Abstract:During muscle contraction, not only are the fascicles shortening but also the pennation angle changes, which leads to a faster contraction of the muscle than of its fascicles. This phenomenon is called muscle gearing, and it has a direct influence on the force output of the muscle. There are few studies showing pennation angle changes during isometric and concentric contractions for different contraction intensities and muscle lengths. Therefore, the aim was to determine these influences over a wide range of contraction intensities and ankle joint angles for human triceps surae. Additionally, the influence of contraction intensity and ankle joint angle on muscle gearing was evaluated. Ten sport students performed concentric and isometric contractions with intensities between 0 and 90% of the maximum voluntary contraction and ankle joint angles from 50° to 120°. During these contractions, the m. gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis and the m. soleus were recorded via ultrasound imaging. A nonlinear relationship between fascicle length and pennation angle was discovered, which can be described with a quadratic fit for each of the muscles during isometric contraction. A nearly identical relationship was detected during dynamic contraction. The muscle gearing increased almost linearly with contraction intensity and ankle joint angle.

Abstract:The shape of skeletal muscle varies remarkably—with important implications for locomotor performance. In many muscles, the fibres are arranged at an angle relative to the tendons’ line of action, termed the pennation angle. These pennate muscles allow more sarcomeres to be packed side by side, enabling the muscle to generate higher maximum forces for a given muscle size. Historically, the physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) has been used to capture both the size and arrangement of muscle fibres, and is one of the best predictors of a muscles capacity to produce force. However, the anatomical and mechanical implications of PCSA remain ambiguous as misinterpretations have limited our ability to understand the mechanical advantage of pennate muscle designs. We developed geometric models to resolve the mechanistic and functional impacts of pennation angle across a range of muscle shapes and sizes. Comparisons among model predictions and empirical data on human lower limb muscles demonstrated how a pennate arrangement of fibres allows muscles to produce up to six times more isometric force when compared with non-pennate muscles of the same volume. We show that in muscles much longer than thick, an optimal pennation angle exists at which isometric force is maximized. Using empirically informed geometric models we demonstrate the functional significance of a pennate muscle design and provide a new parameter, pennation mechanical advantage, which quantifies this performance improvement.

Abstract:Pennate muscles are defined by the architectural arrangement of their muscle fibers, which run at an angle to the primary axis of muscle shortening. Pennation angles can vary dynamically over the course of individual contractions, influencing the speed and distance of muscle shortening. Despite their relevance to muscle performance, the physical mechanisms that drive dynamic changes in pennation angle remain poorly understood. Muscle fibers bulge radially as they shorten, a consequence of maintaining a constant internal fluid volume, and we hypothesized that radial interactions between tightly packed muscle fibers are essential to dynamic pennation angle changes. To explore this, we built physical models of pennate muscles in which the radial distance between fiber-like actuators could be experimentally altered. Models were built from pennate arrays of McKibben actuators, a type of pneumatic actuator that forcefully shortens and bulges radially when inflated with compressed air. Consistent with past studies of biological muscle and engineered pennate actuators, we found that the magnitude of pennation angle change during contraction varied with load. Importantly, however, we found that pennation angle changes were also strongly influenced by the radial distance between neighboring McKibben actuators. Increasing the radial distance between neighboring actuators reduced pennation angle change during contraction and effectively eliminated variable responses to load. Radial interactions between muscle fibers are rarely considered in theoretical and experimental analyses of pennate muscle; however, these findings suggest that radial interactions between fibers drive pennation angle changes and influence pennate muscle performance. Our results provide insight into the fundamental mechanism underlying dynamic pennation angle changes in biological muscle and highlight design considerations that can inform the development of engineered pennate arrays.

Isometric training and long‐term adaptations: Effects of muscle length, intensity, and intent: A systematic review

Abstract:Isometric training is used in the rehabilitation and physical preparation of athletes, special populations, and the general public. However, little consensus exists regarding training guidelines for a variety of desired outcomes. Understanding the adaptive response to specific loading parameters would be of benefit to practitioners. The objective of this systematic review, therefore, was to detail the medium‐ to long‐term adaptations of different types of isometric training on morphological, neurological, and performance variables. Exploration of the relevant subject matter was performed through MEDLINE, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and CINAHL databases. English, full‐text, peer‐reviewed journal articles and unpublished doctoral dissertations investigating medium‐ to long‐term (≥3 weeks) adaptations to isometric training in humans were identified. These studies were evaluated further for methodological quality. Twenty‐six research outputs were reviewed. Isometric training at longer muscle lengths (0.86%‐1.69%/week, ES = 0.03‐0.09/week) produced greater muscular hypertrophy when compared to equal volumes of shorter muscle length training (0.08%‐0.83%/week, ES = −0.003 to 0.07/week). Ballistic intent resulted in greater neuromuscular activation (1.04%‐10.5%/week, ES = 0.02‐0.31/week vs 1.64%‐5.53%/week, ES = 0.03‐0.20/week) and rapid force production (1.2%‐13.4%/week, ES = 0.05‐0.61/week vs 1.01%‐8.13%/week, ES = 0.06‐0.22/week). Substantial improvements in muscular hypertrophy and maximal force production were reported regardless of training intensity. High‐intensity (≥70%) contractions are required for improving tendon structure and function. Additionally, long muscle length training results in greater transference to dynamic performance. Despite relatively few studies meeting the inclusion criteria, this review provides practitioners with insight into which isometric training variables (eg, joint angle, intensity, intent) to manipulate to achieve desired morphological and neuromuscular adaptations.

Abstract:PurposeTo analyse the muscle adaptations induced by two protocols of isometric training performed at different muscle lengths.MethodsTwenty-eight subjects were divided into three groups: one (K90) performed isometric training of the knee extensors at long muscle lengths (90° of knee flexion) for 8 weeks, and the second group (K50) at short muscle lengths (50°). The subjects of the third group acted as controls. Isokinetic dynamometry was utilized to analyse the net moment–angle relationship and vastus lateralis muscle thickness at three different locations, and pennation angles and fascicle length at 50 % of thigh length were measured at rest with ultrasonography.ResultsOnly subjects from K90 group showed significant increases in isokinetic strength (23.5 %, P < 0.001), while K50 group showed no increases in isokinetic strength: (10 %, P > 0.05). There was a shift in the angle of peak torque of the K90 group to longer muscle lengths (+14.6 %, P = 0.002) with greater increases in isokinetic strength, while the K50 angle shifted to shorter muscle lengths (−7.3 %, P = 0.039). Both training groups showed significant increases in muscle thickness, (K90 9–14 % vs. K50 5–9 %) but only K90 significantly increased their pennation angles (11.7 %, P = 0.038). Fascicle lengths remained unchanged.ConclusionsIsometric training at specific knee angles led to significant shifts of peak torque in the direction of the training muscle lengths. The greater strength gains and the architectural changes with training at long muscle lengths probably come from a combination of different factors, such as the different mechanical stresses placed upon the muscle–tendon complex.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we tested the hypotheses that (i) rate of force development (RFD) is correlated to muscle architecture and dynamics and that (ii) force–length–velocity properties limit knee extensor RFD. Twenty-one healthy participants were tested using ultrasonography and dynamometry. Vastus lateralis optimal fascicle length, fascicle velocity, change in pennation angle, change in muscle length, architectural gear ratio, and force were measured during rapid fixed-end contractions at 60° knee angle to determine RFD. Isokinetic and isometric tests were used to estimate individual force–length–velocity properties, to evaluate force production relative to maximal potential. Correlation analyses were performed between force and muscle parameters for the first three 50 ms intervals. RFD was not related to optimal fascicle length for any measured time interval, but RFD was positively correlated to fascicle shortening velocity during all intervals (r = 0.49–0.69). Except for the first interval, RFD was also related to trigonometry-based changes in muscle length and pennation angle (r = 0.45–0.63) but not to architectural gear ratio. Participants reached their individual vastus lateralis force–length–velocity potential (i.e. their theoretical maximal force at a given length and shortening velocity) after 62 ± 24 ms. Our results confirm the theoretical importance of fascicle shortening velocity and force–length–velocity properties for rapid force production and suggest a role of fascicle rotation.

The effect of small changes in rate of force development on muscle fascicle velocity and motor unit discharge behaviour

Abstract:Abstract When rate of force development is increased, neural drive increases. There is presently no accepted explanation for this effect. We propose and experimentally test the theory that a small increase in rate of force development increases medial gastrocnemius fascicle shortening velocity, reducing the muscle’s force-generating capacity, leading to active motor units being recruited at lower forces and with increased discharge frequencies. Participants produced plantar flexion torques at three different rates of force development (slow: 2% MVC/s, medium: 10% MVC/s, fast: 20% MVC/s). Ultrasound imaging showed that increased rate of force development was related to higher fascicle shortening velocity (0.4 ± 0.2 mm/s, 2.0 ± 0.9 mm/s, 4.1 ± 1.9 mm/s in slow, medium, fast, respectively). In separate experiments, medial gastrocnemius motor unit recruitment thresholds and discharge frequencies were measured using fine-wire electromyography (EMG), together with surface EMG. Recruitment thresholds were lower in the fast (12.8 ± 9.2% MVC) and medium (14.5 ± 9.9% MVC) conditions compared to the slow (18.2 ± 8.9% MVC) condition. The initial discharge frequency was lower in the slow (5.8 ± 3.1 Hz) than the fast (6.7 ± 1.4 Hz), but not than the medium (6.4 ± 2.4 Hz) condition. The surface EMG was greater in the fast (mean RMS: 0.029 ± 0.017 mV) compared to the slow condition (0.019 ± 0.013 mV). We propose that the increase in muscle fascicle shortening velocity reduces the force-generating capacity of the muscle, therefore requiring greater neural drive to generate the same forces.

Optimising the flow of mechanical energy in musculoskeletal systems through gearing

Abstract:Movement is integral to animal life, and most animal movement is actuated by the same engine: skeletal muscle. Muscle input is typically mediated by skeletal elements, resulting in musculoskeletal systems that are “geared”: at any instant, the muscle force and velocity are related to the output force and velocity only via a proportionality constant , the “mechanical advantage”. The functional analysis of such “simple machines” has traditionally centred around this instantaneous interpretation, such that a small vs large is thought to reflect a fast vs forceful system, respectively. But evidence is mounting that a complete analysis ought to also consider the mechanical energy output of a complete contraction. Here, we approach this task systematically, and use the theory of physiological similarity to study how gearing affects the flow of mechanical energy in a minimalist model of a musculoskeletal system. Gearing influences the flow of mechanical energy in two key ways: it can curtail muscle work output, because it determines the ratio between the characteristic muscle work and kinetic energy capacity; and it defines how each unit of muscle work is partitioned into different system energies, i. e. into kinetic vs. “parasitic” energy such as heat. As a consequence of both effects, delivering maximum work in minimum time and with maximum transmission efficiency generally requires a mechanical advantage of intermediate magnitude. This optimality condition can be expressed in terms of two dimensionless numbers, which reflect the key geometric, physiological, and physical properties of the interrogated musculoskeletal system, and the environment in which the contraction takes place. Illustrative application to exemplar musculoskeletal systems predicts plausible mechanical advantages in disparate biomechanical scenarios; yields a speculative explanation for why gearing is typically used to attenuate the instantaneous force output ( 1); and predicts how needs to vary systematically with animal size to optimise the delivery of mechanical energy, in superficial agreement with empirical observations. A many-to-one-mapping from musculoskeletal geometry to mechanical performance is identified, such that differences in alone do not provide a reliable indicator for specialisation for force vs speed—neither instantaneously, nor in terms of mechanical energy output. The energy framework presented here can be used to estimate an optimal mechanical advantage across variable muscle physiology, anatomy, mechanical environment and animal size, and so facilitates investigation of the extent to which selection has made efficient use of gearing as degree of freedom in musculoskeletal “design”.

Abstract:The evaluation of rate of force development during rapid contractions has recently become quite popular for characterising explosive strength of athletes, elderly individuals and patients. The main aims of this narrative review are to describe the neuromuscular determinants of rate of force development and to discuss various methodological considerations inherent to its evaluation for research and clinical purposes. Rate of force development (1) seems to be mainly determined by the capacity to produce maximal voluntary activation in the early phase of an explosive contraction (first 50–75 ms), particularly as a result of increased motor unit discharge rate; (2) can be improved by both explosive-type and heavy-resistance strength training in different subject populations, mainly through an improvement in rapid muscle activation; (3) is quite difficult to evaluate in a valid and reliable way. Therefore, we provide evidence-based practical recommendations for rational quantification of rate of force development in both laboratory and clinical settings.

Abstract:Hierarchical actuators are comprised of multiple individual actuator elements arranged into a system, resulting in improved and expanded performance. Natural muscle tissue is a complex and multi-level example of hierarchical actuation, with its hierarchy spanning from the micrometer to the centimeter scale. In addition to a hierarchical configuration, muscle tissue exists in varying geometric arrangements. Pennate muscle tissue, denoted by its characteristic fibers extending obliquely away from the muscle tissue line of action, leverages geometric complexity to transform the relationship between fiber inputs and muscle tissue outputs. In this paper, a bioinspired hierarchical pennate actuator is detailed. This work expands on previous pennate actuator studies by deriving constitutive force, contraction, and stiffness models for a general pennate actuator, where the constituent fibers can be constructed from any linear actuator. These models are experimentally validated by studying a pennate actuator with McKibben artificial muscles constituting the actuator fibers. McKibben artificial muscles are used because they have a high force-to-weight ratio and are inexpensive to construct, making them an attractive candidate for hierarchical actuators and mobile robotics. Using the derived constitutive models, general pennate actuator performance is better understood by analyzing the transmission ratio, blocked force, and free contraction. Loaded contractions and stiffness during isotonic and isobaric contractions are also explored. The results allow for informed design decisions and an understanding of the associated tradeoffs when recreating the remarkable properties of pennate musculature. Future work will leverage the results of this paper to create an adaptive pennate actuator that is capable of changing configuration in response to force, contraction and stiffness demands.

Is the joint-angle specificity of isometric resistance training real? And if so, does it have a neural basis?

Abstract:PurposeThere are suggestions that isometric resistance training (RT) produces highly angle-specific changes in strength with the greatest changes at the training angle, but these effects remain controversial with limited rigorous evidence, and the possible underpinning physiological mechanism(s) remain opaque. This study investigated the extent of angle-specific changes in strength and neuromuscular activation after RT in comparison to a control group.MethodsA RT group (n = 13) performed 14 isometric RT sessions at a knee-joint angle of 65° (0° is anatomical position) over a 4-week period, whilst a control group (CON, n = 9) maintained their habitual activity. Pre- and post-test sessions involved voluntary and evoked isometric knee extension contractions at five knee-joint angles (35°, 50°, 65°, 80° and 95°), while electromyography was recorded.ResultsRT group increased maximum voluntary torque (MVT) at the training angle (65°; + 12%) as well as 80° (+ 7%), 50° (+ 11%) and 35° (+ 5%). Joint-angle specificity was demonstrated within the RT group (MVT increased more at some angles vs. others), and also by more rigorous between-group comparisons (i.e., larger improvements after RT vs. CON at some angles than others). For the RT group, normalized EMG increased at three of the same joint angles as strength, but not for CON. Importantly, however, neither within- or between-group analyses provided evidence of joint angle-specific changes in activation.ConclusionIn conclusion, this study provides robust evidence for joint angle-specific strength gains after isometric RT, with weaker evidence that changes in neuromuscular activation may contribute to these adaptations.

The effects of regional quadriceps architecture on angle-specific rapid force expression

Abstract:Evaluating anatomical contributions to performance can increase understanding of muscle mechanics and guide physical preparation. While the impact of anatomy on muscular performance is well studied, the effects of regional quadriceps architecture on rapid torque or force expression are less clear. Regional (proximal, middle, and distal) quadriceps (vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, and vastus intermedius) thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and fascicle length (FL) of 24 males (48 limbs) were assessed via ultrasonography. Participants performed maximal isometric knee extensions at 40°, 70°, and 100° of knee flexion to evaluate rate of force development from 0 to 200 ms (RFD0-200). Measurements were repeated on three occasions with the greatest RFD0-200 and mean muscle architecture measures used for analysis. Linear regression models predicting angle-specific RFD0-200 from regional anatomy provided adjusted correlations (√adjR2) with bootstrapped compatibility limits. Mid-rectus femoris MT (√adjR2 = 0.41-0.51) and proximal vastus lateralis FL (√adjR2 = 0.42-0.48) were the best single predictors of RFD0-200, and the only measures to reach precision with 99% compatibility limits. Small simple correlations were found across all regions and joint angles between RFD0-200 and vastus lateralis MT (√adjR2 = 0.28 ± 0.13; mean ± SD), vastus lateralis FL (√adjR2 = 0.33 ± 0.10), rectus femoris MT (√adjR2 = 0.38 ± 0.10), and lateral vastus intermedius MT (√adjR2 = 0.24 ± 0.10). Between-correlation comparisons are reported within the article. Researchers should measure mid-region rectus femoris MT and vastus lateralis FL to efficiently and robustly evaluate potential anatomical contributions to rapid knee extension force changes, with distal and proximal measurements providing little additional value. However, correlations were generally small to moderate, suggesting that neurological factors may be critical in rapid force expression.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The architectural characteristics of muscle (fascicle length, pennation angle muscle thickness) respond to varying forms of stimuli (eg, training, immobilisation and injury). Architectural changes following injury are thought to occur in response to the restricted range of motion experienced during rehabilitation and the associated neuromuscular inhibition. However, it is unknown if these differences exist prior to injury, and had a role in injury occuring (prospectively), or if they occur in response to the incident itself (retrospectively). Considering that the structure of a muscle will influence how it functions, it is of interest to understand how these architectural variations may alter how a muscle acts with reference to the force-length and force-velocity relationships.OBJECTIVES: Our narrative review provides an overview of muscle architectural adaptations to training and injury. Specifically, we (1) describe the methods used to measure muscle architecture; (2) detail the impact that architectural alterations following training interventions, immobilisation and injury have on force production and (3) present a hypothesis on how neuromuscular inhibition could cause maladaptations to muscle architecture following injury.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate the rate of force development (RFD) and muscle architecture early adaptations in response to training with fast- or slow-velocity eccentric squats. Eighteen young novice participants followed six weeks (two sessions/week) of either fast-velocity (Fast) or slow-velocity (Slow) squat eccentric-only training. Fast eccentric training consisted of nine sets of nine eccentric-only repetitions at 70% of 1-RM with <1 s duration for each repetition. Slow eccentric training consisted of five sets of six eccentric-only repetitions at 90% of 1-RM with ~4 sec duration for each repetition. Before and after training, squat 1-RM, countermovement jump (CMJ), isometric leg press RFD, and vastus lateralis muscle architecture were evaluated. Squat 1-RM increased by 14.5 ± 7.0% (Fast, p < 0.01) and by 5.4 ± 5.1% (Slow, p < 0.05). RFD and fascicle length increased significantly in the Fast group by 10–19% and 10.0 ± 6.2%, p < 0.01, respectively. Muscle thickness increased only in the Slow group (6.0 ± 6.8%, p < 0.05). Significant correlations were found between the training induced changes in fascicle length and RFD. These results suggest that fast eccentric resistance training may be more appropriate for increases in rapid force production compared to slow eccentric resistance training, and this may be partly due to increases in muscle fascicle length induced by fast eccentric training.

Abstract:The force–length relationship is usually obtained for isometric contractions with maximal activation, but less is known about how sarcomere length affects force during submaximal activation. During submaximal activation, length-dependent alterations in calcium sensitivity, owing to changes in cross-bridge kinetics (rate of attachment and/or detachment), result in an activation-dependent shift in optimal length to longer sarcomere lengths. It is known that sarcomere length, as well as temperature and phosphorylation of the regulatory light chains of myosin, can modify Ca 2 + sensitivity by altering the probability of cross-bridge interaction. This altered calcium sensitivity is particularly important for submaximal force levels, as it can change the shape of the length dependence of force, with peak force occurring at sarcomere lengths longer than those associated with maximal filament overlap. In athletic contexts, contractions typically do not reach maximal intensity. Therefore, understanding that the ability to produce force under both maximal and submaximal conditions can differ, and that peak force can be generated at different lengths, could influence the development of targeted training regimens optimal for each sport.

Abstract:PurposeThe present study compared knee extension explosive isometric torque, neuromuscular activation, and intrinsic contractile properties at five different knee-joint angles (35°, 50°, 65°, 80°, and 95°; 0° = full knee extension).MethodsTwenty-eight young healthy males performed two experimental sessions each involving: 2 maximum, and 6–8 explosive voluntary contractions at each angle; to measure maximum voluntary torque (MVT), explosive voluntary torque (EVT; 50–150 ms after contraction onset) and quadriceps surface EMG (QEMG, 0–50, 0–100, and 0–150 ms after EMG onset during the explosive contractions). Maximum twitch and M-wave (MMAX) responses as well as octet contractions were evoked with femoral nerve stimulation at each angle.ResultsAbsolute MVT and EVT showed an inverted 'U' relationship with higher torque at intermediate angles. There were no differences between knee-joint angles for relative EVT (%MVT) during the early phase (≤ 75 ms) of contraction and only subtle differences during the late phase (≥ 75 ms) of contraction (≤ 11%). Neuromuscular activation during explosive contractions was greater at more flexed than extended positions, and this was also the case during MVT. Whilst relative twitch torque (%MVT) was higher at knee flexed positions (P ≤ 0.001), relative octet torque (%MVT) was higher at knee extended positions (P ≤ 0.001).ConclusionRelative EVT was broadly similar between joint angles, likely because neuromuscular activation during both explosive and plateau (maximum) phases of contraction changed proportionally, and due to the opposing changes in twitch and octet evoked responses with joint angle.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Skeletal muscles power a broad diversity of animal movements, despite only being able to produce high forces over a limited range of velocities. Pennate muscles use a range of gear ratios, the ratio of muscle shortening velocity to fiber shortening velocity, to partially circumvent these force–velocity constraints. Muscles operate with a high gear ratio at low forces; fibers rotate to greater angles of pennation, enhancing velocity but compromising force. At higher forces, muscles operate with a lower gear ratio; fibers rotate little so limiting muscle shortening velocity, but helping to preserve force. This ability to shift gears is thought to be due to the interplay of contractile force and connective tissue constraints. In order to test this hypothesis, gear ratios were determined in the medial gastrocnemius muscles of both healthy young rats, and old rats where the interaction between contractile and connective tissue properties was assumed to be disrupted. Muscle fiber and aponeurosis stiffness increased with age (P<0.05) from 19.1±5.0 kPa and 188.5±24.2 MPa, respectively, in young rats to 39.1±4.2 kPa and 328.0±48.3 MPa in old rats, indicating a mechanical change in the interaction between contractile and connective tissues. Gear ratio decreased with increasing force in young (P<0.001) but not old (P=0.72) muscles, indicating that variable gearing is lost in old muscle. These findings support the hypothesis that variable gearing results from the interaction between contractile and connective tissues and suggest novel explanations for the decline in muscle performance with age.

Abstract:The current understanding of age-related declines in muscle strength capacities is largely based upon strength testing at joint angles of optimal performance, but many activities of daily living involve force generation at muscle lengths/angles outside of optimal force. This study investigated the influence of age, joint angle, and muscle group (knee extensors and flexors) on maximal and rapid strength characteristics. Young (n = 21; age = 22.1 years) and older (23; 72.6 years) adults performed maximal voluntary contractions for the knee extensors and flexors at 20°, 60°, and 90° joint angles. Peak torque (PT) and rate of torque development (RTD) were calculated. An age, angle, and muscle interaction was found for PT, revealing differences for the knee flexors at all three joint angles for the older adults, whereas the young adults were similar between the 20° and 60° angles. The later RTD variable showed an age and muscle group interaction, whereas no interactions were found for early RTD. The angle of strength testing for maximal strength (PT) of the knee flexors showed dissimilar changes in strength characteristics for young versus older adults across joint angles. For later RTD variables, the testing angle was a more prominent factor for the knee extensors, but less so for the flexors.
On the rate-limiting dynamics of force development in muscle

Abstract:Skeletal muscles produce forces relatively slowly compared with the action potentials that excite them. The dynamics of force production are governed by multiple processes, such as calcium activation, cycling of cross-bridges between myofilaments, and contraction against elastic tissues and the body. These processes have been included piecemeal in some muscle models, but not integrated to reveal which are the most rate limiting. We therefore examined their integrative contributions to force development in two conventional types of muscle models: Hill-type and cross-bridge. We found that no combination of these processes can self-consistently reproduce classic data such as twitch and tetanus. Rather, additional dynamics are needed following calcium activation and facilitating cross-bridge cycling, such as for cooperative myofilament interaction and reconfiguration. We provisionally lump such processes into a simple first-order model of 'force facilitation dynamics' that integrate into a cross-bridge-type muscle model. The proposed model self-consistently reproduces force development for a range of excitations including twitch and tetanus and electromyography-to-force curves. The model's step response reveals relatively small timing contributions of calcium activation (3%), cross-bridge cycling (3%) and contraction (27%) to overall force development of human quadriceps, with the remainder (67%) explained by force facilitation. The same set of model parameters predicts the change in force magnitude (gain) and timing (phase delay) as a function of excitatory firing rate, or as a function of cyclic contraction frequency. Although experiments are necessary to reveal the dynamics of muscle, integrative models are useful for identifying the main rate-limiting processes.
