Abstract:Smart Materials are those which can undergo a reversible property change in response to an external influence. An important polymeric Smart Material is poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVF2, which is piezoelectric. The structure of PVF2 determines which crystal phases will be electrically active. Recent research has shown that the electrically active beta phase of PVF2 grows preferentially in nanocomposites of PVF2 mixed with organically modified silicates (OMS) ‘1-4’. These nanocomposite Smart Materials offer a new processing strategy for PVF2 piezo-films. Using PVF2 nanocomposites as the research focal point, a summer internship program was developed for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) undergraduate students [5,6]. This paper describes the program and presents research results achieved by the interns. It is written from the perspective of the Principal Investigator, Cebe, on behalf of all the co-authors.

Abstract:Nature Communications has been striving to support Early Career Researchers (ECRs) through different pilot schemes including the peer review mentoring programs and co-review mentoring initiative . The 2nd Rising Stars workshop, held at the Henry Royce Institute on the 9th of February, 2024, aims to celebrate and support rising stars within underrepresented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and this greatly aligns with the aspirations in our journal. In this conversation, the experiences and advice shared by representatives from various disciplines in the workshop are translated to a wider audience in Nature Communications. Dr Alex Ramadan (Lecturer at the University of Sheffield), Dr Lucy Whalley (Assistant Professor at Northumbria University), Dr Maddison Coke (Senior Experimental Officer at the University of Manchester), and Dr Yi Liu (Lecturer at Loughborough University) discuss the opportunities and challenges they face towards their career with work-life balance, family and caring responsibility, and diversity and inclusion in their workplace, and share their experiences on how mentorship supports their personal and professional growth.

DNA-Templated Fabrication of Arbitrary-Structured Porous Carbon Materials

Abstract:: The goal of this YIP project is to develop a toolset that will enable the fabrication of 2D and 3D porous carbon materials with arbitrary structures. We have achieved the original objective of the project. We have coated both 1D and 2D DNA nanostructures with a thin film of Al2O3 by atomic layer deposition (ALD) followed by heating the coated DNA nanostructure in low pressure H2 atmosphere at 800 - 1000 degrees Celsius. Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) data showed that carbon nanostructures were produced and their shape were the same as the DNA nanostructure. Conductive AFM measurement shows that the carbon nanostructures are electrically conductive. These research activities have resulted in 24 peer reviewed journal articles (23 published and 1 in revision) acknowledging the support of the AFOSR YIP grant. In recognition of his research contributions, the PI was awarded a Young Investigator Award by the European Materials Research Society 2013 Spring Meeting (Symposium Q: Bionanomaterials for imaging, sensing and actuating).

Abstract:The European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) Early-Career Researcher (ECR) panel, which represents the interests of the ECR community to ECFA, presents in this document its initiatives and activities in the year 2023. This report summarises the process of the first big turnover in the panel composition at the start of 2023 and reports on the activities of the active working groups - either pursued from before or newly established. The overarching goal of the ECFA-ECR panel is to better understand and support the diverse interests of early-career researchers in the ECFA community and beyond.

Progress in Organic Coatings

Abstract:Self-stratifying coatings are excellent replacements for traditional coatings, which need primers and sealers during their application on substrates. In this work, we introduced aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens (AIEgens) during the synthesis of self-stratifying coating to study and trace the mechanism and reactions between the individual components of the coating resin, its film-forming properties, and response to the environment in real time. The AIEgens introduced into the coating materials were a backbone to these studies. They can emit light (under excitation) with different properties depending on how their molecular rotors are restricted or free to move. More still, the reported fluorescent AIE-based self-stratifying coatings demonstrated reliable hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties (contact angle above 130°), good thermal tolerance (above 350°), excellent toughness, chemical, and corrosion resistance. Such coatings can find use in various home and industrial applications.
