What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of performance degradation caused by salt deposition during the long-term operation of solar evaporators. Specifically, solar interface evaporation technology has shown great potential in alleviating freshwater shortages, but the deposition of salts on the evaporation surface limits the long-term stable operation of the evaporators. The paper proposes a novel solar evaporator design inspired by halophyte plants, which addresses this issue through salt dilution and secretion mechanisms. The design includes an absorber with a bundle cross-layer structure (BCL) and salt secretion bundles, which can effectively dilute and discharge salts, thereby achieving high-efficiency and stable evaporation performance. Additionally, it can maintain performance without degradation over long periods when dealing with saline water. Furthermore, the design achieves zero liquid discharge (ZLD), meaning all salts are effectively expelled from the evaporator surface without accumulating inside the device. This is of significant importance for applications such as seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and resource recovery.
