Regional Environmental Change
Abstract:Mountains are social-ecological systems exposed to multiple climatic and socioeconomic drivers. The Pyrenees are a clear example of the concomitant challenges that these regions face, as they are exposed to stressors linked to depopulation, an economic shift towards tourism, and climate change. To understand how these multiple stressors affect the system's resources, it is useful to study them from a social-ecological system (SES) perspective. Focusing on a Pyrenean SES, we use piecewise structural equation modeling and network analysis to quantitatively describe the interactions between water resources, biodiversity, and the social and economic elements of the system. Our results show that the current economic focus and dependency on tourism severely impact water resources and biodiversity. Future climatic scenarios forecast a worsening of the pressures on the hydrological system and may threaten winter tourism. Actions to alleviate the pressures on water and biodiversity and to increase socioeconomic resilience are a priority. We argue that such actions will have to include both a diversification of the region's touristic offer and of the economy, coupled with a more sustainable use of water resources. Our findings highlight the importance of studying the interactions and causal relationships between SES elements. This can help gain a comprehensive understanding of how the SES functions and its sustainability challenges.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to solve the following key problems: 1. **Sustainability challenges in social - ecological systems**: The author focuses on the social - ecological systems (SES) in the Pyrenees, especially on how to understand and deal with the multiple stress factors faced by this region. These stress factors include climate change, population decline, and the shift of economic structure towards tourism, etc. 2. **Complex interactive relationships between variables**: Traditional research often focuses on identifying important driving variables while ignoring the complex interactions between these variables. Therefore, this study makes up for this deficiency by constructing a quantitative model to describe and analyze the interactions between hydrological resources, biodiversity, and socio - economic elements. 3. **Methodological innovation**: In order to better understand the functions of SES and the sustainability challenges it faces, this paper adopts a new method - piecewise structural equation modeling combined with network analysis tools. This method can not only measure the direct and indirect impacts between SES variables, but also help identify the key driving factors in the system and evaluate their impacts on water resources and biodiversity. 4. **Proposing adaptation strategies**: Based on the above analysis results, the article also explores possible adaptation strategies to promote the sustainable development of this region. For example, it is recommended to take measures to reduce the pressure on water resources and biodiversity, increase the resilience of the socio - economy, and promote the diversification of tourism products and economic structures. ### Summary In general, the main objective of this study is to diagnose and understand the key sustainability challenges of the social - ecological systems in the Pyrenees, especially by modeling the interactive relationships between various elements of SES, to provide scientific basis and support for the sustainable development of this region.
