Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an essential process during electrochemical water -splitting. Due to its sluggish kinetics, low cost and highly efficient catalyst is invariably desired to decrease its overpotential for large-scale application. However, the overpotential of most advanced OER electrocatalysts is still more than 200 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2. In this work, we constructed active layered NiFe double hydroxides with cation defects on self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CoNi nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composite substrate as integrated OER catalyst. Strikingly, electrochemical measurements showed that the optimized sample exhibited outstanding OER activity with low overpotentials of 178 and 268 mV at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline environment, alongside a good durability. The excellent OER performance was ascribed to the strongly synergistic effect of intrinsically active NiFe double hydroxide layers with abundant cation vacancies and 3D carbon nanotube composite substrate with good conductivity and various functional moieties, thus facilitating the electrocatalytic kinetic.(c) 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:The combination of highly active materials with judicious nanostructures is crucial to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which involves sluggish multistep electron transfer processes. Herein, TiN nanowire arrays are used as conductive trunks to support active Ni-doped Co3O4 (Ni0.27Co2.73O4) nanosheets to construct a binder-free three-dimensional (3D) electrode for OER. In the core@shell configuration, the TiN nanowire arrays possess a single-crystal-like structure favoring charge migration and the ultrathin Ni0.27Co2.73O4 nanosheets have a mesoporous structure providing more active sites. The hierarchically branched morphology, high conductivity and large surface area can be achieved simultaneously by the optimization in composition and nanostructure, which contributes to excellent electrochemical performances. The TiN@Ni0.27Co2.73O4 electrode shows much better OER activity than the Ni-doped Co3O4 nanosheets deposited on planar Ti substrate and low conductive TiO2 nanowire arrays. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A novel porous nanoscale NiO/NiCo2O4 heterostructure with abundant interfaces is designed to enhance the performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The NiO/NiCo2O4 heterostructure exhibits superior OER activity with a low overpotential (264 mV @10 mA cm−2) and small Tafel slope (44.2 mV dec−1). It also showcases excellent electrochemical stability which can remain stable over 24 h at 100 mA cm−2.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key half-reaction in renewable energy-related technologies, such as the electrocatalytic water splitting process and carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Unfortunately, developing an efficient and stable electrocatalyst to overcome the sluggish kinetics of OER remains a challenge. Herein, uniformly dispersed NiO and FeNi 3 alloy nanoparticles anchored on N-doped porous carbon (NC) electrocatalysts were designed and synthesized by a facile two-step calcination strategy. The influence of calcination temperature and the molar ratio of Ni:Fe on electrocatalytic OER activity was particularly studied. With an optimal calcination temperature and Ni/Fe ratio, FeNi 3 @NC-800 exhibited outstanding OER performance with a low overpotential of 242 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 34.7 mV dec −1 in alkaline media. The enhanced OER activity of FeNi 3 @NC-800 is mainly due to the synergistic effect of FeNi 3 alloy nanoparticles with NC and the high electrical conductivity between FeNi 3 and NC. This research will offer a new perspective on the construction of efficient and stable non-noble metal OER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as the half reaction of water electrolysis hindered the production of clean hydrogen, necessitates a cost-effective electrocatalyst. Spinel nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4), characterized by its lower cost, flexibility in oxidation states of cations, and stable spinel structure, holds promise as an OER electrocatalyst. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of its intrinsic electrochemical activity, conductivity, and active surface area. Inspired by the flexible valence states of Ni and Co, in this study, CeO2 was introduced into NiCo2O4 for further electronic structure adjustment. The result was the synthesis of an urchin-like NiCo2O4@CeO2 (NCOC), and the elucidation of its formation mechanisms, expressed conclusively through reaction formulas. NCOC, characterized by an open architecture and a rough surface, ensures rapid mass transportation and charge diffusion. Within NCOC, numerous oxophilic Ce3+ sites with oxygen vacancies construct electron transport pathways, accelerating charge-transfer. This simultaneously induces an increase in the oxidation states and proportions of Ni3+ and Co3+ in NCOC, reinforcing the covalence of Ni–O and Co–O bonds, expediting the ad/desorption of intermediates during OER. The electronic structure variations of NCOC were further verified through density functional theory (DFT) analyses, revealing alterations in adsorption configurations of intermediates and a decrease in adsorption free energies for intermediates on NCOC during OER. In practical terms, NCOC demonstrated a low overpotential of 228 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 under 1 M KOH, maintaining long-term electrochemical stability for 100 h. Overall, this study provides a universal approach for designing highly cost-efficient electrocatalysts for OER.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a critical role in sustainable energy conversion and storage, but OER is severely hampered owing to the lack of highly efficient catalysts. Here, we report an efficient electrocatalyst, with NiO/Co3O4 nanoparticles decorated on nitrogen -doped carbon (NiO/Co3O4@ NC). Abundant high -valence Ni3+ and Co3+ species were observed on the surface of the hybrid due to the strong NC-metal oxide and NiO-Co3O4 interactions. This unique structure leads to excellent OER performance, delivering a very low overpotential of 240 mV(&10 mA"cm(-2) on glassy carbon and 200 mV(&10 mA"cm(-2) on Ni foam in KOH and having a turnover frequency (@350 mV overpotential) 6 and 16 times higher than that of IrO, and RuO2, respectively.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and elucidating the structural transformation is urgent but remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a scalable approach to prepare welldefined Ni nanoparticles supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni/NC), which possess superior catalytic activity and durability for OER, especially for the sample pyrolyzed at 600 degrees C. Moreover, the dynamic surface reconstruction of as-prepared catalysts during OER was detailedly investigated by ex-situ characterizations and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with the difference method that is a novel technique to probe the subtle structural changes. Our findings demonstrate that a surface oxidation to Ni(OH)2 on Ni nanoparticles occurs at the beginning of OER, and then a reversible phase transitions between Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH depends on the applied potential. Thus, this work develops a new method for preparing low-cost Ni-based electrocatalyst and sheds light on the direct observation of surface structure evolution during the OER.

Defect engineering and constructing hollow nanostructures are effective methods to improve their electrocatalytic performance, so exploring an efficient route to obtain NiO catalysts simultaneously possessing oxygen vacancies and hollow nanostructure is necessary. In this work, the core-shelled NiO1-x hollow spheres with oxygen vacancies are prepared through solvothermal strategy followed by thermal treatment under H2/Ar atmosphere. And the content of oxygen vacancies can be regulated by varying the calcination time. Importantly, the existence of rich oxygen vacancies in NiO and its unique core-shelled hollow structure promote water adsorption and enhance charge transfer and thus the core-shelled NiO1-x hollow spheres show appealing electrocatalytic performance, which demonstrated efficient OER electrocatalysis with an overpotential (η) of 360 mV (at 10 mA cm-2) and Tafel slope of 103.9 mV dec-1 in an alkaline medium.

Abstract:A dual-confinement strategy was developed to design efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). NiCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and embedded in N-doped carbon fibers (NCF) by electrospinning and carbonization techniques. Dual effects of size confinement by the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon skeleton companied with spatial confinement by polyacrylonitrile (PAN) derived carbon fibers (CFs) for the NiCo NPs were executed to improve the electrocatalytic activity. In an alkaline solution, the prepared NiCo-C@CF exhibits significant advantages over the commercial RuO 2 catalyst i.e., a 61 mV lower overpotential of 363 mV under 50 mA cm −2 , and excellent durability of 87.5 % current density retention after 60 h of continuous OER polarization.

Abstract:Owing to the high demand for clean and renewable energy technologies, several studies have focused on developing economically feasible, highly effective, and stable non-precious electrocatalysts for promoting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This development has stimulated an expansion of investigative quests and indicated the importance of advancing electrocatalytic research in this field. Through a facile and efficient method, Ni nanoparticles were uniformly embedded into nanoporous carbon nanorods (Ni-NCN), which are subsequently electrodeposited on CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets to produce highly efficient Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH composites used for OER. The composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward OER owing to its low overpotential (ƞ10 mA = 280 mV), small Tafel slope (42 mV dec<sup>-1</sup>), and excellent durability. The Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH catalyst exhibited higher OER activity owing to its uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles, large specific surface area, enhanced electron transport, and synergistic effect of multiple composites. Additionally, the enhanced synergistic effect of Ni-NCN promoted higher OER performance compared with Ni-undoped carbon nanorod/LDH, indicating that the Ni dopant and LDH significantly contributed to the overall OER performance. The synergistic effect of multiple composites significantly contributed to the excellent OER performance, indicating their potential as OER catalyst.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrolytic water splitting. It is urgent to explore highly active non-precious metal OER catalysts. Herein, the etching combined with the electrodeposition was used to synthesize the efficient Ni–Fe/p-CoAl catalyst, which exhibits ideal OER performance. A low overpotential of 282 mV and 296 mV are needed to achieve the current density of 50 mA/cm 2 and 100 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst shows good durability with no detectable degradation during long-term operation. The enhanced OER performance can be attributed to the large electrochemical surface area and the strong interaction between Ni–Fe nanosheets and active substrate.

Abstract:Amorphous/crystalline (a/c) metal-oxide nanocages with defects are promising materials towards the realization of efficient water electrocatalysis. In this work, we not only constructed a Ru doping porous nanocages (PNCs) structure, but also studied the relationship between both crystallinity of a/c degrees and oxygen vacancy (O vac ) levels in a/c CoNiRuO x PNCs catalysts and their catalytic properties. Owing to the rich mass transfer channels, optimized crystallinity and O vac levels, and efficient catalytic model of "Ni-O-Co-O-Ru-O-Ni" for well-distributed electron density, the optimized CoNiRuO x -2 PNCs exhibited the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties with an overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and remarkable stability for 60 h, surpassing other series of a/c CoNiRuO x and benchmark RuO 2 catalysts. In addition, the electrode couple a/c CoNiRuO x -2//Pt/C only need an ultralow voltage of 1.54 V to drive overall water splitting. This work proposed the introduction and quantitative control on both a/c heterostructure degree and O vac level, offering guidelines for OER catalysis.

Abstract:The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the overall water splitting. Herein, we prepared a highly exposed NiFeOx ultra-small nanoclus-ters supported on boron-doped carbon nonotubes catalyst, which achieves a 10 mA/cm2 anodic current density at a low overpotential of 213 mV and the Tafel slope of 52 mV/dec in 1.0 mol/L KOH, superior to the pristine NiFeOx-CNTs and other state-of-the-art OER catalysts in alkaline media. A combination study (XPS, sXAS and XAFS) verifies that the local atomic structure of Ni and Fe atoms in the nanoclusters are similar to NiO and Fe2O3, respectively, and the B atoms which are doped into the crystal lattice of CNTs leads to the optimization of Ni 3d eg orbitals. Furthermore, in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopies reveal that the high valence state of Ni atoms are served as the real active sites. Abstract:Designing highly active and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key to success in sustainable water splitting reaction, a sustainable route towards high purity hydrogen production. Interface engineering is one of the most effective strategies for modulating the local electronic structure of active sites to enhance catalytic activity. Herein, NiFe2O4−x nanoparticles were integrated to NiMoO4 nanowires (NiFe2O4−x/NMO) grown on nickel foam to construct an extended interface with strong electronic interactions. The NiFe2O4−x/NMO demonstrates high OER activities as manifested by a low overpotential of 326 mV at a high current density of 600 mA cm−2 and good long-term stability. The intimate interface between NiFe2O4−x and NiMoO4 is responsible for the Fe-facilitated phase transition to active γ-NiOOH phase as revealed by in situ Raman spectroelectrochemical studies. Abstract:The porous NiO/NiCo2O4 nanotubes are prepared via a coaxial electrospinning technique followed by an annealing treatment. The resultant NiO/NiCo2O4 hybrid is developed as a highly efficient electrocatalyst, which exhibits significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity, long-term operation stability, and tolerance to crossover effect compared to NiO nanofibers, NiCo2O4 nanofibers and commercial Pt(20%)/C for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in alkaline environment. The excellent electrocatalytic performance may be attributed to the unique microstructures of the porous NiO/NiCo2O4 nanotubes, such as heterogeneous hybrid structure, open porous tubular structure, and the well dispersity of the two components. Moreover, the promising and straightforward coaxial electrospinning proves itself to be an efficient pathway for the preparation of nanomaterials with tubular architectures and it can be used for large-scale production of catalysts in fuel cells.

Abstract:Plasma treatment as an effective strategy can simultaneously achieve surface modification and heteroatom doping. Here, an N/P-doped NiFeV oxide nanosheet catalyst (N/P-NiFeVO) constructed by Ar/PH 3 plasma treatment is used to drive the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The introduction of V species leads to the formation of an ultrathin ordered nanostructure and exposure of more active sites. Compared to the 2D NiFeV LDH, the prepared N/P-NiFeVO by plasma treatment possesses multiple-valence Fe, V and Ni species, which regulate the intrinsic electronic structure and enable a superior catalytic activity for the OER in alkaline media. Specifically, the N/P-NiFeVO only require an overpotential of 273 mV to drive the current density of 100 mA cm −2 . What's more, the electrode can maintain a stable current density in a long-term oxygen evolution reaction (∼120 h) under alkaline conditions. This work provides new insight for the rational design of mixed metal oxides for OER electrocatalysts.
