Abstract:In this paper we prove the uniqueness of the critical point for stable solutions of the Robin problem \[ \begin{cases} -\Delta u=f(u)&\text{in }\Omega\\ u>0&\text{in }\Omega\\ \partial_\nu u+\beta u=0&\text{on }\partial\Omega, \end{cases} \] where $\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth and bounded domain with strictly positive curvature of the boundary, $f\ge0$ is a smooth function and $\beta>0$. Moreover, for $\beta$ large the result fails as soon as the domain is no more convex, even if it is very close to be: indeed, in this case it is possible to find solutions with an arbitrary large number of critical points.

Abstract:On a convex bounded Euclidean domain, the ground state for the Laplacian with Neumann boundary conditions is a constant, while the Dirichlet ground state is log-concave. The Robin eigenvalue problem can be considered as interpolating between the Dirichlet and Neumann cases, so it seems natural that the Robin ground state should have similar concavity properties. In this paper we show that this is false, by analysing the perturbation problem from the Neumann case. In particular we prove that on polyhedral convex domains, except in very special cases (which we completely classify) the variation of the ground state with respect to the Robin parameter is not a concave function. We conclude from this that the Robin ground stat is not log-concave (and indeed even has some superlevel sets which are non-convex) for small Robin parameter on polyhedral convex domains outside a special class, and hence also on arbitrary convex domains which approximate these in Hausdorff distance.

Abstract:This paper studies the existence and uniqueness of a classical solution to a type of Robin boundary problems on the nonnegative orthant. We propose a new decomposition-homogenization method for the Robin boundary problem based on probabilistic representations, which leads to two auxiliary Robin boundary problems admitting some simplified probabilistic representations. The auxiliary probabilistic representations allow us to establish the existence of a unique classical solution to the original Robin boundary problem using some stochastic flow analysis.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of a boundary value problem for the Laplace equation in a perforated domain in [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], with a (nonlinear) Robin boundary condition on the boundary of the small hole. The problem we wish to consider degenerates in three respects: in the limit case, the Robin boundary condition may degenerate into a Neumann boundary condition, the Robin datum may tend to infinity, and the size ϵ of the small hole where we consider the Robin condition collapses to 0. We study how these three singularities interact and affect the asymptotic behaviour as ϵ tends to 0, and we represent the solution and its energy integral in terms of real analytic maps and known functions of the singular perturbation parameters. Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with homogeneous Robin boundary conditions, when the (positive) Robin parameter is diverging. In this framework, since the convergence of the Robin eigenvalues to the Dirichlet ones is known, we address the question of quantifying the rate of such convergence. More precisely, in this work we identify the proper geometric quantity representing (asymptotically) the first term in the expansion of the eigenvalue variation: it is a novel notion of torsional rigidity. Then, by performing a suitable asymptotic analysis of both such quantity and its minimizer, we prove the first-order expansion of any Robin eigenvalue, in the Dirichlet limit. Moreover, the convergence rate of the corresponding eigenfunctions is obtained as well. We remark that all our spectral estimates are explicit and sharp, and cover both the cases of convergence to simple and multiple Dirichlet eigenvalues.

Abstract:Let $\Omega=\Omega_0\setminus \overline{\Theta}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, where $\Omega_0$ and $\Theta$ are two open, bounded and convex sets such that $\overline{\Theta}\subset \Omega_0$ and let $\beta<0$ be a given parameter. We consider the eigenvalue problem for the Laplace operator associated to $\Omega$, with Robin boundary condition on $\partial \Omega_0$ and Neumann boundary condition on $\partial \Theta$. In [Paoli-Piscitelli-Trani, ESAIM-COCV '20] it is proved that the spherical shell is the only maximizer for the first Robin-Neumann eigenvalue in the class of domains $\Omega$ with fixed outer perimeter and volume. We establish a quantitative version of the afore-mentioned isoperimetric inequality; the main novelty consists in the introduction of a new type of hybrid asymmetry, that turns out to be the suitable one to treat the different conditions on the outer and internal boundary. Up to our knowledge, in this context, this is the first stability result in which both the outer and the inner boundary are perturbed.

Abstract:In this paper, the existence of smooth positive solutions to a Robin boundary-value problem with non-homogeneous differential operator and reaction given by a nonlinear convection term plus a singular one is established. Proofs chiefly exploit sub-super-solution and truncation techniques, set-valued analysis, recursive methods, nonlinear regularity theory, as well as fixed point arguments. A uniqueness result is also presented.

Abstract:We show that the spectrum of a Schrödinger eigenvalue problem posed on a closed Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-negative potential can be approached by that of Robin eigenvalue problems with constant positive boundary parameter posed on a sequence of domains in $M$. We construct these Robin problems by means of a homogenisation procedure. We show a similar result for compact manifolds with non-empty boundary and sign-indefinite potential; in this case the Robin boundary parameter can be taken to be constant on each boundary component and to have constant magnitude. As an application, we prove a flexibility result for optimal Schrödinger potentials: for certain problems where it is known that there exists some potential $V$ which extremises some Schrödinger eigenvalue, we show that this extremal eigenvalue is also approached by the corresponding eigenvalues for a sequence of smooth potentials which remain bounded away from $V$ in some dual Sobolev space.

Abstract:We show, that under natural assumptions, solutions of Dirichlet problems for uniformly elliptic divergence form operator can be approximated pointwise by solutions of some versions of Robin problems. The proof is based on stochastic representation of solutions and properties of reflected diffusions corresponding to divergence form operators.

The presence of such a function $b$ in the principal part of the operator prevents it from being uniformly elliptic when $u$ is large.

Abstract:We consider the Laplacian eigenvalues for smooth planar domains with strongly attractive Robin conditions imposed on a part of the boundary and Neumann condition on the remaining boundary. The asymptotics of individual eigenvalues is described in terms of an effective operator on an interval with boundary conditions at the endpoints. For several typical geometries a more precise asymptotics in terms of the boundary curvature is obtained.

Abstract:A theoretical analysis of the finite element method for a generalized Robin boundary value problem, which involves a second-order differential operator on the boundary, is presented. If $\Omega$ is a general smooth domain with a curved boundary, we need to introduce an approximate domain $\Omega_h$ and to address issues owing to the domain perturbation $\Omega \neq \Omega_h$. In contrast to the transformation approach used in existing studies, we employ the extension approach, which is easier to handle in practical computation, in order to construct a numerical scheme. Assuming that approximate domains and function spaces are given by isoparametric finite elements of order $k$, we prove the optimal rate of convergence in the $H^1$- and $L^2$-norms. A numerical example is given for the piecewise linear case $k = 1$.

Abstract:In this paper we address the uniqueness issue in the classical Robin inverse problem on a Lipschitz domain Ω⊂Rn, with L∞ Robin coefficient, L2 Neumann data and conductivity of class W1,r(Ω), r>n. We show that uniqueness of the Robin coefficient on a subpart of the boundary, given Cauchy data on the complementary part, does hold in dimension n=2 but needs not hold in higher dimension. We also raise on open issue on harmonic gradients which is of interest in this context.

Abstract:Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\ge 2$ be a bounded Lipschitz domain with outer unit normal $\nu$. For $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ let $R_\Omega^\alpha$ be the Laplacian in $\Omega$ with the Robin boundary condition $\partial_\nu u+\alpha u=0$, and denote by $E(R^\alpha_\Omega)$ its principal eigenvalue. In 2017 Bucur, Freitas and Kennedy stated the following open question: Does the limit of the ratio $E(R_\Omega^\alpha)/ \alpha^2$ for $\alpha\to-\infty$ always exist? We give a negative answer.

Abstract:We prove an improved Pleijel nodal domain theorem for the Robin eigenvalue problem. In particular, we remove the restriction, imposed in previous work, that the Robin parameter be non‐negative. We also improve the upper bound in the statement of the Pleijel theorem. In the particular example of a Euclidean ball, we calculate the explicit value of the Pleijel constant for a generic constant Robin parameter, and we show that it is equal to the Pleijel constant for the Dirichlet Laplacian on a Euclidean ball.

Abstract:We prove a Faber-Krahn inequality for the Laplacian with drift under Robin boundary condition, provided that the $\beta$ parameter in the Robin condition is large enough. The proof relies on a compactness argument, on the convergence of Robin eigenvalues to Dirichlet eigenvalues when $\beta$ goes to infinity, and on a strict Faber-Krahn inequality under Dirichlet boundary condition. We also show the existence and uniqueness of drifts $v$ satisfying some $L^\infty$ constraints and minimizing or maximizing the principal eigenvalue of $-\Delta+v\cdot\nabla$ in a fixed domain and with a fixed parameter $\beta>0$ in the Robin condition.
