Abstract:This is the second of two papers, in which we study the problem of prescribing Webster scalar curvature on the CR sphere as a given function f. Using the Webster scalar curvature flow, we prove an existence result under suitable assumptions on the Morse indices of f.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of prescribing scalar curvature on n-sphere. Assume that the candidate curvature function $f$, which is allowed to change sign, satisfies some kind of Morse index or symmetry condition. By studying the well-known scalar curvature flow, we are able to prove that the flow converges to a metric with the prescribed function $f$ as its scalar curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of prescribing Webster scalar curvatures on compact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. In terms of the method of upper and lower solutions and the perturbation theory of selfadjoint operators, we can describe some sets of Webster scalar curvature functions which can be realized through pointwise CR conformal deformations and CR conformally equivalent deformations respectively from a given pseudo-Hermitian structure.
On the CR Nirenberg problem: density and multiplicity of solutions

Abstract:We prove some results on the density and multiplicity of positive solutions to the prescribed Webster scalar curvature problem on the $(2n+1)$-dimensional standard unit CR sphere $(\mathbb{S} ^{2n+1},\theta_0)$. Specifically, we construct arbitrarily many multi-bump solutions via the variational gluing method. In particular, we show the Webster scalar curvature functions of contact forms conformal to $\theta_0$ are $C^{0}$-dense among bounded functions which are positive somewhere. Existence results of infinitely many positive solutions to the related equation $-\Delta_{\mathbb{H}} u=R(\xi) u^{(n+2) /n}$ on the Heisenberg group $\Hn $ with $R(\xi)$ being asymptotically periodic with respect to left translation are also obtained. Our proofs make use of a refined analysis of bubbling behavior, gradient flow, Pohozaev identity, as well as blow up arguments.

The Sphere Theorems for Manifolds with Positive Scalar Curvature

Abstract:Some new differentiable sphere theorems are obtained via the Ricci flow and stable currents. We prove that if $M^n$ is a compact manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy the pointwise pinching condition $R_0>\sigma_{n}K_{\max}$, where $\sigma_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. This gives a partial answer to Yau's conjecture on pinching theorem. Moreover, we prove that if $M^n(n\geq3)$ is a compact manifold whose $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature satisfy the pointwise condition $Ric^{(n-2)}_{\min}>\tau_n(n-2)R_0,$ where $\tau_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We then extend the sphere theorems above to submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Finally we give a classification of submanifolds with weakly pinched curvatures, which improves the differentiable pinching theorems due to Andrews, Baker and the authors.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate Liu-Xu-Ye-Zhao's conjecture [30] and prove a sharp convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in spheres which improves the convergence theorem of Baker [2] as well as the differentiable sphere theorems of Gu-Xu-Zhao [16, 50, 52].

Abstract:We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential function is a certain "non-umbilicity" measure of $D$. On order to show convergence of the solution metrics $g_t$ as $t\to\infty$, we normalize the flow, and instead of a foliation consider a fiber bundle $\pi: M\to B$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g_0)$. In this case, if the "non-umbilicity" of $D$ is smaller in a sense then the "non-integrability", then the limit mixed scalar curvature function is positive. For integrable $D$, we give examples with foliated surfaces and twisted products.

New Sphere Theorems under Curvature Operator of the Second Kind

Abstract:We investigate Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ whose curvature operator of the second kind $\mathring{R}$ satisfies the condition \begin{equation*} \alpha^{-1} (\lambda_1 +\cdots +\lambda_{\alpha}) > - \theta \bar{\lambda}, \end{equation*} where $\lambda_1 \leq \cdots \leq \lambda_{(n-1)(n+2)/2}$ are the eigenvalues of $\mathring{R}$, $\bar{\lambda}$ is their average, and $\theta > -1$. Under such conditions with optimal $\theta$ depending on $n$ and $\alpha$, we prove two differentiable sphere theorems in dimensions three and four, a homological sphere theorem in higher dimensions, and a curvature characterization of Kähler space forms. These results generalize recent works corresponding to $\theta =0$ of Cao-Gursky-Tran, Nienhaus-Petersen-Wink, and the author. Moreover, examples are provided to demonstrate the sharpness of all results.

Abstract:We show the properties of the blowup limits of \KRf solutions on Fano surfaces if Riemannian curvature is unbounded. As an application, on every toric Fano surface, we prove that \KRf converges to a Kähler Ricci soliton metric if the initial metric has toric symmetry. Therefore we give a new Ricci flow proof of existence of Kähler Ricci soliton metrics on toric surfaces.

Abstract:We show that the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded for the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow on a Kahler manifold with semi-ample canonical bundle. In particular, the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow has long time existence if and only if the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded, for Kahler surfaces, projective manifolds of complex dimension three, and for projective manifolds of all dimensions if assuming the abundance conjecture.

Abstract:We prove the scalar curvature rigidity for $L^\infty$ metrics on $\mathbb S^n\backslash\Sigma$, where $\mathbb S^n$ is the $n$-dimensional sphere with $n\geq 3$ and $\Sigma$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb S^n$ of codimension at least $\frac{n}{2}+1$ that satisfies the wrapping property. The notion of wrapping property was introduced by the second author for studying related scalar curvature rigidity problems on spheres. For example, any closed subset of $\mathbb S^n$ contained in a hemisphere and any finite subset of $\mathbb S^n$ satisfy the wrapping property. The same techniques also apply to prove an analogous scalar rigidity result for $L^\infty$ metrics on tori that are smooth away from certain subsets of codimension at least $\frac{n}{2}+1$. As a corollary, we obtain a positive mass theorem for complete asymptotically flat spin manifolds with arbitrary ends for $L^\infty$ metrics.

Abstract:Given a smooth positive function defined on the standard half sphere endowed with its standard metric , we consider the problem of finding a metric conformally equivalent to and whose scalar curvature is equal to and the boundary mean curvature is equal to zero. Using careful study of Hopf-Poincaré counting index formulae, we prove the existence of many of such metrics provided that is close to the scalar curvature of . Such Counting index formulae are related to the topological contribution of solutions at the level sets of the associated approximate variational functional. The location of the levels of these solutions are given very precisely which leads to a new type of multiplicity results on half spheres. Such multiplicity results are proved without any assumptions of symmetry or periodicity on the function .

Abstract:The surgery technique of Gromov and Lawson may be used to construct families of positive scalar curvature metrics which are parameterised by Morse functions. This has played an important role in the study of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on a smooth manifold and its corresponding moduli spaces. In this paper, we extend this technique to work for families of generalised Morse functions, i.e. smooth functions with both Morse and birth-death singularities.

Abstract:Let N be a (n+1)-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold with a compact Cauchy hypersurface. We consider curvature flows in N with different curvature functions F (including the mean curvature, the gauss curvature and the second elementary symmetric polynomial) and a volume preserving term. Under suitable assumptions we prove the long time existence of the flow and the exponential convergence of the corresponding graphs in the $C^\infty$-topology to a hypersurface of constant F-curvature. Furthermore we examine stability properties and foliations of constant F-curvature hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We prove that the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow of a non-star-shaped, mean-convex embedded sphere in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with symmetry about an axis and sufficiently long, thick necks exists for all time and homothetically converges to a round sphere as $t \rightarrow \infty$. Our approach is based on a localized version of the parabolic maximum principle. We also present two applications of this result. The first is an extension of the Minkowski inequality to the corresponding non-star-shaped, mean-convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. The second is a connection between IMCF and minimal surface theory. Based on previous work by Meeks and Yau and using foliations by IMCF, we establish embeddedness of the solution to Plateau's problem and a finiteness property of stable immersed minimal disks for certain Jordan curves in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$.
