Abstract:To compare the stretching bond force constants k r of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in armchair structures, using density functional theory (DFT), k r values for BNNTs and CNTs across various diameters were calculated employing the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) within DFT. The diameters studied ranged from (3,3) to (10,10) armchair configurations to observe the diameter-dependent variability in bond stiffness. The highest k r value, 7.14 mdyn/Å, was obtained for the (10,10) CNT configuration, whereas the lowest, 5.83 mdyn/Å, was noted for the (3,3) BNNT configuration. Comparative analysis showed distinct differences in charge density resistance and bond stiffness among the tubular nanostructures studied, which were influenced by their respective diameters. The present theoretical calculations show that as the diameter of the nanotubes increases, the k r values of BNNTs converge more rapidly to its planar hexagonal structure (6.12 mdyn/Å) value than the CNTs approaching to the value for graphene (7.17 mdyn/Å). This suggests inherent differences in the mechanical properties of these materials depending on the bonding type and diameter.
