Abstract:In the first two years of operation JWST has delivered key new insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies in the early Universe. By combining imaging with spectroscopy, we discovered and characterised the first generation of galaxies, probing the Universe at an age of 300 million years. While the current JWST observations confirm the overall cosmological framework and the paradigm of galaxy formation, there are also surprises, including large abundances of bright galaxies and accreting black holes in the early Universe. These observations, together with detailed measurements of the stellar populations and morphological structure, will help us to develop in the coming years a more refined understanding of the baryonic physics (including star formation and feedback processes) that leads to the formation of mature systems at later epochs, including our own Milky Way galaxy.

Abstract:The extremely rapid assembly of the earliest galaxies during the first billion years of cosmic history is a major challenge for our understanding of galaxy formation physics. The advent of JWST has exacerbated this issue by confirming the existence of galaxies in significant numbers as early as the first few hundred million years. Perhaps even more surprisingly, in some galaxies, this initial highly efficient star formation rapidly shuts down, or quenches, giving rise to massive quiescent galaxies as little as 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. However, due to their faintness and red colour, it has proven extremely challenging to learn about these extreme quiescent galaxies, or to confirm whether any exist at earlier times. Here we report the spectroscopic confirmation of a massive quiescent galaxy, GS-9209, at redshift $z=4.658$, just 1.25 billion years after the Big Bang, using JWST NIRSpec. From these data we infer a stellar mass of $M_* = 3.8\pm0.2\times10^{10}\ M_\odot$, which formed over a $\simeq200$ Myr period before this galaxy quenched its star formation activity at $z=6.5^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$, when the Universe was $\simeq800$ million years old. Based on the presence of broad H$\alpha$ in the spectrum and a high narrow-line [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratio, we infer the presence of an accreting supermassive black hole, with a mass of $M_\bullet = 5\pm1\times10^{8}\ M_\odot$. This large black hole mass relative to the stellar mass suggests that active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback may have been responsible for quenching this galaxy. GS-9209 is also extremely compact, with an effective radius, $r_e=215\pm20$ parsecs. This galaxy is both a likely descendent of the highest-redshift submillimetre galaxies and quasars, and a likely progenitor for the dense, ancient cores of the most massive local galaxies.

Abstract:Local and low-redshift ( z <3) galaxies are known to broadly follow a bimodal distribution: actively star forming galaxies with relatively stable star-formation rates, and passive systems. These two populations are connected by galaxies in relatively slow transition. In contrast, theory predicts that star formation was stochastic at early cosmic times and in low-mass systems 1–4 : these galaxies transitioned rapidly between starburst episodes and phases of suppressed star formation, potentially even causing temporary quiescence –so-called mini-quenching events 5,6 . However, the regime of star-formation burstiness is observationally highly unconstrained. Directly observing mini-quenched galaxies in the primordial Universe is therefore of utmost importance to constrain models of galaxy formation and transformation 7,8 . Early quenched galaxies have been identified out to redshift z < 5 [e.g. 9–12 ], and these are all found to be massive ( M ⋆ > 10 10 M ⊙ ) and relatively old. Here we report a (mini-)quenched galaxy at z=7.3, when the Universe was only 700 Myr old. The JWST /NIRSpec spectrum is very blue ( UV =0.16 ± 0.03 mag), but exhibits a Balmer break and no nebular emission lines. The galaxy experienced a short starburst followed by rapid quenching; its stellar mass (4-6×10 8 M ⊙ ) falls in a range that is sensitive to various feedback mechanisms, which can result in perhaps only temporary quenching.

Abstract:A major unsolved problem in galaxy evolution is the early appearance of massive quiescent galaxies that no longer actively form stars only $ \sim 1$ billion years after the Big Bang. Their high stellar masses and extremely compact structure indicate that they formed through rapid bursts of star formation between redshift $z \sim 6-11$. Theoretical models of galaxy evolution cannot explain their high number density, rapid growth and truncation of star formation at such early times, which likely requires extreme feedback to destroy the cold interstellar medium (the fuel for star formation). We report the discovery of a significant reservoir of hot dust in one of the most distant known examples at $z = 4.658$, GS-9209. The dust was identified using JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), whose unprecedented sensitivity and high spatial resolution, for the first time, firmly show that this dust is significantly more extended than the stars by $\gtrsim 3$ times. We find that the dust has preferentially been evacuated or diluted in the galaxy center. Our analysis finds that the extended hot dust emission is consistent with recent heating by a younger and more spatially extended generation of star formation. This reveals that the earliest quiescent galaxies did not form in a single rapid burst; instead, similar to galaxy growth at later times, the center formed first with star formation continuing in an extended envelope. The growth of this galaxy is truncating from the inside out, consistent with central gas depletion from early AGN feedback.

Abstract:Many quiescent galaxies discovered in the early Universe by JWST raise fundamental questions on when and how these galaxies became and stayed quenched. Making use of the latest version of the semianalytic model GAEA that provides good agreement with the observed quenched fractions up to z ∼ 3, we make predictions for the expected fractions of quiescent galaxies up to z ∼ 7 and analyze the main quenching mechanism. We find that in a simulated box of 685 Mpc on a side, the first quenched massive (M ⋆ ∼ 10 11 M ⊙ ), Milky Way–mass, and low-mass (M ⋆ ∼ 10 9.5 M ⊙ ) galaxies appear at z ∼ 4.5, z ∼ 6.2, and before z = 7, respectively. Most quenched galaxies identified at early redshifts remain quenched for more than 1 Gyr. Independently of galaxy stellar mass, the dominant quenching mechanism at high redshift is accretion disk feedback (quasar winds) from a central massive black hole, which is triggered by mergers in massive and Milky Way–mass galaxies and by disk instabilities in low-mass galaxies. Environmental stripping becomes increasingly more important at lower redshift.

Abstract:The formation of galaxies by gradual hierarchical co-assembly of baryons and cold dark matter halos is a fundamental paradigm underpinning modern astrophysics and predicts a strong decline in the number of massive galaxies at early cosmic times. Extremely massive quiescent galaxies (stellar masses $>10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) have now been observed as early as 1-2 billions years after the Big Bang; these are extremely constraining on theoretical models as they form 300-500 Myr earlier and only some models can form massive galaxies this early. Here we report on the spectroscopic observations with the James Webb Space Telescope of a massive quiescent galaxy ZF-UDS-7329 at redshift 3.205 $\pm$ 0.005 that eluded deep ground-based spectrscopy, is significantly redder than typical and whose spectrum reveals features typical of much older stellar populations. Detailed modelling shows the stellar population formed around 1.5 billion years earlier in time (z ~ 11) at an epoch when dark matter halos of sufficient hosting mass have not yet assembled in the standard scenario. This observation may point to the presence of undetected populations of early galaxies and the possibility of significant gaps in our understanding of early stellar populations, galaxy formation and/or the nature of dark matter.

Abstract:We identify the first quiescent galaxies in TNG300, the largest volume of the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation suite, and explore their quenching processes and time evolution to z=0. We find that the first quiescent galaxies with stellar masses M_* > 3 x 10^{10} M_sun and specific star formation rates sSFR < 10^{-11} yr^{-1} emerge at z~4.2 in TNG300. Suppression of star formation in these galaxies begins with a thermal mode of AGN feedback at z~6, and a kinetic feedback mode acts in each galaxy by z~4.7 to complete the quenching process, which occurs on a time-scale of ~0.35 Gyr. Surprisingly, we find that the majority of these galaxies are not the main progenitors of their z=0 descendants; instead, four of the five galaxies fall into more massive galaxies in subsequent mergers at a range of redshifts 2.5 < z < 0.2. By z=0, these descendants are the centres of galaxy clusters with average stellar masses of 8 x 10^{11} M_sun. We make predictions for the first quenched galaxies to be located by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Abstract:JWST observations confirm the existence of galaxies as early as 300Myr and at a higher number density than expected based on galaxy formation models and HST observations. Yet, sources confirmed spectroscopically in the first 500Myr have estimated stellar masses $<5\times10^8M_\odot$, limiting the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for investigating substructure. We present a high-resolution spectroscopic and spatially resolved study of a rare bright galaxy at $z=9.3127\pm0.0002$ with a stellar mass of $(2.5^{+0.7}_{-0.5})\times10^9M_\odot$, forming $25^{+3}_{-4}M_\odot/yr$ and with a metallicity of $\sim0.1Z_\odot$- lower than in the local universe for the stellar mass but in line with expectations of chemical enrichment in galaxies 1-2Gyr after the Big Bang. The system has a morphology typically associated to two interacting galaxies, with a two-component main clump of very young stars (age$<10$Myr) surrounded by an extended stellar population ($130\pm20$Myr old, identified by modeling the NIRSpec spectrum) and an elongated clumpy tidal tail. The spectroscopic observations identify O, Ne and H emission lines, and the Lyman break, where there is evidence of substantial Ly$\alpha$ absorption. The [OII] doublet is resolved spectrally, enabling an estimate of the electron number density and ionization parameter of the interstellar medium and showing higher densities and ionization than in lower redshift analogs. For the first time at $z>8$, we identify evidence of absorption lines (Si, C and Fe), with low confidence individual detections but SNR$>6$ when stacked. The absorption features suggest that Ly$\alpha$ is damped by the interstellar and circumgalactic medium. Our observations provide evidence of rapid efficient build-up of mass and metals in the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang through mergers, demonstrating that massive galaxies with several billion stars exist earlier than expected.

Abstract:The surprising JWST discovery of a quiescent, low-mass ($M_\star=10^{8.7} \rm M_\odot$) galaxy at redshift $z=7.3$ (JADES-GS-z7-01-QU) represents a unique opportunity to study the imprint of feedback processes on early galaxy evolution. We build a sample of 130 low-mass ($M_\star\lesssim 10^{9.5} \rm M_\odot$) galaxies from the SERRA cosmological zoom-in simulations, which show a feedback-regulated, bursty star formation history (SFH). The fraction of time spent in an active phase increases with the stellar mass from $f_{duty}\approx 0.6$ at $M_\star\approx 10^{7.5} \rm M_\odot$ to $\approx 0.99$ at $M_\star\geq 10^{9} \rm M_\odot$, and it is in agreement with the value $f_{duty}\approx 0.75$ estimated for JADES-GS-z7-01-QU. On average, 30% of the galaxies are quiescent in the range $6 < z < 8.4$; they become the dominant population at $M_\star\lesssim 10^{8.3} \rm M_\odot$. However, none of these quiescent systems matches the Spectral Energy Distribution of JADES-GS-z7-01-QU, unless their SFH is artificially truncated a few Myr after the main star formation peak. As supernova feedback can only act on a longer timescale ($\gtrsim 30 \rm \, Myr$), this implies that the observed abrupt quenching must be caused by a faster physical mechanism, such as radiation-driven winds.

All our galaxies are massive ($\sim0.1-1.2 \times 10^{11} M\odot$), with masses comparable to massive galaxies in the local Universe. We find that the oldest galaxy in our sample formed $\sim1.0\times10^{11} M\odot$ of mass within the first few hundred million years of the Universe and has been quenched for more than a billion years by the time of observation at z$\sim$3.2 ($\sim$2 billion years after the Big Bang). Our results point to very early formation of massive galaxies requiring a high conversion rate of baryons to stars in the early Universe.

Abstract:The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered a surprising population of bright galaxies in the very early Universe ( ≲ 500 Myr after the Big Bang) that is hard to explain with conventional galaxy-formation models and whose physical properties are not fully understood. Insight into their internal physics is best captured through nebular lines, but at these early epochs, the brightest of these spectral features are redshifted into the mid-infrared and remain elusive. Using the mid-infrared instrument onboard the James Webb Space Telescope, here we present a detection of Hα and doubly ionized oxygen ([O iii ] 4959,5007 Å) from the bright, ultra-high-redshift galaxy candidate GHZ2/GLASS-z12. Based on these emission lines, we infer a spectroscopic redshift of z = 12.33 ± 0.04, placing this galaxy just ~400 Myr after the Big Bang. These observations provide key insights into the conditions of this primaeval, luminous galaxy, which shows hard ionizing conditions rarely seen in the local Universe and probably driven by a compact and young burst ( ≲ 30 Myr) of star formation. The galaxy's oxygen-to-hydrogen abundance is close to a tenth of the solar value, indicating a rapid metal enrichment. This study establishes the unique conditions of this notably bright and distant galaxy and the huge potential of mid-infrared observations to characterize these primordial systems.

Abstract:The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has made startling discoveries regarding the early universe. It has revealed galaxies as soon as 300 million years after the Big Bang, challenging current galaxy formation models. Additionally, it has identified massive, bright galaxies in the young universe, contradicting the standard {\Lambda}CDM model's age estimate of 13.8 Gyr. This prompts a reevaluation of galaxy formation and cosmological models. There is a strong tension between JWST high-redshift galaxy observations and Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) satellite measurements. Even alternative cosmological models, including those incorporating dark matter baryon interaction, f(R) gravity, and dynamical dark have failed to resolve this tension. One possible solution is that the Universe's age exceeds predictions by the {\Lambda}CDM model. The study challenges this by introducing a method based on blue straggler stars (BSs) within GCs, comparing ages with other models. The ages obtained are compared with those of different models to certify that they are equally valid. These values are comparable within the error ranges except for the clusters: NGC104, NGC 5634, IC 4499, NGC 6273 and NGC 4833, finding their respective ages to be between 14.7 and 21.6 Gyr, surpassing the commonly accepted age of the Universe. These results inferred an age for the Universe of around 26 Gyr, close to 26.7 Gyr. This value aligns with that suggested by the cosmological model named Covarying Coupling Constants + TL (CCC+TL). Such a value is consistent with early universe observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The results of the present paper reinforce the advocating for a critical review of models encompassing dark mass, dark energy, and the dynamics of the Universe, particularly in explaining the presence of primitive massive galaxies, very old GCs, and very old and poor metallic stars.

Abstract:During the first 500 million years of cosmic history, the first stars and galaxies formed, seeding the Universe with heavy elements and eventually reionizing the intergalactic medium. Observations with JWST have uncovered a surprisingly high abundance of candidates for early star-forming galaxies, with distances (redshifts, $z$), estimated from multi-band photometry, as large as $z\approx 16$, far beyond pre-JWST limits. While generally robust, such photometric redshifts can suffer from degeneracies and occasionally catastrophic errors. Spectroscopic measurement is required to validate these sources and to reliably quantify physical properties that can constrain galaxy formation models and cosmology. Here we present JWST spectroscopy that confirms redshifts for two very luminous galaxies with $z > 11$, but also demonstrates that another candidate with suggested $z\approx 16$ instead has $z = 4.9$, with an unusual combination of nebular line emission and dust reddening that mimics the colors expected for much more distant objects. These results reinforce evidence for the early, rapid formation of remarkably luminous galaxies, while also highlighting the necessity of spectroscopic verification. The large abundance of bright, early galaxies may indicate shortcomings in current galaxy formation models, or deviation from physical properties (such as the stellar initial mass function) that are generally believed to hold at later times.

Abstract:Recent observations by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have revealed the presence of bright and well-formed galaxies at high redshifts, challenging the predictions of the standard Lambda-Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) cosmological model. This paper explores the potential of Modified Gravity (MOG), specifically Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity (STVG), to account for the rapid formation of these galaxies in the early universe. By enhancing the gravitational constant through a dimensionless parameter $\alpha$ and incorporating a massive vector field $\phi_\mu$, MOG predicts deeper gravitational wells that can accelerate the collapse of baryonic matter. We present theoretical insights demonstrating how MOG can facilitate the increase in star formation rate and early formation of galaxies, offering a compelling alternative to LCDM. Our findings suggest that MOG provides a viable framework for understanding the rapid growth of galaxies observed by JWST.

Abstract:Within the established framework of structure formation, galaxies start as systems of low stellar mass and gradually grow into far more massive galaxies. The existence of massive galaxies in the first billion years of the Universe, suggested by recent observations, appears to challenge this model, as such galaxies would require highly efficient conversion of baryons into stars. An even greater challenge in this epoch is the existence of massive galaxies that have already ceased forming stars. However, robust detections of early massive quiescent galaxies have been challenging due to the coarse wavelength sampling of photometric surveys. Here we report the spectroscopic confirmation with the James Webb Space Telescope of the quiescent galaxy RUBIES-EGS-QG-1 at redshift $z=4.90$, 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang. Deep stellar absorption features in the spectrum reveal that the galaxy's stellar mass of $10^{11}\,M_\odot$, corroborated by the mass implied by its gas kinematics, formed in a short $200\,$Myr burst of star formation, after which star formation activity dropped rapidly and persistently. According to current galaxy formation models, systems with such rapid stellar mass growth and early quenching are too rare to plausibly occur in the small area probed spectroscopically with JWST. Instead, the discovery of RUBIES-EGS-QG-1 implies that early massive quiescent galaxies can be quenched earlier or exhaust gas available for star formation more efficiently than currently assumed.

Abstract:Hubble Space Telescope imaging shows that most star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon—the peak of cosmic star formation history—appear disk-dominated, leaving the origin of the dense cores in their quiescent descendants unclear. With the James Webb Space Telescope's high-resolution imaging to 5 μm, we can now map the rest-frame near-infrared emission, a much closer proxy for stellar mass distribution, in these massive galaxies. We selected 70 star-forming galaxies with 10 < log(M) < 12 and 1.5 < z < 3 in the CEERS survey and compare their morphologies in the rest-frame optical to those in the rest-frame near-IR. While the bulk of these galaxies are disk-dominated in 1.5 μm (rest-frame optical) imaging, they appear more bulge-dominated at 4.4 μm (rest-frame near-infrared). Our analysis reveals that in massive star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2, the radial surface brightness profiles steepen significantly, from a slope of ∼0.3 dex −1 at 1.5 μm to ∼1.4 dex −1 at 4.4 μm within radii <1 kpc. Additionally, we find their total flux contained within the central 1 kpc is approximately 7 times higher in F444W than in F150W. In rest-optical emission, a galaxy's central surface density appears to be the strongest indicator of whether it is quenched or star-forming. Our most significant finding is that at redder wavelengths, the central surface density ratio between quiescent and star-forming galaxies dramatically decreases from ∼10 to ∼1. This suggests the high central densities associated with galaxy quenching are already in place during the star-forming phase, imposing new constraints on the transition from star formation to quiescence.

Abstract:To date, JWST has detected the earliest known star clusters in our Universe (Adamo et al. 2024, Messa et al. 2024, Vanzella et al. 2024, Mowla et al. 2024). They appear to be relatively compact (~few pc, Adamo et al. 2024) and had only recently formed their stars. It was speculated that these clusters may be the earliest progenitors of globular clusters ever detected. Globular clusters are a relic of the initial stages of star formation in the Universe. However, because they contain little to no dark matter (e.g., Heggie & Hut 1996, Bradford et al. 2011, Conroy et al. 2011, Ibata et al. 2013), their formation mechanism poses a significant theoretical challenge. A recent suggestion pointed out that the relative velocity between the gas and the dark matter (Tseliakhovich & Hirata 2010) in the early Universe could naturally form potentially star-forming regions outside of dark matter halos. Here, for the first time, we follow the star formation process of these early Universe objects using high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations, including mechanical feedback. Our results suggest that the first dark matter-less star clusters are top-heavy, with a higher abundance of massive stars compared to today's clusters and extremely high stellar mass surface densities compared to the local Universe.
