Abstract:Recent studies have shown that the air-water interface of aqueous microdroplets is a source of OH radicals and hydrogen peroxide in the atmosphere. Several parameters such as droplet size, salt, and organic content have been suggested to play key roles in the formation of these oxidants. In this study, we focus on the effect of acidity on the spontaneous interfacial hydrogen peroxide formation of salt-containing droplets. Na2SO4, NaCl, and NaBr bulk solutions, at the range of pH 4 to 9.5, were nebulized, using ultra high-purity N2/O2 (80%/20%), and H2O2 was measured in the collected droplets. All of the experiments were performed in T = 292 ± 1 K and humidity levels of 90 ± 2%. For Na2SO4 and NaCl, the H2O2 concentration was increased by ∼40% under alkaline conditions, suggesting that OH- enriched environments promote its production. When CO2 was added in the ultrapure air, H2O2 was observed to be lower at higher pH. This suggests that dissolved CO2 can initiate reactions with OH radicals and electrons, impacting the interfacial H2O2 production. H2O2 formation in NaBr droplets did not display any dependence on the pH or the bath gas, showing that secondary reactions occur at the interface in the presence of Br-, which acts as an efficient interfacial source of electrons.

Abstract:Recent reports on the spontaneous formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at the air–water and solid–water interfaces challenge our current understanding of aquatic chemistry and have ramifications on atmosphere chemistry models, surface science, and green chemistry. Suggested mechanisms underlying this chemical transformation include ultrahigh instantaneous electric fields at the air–water interface and the oxidation of water and reduction of the solid at the solid–water interface. Here, we revisit this curious problem with NMR spectroscopy (with an H2O2 detection limit ≥50 nM) and pay special attention to the effects of nebulizing gas, dissolved oxygen content, and the solid–water interface on this chemical transformation in condensed and sprayed water microdroplets. Experiments reveal that the reduction of dissolved oxygen at the solid–water interface predominantly contributes to the H2O2 formation (not the oxidation of hydroxyl ions at the air–water interface or the oxidation of water at the solid–water interface). We find that the H2O2 formation is accompanied by the consumption (i.e., reduction) of dissolved oxygen and the oxidation of the solid surface, i.e., in the absence of dissolved oxygen, the formation of H2O2(aq) is not observed within the detection limit of ≥50 nM. Remarkably, the tendency of the solids investigated in this work towards forming H2O2 in water followed the same order as their positions in the classic Galvanic series. These findings bust the prevailing myths surrounding H2O2 formation due to the air–water interface, the ultrahigh electric fields therein, or the micro-scale of droplets. The hitherto unrealized role of the oxidation of the solid surface due to dissolved oxygen in the formation of H2O2 is exposed. These findings are especially relevant to corrosion science, surface science, and electrochemistry, among others.

Abstract:Recent reports on the spontaneous formation of H2O2(aq) at the air-water interface and the solid-water interface have been sensational. The speculated mechanism at the air-water interface is based on instantaneous ultrahigh electric fields and the micro-scale of droplets, whereas the solid-water interface is speculated to be the site for oxidation of water (or hydroxide ions) and reduction of the solid surface. We utilized 1H-NMR spectroscopy to investigate the effects of the nebulizing gas, the dissolved oxygen content, and solid substrates on the H2O2(aq) formation (detection limit 50 nM). Experiments revealed that contrary to the sensational claims, the air-water interface is not the site for H2O2(aq) formation; instead, it is the solid-water interface where H2O2(aq) is formed during the reduction of dissolved oxygen and oxidation of the solid surface. Curiously, the tendencies of solid substrates towards forming H2O2(aq) follow the classic Galvanic series. This report advances the current understanding of aquatic chemistry and should be relevant to corrosion science, surface science, and electrochemistry.

Abstract:Recent reports on the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H$_2$O$_2$) in water microdroplets produced via pneumatic spraying or capillary condensation have garnered significant attention. How covalent bonds in water could break under such conditions challenges our textbook understanding of physical chemistry and the water substance. While there is no definitive answer, it has been speculated that ultrahigh electric fields at the air-water interface are responsible for this chemical transformation. Here, we resolve this mystery via a comprehensive experimental investigation of H$_2$O$_2$ formation in (i) water microdroplets sprayed over a range of liquid flow-rates, the (shearing) air flow rates, and the air composition (ii) water microdroplets condensed on hydrophobic substrates formed via hot water or humidifier under controlled air composition. Specifically, we assessed the contributions of the evaporative concentration and shock waves in sprays and the effects of trace O$_3$(g) on the H$_2$O$_2$ formation. Glovebox experiments revealed that the H$_2$O$_2$ formation in water microdroplets was most sensitive to the air-borne ozone (O$_3$) concentration. In the absence of O$_3$(g), we could not detect H$_2$O$_2$(aq) in sprays or condensates (detection limit: 250 nM. In contrast, microdroplets exposed to atmospherically relevant O$_3$(g) concentration (10-100 ppb) formed 2-30 $\mu$M H$_2$O$_2$(aq); increasing the gas-liquid surface area, mixing, and contact duration increased H$_2$O$_2$(aq) concentration. Thus, the mystery is resolved - the water surface facilitates the O$_3$(g) mass transfer, which is followed by the chemical transformation of O$_3$(aq) into H$_2$O$_2$(aq). These findings should also help us understand the implications of this chemistry in natural and applied contexts.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a widely used green oxidant. Until now, research focused on the development of efficient catalysts for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR). However, electrolyte effects on the 2e– ORR have remained little understood. We report a significant effect of alkali metal cations (AMCs) on carbons in acidic environments. The presence of AMCs at a glassy carbon electrode shifts the half wave potential from -0.48 to - 0.22 VRHE. This cationic induced enhancement effect exhibits a uniquely sensitive on/off switching behaviour depending on the voltammetric protocol. Voltammetric and in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopic evidence is presented, supporting a controlling role of the potential of zero charge of the catalytic enhancement. Density functional theory calculations associate the enhancement with the stabilization of the *OOH key intermediate as a result of locally induced field effects from the AMCs. Finally, we developed a refined reaction mechanism for the H2O2 production in presence of AMCs.

Abstract:Understanding ultraviolet photolysis induced by low pressure mercury lamp that emits both 254 nm ultraviolet (UV254) and 185 nm vacuum UV (VUV185) is currently challenging due to the copresence of multiple direct and indirect photochemical processes involving a series of highly-reactive radicals. Herein we examined the formation and transformation of H2O2 in water, which is both a precursor and a product of radicals, under various pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions. The trends show that H2O2 increased rapidly at early stage and then remained steady in DO-rich water or declined somewhat in DOpoor water, ultimately leading to higher steady-state H2O2 in DO-rich water. The maximum H2O2 contents nonetheless were similar among waters with different DO, suggesting that H2O2 in this system was mostly generated by hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) recombination, which is an oxygen-independent H2O2 formation pathway, rather than by reduced oxygen via hydrogen atom (FP) or hydrated electron (e(aq)(-)), which is an oxygen-dependent pathway. Increasing pH (from 63 to 10.0) or bicarbonate dosage dramatically decreased H2O2 formation too. Mathematically, the fates of H2O2 as a function of pH, DO, and time were well modeled (R-2 >= 0.92), in which the rates of H2O2 formation and destruction were greater in DO-poor water than those in DO-rich water. In addition, we found that the steady-state concentrations of center dot OH used for degradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid, an 'OH probe, correlated well with the center dot OH levels used for H2O2 formation (R-2 = 0.98). These results hence may help better understand the UV/VUV process via H2O2 evolutions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The OH + H2SO4. NH3, NH2 + H2SO4, and NH2 + H2SO4. H2O reactions have been theoretically investigated using high-accuracy quantum chemical methods and conventional transition state theory. The calculation results reveal that remarkable tunneling effects appear at 200 K in the OH + H2SO4. NH3 reaction, compared with obvious tunneling effects below 100 K in the OH + NH3 reaction. The calculated rate constants predict that the hydrogen atom of the free OH group in M1 (H2SO4. NH3) abstracted via OH can compete well with the H atom in H2SO4 abstracted by OH at 200-240 K. The reaction kinetic results also show that a single water molecule could play an important role in the NH2 + H2SO4. H2O reaction below 240 K. The present results provide new insights into the atmospheric oxidation of sulfuric acid, which could be of great use in understanding atmospheric nucleation processes. Additionally, the findings are tunneling effects enhanced by sulfuric acid, which may be wide applications in reaction kinetics of gas-phase reactions.

Abstract:At the air-water interface, many reactions are accelerated, sometimes by several orders of magnitude. This phenomenon has proved to be particularly important in water microdroplets, where the spontaneous oxidation of many species stable in bulk has been experimentally demonstrated. Different theories have been proposed to explain this finding, but it is currently believed that the role of interfacial electric fields is key. In this work, we have carried out a quantum chemistry study aimed at shedding some light on this question. We have studied two prototypical processes in which a hydroxide anion transfers its excess electron to either the water environment or a dioxygen molecule. To model the interface, we use a cluster of 21 water molecules immersed in an electric field, and we examine the energetics of the studied reactions as a function of field magnitude. Our results reveal that electric fields close to those estimated for the neat air-water interface (~0.15 V×Å-1) have a moderate effect on the reaction energetics and that much stronger fields (>1 V×Å-1) are required to get spontaneous electron transfer. Therefore, the study suggests that additional factors such as an excess charge in microdroplets need to be considered for explaining the experimental observations.
