect, proposing a strategy to optimize the d-orbital spin-electron filling of Fe sites by fine-tuning the first coordination shell. The Fe-N/O-C exhibits significantly better ORR activity compared to its Fe-N-C counterpart and commercial Pt/C, with a much more positive half-wave potential (0.927 V) and higher kinetic current density. Moreover, using the Fe-N/O-C catalyst, the Zn-air battery and proton exchange membrane fuel cell achieve peak power densities of up to 490 and 1179 mW cm-2, respectively. Theoretical studies and in situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy reveal that Fe-N/O-C undergoes charge redistribution and negative shifting of the d-band center compared to Fe-N-C, thus optimizing the adsorption free energy of ORR intermediates. This work demonstrates the feasibility of introducing an asymmetric first coordination shell for single-atom catalysts and provides a new optimization direction for their practical application.

Abstract:Optimizing the adsorption energy of intermediates by precisely modulating the coordination structure of single-atom M−Nx−C electrocatalysts for significantly improving the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance still remains a great challenge. In this work, guided by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the axial coordination FeN5 single-atom catalyst was constructed by the way of FeN4 species anchored with the N atom from nitrogen-doped graphene for promoting the ORR catalytic performance. The special coordination structure of FeN5 can significantly optimize the adsorption of reaction intermediate and reduce the overpotential of the ORR process compared to that of the FeN4 planar structure which is commonly used. Hence, the constructed axial coordination FeN5 single-atom catalyst shows extraordinary ORR catalytic performance (Eonset/Ehalf-wave = 0.992/0.916 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), JL = 6.06 mA cm–2 and a 93.9 % current retention after 15 h) and a maximum power density of 141 mW cm–2 in zinc-air battery, which is superior to those of commercial Pt/C. These findings provide new insights into the construction of high-efficiency ORR catalysts from the design of single atom coordination environment.

Abstract:Axial coordination engineering has emerged as an effective strategy to regulate the catalytic performance of metal‒N‒C materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the ORR mechanism and activity changes of their active centers modified by axial ligands are still unclear. Here, a comprehensive investigation of the ORR on a series of FeN4‒L moieties (L stands for an axial ligand) is performed using advanced density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The axial ligand has a substantial effect on the electronic structure and catalytic activity of the FeN4 center. Specially, FeN4‒C6H5 is screened as a promising active moiety with superior ORR activity, as further revealed by constant‐potential calculations and kinetic analysis. The enhanced activity is attributed to the weakened *OH adsorption caused by the altered electronic structure. Moreover, microkinetic modeling shows that at pH = 1, FeN4‒C6H5 possesses an impressive theoretical half‐wave potential of ~1.01 V, superior to the pristine Fe‒N‒C catalysts (~0.88 V) calculated at the same level. These findings advance the understanding of the ORR mechanism of FeN4‒L and provide guidance for optimizing the ORR performance of single‐metal‐atom catalysts.

Abstract:The quest for efficient and durable catalysts using abundant resources has garnered significant interest in the field of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis. In this contribution, we have designed a FeN4 or CoN4 embedded graphene-based bilayer as active layer and TMC3 or TMN3 doped graphene as supporting layer, named as FeN4/TMC3 or FeN4/TMN3 and CoN4/TMC3 or CoN4/TMN3, wherein TM strands for transition metal. Based on density functional theory calculations, our results demonstrate that the interaction formed between dual metal atoms in the bilayer interspace leads to the coordination environment altered from flat four-coordination to spatial five-coordination, further stabilizing the bilayer structure and impairing its affinity toward the O-containing intermediates. According to thermodynamic analysis, the bilayers of CoN4/CoN3, FeN4/FeC3, FeN4/CoC3, FeN4/NiC3, FeN4/ZnC3, FeN4/FeN3, FeN4/CrN3 and FeN4/ZnN3 are attractively promising for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis due to the small overpotential difference Δη between oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution that are less than 1 V. Density functional theory calculations combined with machine learning analysis directly identify the key role played by the inter-binding formed between bilayers, that boosts catalytic activity, which establishes a predictable framework for a fast screen for graphene-based bilayer vertical heterojunction. This work opens up a new path for designing the efficient electrocatalysts via modification of coordination environment.
Regulating the Coordination Geometry and Oxidation State of Single‐Atom Fe Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Abstract:FeNC catalysts with different Fe single‐atom coordination geometries (FeN3, FeN4, or FeN5) are synthesized by pyrolysis of Fe‐polypyrrole precursors. FeN5 sites offer the highest Fe oxidation state (+2.62), strongest Fe–N interaction, lowest energy barrier for OH− desorption, and highest intrinsic activity for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media. FeNC catalysts demonstrate remarkable activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and Zn–air batteries (ZABs). The local coordination of Fe single atoms in FeNC catalysts strongly impacts ORR activity. Herein, FeNC catalysts containing Fe single atoms sites with FeN3, FeN4, and FeN5 coordinations are synthesized by carbonization of Fe‐rich polypyrrole precursors. The FeN5 sites possess a higher Fe oxidation state (+2.62) than the FeN3 (+2.23) and FeN4 (+2.47) sites, and higher ORR activity. Density functional theory calculations verify that the FeN5 coordination optimizes the adsorption and desorption of ORR intermediates, dramatically lowering the energy barrier for OH− desorption in the rate‐limiting ORR step. A primary ZAB constructed using the FeNC catalyst with FeN5 sites demonstrates state‐of‐the‐art performance (an open circuit potential of 1.629 V, power density of 159 mW cm−2). Results confirm an intimate structure‐activity relationship between Fe coordination, Fe oxidation state, and ORR activity in FeNC catalysts.

Abstract:Fe&Mn/N‐C catalyst exhibits better oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity than Fe/N‐C sole‐component catalyst both in alkaline and acidic media. Enhanced density and modulated electronic structure of FeN4 sites are induced by Mn cooperation. The bridged structure of FeN4‐O‐MnN4 configuration is proposed with lower energy barrier in ORR.Single atom sites (SAS) of FeN4 are clarified as one of the most active components for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Effective strategies by engineering the local coordination environment and site density of FeN4 sites are crucial to further enhance the electrocatalytic ORR performance. Herein, the integration of a second metal of Mn with Fe to construct Fe&Mn/N‐C catalysts with enhanced density of FeN4 active sites and modulated electronic structure is reported. The formation of MnN4 centers modulates the local environment of FeN4 sites and reserves more FeN4 embedded in carbon substrate by forming the possible FeN4‐O‐MnN4 configurations. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the overall energy barrier of ORR is decreased over the FeN4‐O‐MnN4 moieties. Therefore, the Fe&Mn/N‐C catalyst exhibits enhanced ORR performance both in alkaline and acidic solution (half‐wave potentials are 0.904 and 0.781 V). This work provides an effective strategy by modulating the local electronic structure and density of FeN4 active sites to improve the ORR activity and stability through Mn cooperation.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts are immensely promising alternatives to noble metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while their activity is bottlenecked by an unsatisfactory electronic structure. Accurately tuning the d-band centers and spin state of Fe sites is significant in enhancing intrinsic ORR activity but remains challenging. Herein, an innovative theoretical model of Fe-N4SP with a highly coordinated structure was rationally designed by decorating Fe-N4 sites with axial sulfur atoms in the first coordination shell and adjacent phosphorus atoms in the second coordination shell. The theoretical calculations and experimental validations confirmed that the proposed structure can break the symmetric structure of Fe-N4 sites to rearrange electrons and intensify spin polarization. The increased coordination number conferred enhanced d-orbital interactions in Fe atoms to depress their d-band centers, weakening the adsorption of oxygen intermediates. Fe-N4SP sites were successfully constructed in N, P, and S ternary co-doped hollow carbon nanocages to validate the proposed theoretical model. The obtained Fe-N4SP/NPS-HC catalysts exhibited impressive ORR activity with a decent half-wave potential of 0.912 V in alkaline media and 0.814 V in acidic media, coupled with ultra-long durability up to 320 h in zinc-air battery systems. Overall, novel insights into the effect of coordination environment on ORR catalytic activity were provided, useful for modulating the electronic structure of catalysts for efficient storage and energy production systems.

Abstract:Iron-nitrogen functionalized graphene has emerged as a promising cathode host for rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries (RLSBs) due to its affordability and enhanced battery performance. To optimize its catalytical efficiency, we propose a novel approach involving coordination engineering. Our investigation spans a plethora of catalysts with varied coordination environments, focusing on elements B, C, N and O. We revealed that Fe-C4 and Fe-B2C2-h are particularly effective for promoting Li2S oxidation, whereas Fe-N4 excels in catalyzing the sulfur reduction reaction (SRR). Importantly, our study identified specific descriptors - namely, the Integrated Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population (ICOHP) and the bond length between Fe and S in Li2S adsorbed state - as the most effective predictive descriptors for Li2S oxidation barriers. Meanwhile, Li2S adsorption energy emerges as a reliable descriptor for assessing the SRR barrier. These identified descriptors are expected to be instrumental in rapidly identifying promising cathode hosts across various metal-centered systems with diverse coordination environments. Our findings not only offer valuable insights into the role of coordination environment, but also present an effective path for rapidly identifying high performance catalysts for RLSBs, enabling the acceleration of advanced RLSBs development.

Abstract:Iron and nitrogen co-doped carbons (Fe–N–C) have comparable activity to Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but with much poorer durability in acidic electrolytes. Recently, regulating the coordination environment of Fe center (in-plane or axially) to boost the ORR activity of Fe–N–C has attracted many interests, and the axial OH ligand is even regarded as a necessary part of a highly-active structure. However, the influence of these regulations on the stability is still not clear. Herein, we performed kinetic and thermodynamic calculations based on density functional theory with explicit consideration of electrode potential to study the OH axial ligand effect on the stability of Fe–N–C electrocatalysts. We found that although the OH ligand can enhance the ORR onset potential to some extent, it substantially increases the H2O2 selectivity, pushing ORR diverted to the 2e- + 2e-pathway. In the latter 2e-process (H2O2 reduction), harmful hydroxyl radicals could be produced upon H2O2 dissociation. Therefore, from the perspective of catalysts’ stability, OH ligand coordination on the metal center is not a good way to develop stable ORR catalysts.

Abstract:Designing highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is extremely important for developing regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have gained considerable attention in recent years because of their maximum atom utilization efficiency and tunable coordination environments. Herein, through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we systematically explored the ORR/OER performances of nitrogen-coordinated transition metal carbon materials (TM-Nx-C (TM = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pd, and Pt; x = 3, 4)) through tailoring the coordination environment. Our results demonstrate that compared to conventional tetra-coordinated (TM-N4-C) catalysts, the asymmetric tri-coordinated (TM-N3-C) catalysts exhibit stronger adsorption capacity of catalytic intermediates. Among them, Ni-N3-C possesses optimal adsorption energy and the lowest overpotential of 0.29 and 0.28 V for ORR and OER, respectively, making it a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst for oxygen catalysis. Furthermore, we find this enhanced effect stems from the additional orbital interaction between newly uncoordinated d-orbitals and p-orbitals of oxygenated species, which is evidently testified via the change of d-band center and integral crystal orbital Hamilton population (ICOHP). This work not only provides a potential bifunctional oxygen catalyst, but also enriches the knowledge of coordination engineering for tailoring the activity of SACs, which may pave the way to design and discover more promising bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen catalysis.

Abstract:Axial coordination is a powerful strategy to effectively regulate the activity of M–N 4 catalysts. However, the underlying mechanism is still not clear. Here, we explore the influence of axial coordination on the activity of Fe/Co/Ni-tetraphenylporphyrin covalent organic frameworks (Fe/Co/Ni-TPP COFs) towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) using the DFT method. It is found that the widely used descriptors ( e.g. , d-band centers) are not applicable to explain the axial coordination effect on metal reactivity. The reason is that the hybridization of the d z 2 orbital of metal centers and p z orbital of axial coordination atoms leads to the formation of new active orbitals, where the effect of the p z orbital should be considered in the design of the activity descriptor. Based on this, an activity descriptor using the total number of electrons in d z 2 and p z orbitals is proposed. The results show that the reactivity of the metal center is enhanced by axial coordination if N (d z 2 ) + N (p z ) > 2, while it is reduced if N (d z 2 ) + N (p z ) ≤ 2. The application of the descriptor is further extended to explain the activity change of Fe/Co/Ni-TPP COFs by different types of axially coordinated atoms. This work provides new insights into the regulation mechanism of the axial coordination effect on metal reactivity.

Understanding the High Activity of Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts in Oxygen Reduction: Fe/Fe3C Nanoparticles Boost the Activity of Fe-N(x).

Abstract:Understanding the origin of high activity of Fe-N-C electrocatalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical but still challenging for developing efficient sustainable nonprecious metal catalysts in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we developed a new highly active Fe-N-C ORR catalyst containing Fe-N(x) coordination sites and Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals (Fe@C-FeNC), and revealed the origin of its activity by intensively investigating the composition and the structure of the catalyst and their correlations with the electrochemical performance. The detailed analyses unambiguously confirmed the coexistence of Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals and Fe-N(x) in the best catalyst. A series of designed experiments disclosed that (1) N-doped carbon substrate, Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals or Fe-N(x) themselves did not deliver the high activity; (2) the catalysts with both Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals and Fe-N(x) exhibited the high activity; (3) the higher content of Fe-N(x) gave the higher activity; (4) the removal of Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals severely degraded the activity; (5) the blocking of Fe-N(x) downgraded the activity and the recovery of the blocked Fe-N(x) recovered the activity. These facts supported that the high ORR activity of the Fe@C-FeNC electrocatalysts should be ascribed to that Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals boost the activity of Fe-N(x). The coexistence of high content of Fe-N(x) and sufficient metallic iron nanoparticles is essential for the high ORR activity. DFT calculation corroborated this conclusion by indicating that the interaction between metallic iron and Fe-N4 coordination structure favored the adsorption of oxygen molecule. These new findings open an avenue for the rational design and bottom-up synthesis of low-cost highly active ORR electrocatalysts.
