Abstract:A class of finite dimensional associative algebras, called cyclotomic blob algebras, is introduced by means of diagrammatic generators and relations. They are in fact a generalization of Martin and Saleur's blob algebras and have as subalgebras cyclotomic Temperley–Lieb algebras defined recently by Rui and Xi. For precise formalization, an equivalent ring theoretical definition of such algebras is also provided. Based upon the diagrammatic definition, we show that cyclotomic blob algebras are both tabular in the sense of R.M. Green and cellular in the sense of Graham and Lehrer, and we thus obtain a description of all the irreducible representations and a criterion for the quasi-heredity of cyclotomic blob algebras. A branching rule for the cell modules of such algebras is also derived. As a by-product, we prove that cyclotomic Temperley–Lieb algebras are tabular as well, and partially recover their cellularity.

Abstract:To encode an important property of the "no broken circuit bases" of the Orlik-Solomon-Terao algebras, Andras Szenes has introduced a particular type of bases, the so called "diagonal basis". We prove that this definition extends naturally to a large class of algebras, the so called chi-algebras. Our definitions make also use of an "iterative residue formula" based on the matroidal operation of contraction. This formula can be seen as the combinatorial analogue of an iterative residue formula introduced by Szenes. As an application we deduce nice formulas to express a pure element in a diagonal basis.

Characterizations of the Borel triangle and Borel polynomials

Abstract:We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We investigate the reversions of the triangles studied. We introduce the notion of Fuss-Borel triangles and Fuss-Catalan triangles. We end with some remarks on the Catalan triangle.

Tied--boxed algebras

Abstract:We introduce two new algebras that we call \emph{tied--boxed Hecke algebra} and \emph{tied--boxed Temperley--Lieb algebra}. The first one is a subalgebra of the algebra of braids and ties introduced by Aicardi and Juyumaya, and the second one is a tied--version of the well known Temperley--Lieb algebra. We study their representation theory and give cellular bases for them. Furthermore, we explore a strong connection between the tied--boxed Temperley--Lieb algebra and the so--called partition Temperley--Lieb algebra given by Juyumaya. Also, we show that both structures inherit diagrammatic interpretations from a new class of monoids that we call \emph{boxed ramified monoids}. Additionally, we give presentations for the singular part of the ramified symmetric monoid and for the boxed ramified monoid associated to the Brauer monoid.

Abstract:The symplectic blob algebras are a family of finite dimensional noncommutative algebras over $\mathbb{Z}[X_1,X_2,X_3,X_4,X_5,X_6]$ that can be defined in terms of planar diagrams in a way that extends the Temperley-Lieb and (ordinary) blob algebras. In this paper we construct a new "tensor space" representation of the symplectic blob algebra $\mathcal{A} \otimes \sba$ for each $n \in \mathbb{N}$, for $\mathcal{A}$ a particular commutative ring with indeterminates. The form of this representation is motivated by the XXZ representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\TL_n$ \cite{jimbo86} and the related Martin-Woodcock representation of the blob algebra $b_n$ \cite{martinwoodcock2003}. For $k$ an algebraically closed field, and for any $(\delta,\delta_L,\delta_R,\kappa_L,\kappa_R,\kappa) \in k^{6}$, the algebra $\sba$ specialises to a $k$-algebra $\sba(\delta,\delta_L,\delta_R,\kappa_L,\kappa_R,\kappa)$. For any such specialisation, our representation passes to a $\sba(\delta,\delta_L,\delta_R,\kappa_L,\kappa_R,\kappa)$-module $\mathcal{V}(n)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce Gram matrices for the signed partition algebras, the algebra of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-relations and the partition algebras. We prove that the Gram matrix is similar to a matrix which is a direct sum of block submatrices. In this connection, $(s_1, s_2, r_1, r_2, p_1, p_2)$-Stirling numbers of the second kind are introduced and their identities are established. As a consequence, the semisimplicity of a signed partition algebra is established.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:In 1987 Jonathan and Peter Borwein, inspired by the works of Ramanujan, derived many efficient algorithms for computing $\pi$. We will see that by using only a formula of Gauss's and elementary algebra we are able to prove the correctness of two of them.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.

Abstract:Let $\Field$ be an algebraically closed field. For $n \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\delta, \delta_L, \delta_R, \kappa_L, \kappa_R, \kappa \in \Field$, the symplectic blob algebra $\sba(\delta, \delta_L, \delta_R, \kappa_L, \kappa_R, \kappa)$ is a finite dimensional non-commutative $\Field$-algebra that may be viewed as an extension of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. In a previous paper, we defined, for any $n \in \mathbb{N}$, a tensor space module $\tensor[_\sba]{\mathcal{V}(n)}{}$. In this paper we generalise an argument used by Martin and Ryom-Hansen in their study of the (ordinary) blob algebra to show that when $\sba$ is quasihereditary the module $\tensor[_\sba]{\mathcal{V}(n)}{}$ is full-tilting.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish that FFLV polytopes, which describe monomial bases compatible with the PBW filtration on finite-dimensional simple modules for $\lie{sl}_n$ and $\lie{sp}_n$, are actually string polytopes as described by Littelmann and Berenstein-Zelevinsky for Demazure modules of higher-rank Lie algebras.

Abstract:We say that two finite words $u$ and $v$ are abelian equivalent if and only if they have the same number of occurrences of each letter, or equivalently if they define the same Parikh vector. In this paper we investigate various abelian properties of words including abelian complexity, and abelian powers. We study the abelian complexity of the Thue-Morse word and the Tribonacci word, and answer an old question of G. Rauzy by exhibiting a class of words whose abelian complexity is everywhere equal to 3. We also investigate abelian repetitions in words and show that any infinite word with bounded abelian complexity contains abelian $k$-powers for every positive integer $k$.

Abstract:Dendric shift spaces simultaneously generalize codings of regular interval exchanges and episturmian shift spaces, themselves both generalizations of Sturmian words. One of the key properties enforced by dendricity is the Return Theorem. In this paper, we prove its converse, providing the following natural algebraic perspective on dendricity: A minimal shift space is dendric if and only if every set of return words is a basis of the free group over the alphabet.

Abstract:The set of unique $\beta$-expansions over the alphabet $\{0,1\}$ is trivial for $\beta$ below the golden ratio and uncountable above the Komornik-Loreti constant. Generalisations of these thresholds for three-letter alphabets were studied by Komornik, Lai and Pedicini (2011, 2017). We use S-adic words including the Thue-Morse word (which defines the Komornik-Loreti constant) and Sturmian words (which characterise generalised golden ratios) to determine the value of a certain generalisation of the Komornik-Loreti constant to three-letter alphabets.

Abstract:We prove a sharp lower bound on the number of terms in an element of the reduced Gröbner basis of a Schubert determinantal ideal $I_w$ under the term order of [Knutson-Miller '05]. We give three applications. First, we give a pattern-avoidance characterization of the matrix Schubert varieties whose defining ideals are binomial. This complements a result of [Escobar-Mészáros '16] on matrix Schubert varieties that are toric with respect to their natural torus action. Second, we give a combinatorial proof that the recent formulas of [Rajchgot-Robichaux-Weigandt '23] and [Almousa-Dochtermann-Smith '22] computing the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of vexillary $I_w$ and toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs respectively agree for binomial $I_w$. Third, we demonstrate that the Gröbner basis for $I_w$ given by minimal generators [Gao-Yong '22] is reduced if and only if the defining permutation $w$ is vexillary.
