Abstract:With the increasing number of students studying abroad and the majority of them choosing countries where English is the primary language, the anxiety of international school students learning English as a second foreign language (ESL) has drawn attention. Based on the factors that affect anxiety mentioned in most articles, this paper selects family atmosphere, school environment and self-efficacy as three studied factors, and makes chart analysis of the views of students with different anxiety states on the above three factors. The study found that people with low anxiety have higher English standardized scores than those with moderate and high anxiety. Parents' English level has some influences on their kids’ English performances, but whether they communicate with their kids using English in daily life has little influence on English learning. Also, there is no significant difference in whether the help provided by the school was beneficial for different anxious students. Finally, students with moderate anxiety have the highest sense of self-efficacy, even higher than students with highest anxiety. This study helps individual international students deeply understand the relationship between anxiety and ESL performance and the role of parents and schools, which can help teachers, parents and schools make better teaching methods.
Exploring Anxiety at Home, School, and in the Community Through Self‐Report From Children on the Autism Spectrum

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Research investigating anxiety in children on the autism spectrum usually reports caregiver rather than self‐report perspectives. This study aimed to document children's own descriptions of their anxiety symptomatology by combining profiles on a standardized autism‐specific self‐report measure of anxiety (ASC‐ASD‐C) with the answers from closed‐ and open‐answer questions about anxiety across home, school, and community settings. Across the sample of 113 children on the spectrum aged 6–14 years, the two most frequently endorsed items on the ASC‐ASD‐C were from the Uncertainty and Performance Anxiety subscales, and the least endorsed were both from the Anxious Arousal subscale. Almost all (96.5%) of the children on the spectrum reported experiencing anxiety in at least one setting, with 40.7% reporting anxiety in all three contexts (home, school, and community). Approximately half of the sample felt their anxiety goes unrecognized by others at school and almost 60% felt it was unrecognized by others when out in the community. The proportion of children reporting having someone to help reduce their anxiety differed across home (86%), school (76%), and community (45%) settings. The results suggest only 40–50% of children feel that others are able to recognize their anxiety at school and when out in the community, suggesting that more training is needed to help adults in these settings to recognize and support anxiety.</p></section>

Mothers’ and Fathers’ Worry and Over-Control: One Step Closer to Understanding Early Adolescent Social Anxiety

Abstract:This study investigated the links between parental worry, parental over-control and adolescent social anxiety in parent-adolescent dyads. Using a longitudinal sample of adolescents (Mage = 14.28) and their parents (224 mother–daughter, 234 mother–son, 51 father–daughter, and 47 father–son dyads), comparisons were conducted using cross-lagged path models across two time points. We used adolescent reports of social anxiety and feelings of being overly controlled by parents, and mother and father self-reports of worries. Our results show that boys’ social anxiety predicted higher perceived parental overcontrol, whereas girls’ social anxiety predicted higher paternal worry over time. In addition, girls’ reports of feeling overly controlled by parents predicted higher maternal worry but lower paternal worry over time. For boys, feeling overly controlled predicted less social anxiety instead. The study illustrates how mothers and fathers might differ in their behaviors and concerns regarding their children’s social anxiety and feelings of overcontrol.

Abstract:Anxiety is conceptualized as a state of negative emotional arousal that is accompanied by concern about future threat. The purpose of this meta-analytic review was to evaluate the evidence of associations between emotional competence and anxiety by examining how specific emotional competence domains (emotion recognition, emotion expression, emotion awareness, emotion understanding, acceptance of emotion, emotional self-efficacy, sympathetic/empathic responses to others’ emotions, recognition of how emotion communication and self-presentation affect relationships, and emotion regulatory processes) relate to anxiety in childhood and adolescence. A total of 185 studies were included in a series of meta-analyses (N’s ranged from 573 to 25,711). Results showed that anxious youth are less effective at expressing (r = −0.15) and understanding emotions (r = −0.20), less aware of (r = −0.28) and less accepting of their own emotions (r = −0.49), and report less emotional self-efficacy (r = −0.36). More anxious children use more support-seeking coping strategies (r = 0.07) and are more likely to use less adaptive coping strategies including avoidant coping (r = 0.18), externalizing (r = 0.18), and maladaptive cognitive coping (r = 0.34). Emotion acceptance and awareness, emotional self-efficacy, and maladaptive cognitive coping yielded the largest effect sizes. Some effects varied with children’s age. The findings inform intervention and treatment programs of anxiety in youth and identify several areas for future research.

Abstract:There are growing concerns about the impact of digital technologies on children's emotional well-being, particularly regarding fear, anxiety, and depression. The 2 mental health categories of anxiety and depression will be discussed together because there is significant symptom overlap and comorbidity. Early research has explored the impact of traditional media (eg, television, movies) on children's acute fears, which can result in anxieties and related sleep disturbances that are difficult to remedy. More recent research deals with the interactive nature of newer media, especially social media, and their impacts on anxiety and depression. Key topics of inquiry include the following: anxiety and depression associated with technology-based negative social comparison, anxiety resulting from lack of emotion-regulation skills because of substituted digital media use, social anxiety from avoidance of social interaction because of substituted digital media use, anxiety because of worries about being inadequately connected, and anxiety, depression, and suicide as the result of cyberbullying and related behavior. A growing body of research confirms the relationship between digital media and depression. Although there is evidence that greater electronic media use is associated with depressive symptoms, there is also evidence that the social nature of digital communication may be harnessed in some situations to improve mood and to promote health-enhancing strategies. Much more research is needed to explore these possibilities.
Evidence of Delayed, Recursive Benefits of Self-Affirmation on Anxiety in Socially Anxious University Students

Abstract:Introduction: Persons with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often experience social interactions as threatening and commonly avoid them or perform poorly in them (Asher et al., 2017). Self-affirmation is an intervention shown to help individuals engage effectively in situations they perceive as threatening (Sherman & Hartson, 2011). We hypothesized that self-affirmation would allow socially anxious individuals to participate in more social activities, do so more effectively, and with less stress and anxiety. Methods: Following completion of baseline measures, 75 socially anxious university students were randomly assigned to complete a self-affirming or control writing task. They subsequently completed the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups (TSST-G), and received SAD psychoeducation designed to promote social engagement over the coming month, after which they were reassessed on baseline measures of social anxiety. Results Self-affirmation demonstrated no benefit at the time of engagement in the TSST-G. However, at follow-up, self-affirmed students reported significantly less discomfort, anxiety, and distress related to a variety of social behaviors as well as more engagement in those behaviors, relative to baseline, compared with non-affirmed students. Moreover, significantly more affirmed than non-affirmed participants reported clinically significant reductions in symptoms of SAD at follow-up. Discussion These results help to broaden our conceptualization of self-affirmation and provide support for its potential utility in treatment for those with SAD.

Abstract:This exploratory study examines cognitive risk factors, anxiety sensitivity, and positive and negative affect, as related to the development of anxiety and depression. In a mailed survey, adolescents completed the Child Anxiety Sensitivity Index and the Positive and Negative Affectivity Scale. Previous research utilized the broad and unified variable of anxiety sensitivity as a predictor of anxiety. In this study, we separate and examine the four specific factors of anxiety sensitivity: mental incapacitation concerns, social concerns, disease concerns, and unsteady concerns, and relate it to specific anxiety disorders and depression. Results indicate good convergent validity and improved divergent validity when utilizing the four factors of anxiety sensitivity as compared to using it as one construct. Results also suggest: (1) OCD and GAD share numerous similarities and (2) the importance of the role of negative affectivity in anxiety and depression. Being aware of the components of anxiety sensitivity and how they relate to specific anxiety disorders can help a social worker when rendering a diagnosis.

Abstract:The article aims to identify adolescent anxiety as a personal trait, one of the most dangerous consequences of an overprotective parenting style in modern conditions. The methodological basis of the study involves a set of diagnostic methods (diagnosis of parental attitudes, diagnosis of personality motivation for success, parental attitude research instrument) using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, correlation and regression analysis, and other methods of mathematical statistics. The empirical research has found that excessive care, especially in mother-dominant families, leads to pronounced overprotective. The authors of this article found a direct correlation between this parenting style and the levels of anxiety and motivation in adolescents (an inverse correlation between anxiety level and motivation for success was found). High personal anxiety was recorded in 33% of adolescents, which indicated a negative experience of suffering anxiety. The practical value of this article is due to an integrated approach to the tasks of correctional psychology, which should consider both the personal predisposition to anxiety in adolescents and their early experiences of anxiety. At the same time, educational work with parents and psychological methods to reduce adolescent anxiety are equally important. The involvement of wartime contexts in the perception of the issue raised makes this article original.

Abstract:Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Ahead of Print. The present study sought to examine the underlying mechanisms through which overprotective parenting relates to social anxiety symptoms in adolescents. Specifically, we tested whether the adolescents' emotion regulation strategies of dysregulation, suppression, and integration, played an intervening role in the association between perceived maternal and paternal overprotection and social anxiety symptoms in adolescents. A sample of 278 Swiss adolescents filled out questionnaires assessing perceived overprotective parenting, social anxiety symptoms and emotion regulation. Results indicated that perceived overprotective parenting was significantly associated with adolescents' social anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, structural equation modeling analyses indicated that emotional dysregulation, in particular, intervenes in the association between both maternal and paternal overprotection and social anxiety. These findings highlight emotion regulation difficulties as a potential mechanism underlying the association between parental overprotection and social anxiety, suggesting that adolescents' maladaptive emotion regulation strategies as well as overprotecting parenting could be targeted when treating social anxiety symptoms.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Dementia-related anxiety (DRA) is the fear or anxiety about a current or future diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia. The purpose of the present study was to examine management of DRA. Methods and design: In semi-structured qualitative interviews, 50 community-dwelling adults (58-89 years old, M = 70.80, SD = 6.02) without dementia diagnoses reflected on their thoughts and feelings about dementia. A reflexive inductive thematic approach was used to examine ways people managed DRA. Results: We identified five themes related to managing DRA: monitoring cognitive status (e.g., self-monitoring or objective assessment); active coping strategies (e.g., using external reminders, normalizing age-related change); interpersonal relationships and support (e.g., anticipating benefit of support from others); planning and preparing for potential outcomes (e.g., securing power of attorney, saying goodbyes); and personal responsibility to manage risk or accept diagnosis (e.g., lifestyle factors to reduce dementia risk, thereby reducing risk for burdening others). Conclusions: Findings suggest internal and external means for coping with DRA that are likely to vary in degrees of usefulness. We consider findings within the context of relevant, established theories, attending to potential clinical interventions for individuals experiencing DRA.
Too Anxious to Speak: Assessing the Impact of Social Anxiety on High School Students’ Self-Esteem, Academic Performance, and Coping Strategies

Abstract:Social anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental health issues students experience. It is the excessive worry on negative opinions about oneself from people. This study analyzes relative impacts of social anxiety on high school students' academic performance and self-esteem, and evaluates what stimulates social anxiety problems among high school students and how they overcome it. A phenomenological approach was utilized to examine experiences of 12 high school students from Central Luzon State University, Philippines. Through Social Cognitive Theory, the researchers explored the cognitive, social, and behavioral components that contributed to effects of social anxiety on high school students' self-esteem, academic performance, and coping strategies. Data were gathered through semi-structured audio-recorded interviews and were analyzed thematically. Results revealed various factors, including environmental, negative experiences, and inner conflicts that caused social anxiety. Students suffering from social anxiety struggle academically while building relationships with peers as well. Overcoming social anxiety is challenging and effective coping strategy helps reduce students' anxiety. Collectively, social anxiety significantly impacts academic performance, self-esteem, and coping strategies.. This study would contribute to literature and the educational field as it could serve as a guide to what actions should be implemented to improve the mental health of high school students through better guidance on coping strategies, which was revealed to be lacking. Therefore, school-based anxiety treatments, as well as socio-academic programs, must be concretized to develop social skills and succeed in future endeavors. The correlates and consequences of early appearing social anxiety in young children

Abstract:Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and being negatively evaluated by others. Most previous studies of childhood social anxiety have employed clinical samples of children aged 10 years and older. The current study explored the correlates of social anxiety in an unselected sample of young children. Participants were n =178 elementary school children in grade 2 (aged 7–8 years). Children were individually administered the Social Anxiety Scale for Children-Revised (SASC-R), as well as measures of socio-emotional adjustment. Teachers completed measures of children's socio-emotional problems and school adjustment. Results indicated that social anxiety was positively associated with self-reported loneliness, school avoidance, and internalizing coping, and negatively related to school liking. However, social anxiety was mostly unrelated to teacher-rated outcomes. Findings are discussed in terms of use of the SASC-R for this type of population and reasons for the disparity between child and teacher reports of adjustment outcomes.

Anxiety in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: behavioural phenotypes and environmental factors

Abstract:Background: Anxiety is the most prevalent comorbidity among children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet little is known about the associated risk factors. Methods: In a heterogenous cohort of children aged 5-18 years old (n = 262, 42% ASD), participants and their parents completed standardized questionnaires to assess anxiety, ASD symptom severity, inattention/hyperactivity, emotional problems, depressive symptoms, parental styles and stress, and demographic factors. Results: An artificial neural network analysis using a self-organizing map, a statistical technique used to cluster large datasets, revealed 3 distinct anxiety profiles: low (n = 114, 5% ASD), moderate (n = 70, 64% ASD) and high (n = 78, 96% ASD) anxiety. A recursive feature elimination analysis revealed that depression and peer problems contributed the most to differences between the anxiety profiles. Difficulties with peers in individuals with ASD who experience anxiety may be related to challenges with social competence and this may heighten depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Findings highlight the importance of assessing depressive symptoms in children and adolescents with ASD who experience anxiety. Identifying anxiety profiles among children and adolescents with ASD may prove beneficial in clinical practice by facilitating the development of tailored interventions that aid in managing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, strengthening social communication skills may improve peer relationships and could aid in managing depressive symptoms among children and adolescents with ASD who experience anxiety.

Abstract:Anxiety sensitivity (AS), namely the fear of anxiety symptoms, has been described as a precursor of sub-threshold anxiety levels. <a href="#B94">Sexton et al. (2003)</a> posited that increased AS would arise from an elevated neuroticism and that both would act as vulnerability factors for panic disorder (PD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms. Accordingly, this study aimed to (1) evaluate the applicability of this model to a pediatric population and (2) examine the influences of the other Big-Five personality dimensions on the four lower-order dimensions of AS (cognitive, physical, control, and physical) and on social phobia (SP), separation anxiety disorder (SAD) and depression symptoms. 200 children (104 girls) aged between 8 and 12 years old (mean age = 132.52 months, <i>SD</i> = 14.5) completed <i>the Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index</i> (<a href="#B95">Silverman et al., 1991</a>), <i>the Big Five Questionnaire for Children</i> (<a href="#B7">Barbaranelli et al., 2003</a>), and <i>the Revised's Children Anxiety and Depression Scale</i> (<a href="#B26">Chorpita et al., 2000</a>). Regression analyses confirmed that AS and neuroticism together significantly predicted the presence of PD, OCD, and GAD symptoms but also SP, SAD, and depression symptoms. Moreover, neuroticism interacted with extraversion, conscientiousness and agreeableness to significantly predict SP, GAD, and depression. Surprisingly, the global AS score was only predicted by agreeableness, while AS dimensions also specifically related to openness. Finally, AS dimensions did not predict the presence of specific anxiety symptoms. To conclude, the predicting model of anxiety symptoms in children sets neuroticism and AS on the same level, with an unexpected influence of agreeableness on AS, raising the importance of other trait-like factors in the definition of such models. Moreover, AS should be considered as a unitary construct when predicting the presence of anxiety symptoms in children. Future interventions must consider these associations to help children detect and recognize the symptoms of their anxiety and help them to interpret them correctly.

Adolescent Girls II Background Factors in Anxiety and Depressive States

Abstract:Background This study investigated the prevalence and background variables associated with anxiety and depressive disorders occurring in a community population of older teenage girls. Method Girls aged 15–20 years ( n = 529) whose names were drawn from general practitioner age/sex registers completed self-report Great Ormond Street Mood Questionnaires. From this sample, 143 girls (69 with high self-report scores and 74 controls) were intensively interviewed. Information was obtained on confiding/supportive relationships, family arguments and rows, quality of marital relationship, and degree of parental control. Psychiatric state was assessed by use of the Clinical Interview Schedule to provide a Total Weighted Score. A modified form of the Bedford Life Events and Difficulties Schedule was applied. Results The estimated one-year prevalence rate for psychiatric disorder was 18.9%, and 16.9% for depression and anxiety disorders. Using a logit analysis, it was shown that maternal distress ( P < 0.02) and the quality of the mother's marriage ( P < 0.02) were independently associated with the presence of depression and anxiety disorders. Conclusions About 17% of girls in a community sample living at home showed a depression or anxiety disorder. Even in late adolescence, the presence of a mood disorder is closely linked to the quality of family relationships within the home.

Abstract:As time goes by, the development of science and technology gives humans more opportunities to network. More and more teenagers are using social media platforms. At the same time, the term facial anxiety has become a hot topic, with a large number of young people suffering from this problem. Transitional facial anxiety may lead to some psychological problems. To explore this topic, the study will explore the relationship between social media and face anxiety. In this study, questionnaires were distributed to major social platforms to collect results. The participants were 401 teenagers aged 13 to 19. The study found that teens who used social media were more likely to have facial anxiety, girls were more likely to have facial anxiety, the amount of time spent on social media did not affect facial anxiety, and teens who used Little Red books tended to have higher facial anxiety.

Abstract:Adolescent anxiety disorder is a prevalent psychological disorder that has a substantial impact on the mental health and total development of adolescents. This study reviews and investigates the definition, characteristics, and the two essential etiological components of anxiety disorders in adolescents, namely social media and home environment. This is achieved by describing and analyzing prior research pertaining to anxiety disorders and adolescent mental health. The paper begins by defining adolescent anxiety disorder, noting that it is primarily characterized by excessive concern and tension, which is frequently accompanied by physical discomfort and emotional distress. Adolescents may exhibit social distress, avoidance behaviors, and academic difficulties that impair their daily functioning and learning. As a significant aspect of adolescents' existence, social media has a significant effect on their anxiety levels. Social anxiety, body image anxiety, and other stressors brought on by social media may aggravate anxiety symptoms. Moreover, online violence and negative remarks may have a negative effect on adolescents' mental health. Another crucial etiologic factor is the family environment. Instability, conflict, and tension in the home may increase the risk of adolescents developing anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders have also been linked to parental styles and economic circumstances. Although numerous scientific studies have been conducted on adolescents and anxiety disorders, additional research is required to shed light on the progression of mental health disorders in adolescents and bring them to the attention of society.

Abstract:Isn't heightened awareness always a good thing? Isn't education always a good thing? More specifically, isn't it logical to assume that training in emotion management is beneficial for all children and youth? Several writers (e.g. Barry, Citation 2024 ) have questioned these assumptions, especially critiquing school-based interventions that heighten young people's awareness of depression and anxiety, causing them to interpret mild ups and downs as symptoms of mental disorder . British psychologist Lucy Foulkes and Australian psychologist Jack Andrews proposed a "prevalence inflation hypothesis" which asserts that heightening awareness of mental disorders can lead to recognition (a beneficial outcome—if it results in treatment that is needed) or overinterpretation of everyday distress (a negative outcome, wherein labeling oneself as anxious or depressed can produce a sense of powerlessness over the disorder) (Foulkes & Andrews, Citation 2023 ). Youth who perceive their distressful symptoms as a biological disorder may not perceive they can attain control and may engage in maladaptive catastrophizing or ruminating (Ahuvia et al., Citation 2024 ).
