Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a facile, straightforward and green method for synthesis of highly red-emitting fluorescent bimetallic Au/Ag nanoclusters (NCs) employing lipoic acid as both a reducing agent and a protecting agent. The as-prepared Au/Ag NCs exhibited bright red emission with a strong peak centered at 630 nm (quantum yield measured as 6.4%), and showed excellent stability and remarkable temperature-dependent fluorescent property. The fluorescence responses were reversible and linear to the environment temperature from 20 to 65 C with a resolution as high as 1.34 degrees C, which allows its potential application as a fluorescent nanothermometer. Moreover, Au/Ag NCs were also explored for selective and sensitive determination of Fe3+ based on the specific quenching of the fluorescence by Fe3+, and explored for fluorescence imaging Fe3+ in living HeLa cells thanks to their very low cytotoxicity. Abstract:Herein, we report a dia-type metal–organic hybrid network based on the [Ag4Br6] clusters and hexamethylenetetramine molecules wherein both the inorganic nodes and organic linkers feature adamantane-like geometry with a Td symmetry. The silver bromine complex presents a dual emission and exhibits an interesting luminescent thermochromism behavior. Remarkably, white-light emission can be readily realized through variation of the temperature. Abstract:Four novel luminescent materials, namely, [Ag-3(3,2',3'-dpob)(bpy)](n) (1.Ag), [Ag(3,3',4'-H(2)dpob)(bpy)](n) (2.Ag), [Ag-3(3,2',3'-Hdpob)(3,2',3'-H(2)dpob)(bib)(3)center dot 2H(2)O](n) (3.Ag), and [Cu(3,2', 3'-Hdpob)(bib)center dot 2H(2)O](n) (4.Cu) [3,2',3'-H(3)dpob = 3-(2',3'-dicarboxylphenoxy) benzonic acid; 3,3',4'-H(3)dpob = 3-(3',4'-dicarboxylphenoxy) benzonic acid; bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine; bib = 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene] have been hydrothermally synthesized by mixed ligands and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR), elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The crystal structures of four compounds indicate that the hydrogen bonding (O-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi) and pi center dot center dot center dot pi p stacking interactions play critical roles in the formation of the extended supramolecular array. 1.Ag displays a rare 3D compact structure with a 1D right-handed helical chain [-Ag1-CO2-Ag3-CO2-Ag1-]. 2.Ag and 3.Ag exhibit a 3D supramolecular architecture linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds based on a 1D double-chain and 1D triple-chain, respectively. 4.Cu shows a 1D + 1D -> 2D sheet, which is propagated to form an extended 3D structure with pcu (primitive cubic) topology via pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking. The four compounds display remarkable narrow band emission with smaller full width at half-maximum (FWHM) (77 K, 97.91, 92.27, 72.98 and 77.96 nm; 298 K, 169.41, 241.98, 293.66 and 148.50 nm) in the solid state. The combination of such narrow FWHM and the red-shift from 298 K to 77 K endow them with a prominent thermochromic effect. It is worth noting that 2.Ag and 3.Ag display good aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Both of them show very weak luminescence in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, good solvent) while their intensities increased enormously with the addition of water (H2O, poor solvent) due to aggregation. In addition, adsorption spectra reveal their semiconductive nature (2.35 eV for 1.Ag and 2.91 eV for 3.Ag) and the role of Ag center dot center dot center dot Ag interactions in controlling the performance of semiconductive properties is highlighted.

Abstract:At room temperature (RT), the weak and strong cluster-centered luminescence of silver and copper iodide clusters, respectively, has been widely reported. Though the central metal ions show same d10 electrons and similar coordination mode, the mechanism of their distinct emission properties is still unclear, which restricts further applications. In this work, it is found that different photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) are caused by various collision energy transfers between the metal ions in clusters, like a kind of aggregation-caused quenching mechanism. Concretely, isostructural coordination polymers (CPs) of Ag(I) and Cu(I) iodide clusters are synthesized. The Ag(I)-CP shows no luminescence at RT while the PLQY of Cu(I)-CP boosts to 89%, in which short radius and weak collision between metal ions are found. Moreover, shorter Cu(I)-Cu(I) and longer Ag(I)-Ag(I) distances are realized in the similar structure and they display prospective luminescence, which proves the collisional quenching mechanism. Inspired of the above, the heterometallic materials with high sensitivities and wide sensing windows to temperature detection are obtained through tuning the metal content, and they are also fabricated into detecting sequences, which satisfies the wide-range temperature sensing. This work proposes an efficient strategy to improve RT photoluminescence and broaden temperature sensing windows.

Abstract:Supramolecular assembly is regarded as an effective strategy to endow metal clusters with rich and unique photophysical properties. However, the detailed mechanisms and influential factors for intercluster assemblies and their effects on luminescent properties remain unclear to date. In this work, we constructed a series of spirocyclic nonanuclear silver cluster compounds with varying alkyl chain lengths, which demonstrated distinct supramolecular assembly behaviors depending on temperature, concentration, and solvent polarity. We observed significant changes in the morphology of their assemblies from irregular particles to nanofibers during the aggregation process. The assembly of spirocyclic silver clusters not only generated emission enhancement but also gave rise to intriguing alkyl length-related mechano- and vapochromic luminescent properties. X-ray crystallographic analysis illustrated that the alkyl chain-dependent intramolecular and intermolecular pi-pi stacking, together with hydrophobic interactions, accounted for the distinguished assembly and optical properties. This study offers insight into the objective law of cluster assemblies and provides a viable avenue for the development of novel cluster-based stimuli-responsive materials. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Silver(i) chalcogenide/chalcogenolate clusters are promising photofunctional materials for sensing, optoelectronics and solar energy harvesting applications. However, their instability and poor room-temperature luminescent quantum yields have hampered more extensive study. Here, we graft such clusters to adaptable bridging ligands, enabling their interconnection and the formation of rigid metal–organic frameworks. By controlling the spatial separation and orientation of the clusters, they then exhibit enhanced stability (over one year) and quantum yield (12.1%). Ultrafast dual-function fluorescence switching (<1 s) is also achieved, with turn-off triggered by O2 and multicoloured turn-on by volatile organic compounds. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of the inclusion materials, obtained by single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation, enables precise determination of the position of the small molecules within the framework, elucidating the switching mechanism. The work enriches the cluster-based metal–organic framework portfolio, bridges the gap between silver chalcogenide/chalcogenolate clusters and metal–organic frameworks, and provides a foundation for further development of functional silver-cluster-based materials.

Abstract:Two structurally new Lindqvist hexaniobate-templated silver thiolate clusters, [Nb6O19@Ag45(iPrS)23(CH3COO)14] (Ag45) and (H3O)4[Nb6O19@Ag41KS2.5O2(H2O)7.5(iPrS)24(CH3COO)5] (Ag41), were synthesized using a facile one-pot solvothermal approach. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the presence of a classical Lindqvist-type [Nb6O19]8- anion template, with iPrS- and CH3COO- surface-protecting ligands in both silver clusters, which can further form two-dimensional Ag45 assembly and one-dimensional Ag41 chain packing structures. Both Ag45 and Ag41 clusters exhibited intriguing photothermal conversion properties and temperature-dependent emission behavior. Two structurally new hexaniobate-templated silver thiolate clusters are prepared using a solvothermal approach, which can form a 2D Ag45 and 1D Ag41 packing structures with intriguing photothermal conversion and temperature-dependent emission properties.

Abstract:The exploration of structural interconversion in clusters triggered by external stimuli has attracted significant interest due to its potential to elucidate structure-property relationships of metal clusters. In this study, two types of silver clusters, Ag2 and Ag6, are synthesized. Interestingly, the clusters exhibit reversible transformations in response to changes in the solvent conditions. The structures and optical properties of these clusters are thoroughly characterized using techniques such as mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and radioluminescence spectroscopy. While both Ag2 and Ag6 display excellent photoluminescence properties, Ag2 demonstrates superior performance in X-ray radioluminescence compared to Ag6. Flexible scintillator films fabricated from Ag2 clusters exhibit outstanding X-ray imaging capabilities, achieving a spatial resolution of 15.0 lp/mm and an impressive detection limit for an X-ray dose of 0.58 μGy s-1. This detection limit is nearly 10 times lower than the typical dose rate used in X-ray diagnostics (5.5 μGy s-1). This work introduces a novel approach for designing thiol-free silver clusters capable of solvent-dependent reversible interconversion, offering new insights into the development of silver clusters for advanced X-ray imaging applications.
Chiral Lanthanide-Silver(I) Cluster-based Metal-Organic Frameworks Exhibiting Solvent Stability, and Tunable Photoluminescence

Abstract:Due to the lack of effective synthetic strategies, the preparation of chemically stable chiral Ag(I) cluster-based assembly materials remains challenging. Here, we have developed an approach to synthesize three pairs of chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) named L-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-L, Eu for 2-L, Tb for 3-L) and D-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-D, Eu for 2-D, Tb for 3-D) by employing a chiral Ag(I) cluster ({Ag5S6}) as node and Ln3+ ion as inorganic linker. Structural analysis revealed that the chiral ligands induced chirality through the entire structure, resulting in a chiral helix arrangement of the C3-symmetric chiral {Ag5S6} nodes and Ln3+ ions. These compounds showed high solvent stability in various polar organic solvents. The solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of compounds L-LnAg5-3D and D-LnAg5-3D exhibited obvious mirror symmetrical peaks. The emission spectra in solid state revealed that compound 1-L only exhibited the emission peak of {Ag5S6}, while compounds 2-L and 3-L exhibited overlapping peaks of Ln3+ and {Ag5S6} at different excitation wavelengths. This demonstrates the tunable photoluminescence from {Ag5S6} to Ln3+ by introducing different Ln3+ ions and manipulating the excitation wavelengths. The study underscores the enhanced stability of Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs achieved through the incorporation of Ln3+ ions and establishes chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs as promising candidates for advanced materials with tunable photoluminescence.

Alkynyl-anchored silver nanoclusters in lanthanide metal-organic framework for luminescent thermometer and CO2 cycloaddition

Abstract:In this study, an alkynyl-modified aromatic dicarboxylic acid bifunctional ligand was selected to construct lanthanide compound {[Eu 4 (ebdc) 6 (4,4-bpy) 0.5 (H 2 O) 4.5 ]·(C 2 H 5 OH) 1.25 (H 2 O)} n (Eu-MOF, H 2 ebdc = 5-ethynyl-isophthalic acid, 4,4-bpy = 4,4-bipyridine, and MOF = metal-organic framework), of which the uncoordinated alkynyl group would be used to anchor silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs). The Eu-MOF exhibits double emission peaks, located at 492 and 611 nm, respectively, in which the high-energy blue emission is associated with alkynyl-modified ligand while the low-energy red emission belongs to characteristic emission of Eu 3+ , indicating that ligands can effectively sensitize Eu 3+ luminescence. The intensity ratio of the dual emission fluorescence peaks of Eu-MOF displays a good linear relationship with temperature, which realizes the detection function in the low temperature region of 75–275 K, and the thermal sensitivity reaches 1.5398%·K −1 . After anchoring the Ag NCs, the high-energy blue emission is significantly quenched, indicating that the Ag NCs are indeed confined into the framework and interact with the alkynyl group, and thus change the overall electronic distribution. This is the first case of anchoring Ag NCs by a luminescent Eu-MOF and studying nanocluster loading by using spectroscopic properties. In addition, the Ag NCs@Eu-MOF also shows a good catalytic activity for cycloaddition reaction from CO 2 and epoxides. This study not only provides ideas for exploring the changes in optical properties of luminescent MOFs and Ag NCs caused by confinement effect, but also expands their potential applications in various fields.

Abstract:Engineering the surface of the metal clusters with the core structure maintained and tuning their luminescence in a wide range is still a challenge in the nanomaterial research. We modified six mono‐pyridyl ligands with different electronic effects (conjugation effect or induction effect) on a superatomic silver cluster [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)8] (denoted as Ag 14 ) through in situ site‐specific surface engineering, and obtained the corresponding clusters [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)6(L1/L2)2] (denoted as NC‐1, 2 , L1/L2 = 4‐Acetylpyridine/4‐Carboxypyridine) and [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(L3/L4/L5/L6)8] (denoted as NC‐3, 4, 5, 6 , L3/L4/L5/L6 = 4‐Phenylpyridine/4‐(1‐Naphthyl)pyridine/9‐(4‐pyridine)anthracene/9‐(4‐ pyridine)pyrene). Through the modification of the Ag 14 cluster, a wide‐range luminescence from blue to red was realized. Abstract:Structural modulation of core-shell silver nanoclusters from the inside is a huge challenge but of great importance in their syntheses. Herein, two silver nanoclusters [Ag3 S9 @Ag42 ] (SD/Ag45b) and [Ag9 S9 @Ag42 ] (SD/Ag51a) are isolated in the presence of different kinds of sulfonic acids. Uniquely, SD/Ag45b and SD/Ag51a show typical core-shell structures with the similar Ag42 shell but different cores. The outer shell of 42 silver atoms comprises two Ag3 trigons at two poles encircled by three equatorial distorted square cupolas (J4 , Ag12 ). The core in SD/Ag45b is a silver trigon ligated by nine S2- ions (Ag3 S9 ), while a tricapped triangular prismatic Ag9 also ligated by the same amount of S2- ions (Ag9 S9 ) is observed in the inner core of SD/Ag51a. The electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) indicates that the introduction of p-toluenesulfonic acid can realize the transformation from SD/Ag45b to Ag51 . SD/Ag45b and SD/Ag51a show inverse luminescence thermochromic behaviors in the near-infrared (NIR) region, mainly dictated by the inner silver cores. This work not only realizes the synthesis of new silver nanoclusters by core modulation but also provides a prototype to get molecular-level insight into the correlation between structure and luminescence thermochromism.

Silver(I)-Iodine Cluster with Efficient Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence and Suppressed Concentration Quenching

Abstract:Reports on highly efficient silver(I)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials are scarce due to challenges in molecular design, although these materials show great potential for photoluminescent and electroluminescent applications. Herein, a silver(I)-iodine cluster, namely Ag2I2[dppb-Ac]2, is synthesized by employing a donor-acceptor (D-A) type bisphosphine ligand. Due to the introduction of electron-donating iodine ligands, [dppb-Ac]2Ag2I2 exhibits an emissive singlet state characterized by (metal + iodine)-to-ligand charge transfer and intra-ligand charge transfer transitions, as well as a small singlet-triplet energy gap. Additionally, its non-planar, highly distorted D-A structure efficiently separates adjacent molecules in aggregated state. As a result, Ag2I2[dppb-Ac]2 exhibits efficient TADF and suppressed luminescence concentration quenching in thin films. For instance, the 10 wt%-doped PMMA film and neat film of Ag2I2[dppb-Ac]2 display bright bluish-green and green emissions, peaking at 506 and 532 nm, with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 70% and 52%, and lifetimes of 18.9 and 7.9 μs, respectively. The high PLQYs and efficiently suppressed emission concentration quenching of Ag2I2[dppb-Ac]2 in films are outstanding among reported Ag(I)-based TADF emitters.

Three Silver(I) Coordination Polymers Based on Pyridyl Ligands and Auxiliary Carboxylic Ligands: Luminescence and Efficient Sensing Properties

Abstract:Easily producible sensors for harmful industrial waste compounds are of significant interest for both human health and the environment. Three novel coordination polymers, [Ag(μ-aca)(μ4-bztpy)1/2] (1), [Ag(μ-bza)(μ-bpa)] (2), and [Ag2(μ-aca)2(μ-bpa)2]·EtOH·2H2O (3), were assembled in this study by reactions using Ag+ as a node with the pyridyl ligand 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)benzene (bztpy) or 9,10-bis(4-pyridyl)anthracene (bpa) and an auxiliary chelating carboxylic ligand. Single-crystal X-ray structural analyses revealed that compound 1 has a 3D framework consisting of 1D [Ag(aca)]∞ chains and bztpy linkers, while 2 and 3 have 2D layered structures consisting of binuclear Ag–carboxylate units and bpa linkers, respectively. Topological studies revealed that 1 has a bbf topology, while 2 and 3 are 2D [4,4] rhombic grids. The compounds were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and a luminescence study. The solids of 1–3 exhibited intense photoluminescent emission with λemmax at ca. 493, 472, and 500 nm, respectively. Abstract:Incorporating atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) into ordered self-assemblies endows them with advanced photophysical properties; however, their ordered arrangement in space is difficult to achieve with only noncovalent bonds between individual clusters. Herein, we illustrate the hierarchical self-assembly of atomically precise silver NCs (NH4)6[Ag6(mna)6] (Ag6-NCs) into hexagonal two-dimensional lamellas by intercluster π···π and C-H···π interactions, which then pack into three-dimensional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by the metal–ligand coordination interaction. Synergistic multiple bond-induced dynamic coassembly greatly enhanced the quantum yields and lifetimes, achieving the transformation of weak fluorescence to strong thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). The structure and luminescence transformation could be reversibly switched by tuning the pH values. The Ag6-NCs/Ca2+ coassemblies behaved as efficient yellow phosphors to afford white light emitting diode devices. This work demonstrates a synergistic multiple bond-induced hierarchical self-assembly to realize ordered layer-by-layer MOFs from NCs-based secondary building units with advanced TADF emission in a pH-tailored manner for potential applications in luminescent devices and sensors.
