Abstract:The role of process planning in small-batch, discrete parts metal working industries and the impact of the computer in automating this important but tedious job are discussed. The nature, advantages, and limitations of the manual, variant, and generative approaches to process planning are presented along with a review of the progress to date for each approach. A major thrust of the paper is to discuss approaches and strategies for structuring manufacturing methods and data in decision logic formats applicable for developing generative type automated planning systems. Although no particular approach is promoted, the paper provides an overview and information useful for approaching the task of designing a generative type system. Some detailed discussion on part coding schemes and structuring decision logic for generative type planning systems is also presented. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the future of computer-aided process planning and the role that micro-computers will play in that future.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the transformative impact from the integration of artificial intelligence with organic and polymer synthesis. This synergy offers innovative and intelligent solutions to a range of classic problems in synthetic chemistry. These exciting advancements include the prediction of molecular property, multi-step retrosynthetic pathway planning, elucidation of the structure-performance relationship of single-step transformation, establishment of the quantitative linkage between polymer structures and their functions, design and optimization of polymerization process, prediction of the structure and sequence of biological macromolecules, as well as automated and intelligent synthesis platforms. Chemists can now explore synthetic chemistry with unprecedented precision and efficiency, creating novel reactions, catalysts, and polymer materials under the data-driven paradigm. Despite these thrilling developments, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) synthetic chemistry is still in its infancy, facing challenges and limitations in terms of data openness, model interpretability, as well as software and hardware support. This review aims to provide an overview of the current progress, key challenges, and future development suggestions in the interdisciplinary field between AI and synthetic chemistry. It is hoped that this overview will offer readers a comprehensive understanding of this emerging field, inspiring and promoting further scientific research and development.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing(AM) has been increasingly used in production. Because of its rapid growth, the efficiency and robustness of AM-based product development processes should be improved. Artificial intelligence(AI) is a powerful tool that has outperformed humans in numerous complex tasks. AI-enabled intelligent agents can reduce the workforce required to scale up AM production and achieve higher resource utilization efficiency. This study provides an introduction of AI techniques. Then,the current development of AI-enabled AM product development is investigated. Existing intelligent agents are used for problems in product design, process design and production stages. Based on the review, current research gaps and future research directions are identified. To guide future development of more efficient and comprehensive intelligent agents, a smart AM framework based on cloud-edge computing is proposed. Global consideration can be realized in the cloud environment, and a fast response can be achieved at the edge nodes.
Synthesizing Customized Planners from Specifications

Abstract:Existing plan synthesis approaches in artificial intelligence fall into two categories -- domain independent and domain dependent. The domain independent approaches are applicable across a variety of domains, but may not be very efficient in any one given domain. The domain dependent approaches need to be (re)designed for each domain separately, but can be very efficient in the domain for which they are designed. One enticing alternative to these approaches is to automatically synthesize domain independent planners given the knowledge about the domain and the theory of planning. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of using existing automated software synthesis tools to support such synthesis. Specifically, we describe an architecture called CLAY in which the Kestrel Interactive Development System (KIDS) is used to derive a domain-customized planner through a semi-automatic combination of a declarative theory of planning, and the declarative control knowledge specific to a given domain, to semi-automatically combine them to derive domain-customized planners. We discuss what it means to write a declarative theory of planning and control knowledge for KIDS, and illustrate our approach by generating a class of domain-specific planners using state space refinements. Our experiments show that the synthesized planners can outperform classical refinement planners (implemented as instantiations of UCP, Kambhampati & Srivastava, 1995), using the same control knowledge. We will contrast the costs and benefits of the synthesis approach with conventional methods for customizing domain independent planners.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence and machine learning have demonstrated their potential role in predictive chemistry and synthetic planning of small molecules; there are at least a few reports of companies employing <i>in silico</i> synthetic planning into their overall approach to accessing target molecules. A data-driven synthesis planning program is one component being developed and evaluated by the Machine Learning for Pharmaceutical Discovery and Synthesis (MLPDS) consortium, comprising MIT and 13 chemical and pharmaceutical company members. Together, we wrote this perspective to share how we think predictive models can be integrated into medicinal chemistry synthesis workflows, how they are currently used within MLPDS member companies, and the outlook for this field.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning is a flourishing research and development discipline that provides powerful tools for searching a course of action that achieves some user goal. While these planning tools show excellent performance on benchmark planning problems, they represent challenging software systems when it comes to their use and integration in real-world applications. In fact, even in-depth understanding of their internal mechanisms does not guarantee that one can successfully set up, use and manipulate existing planning tools. We contribute toward alleviating this situation by proposing a service-oriented planning architecture to be at the core of the ability to design, develop and use next-generation AI planning systems. We collect and classify common planning capabilities to form the building blocks of the planning architecture. We incorporate software design principles and patterns into the architecture to allow for usability, interoperability and reusability of the planning capabilities. Our prototype planning system demonstrates the potential of our approach for rapid prototyping and flexibility of system composition. Finally, we provide insight into the qualitative advantages of our approach when compared to a typical planning tool.

Abstract:Autonomous experimentation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) provides an exciting opportunity to revolutionize inorganic materials discovery and development. Herein, we review recent progress in the design of self-driving laboratories, including robotics to automate materials synthesis and characterization, in conjunction with AI to interpret experimental outcomes and propose new experimental procedures. We focus on efforts to automate inorganic synthesis through solution-based routes, solid-state reactions, and thin film deposition. In each case, connections are made to relevant work in organic chemistry, where automation is more common. Characterization techniques are primarily discussed in the context of phase identification, as this task is critical to understand what products have formed during synthesis. The application of deep learning to analyze multivariate characterization data and perform phase identification is examined. To achieve "closed-loop" materials synthesis and design, we further provide a detailed overview of optimization algorithms that use active learning to rationally guide experimental iterations. Finally, we highlight several key opportunities and challenges for the future development of self-driving inorganic materials synthesis platforms.

Abstract:Since the time when first CASE (Computer-Aided Software Engineering) methods and tools were developed, little has been done in the area of automated creation of code. CASE tools support a software engineer in creation the system structure, in defining interfaces and relationships between software modules and, after the code has been written, in performing testing tasks on different levels of detail. Writing code is still the task of a skilled human, which makes the whole software development a costly and error-prone process. It seems that recent advances in AI area, particularly in deep learning methods, may considerably improve the matters. The paper presents an extensive survey of recent work and achievements in this area reported in the literature, both from the theoretical branch of research and from engineer-oriented approaches. Then, some challenges for the future work are proposed, classified into Full AI, Assisted AI and Supplementary AI research fields. Abstract:This paper is based on how software development has been revolutionized using AI in automation, mainly dealing with code synthesis and rewrite frameworks. While there is no focused definition for software development with AI technologies, their application in development processes is unlikely to remain marginal as they mature and provide higher productivity, improved code quality, and enhanced ability for automating repetitive tasks in development. Automating coding means that predefined tools can bring code suggestions, show and apply refactoring features, and enforce coding standards so developers can devote their efforts to other aspects of software development. The following paper describes the practical systems that should be adopted before AI can be incorporated into software development. It also covers essential factors such as ethical, security, and quality aspects regarding the proper use of artificial intelligence. Lastly, the paper focuses on the direction and innovations in the future, including domain-specific AI models, better explainability of the AI solutions, and collaborative tools that can work according to improved and modified development practices. The framework is intended to balance machine learning with human experience to help developers utilize the benefits that an AI-Based Software Development Framework can render.

Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:The growth of industrial applications of artificial intelligence has raised the need for design tools to aid in the conception and implementation of such complex systems. The design of automated planning systems faces several engineering challenges including the proper modeling of the domain knowledge: the creation of a model that represents the problem to be solved, the world that surrounds the system, and the ways the system can interact with and change the world in order to solve the problem. Knowledge modeling in AI planning is a hard task that involves acquiring the system requirements and making design decisions that can determine the behavior and performance of the resulting system. In this paper we investigate how knowledge acquired during a post-design phase of modeling can be used to improve the prospective model. A post-design framework is introduced which combines a knowledge engineering tool and a virtual prototyping environment for the analysis and simulation of plans. This framework demonstrates that post-design analysis supports the discovery of missing requirements and can guide the model refinement cycle. We present three case studies using benchmark domains and eight state-of-the-art planners. Our results demonstrate that significant improvements in plan quality and an increase in planning speed of up to three orders of magnitude can be achieved through a careful post-design process. We argue that such a process is critical for the deployment of AI planning technology in real-world engineering applications.

Abstract:In recent years, the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is experiencing a boom, caused by recent breakthroughs in computing power, AI techniques, and software architectures. Among the many fields being impacted by this paradigm shift, process engineering has experienced the benefits caused by AI. However, the published methods and applications in process engineering are diverse, and there is still much unexploited potential. Herein, the goal of providing a systematic overview of the current state of AI and its applications in process engineering is discussed. Current applications are described and classified according to a broader systematic. Current techniques, types of AI as well as pre‐ and postprocessing will be examined similarly and assigned to the previously discussed applications. Given the importance of mechanistic models in process engineering as opposed to the pure black box nature of most of AI, reverse engineering strategies as well as hybrid modeling will be highlighted. Furthermore, a holistic strategy will be formulated for the application of the current state of AI in process engineering.
