Abstract:Protein Filaments Ultrastable protein filaments can be rendered electronically conductive through the incorporation of heme to produce nanowires that transfer electrons over micrometer distances. In addition, multilayer films of these nanowires produce current when exposed to humidity, presumably through water molecules ionizing carboxyl groups in the filaments and creating an unbalanced charge distribution that is enhanced by the heme groups.
