Abstract:By introducing Co2+ ions as a structural inducer, we have successfully synthesized five new Ln3+-cucurbit[5]urilbased supramolecular assemblies within the cucurbit[5]uril (Q[5]) system with rare-earth elements (Pr3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+ and Dy3+) by solvent evaporation method. A meticulous analysis of the crystal structure uncovers that the aforementioned assemblies constitute isomorphic 3D frameworks, which are stabilized through outersurface interactions of cucurbit[n]uril (OSIQ). Within these frameworks, Q[5] directly coordinates with rareearth metal ions to generate simple "Ln3+-Q[5]" molecular bowl structure. Six of these molecular bowls then arrange themselves to create a 3D honeycomb-like framework with channels occupied by the structure-guiding agent [Co(H2O)6]2+ through H-bond. Additionally, we explored the fluorescence sensing capabilities of the assembly 5 for amino acids, which indicate that it holds promise as a fluorescent sensor material, particularly for detecting L-Tryptophan (L-Try).

Abstract:Herein, bright green luminescent graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (GCNQDs) doped with oxygen and sulfur are prepared simply by microwave treatment of citric acid and thiourea. The as -obtained GCNQDs show excitation wavelength and pH dependent luminescence behaviors in the visible range. Besides, the GCNQDs exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield (31.67%), strong resistance to the interference of high ionic strength environment, and good biocompatibility as demonstrated by the cell viability assay. Thus, the resulting GCNQDs can be used as a promising fluorescent probe for HeLa cell imaging with low cytotoxicity, and have great potential in bioanalysis and related fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In recent years, host-guest interactions of macrocycles have emerged as a promising approach to effectively enhance pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence by inhibiting the nonradiative relaxation while isolating the effects of oxygen and water molecules. In this work, a supramolecular assembly Q[8]-BCPI was constructed by 6-bromoisoquinoline derivative (BCPI) and cucurbit[8]uril (Q[8]). The assembly produced intense green room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission and enabled supramolecular recognition and detection of l -tryptophan (L-Trp) and l -tyrosine (L-Tyr). Moreover, the Q[8]-BCPI assembly showed good biocompatibility and low biotoxicity, and had a good staining effect on HeLa cells.

Abstract:In recent years, most of the constructions on cucurbit[n]uril-based supramolecular polymers have been based on host–guest chemistry, however, this limits the choice of host and guest. Herein, we present a newly designed supramolecular polymer, namely Q[8]@PEG-HPTS formed by utilizing outer surface Q[8] interactions. In aqueous solution, the supramolecular polymer Q[8]@PEG-HPTS was obtained quickly and simply by mixing Q[8] with PEG-HPTS, where after, a variety of characterization techniques were employed to confirm the structure of the Q[8]@PEG-HPTS. The ability of this system to selectively recognize metal ions as well as pesticide molecules was also investigated; selectivity was observed for Fe3+ and paraquat. The biocompatibility and excellent fluorescence properties associated with the constituents of the supramolecular polymer allowed for the imaging of HeLa cells. This system could image and trace the nucleus through the cytoplasm, indicating that it could enter and internalize HeLa cells. Finally, by continuously adjusting the ratio between Q[8] and PEG-HPTS, a Q[8]@PEG-HPTS hydrogel was obtained. This hydrogel exhibited a stimulated temperature response, and opens up further possibilities for exploring the applications of such supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Herein, a cucurbit[ n ]uril carbon quantum dots (Q[6]-CQDs) has been synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method by using cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) and p -aminobenzenesulfonamide (SN), which characterized by UV–vis, FL, IR, XPS, XRD and TEM. The 1 H NMR spectra clearly showed that the rigid macrocyclic skeleton of Q[6] was retained during the synthesis of Q[6]-CQDs. In addition, the Q[6]@SN complex was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The particle size of the prepared Q[6]-CQDs is about ∼ 3.3 nm, which emits strong blue fluorescence and has good water solubility. Subsequently, 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) in aqueous solution was identified and detected by the change of fluorescence intensity of Q[6]-CQDs with a detection limit of 0.15 μM (27.62 μg/L), lower than the relevant standard of USEPA (300 μg/L), and the calculated recovery rate was between 98.90 % and 106.20 %, which provides a new analytical approach for the monitoring of 2,4-DNP in water.

Abstract:The carbon quantum dots termined with amine groups (CQDs-NH2) were synthesized in one-pot hydrothermal method with citric acid as carbon source and branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) as passive agent, which was then covalently linked to 1, 4, 7, 10-tetraazacyclononane (DOTA) framework to yield CQDs-DOTA. The CQDs-DOTA provide excellent ligand scaffolds for the chelation of lanthanide ions, yielding the related complexes CQDs-DOTA-Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb, Yb and Gd). The successful preparation of CQDs-DOTA-Ln was validated by TEM, XRD, XPS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The CQDs-DOTA-Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb and Yb) exhibited the characteristic emissions of related lanthanide ions, indicating the CQDs could sensitize the luminescence of lanthanide ions. Besides, the CQDs-DOTA-Gd could serve as an excellent T1-weighted MR imaging probe due to the chelation of paramagnetic Gd (III) ions and good hydrophilicity. The cytotoxicity of CQDs-DOTA-Ln was evaluated through MTT assay upon HeLa cells. The images from fluorescence microscopy further verified their applications in bioimaging in vitro. Due to the good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and high contrast efficiency, the CQDs-DOTA-Ln with Vis/NIR fluorescence and MR multi-modal imaging performance could be used as potential contrast agents for clinic applications.

Abstract:Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s) are a relatively young family of macrocycles, consisting of glycoluril units bridged by methylene groups, and their unique structures have attracted extensive attention from chemists in recent decades. Due to the presence of a rigid hydrophobic inner cavity and two polar outer portals lined with carbonyl groups, Q[n]s not only encapsulate guest species into the cavity, but also coordinate with metal ions/clusters. Considerable achievements have been obtained in the fields of Q[n]s-based host-guest chemistry, coordination chemistry, as well as the combination of host-guest and coordination chemistry. Furthermore, the outer surface of Q[n]s has been demonstrated to be capable of interacting with definite species to generate supramolecular architectures in recent years. With more in-depth research into Q[n]s, their application studies have also emerged as a hot topic. This Minireview focuses on recent advances in the potential applications of solid-state materials based on Q[n]s and their derivatives for the capture and adsorption of hazardous chemicals from a solution or a gas mixture.

Abstract:New photostable and bright supramolecular complexes based on cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) host and diketopyrrolopyrole (DPP) guest dyes having two positively charged 4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl groups were prepared; with spectra (H2O, abs. / emission max. 480 / 550 nm; e ~ 19 000, tfl > 4 ns), strong binding with hosts (~560 nM Kd) and a linker affording fluorescence detection of bioconjugates with antibody and nanobody. Combination of protein-functionalized DPP dye with CB7 improves photostability and affords up to 12-fold emission gain. Two-color confocal and stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy with 595 nm or 655 nm STED depletion lasers shows that the presence of CB7 not only leads to improved brightness and image quality, but also results in DPP becoming cell-permeable.

Abstract:Carbon-based "quantum" dots or carbon dots are surface-functionalized small carbon nanoparticles. For bright fluorescence emissions, the carbon nanoparticles may be surface-doped with an inorganic salt and then the same organic functionalization. In this study, carbon dots without and with the ZnS doping were prepared, followed by gel-column fractionation to harvest dots of 40% and 60% in fluorescence quantum yields, respectively. These highly fluorescent carbon dots were evaluated for optical imaging in mice, from which bright fluorescence images were obtained. Of particular interest was the observed competitive performance of the carbon dots in vivo to that of the well-established CdSe/ZnS QDs. The results suggest that carbon dots may be further developed into a new class of high-performance yet nontoxic contrast agents for optical bioimaging.

Abstract:The coumarin-modified tris[4-(4-pyridyl)phenyl]amine compound was encapsulated in the cavity of cucurbit[8]uril with a 2:3 stoichiometric ratio, which not only effectively enhances guest fluorescence emission with hypsochromic shift about 51 nm by macrocycle confinement, but also cascades assembling with β-cyclodextrin-grafted hyaluronic acid (HACD) to construct a ternary supramolecular network. Furthermore, doping with Sulfo-Cyanine 5 into β-cyclodextrin cavity of HACD through host-guest interaction achieved a high efficiency Föster resonance energy transfer system from supramolecular network to dyes, which successfully applied to the near-infrared mitochondria-targeted imaging in Hela cells.

Abstract:A novel CB[6]-based supramolecular assembly [K(ANS)(CB[6])2(DMF)2(H2O)0.5] (1) (CB[6] = cucurbit[6]uril, ANS- = 8-amino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid ion) was successfully synthesized under solvothermal condition. Performance studies have shown that 1 exhibited excellent chemical stability and recycling performance. Meanwhile, 1 exhibited remarkable potential as a fluorescence sensor for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and rifampicin (RFP) in both aqueous environments and practical samples. This sensing capability is achieved through fluorescence quenching, which offers fast response times and exceptional sensitivity, with detection limits of 0.19 μM for both TNP and 4-NP, and 0.21 μM for RFP. Even more remarkably, an anti-counterfeiting ink based on 1 and a portable test hydrogel were devised for encrypting information and visually detecting using a smartphone application. This work has the potential to expand the utilization of CB[6]-based materials in optical applications.

Their fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime are thereby enhanced owing to shielding of the dyes from water. Abstract:Different from most of the conventional platforms with dissatisfactory theranostic capabilities, supramolecular nanotheranostic systems have unparalleled advantages via the artful combination of supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology. Benefiting from the tunable stimuli-responsiveness and compatible hierarchical organization, host–guest interactions have developed into the most popular mainstay for constructing supramolecular nanoplatforms. Characterized by the strong and diverse complexation property, cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) shows great potential as important building blocks for supramolecular theranostic systems. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of CB[8]-based supramolecular theranostics regarding the design, manufacture and theranostic mechanism. Meanwhile, the current limitations and corresponding reasonable solutions as well as the potential future development are also discussed.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a new type of fluorescent QDs that consists mainly of carbon atoms. In this research, CQDs were synthesized through harsh oxidizing conditions applied on carbon black and subsequent N-doping using hexamethylenetetramine (Hexamine) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The synthesized CQDs were characterized using FTIR, AFM, UV-Visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and fluorescence imaging respectively. The AFM images showed that the dots are in the range of 2–8 nm. N-doping of the CQDs increased the PL intensity. The PL enhancement for the CQDs that were N-doped with PEI was higher compared to those N-doped with hexamine. The shift in PL by changing the excitation wavelength has been attributed to the nano-size of the CQDs, functional groups, defect traps, and quantum confinement effect. The in vitro fluorescence imaging revealed that N-doped CQDs can internalize into the cells and be used for fluorescent cell imaging.

Abstract:Abstract Organic small-molecule contrast agents have attracted considerable attention in the field of multispectral optoacoustic imaging, but their weak optoacoustic performance resulted from relatively low extinction coefficient and poor water solubility restrains their widespread applications. Herein, we address these limitations by constructing supramolecular assemblies based on cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). Two dixanthene-based chromophores (DXP and DXBTZ) are synthesized as the model guest compounds, and then included in CB[8] to prepare host-guest complexes. The obtained DXP-CB[8] and DXBTZ-CB[8] display red-shifted and increased absorption as well as decreased fluorescence, thereby leading to a substantial enhancement in optoacoustic performance. Biological application potential of DXBTZ-CB[8] is investigated after co-assembly with chondroitin sulfate A (CSA). Benefiting from the excellent optoacoustic property of DXBTZ-CB[8] and the CD44-targeting feature of CSA, the formulated DXBTZ-CB[8]/CSA can effectively detect and diagnose subcutaneous tumors, orthotopic bladder tumors, lymphatic metastasis of tumors and ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury in mouse models with multispectral optoacoustic imaging.
