Abstract:A large amount of fluorine−containing wastewater was produced with the rapid development of the industry. Excessive fluoride content in water will not only endanger ecological security but also pose threat to human health. In this study, common new adsorbents for defluorination, such as metal−based adsorbents, natural adsorbents, and nanomaterial adsorbents were reviewed for its physicochemical properties and fluorine removal efficiency. The fluorine removal mechanism of different adsorbents was introduced in detail, and the future work of the removal of fluorine using novel adsorbents was proposed. This research also introduces the application of the coupling of the adsorption method with the technology of chemical precipitation, filtration, and super−magnetic separation to treat high concentration of fluoride wastewater. A good selection of process combinations according to different needs can achieve high−efficiency defluorination in water. Finally, some existing problems of practical operation of fluorine using removal materials in the environment are summarized, hoping to contribute to the future research of fluorine removal materials.

Abstract:More than 20 countries are still suffering problems of excessive fluoride containing water, and greater than 8mg/L fluoride groundwater has been reported in some villages in China. In order to meet the challenge in the drinking water defluoridation engineering, a high efficiency and affinity defluoridation adsorbent PPy/TiO2 composite was designed and synthetized by in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction Investigator (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TG), N2 isotherm analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Zeta potential analysis were conducted to characterize surface and textural properties of the as-prepared PPy/TiO2, and the possibility of fluoride adsorption was carefully estimated by adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies. Characterization investigations demonstrate the uniqueness of surface and textural properties, such as suitable specific surface area and abundant positively charged nitrogen atoms (N+), which indicate the composite is a suitable material for the fluoride adsorption. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics follow better with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity reaches 33.178mg/g at 25°C according to Langmuir model, and particular interest was the ability to reduce the concentration of fluoride from 11.678mg/L to 1.5mg/L for drinking water at pH of 7 within 30min. Moreover, the adsorbent can be easily recycled without the loss of adsorption capacity after six cycles, greatly highlighting its outstanding affinity to fluoride, low-cost and novel to be used in the purification of fluoride containing water for drinking. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was extensively investigated and discussed by FTIR investigation and batch adsorption studies including effect of pH, surface potential and thermodynamics. The adsorption is confirmed to be a spontaneous and exothermic process with decreasing entropy, which is prominently conducted through electrostatic attraction, and ionic exchange, and chelation may be also involved. Hydroxyls and positively charged nitrogen atoms play important roles in the adsorption.

Abstract:Fluoride contamination in water environment due to natural and artificial activities has been recognized as one of the major problems worldwide. Developing effective and robust technologies for excess fluoride removal from water environment becomes highly important. Among the commonly used treatment technologies applied for fluoride removal, adsorption technique has been explored widely and offers a highly efficient simple and low-cost process for fluoride removal from water. This review reports the recent developments in fluoride removal from water environment by adsorption methods. Studies on fluoride removal from aqueous solutions using various carbon materials are reviewed. It is evident that various adsorbents with high fluoride removal capacity have been developed, however, there is still an urgent need to transfer the removal process to industrial scale. Regeneration studies need to be performed in more extent to recover the adsorbent in field conditions, enhancing the economic feasibility of the process. Based on the review, four technical strategies of adsorption method including nano-surface effect, structural memory effect, anti-competitive adsorption and ionic sieve effect can be proposed. The design of adsorbents through these four strategies can greatly improve the removal efficiency of fluoride in water and provide guidance for the development of new efficient methods for fluoride removal in the future.

Abstract:Fluoride contamination in drinking water due to natural and anthropogenic activities has been recognized as one of the major problems worldwide imposing a serious threat to human health. Among several treatment technologies applied for fluoride removal, adsorption process has been explored widely and offers satisfactory results especially with mineral-based and/or surface modified adsorbents. In this review, an extensive list of various adsorbents from literature has been compiled and their adsorption capacities under various conditions (pH, initial fluoride concentration, temperature, contact time, adsorbent surface charge, etc.) for fluoride removal as available in the literature are presented along with highlighting and discussing the key advancement on the preparation of novel adsorbents tested so far for fluoride removal. It is evident from the literature survey that various adsorbents have shown good potential for the removal of fluoride. However, still there is a need to find out the practical utility of such developed adsorbents on a commercial scale, leading to the improvement of pollution control.

Abstract:To facilitate the separation and bactericidal properties of polypyrrole (PPy) for fluoride removal from water, Ag@PPy composites with nanofiber morphology were successfully fabricated by direct redox reaction of pyrrole monomer and silver ion in acidic solution. The reduced silver is evenly distributed in Ag@PPy composites and accounts for 70 wt%. S BET and aperture size of Ag@PPy composites have no obvious variation compared with that of primitive PPy, but the isoelectric point is up to 6.68 from 4.30 (PPy). The settlement experiment indicated the good separation performance of the Ag@PPy composites from water. Subsequently, the Ag@PPy composites were applied to remove fluoride ions from water, and the fluoride adsorption process by Ag@PPy composites is pH-dependent, stability and recyclability. Furthermore, the Ag@PPy composites exhibit high affinity for fluoride ions and the adsorption process is kinetic fast within 60 min to reach equilibrium. The adsorption mechanism of fluoride ions onto Ag@PPy composites was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), flourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). Meanwhile, the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method and the colony count method were used to evaluate the antibacterial property of the Ag@PPy composites. The results illustrated that the fluoride adsorption onto Ag@PPy composites is mainly an ion exchange mechanism, and the introduction of silver into the Ag@PPy composites enhanced the separation performance, adsorption stability and antibacterial property of PPy.

Abstract:In this study, the polypyrrole (PPy) samples doped with Cl- (PPy-Cl), SO42- (PPy-SO4) and SO42-+Cl- (PPy-SO4+Cl) were synthesized by chemical polymerization for the adsorptive removal of fluoride ion from water. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared PPy samples were characterized by FT-IR, BET, SEM, XPS, and zeta potential. The adsorption experiments revealed that the PPy-Cl exhibited faster kinetics and higher adsorption capacity (13.98 mg/g), more than 4 times that of PPy-SO4 (3.08 mg/g) and PPy-SO4+Cl (3.17 mg/g). The kinetics of the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir model. FT-IR, EDX, and XPS tests for PPy samples before and after fluoride adsorption demonstrated that anion exchange between F- and Cl- or SO42- was the prior mechanism for fluoride ion removal from water. Cl- was more favorable than SO42- in the ion exchange with F-. Meanwhile, the Cl- or SO42- exchanged with F- was mainly bound to the active nitrogen that accounts for 6% of the total nitrogen in PPy molecular matrix. Further study of zeta potential and pH influence experiment demonstrated the electrostatic interaction is auxiliary interaction for the fluoride removal by doped PPy samples.

Abstract:Many industries such as iron and steel metallurgy, copper and zinc smelting, the battery industry, and cement manufacturing industries discharge high concentrations of fluoride-containing wastewater into the environment. Subsequently, the discharge of high fluoride effluent serves as a threat to human life as well as the ecological ability to sustain life. This article analyses the advantages and drawbacks of some fluoride remediation technologies such as precipitation and flocculation, membrane technology, ion exchange technology, and adsorption technology. Among them, adsorption technology is considered the obvious choice and the best applicable technology. As such, several adsorbents with high fluoride adsorption capacity such as modified alumina, metal oxides, biomass, carbon-based materials, metal-organic frameworks, and other adsorption materials including their characteristics have been comprehensively summarized. Additionally, different adsorption conditions of the various adsorbents, such as pH, temperature, initial fluoride concentration, and contact time have been discussed in detail. The study found out that the composite synergy between different materials, morphological and structural control, and the strengthening of their functional groups can effectively improve the ability of the adsorbents for removing fluoride. This study has prospected the direction of various adsorbents for removing fluoride in wastewater, which would serve as guiding significance for future research in the field.

Abstract:Recent literature has seen a significant surge in studies focusing on new adsorbent materials for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASg), a class of contaminants found in natural waters worldwide that pose a considerable threat to human and environmental health. Despite growing interest, the fundamental mechanisms of PFAS adsorption on these materials are not fully understood, thus hindering the progress of developing effective solutions for PFAS removal. This Review aims to bridge that knowledge gap by offering a critical appraisal of recent innovations in adsorbent materials specifically designed for treating PFAS. Strategies aimed at enhancing nanopore capacity or introducing anion-exchange capabilities in adsorption materials have shown promise. Innovative materials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphene oxide are evaluated. Modified clay-based and silica-based adsorbents have demonstrated efficacy in removing PFAS, driven by the hydrophobic effect, Coulombic interactions, and electrostatic interactions. Polymers, ranging from natural types to synthetic variants, have shown promise in PFAS removal across a wide pH range. We discuss mechanisms including F–F interactions, ion-pair adsorption, and ion exchange for chemically and thermally modified adsorbents and provide a general guideline for the design of PFAS adsorbents. This Review offers a holistic view of the advances related to PFAS adsorbent materials.
Rapid and efficient removal of fluoride ions from aqueous solution using a polypyrrole coated hydrous tin oxide nanocomposite

Abstract:Polypyrrole/hydrous tin oxide nanocomposites (PPy/HSnO NC 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) were synthesized through encapsulating HSnO by the PPy via an in situ polymerization for fluoride removal. The optimized adsorbent i.e. PPy/HSnO NC 3 was characterized using FE-SEM, HR-TEM, ATR-FTIR, XRD, BET, TGA and zeta sizer. Microscopic images revealed the encapsulation of HSnO by precipitating PPy during polymerization. The FTIR and XRD studies confirmed the presence of both constituents. The BET surface area and pHpzc of the adsorbent were estimated to be 65.758m(2)/g and 7.6, respectively. The fluoride adsorption followed pseudo-second-order model and was commendably rapid. The monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 26.16-28.99mg/g at pH 6.5±0.1. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the sorption of F(-) was spontaneous, endothermic and that physisorption occurred. The calculated activation energy (Ea∼20.05kJ/mol) provided further evidence of a physisorption mechanism. Moreover, the adsorbent performed very well over a considerably wide pH range of 3.5-8.5 and in the presence of other co-existing ions. The regeneration of the F(-) laden PPy/HSnO NC 3 showed a high desorption efficiency of 95.81% up to 3 cycles. Ground water tested results also demonstrate the potential utility of the PPy/HSnO NC as an effective adsorbent.
Polypyrrole-grafted peanut shell biological carbon as a potential sorbent for fluoride removal: Sorption capability and mechanism

Abstract:In this study, an effective defluoridation adsorbent was developed by depositing polypyrrole (PPy) on granular peanut shell biological carbon (BC) via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The variables of defluoridation process (i.e., adsorbent dosage, fluoride solution pH, and anionic interference) were tested. The mechanism was determined by isotherm and kinetic studies, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and automatic titration. The PPy-grafted BC (PPy/BC) composite performed commendably from pH 2.0 to 10.0, and exhibited high selectivity for fluoride in the presence of several co-existing anions. The experimental data were described well by a Langmuir isotherm curve, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 17.15 mg g(-1). Kinetic studies illustrated the adsorption process was accomplished via surface adsorption as well as by intraparticle diffusion. In addition, mesoporous diffusion was the rate-controlling step in intraparticle diffusion process. BET and SEM analysis revealed the sponge-like polymer adhered to the BC and plugged the pores. XPS, FTIR, and SEM confirmed that fluoride removal was accomplished via the replacement of doped ionizable chloride ions (Cl(-)) coupled with positively charged nitrogen (N(+)), computation of XPS data enabled the formulation of a three-layer-deep hypothesis for PPy.

Abstract:With the constant rising demand for pure water to meet the needs of the growing population particularly in developing countries, fluoride remediation from drinking water has emerged as an increasingly important matter of public concern. In the past decade, significant efforts and advances have been made for developing efficient adsorbents for fluoride removal from water. This review summarizes recent advances (2012–2016) in defluoridation techniques and highlights the challenges and opportunities for future research in the important field of fluoride removal. The spectroscopic techniques, used to develop adsorbents/adsorption mechanism, discussed in this review are X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The defluoridation techniques have been discussed in four categories: precipitation, membrane, ion-exchange, and adsorption techniques. Then recent research on fluoride removal using various adsorbents with their spectroscopic studies are summarized and discussed with regard to their synthetic chemistry, properties, and applications. The advantages and disadvantages of defluoridation techniques and adsorbents have been presented. Finally, the future needs and perspectives of fluoride removal are addressed.

Abstract:Rapid industrialization is deteriorating water quality, and fluoride pollution in water is one of the most serious environmental pollution problems. Adsorption technology is an efficient and selective process for removing fluoride from aqueous solutions using adsorbents. Metal-based adsorbents synergize the advantages of fast adsorption, high adsorption capacity, and excellent selectivity to effectively remove fluoride from water bodies, promising to satisfy environmental sustainability requirements. This paper reviews the metal-based adsorbents: iron-based, aluminum-based, lanthanum-based, cerium-based, titanium-based, zirconium-based, and multi-metal composite adsorbents, primarily focusing on the adsorption conditions and fluoride removal capacities and discusses prospects and challenges in the synthesis and application of metal-based adsorbents. This paper aims to stimulate new thinking and innovation in developing the next generation of sustainable adsorbents.

Abstract:Fluoride is one of the essential trace elements for the human body, but excessive fluoride will cause serious environmental and health problems. This paper summarizes researches on the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions using newly developed or improved biomass materials and biomass-like organic materials in recent years. These biomass materials are classified into chitosan, microorganisms, lignocellulose plant materials, animal attribute materials, biological carbonized materials and biomass-like organic materials, which are explained and analyzed. By comparing adsorption performance and mechanism of adsorbents for removing fluoride, it is found that carbonizing materials and modifying adsorbents with metal ions are more beneficial to improving adsorption efficiency and the adsorption mechanisms are various. The adsorption capacities are still considerable after regeneration. This paper not only reviews the properties of these materials for fluoride removal, but also focuses on the comparison of materials performance and fluoride removal mechanism. Herein, by discussing the improved adsorption performance and research technology development of biomass materials and biomass-like organic materials, various innovative ideas are provided for adsorbing and removing contaminants.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have drawn great attention due to their wide distribution in water bodies and toxicity to human beings. Adsorption is considered as an efficient treatment technique for meeting the increasingly stringent environmental and health standards for PFAS. This paper systematically reviewed the current approaches of PFAS adsorption using different adsorbents from drinking water as well as synthetic and real wastewater. Adsorbents with large mesopores and high specific surface area adsorb PFAS faster, their adsorption capacities are high, and the adsorption process are usually more effective under low pH conditions. PFAS adsorption mechanisms mainly include electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, anion exchange, and ligand exchange. Various adsorbents show promising performances but challenges such as requirements of organic solvents in regeneration, low adsorption selectivity, and complicated adsorbent preparations should be addressed before large scale implementation. Moreover, the aid of decision-making tools including response surface methodology (RSM), techno-economic assessment (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were discussed for engineering applications. The use of these tools is highly recommended prior to scale-up to determine if the specific adsorption process is economically feasible and sustainable. This critical review presented insights into the most fundamental aspects of PFAS adsorption that would be helpful to the development of effective adsorbents for the removal of PFAS in future studies and provide opportunities for large-scale engineering applications.

Colloids and Surfaces A Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects

Abstract:Drinking water sources should eliminate fluoride ions, as they pose a serious threat to human health. By using in situ oxidative polymerization and Pechini's method of CeO 2 (CO), a new hybrid composite, CPP-2, was designed. Several physicochemical techniques were used to establish the properties of the adsorbent in its as synthesized state. The F - ions were removed from effluent using the hybrid composite adsorbent. The adsorption isotherm model was best represented by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. It yielded a maximum adsorption capacity of 351.8 mg/g at an optimal pH of 4 ± 0.2 at room temperature. The pseudo second order model best describes the adsorption process according to kinetic results. To get a detailed understanding of the fluoride adsorption mechanism, FTIR and XPS spectra are analyzed. Anionic exchange of the hydroxyl groups with F - ions and electrostatic attractions of the protonated hydroxyl on the surface of the adsorbent, as well as the nitrogen atoms of the amino groups from the polypyrrole (PP) moiety with the F - ions, were responsible for the process. The enthalpy change (ΔH° = +6.32 KJ/mol) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG° = -8.95 KJ/mol) were obtained from the thermodynamic data, which demonstrated the spontaneity, feasibility, and endothermic nature of adsorption. It had a great potential for defluoridation from groundwater at a pH level below the thresholds specified by the WHO and could withstand up to five cycles of adsorption and desorption. The overall results exhibited that CPP-2 has an enormous promise for defluoridation.

Abstract:2-chloro-6-fluorobenzyl and 2-chloro-6-fluorobenzaldehyde,etc.are important intermediates in pharmaceutical industry.A great deal of highly concentrated fluorine-containing aromatic hydrocarbon wastewater,which causes environmental pollution,is produced in the course of production.Macro-porous adsorptive resins have been used for treating those kinds of wastewater.The results show that the COD removing rate reaches 73.4%,when macro-porous resins LS600 and LS106 are 303 K,pH 3-6 and flow rate 5 BV/h,and the removing rates of 3-chloro-2-methyl-phenol,2-chloro-6-fluorobenzaldehyde and 2-chloro-6-fluoro-benzoic acid are higher than 98.1%.The fluorine removing capacity is 100-120 mg/L.Furthermore,the useful resources in the wastewater can be recycled effectively.

Abstract:Due to the increase in industrialization, climate change, and urbanization, the quality of drinking water is declining day by day. Fluoride levels in drinking water have seen a remarkable increase in several places across the world in the last decade. The accumulation of fluoride in an aqueous environment is caused by both natural as well as anthropogenic sources. The main concern regarding fluoride contamination is dental and bones related issues. According to WHO guidelines, the permissible limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/L. Fluoride contamination causes a detrimental effect on the health of the people. This article highlights the distribution of fluoride in India, as well as the many routes by which it enters the human body and probable fluoride metabolism inside the body. The numerous strategies used to remediate fluoride from water, like precipitation/coagulation, ion exchange, membrane separation, electro-separation, and adsorption are elaborated. Amongst these techniques, adsorption is one of the best-optimized techniques involving sustainable materials like biochars, which are cost-effective, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly adsorbents.

Abstract:Due to chemical and physiological inertness and wide usage in nearly every aspect of our daily life, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are now ubiquitous in the environment, including drinking water sources. As most biological and chemical destruction methods have so far shown limited efficiencies, adsorption, a simple and cost-effective treatment, is widely adopted for the removal of PFAS from water/wastewater. This paper aims to review the recent progress in PFAS adsorption using various adsorbents. The performance of different types of adsorbents, including the traditional carbonaceous materials and resins as well as the newly-synthesized minerals, biomaterials, and polymers, in PFAS removal was summarized. Furthermore, the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms were critically reviewed. Real-life adsorption applications (large-scale setups, adsorption-involved treatment trains and point-of-use/point-of-entry systems) were also examined. Learned lessons, current challenges and recommendations on future research were provided regarding results of tests in real environmental matrices, pilot and/or field scale studies of promising newly-developed adsorbents, and the improvement of the removal of alternative PFAS (mostly short-chained ones).

Abstract:PFAS, or per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances, have received considerable attention due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. To address this problem, adsorption has emerged as an effective method for removing PFAS compounds from water. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of various adsorbents used for PFAS removal, including activated carbon, ion exchange resins, clay, and emerging materials such as covalent and metal‐organic framework adsorbents. The effectiveness of these adsorbents in removing PFAS compounds is discussed, along with the factors influencing their adsorption, such as pH, competitive matters, and temperature.
