Abstract:In this study, a generalized three-degree-of-freedom (3-DoF) analytical model is formulated to predict linear aerodynamic instabilities of a prism under quasi-steady (QS) conditions. The prism is assumed to possess a generic cross-section exposed to turbulent wind flow. The 3-DoFs encompass two orthogonal horizontal directions and rotation about the prism body axis. Inertial coupling is considered to account for the non-coincidence of the mass center and the rotation center. The aerodynamic force coefficients-drag, lift, and moment-depend on the Reynolds number based on relative flow velocity, angle of attack, and the angle between the wind and the cable. Aerodynamic forces are linearized with respect to the static equilibrium configuration and mean wind velocity. Routh-Hurwitz and Lienard and Chipart criteria are used in the eigenvalue problem, yielding an analytical solution for instabilities in galloping and static divergence types. Additionally, the minimum structural damping and stiffness required to prevent these instabilities are numerically determined. The proposed 3-DoF instability model is subsequently applied to a conductor with ice accretion and a full-scale dry inclined cable. In comparison to existing models, the developed model demonstrates superior prediction accuracy for unstable regions compared with results in wind tunnel tests.

Abstract:In this paper, the bending and stretching elastic potential energies are considered in calculating Hamilton actuating quantity. In the meantime, the mass density of the filament and the friction force are also considered. The normal mode analysis yields eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. In the dynamical equation of polymer chains without a Brownian force, two cases of ζ2−4ρξn>0 and ζ2−4ρξn<0 are taken into account, where ρ is the linear mass density of the filament, ζ is the friction constant per unit length of the filament, and ξn is the eigenvalue. We discuss the dependence of the relaxation times on the persistence length. In the flexible limit, we obtain the relaxation times of the Rouse model. In the stiff-chain case, the relaxation times τn are proportional to [L/(2n−1)]4.
Buckling instability in a chain of sticky bubbles

Abstract:A slender object undergoing an axial compression will buckle to alleviate the stress. Typically the morphology of the deformed object depends on the bending stiffness for solids, or the viscoelastic properties for liquid threads. We study a chain of uniform sticky air bubbles that rise due to buoyancy through an aqueous bath. A buckling instability of the bubble chain with a characteristic wavelength is observed. If a chain of bubbles is produced faster than it is able to rise, the dominance of viscous drag over buoyancy results in a compressive stress that is alleviated by buckling the bubble chain. Using low Reynolds number hydrodynamics, we predict the critical buckling speed, the terminal speed of a buckled chain, and the geometry of the buckles.

Abstract:Flexible lightweight arched structures are finding increasing use as components in smart engineering applications. Such structures are prone to various types of instability under moving transverse loads. Here, we study deformation and vibration of a hinged circular arch under a uniformly moving point load using geometrically-exact rod theory to allow for large pre- and post-buckling deformations. We first consider the quasi-statics problem, without inertia. We find that for arches with relatively large opening angle ( ∼ 160°) a sufficiently large traversing load will induce an out-of-plane flopping instability, instead of the in-plane collapse (snap-through) that dominates failure of arches with smaller opening angle. In a subsequent dynamics study, with full account of inertia, we then explore the effect of the speed of the load on this lateral buckling. We find speed to have a delaying (or even suppressing) effect on the onset of three-dimensional bending–torsional vibrations and instability. Based on numerical computations we propose a power law describing this effect. Our results highlight the role of inertia in the onset of elastic instability.

Abstract:The nonlinear atomistic interactions usually involve softening behavior. Instability resulting directly from this softening are called the material instability, while those unrelated to this softening are called the structural instability. We use the finite-deformation shell theory based on the interatomic potential to show that the tension instability of single-wall carbon nanotubes is the material instability, while the compression and torsion instabilities are structural instability.

Abstract:We study the dynamical response of a diatomic periodic chain of rotors coupled by springs, whose unit cell breaks spatial inversion symmetry. In the continuum description, we derive a nonlinear field theory which admits topological kinks and antikinks as nonlinear excitations but where a topological boundary term breaks the symmetry between the two and energetically favors the kink configuration. Using a cobweb plot, we develop a fixed-point analysis for the kink motion and demonstrate that kinks propagate without the Peierls-Nabarro potential energy barrier typically associated with lattice models. Using continuum elasticity theory, we trace the absence of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier for the kink motion to the topological boundary term which ensures that only the kink configuration, and not the antikink, costs zero potential energy. Further, we study the eigenmodes around the kink and antikink configurations using a tangent stiffness matrix approach appropriate for pre-stressed structures to explicitly show how the usual energy degeneracy between the two no longer holds. We show how the kink-antikink asymmetry also manifests in the way these nonlinear excitations interact with impurities introduced in the chain as disorder in the spring stiffness. Finally, we discuss the effect of impurities in the (bond) spring length and build prototypes based on simple linkages that verify our predictions.

Abstract:Based on the theory of shape instability and diffusive instability for single bubbles, we have studied the instability of an individual bubble in a bubble chain and found that its stable area enlarges the narrower the distance between bubbles. The spatial stability of the bubble chain is due to the secondary Bjerknes force between bubbles. Numerical calculations show the tension of the bubble chain varies with bubble distance and maxima appear at certain distances which could correspond to the stable states of the bubble chain.

Abstract:Arrays of bistable elements have been studied extensively in the last two decades due to their relevance to a wide range of physical phenomena and engineering applications, from rate-independent hysteresis to multi-stable metamaterials and soft robotics. Here, we study, theoretically and experimentally, an important extension of the bistable-chain model that has been largely overlooked, namely a discrete chain of bistable elements that is supported by a linear-elastic foundation. Focus is put on equilibrium configurations and their stability, from which the sequence of phase-transition events and the overall force-displacement relation are obtained. In addition, we study the influence of each of the bistable parameters and the stiffness of the elastic foundation on the overall behavior. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived by approximating the bistable behavior with a trilinear force-displacement relation. These are later validated numerically and experimentally. Our analysis shows that the sequence of phase transition may involve two fundamentally different scenarios, depending on the system parameters. The first scenario is characterized by the propagation of a single phase boundary associated with an ordered sequence of phase transitions, while the second involves the formation of multiple phase boundaries and a disordered sequence of transition events. Also, by identifying that the displacements of the chain are related through a linear recursive sequence, we show that, in some particular cases, the relevant expressions can be conveniently reduced to formulas associated with the celebrated Lucas or Fibonacci sequences, and the physical interpretation of these solutions is discussed.

Entropic Tightening of Vibrated Chains

Abstract:We investigate experimentally the distribution of configurations of a ring with an elementary topological constraint, a ``figure-8'' twist. Using vibrated granular chains, which permit controlled preparation and direct observation of such a constraint, we show that configurations where one of the loops is tight and the second is large are strongly preferred. This agrees with recent predictions for equilibrium properties of topologically-constrained polymers. However, the dynamics of the tightening process weakly violate detailed balance, a signature of the nonequilibrium nature of this system.

Which part of a chain breaks

Abstract:This work investigates the dynamics of a one-dimensional homogeneous harmonic chain on a horizontal table. One end is anchored to a wall, the other (free) end is pulled by external force. A Green's function is derived to calculate the response to a generic pulling force. As an example, I assume that the magnitude of the pulling force increases with time at a uniform rate $\beta$. If the number of beads and springs used to model the chain is large, the extension of each spring takes a simple closed form, which is a piecewise-linear function of time. Under an additional assumption that a spring breaks when its extension exceeds a certain threshold, results show that for large $\beta$ the spring breaks near the pulling end, whereas the breaking point can be located close to the wall by choosing small $\beta$. More precisely, the breaking point moves back and forth along the chain as $\beta$ decreases, which has been called "anomalous" breaking in the context of the pull-or-jerk experiment. Although the experiment has been explained in terms of inertia, its meaning can be fully captured by discussing the competition between intrinsic and extrinsic time scales of forced oscillation.

Abstract:In this fluid dynamics video we explore an array of different possible dynamics for a flexible filament sedimenting in a viscous fluid. The time-dependent shapes and trajectories of the filament are determined analytically and numerically by balancing viscous, elastic and gravitational forces in a slender-body theory for zero-Reynolds number flows. The dynamics are characterized by a single dimensionless elasto-gravitation number. The video shows the process of filament relaxation and reorientation, the formation of particle clouds, and finally a buckling instability.
Buckling Force Chains In Dense Granular Assemblies: Physical And Numerical Experiments

Abstract:This paper focuses on the columnar particle structures known as force chains, and their failure via buckling. The local kinematics and frictional dissipation of this failure mechanism are examined quantitatively for dense, cohesionless granular assemblies, under quasistatic and strain-controlled compression. Data are taken from a physical experiment and a discrete element simulation of bidisperse assemblies of circular particles undergoing shear banding. Particular attention is paid to the deformation and dissipation within a class of particle clusters, each composed of a buckled force chain segment and its laterally supporting neighbours. These particle clusters are found to be confined to the shear band. We establish measures of their local micropolar deformation, including nonaffine deformation, and the evolution of these quantities with strain. Temporally and spatially, the kinematics of this class of particles exhibits trends consistent with the particle motions that form the major contributors to deformation on the mesoscopic and macroscopic scales. The predominant mode of contact failure in a force chain undergoing buckling, and in the contacts with and within its laterally supporting neighbours, is frictional rolling. Rolling friction thus serves as one of, if not the main control valve for the energy flow from the force chain to its surrounding medium.

Abstract:Motivated by observations of snap-through phenomena in buckled elastic strips subject to clamping and lateral end translations, we experimentally explore the multi-stability and bifurcations of thin bands of various widths and compare these results with numerical continuation of a perfectly anisotropic Kirchhoff rod. Our choice of boundary conditions is not easily satisfied by the anisotropic structures, forcing a cooperation between bending and twisting deformations. We find that, despite clear physical differences between rods and strips, a naive Kirchhoff model works surprisingly well as an organizing framework for the experimental observations. In the context of this model, we observe that anisotropy creates new states and alters the connectivity between existing states. Our results are a preliminary look at relatively unstudied boundary conditions for rods and strips that may arise in a variety of engineering applications, and may guide the avoidance of jump phenomena in such settings. We also briefly comment on the limitations of current strip models.

Abstract:The mechanism of kink instability observed in short DNA circles [W. Han et al., Nature (London) 386, 563 (1997)] has been analyzed based on the model of chiral elasticity for helical fibers proposed by Helfrich [Langmuir 7, 567 (1991)]. It is shown theoretically that the circle is the planar solution of the equilibrium shape equations derived within this model and its stability is studied as the function of the elastic moduli of DNA. It is found that above some thresholds of the chiral modulus, k(3), the circular DNA can be deformed into elliptical, triangular, square, or other polygonal shapes. The predicted shape transformation is found in good agreement with the above kink instability observed in DNA. [S1063-651X(98)03412-6].
At the end of a moving string

Abstract:One cannot pull an open, curved string along itself. This fact is clearly reflected in the unwrapping motion of a string or chain as it is dragged around an object, and implies strong consequences for slender structures in passive locomotion, whether industrial cables and sheets or the ribbons of rhythmic gymnastics. We address a basic problem in the dynamics of flexible bodies, namely the solution of the string equations with a free boundary. This system is the backbone of many fluid-structure interactions, and also a model problem for thin structures where geometric nonlinearities cannot be ignored. We consider planar dynamics under the restriction that the spatially-dependent stress profile in the string is time-independent, which results in a conservation law form for the equations. We find a new exact solution whose range of validity is time-dependent, limited to greater than a distance scaling as $t^{\frac4/3}$ from the free end. The remainder of the distance is covered by splicing to another exact solution for a straight string, which introduces an error into the combined solution. The splicing also implies a $t^{-\frac2/3}$ singularity in acceleration, apparently corresponding to a whipping motion of the vanishing straight segment.

Dynamics of Ball-Chains and Very Elastic Fibres Settling under Gravity in a Viscous Fluid

Abstract:We study experimentally the dynamics of one and two ball-chains settling under gravity in a very viscous fluid at a Reynolds number much smaller than unity. We demonstrate that single ball-chains in most cases do not tend to be planar and often rotate, not keeping the ends at the same horizontal level. Shorter ball-chains usually form shapes resembling distorted U, and longer ones in the early stage of the evolution form a shape resembling distorted W, and later deform non-symmetrically and significantly out of plane. This behaviour is reproduced in our numerical simulations for a single very elastic filament, with the use of the bead model and multipole expansion of the Stokes equations, corrected for lubrication and implemented in the precise Hydromultipole numerical codes. In our experiments, two ball-chains, initially one above the other, later move away or approach each other, for a larger or smaller initial distance, respectively.

Abstract:Mechanical instabilities can be exploited to design innovative structures, able to change their shape in the presence of external stimuli. In this work, we derive a mathematical model of an elastic beam subjected to an axial force and constrained to smoothly slide along a rigid support, where the distance between the rod midline and the constraint is fixed and finite. Using both theoretical and computational techniques, we characterize the bifurcations of such a mechanical system, in which the axial force and the natural curvature of the beam are used as control parameters. We show that, in the presence of a straight support, the rod can deform into shapes exhibiting helices and perversions, namely transition zones connecting together two helices with opposite chirality. The mathematical predictions of the proposed model are also compared with some experiments, showing a good quantitative agreement. In particular, we find that the buckled configurations may exhibit multiple perversions and we propose a possible explanation for this phenomenon based on the energy landscape of the mechanical system.

Abstract:Traditional models of wormlike chains in shear flows at finite temperature approximate the equation of motion via finite difference discretization (bead and rod models). We introduce here a new method based on a spectral representation in terms of the natural eigenfunctions. This formulation separates tumbling and bending dynamics, clearly showing their interrelation, naturally orders the bending dynamics according to the characteristic decay rate of its modes, and displays coupling among bending modes in a general flow. This hierarchy naturally yields a low dimensional stochastic dynamical system which recovers and extends previous numerical results and which leads to a fast and efficient numerical method for studying the stochastic nonlinear dynamics of semiflexible polymers in general flows. This formulation will be useful for studying other physical systems described by constrained stochastic partial differential equations.

Abstract:The Slinky is a well-known example of a highly flexible helical spring, exhibiting large, geometrically nonlinear deformations from minimal applied forces. By considering it as a system of coils that act to resist axial, shearing, and rotational deformations, we develop a discretized model to predict the equilibrium configurations of a Slinky via the minimization of its potential energy. Careful consideration of the contact between coils enables this procedure to accurately describe the shape and stability of the Slinky under different modes of deformation. In addition, we provide simple geometric and material relations that describe a scaling of the general behavior of flexible, helical springs.

Abstract:The capillary-induced structural instability of an elastic circular tube partially filled by a liquid is studied by combining theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis shows that, associated with the instability, there is a well-defined length scale (elasto-capillary length), which exhibits a scaling relationship with the characteristic length of the tube, regardless of the interaction details. We validate this scaling relationship for a carbon nanotube partially filled by liquid iron. The capillary-induced structural transformation could have potential applications for nano-devices.
