Abstract:The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is among the most important C-C bond-forming reactions available due to its reliability, chemoselectivity, and diversity. Aryl halides and pseudohalides such as iodides, bromides, and triflates are traditionally used as the electrophilic coupling partner. The expansion of the reaction scope to nontraditional electrophiles is an ongoing challenge to enable an even greater number of useful products to be made from simple starting materials. Herein, we present how an NHC-based Pd catalyst can enable Suzuki-Miyaura coupling where the C(acyl)-O bond of aryl esters takes on the role of electrophile, allowing the synthesis of various ketone-containing products. This contrasts known reactions of similar esters that provide biaryls via nickel catalysis. The underlying cause of this mechanistic divergence is investigated by DFT calculations, and the robustness of esters compared to more electrophilic acylative coupling partners is analyzed.

Abstract:The Sonogashira cross coupling between the monocarborane cluster 12-ethynylmonocarba-closo-dodecaborate [CB11H11-12-CCH]- and bromoarenes under Pd catalysis has been developed, providing access to aryl carboranyl alkynes in yields of 42-95%. The transformations proceed under mild conditions and with high functional group tolerance using commercially available coupling partners. X-ray structural analyses and the identification of an unusual phosphonium zwitterion byproduct are reported as well.

Abstract:Herein, we report a catalyst system for Pd-catalyzed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aroyl chlorides with boronic acids to furnish biaryls. This strategy is suitable for a broad range of common aroyl chlorides and boronic acids. The synthetic utility is highlighted in the direct late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products capitalizing on the presence of carboxylic acid moiety. Extensive mechanistic and DFT studies provide key insight into the reaction mechanism and high decarbonylative cross-coupling selectivity.

Abstract:A novel and efficient route to aryl N-aminosulfonamides via a palladium-catalyzed three-component coupling of arylboronic acids, sulfur dioxide and hydrazines in the presence of a balloon of dioxygen is reported. The reaction proceeded smoothly under mild conditions and DABCO·(SO(2))(2) was used as the source of sulfur dioxide.

Abstract:The palladium‐catalyzed three‐component coupling of aryl (hetero) methylsulfonamide, allyltributyltin and carbon dioxide (carboxylative Stille coupling reaction) was successfully conduced to produce β,γ‐unsaturated esters in satisfactory to good yields. Abstract:The Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of unsymmetric 1,3-disubstituted secondary allylic carbonates with arylboronic acids has been developed in a wet solvent under a base-free system to afford allyl-aryl coupling products in a high level of isolated yields with complete regio- and E/Z-selectivities with good to excellent chemoselectivities. The coupling reaction of optically active allyl carbonates gave allyl-aryl coupling products with excellent enantioselectivities with inversion of the stereochemistry. This coupling method was successfully applied to the synthesis of (S)-naproxen.

Abstract:A palladium catalyzed multicomponent cross-electrophile coupling involving sulfur dioxide under a metal-reductant free condition is presented here. Both aryl-alkyl and alkyl-alkyl sulfones could be successfully achieved. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that two Pd catalytic cycles are involved and SO2 exclusively coupled with aryl iodides rather than allylic acetates, which are consistent with the DFT studies.

Abstract:Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling of haloarenes is the most widely used protocol for the synthesis of biphenyls. Organosulfur compounds are promising electrophiles since they are abundant in nature and versatile in organic synthesis. We report here the desulfinylative Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling of aryl sulfoxides with phenylboronic acids using bench‐stable nickel/5‐(2,4,6‐triisopropylphenyl)imidazolylidene[1,5‐a]pyridines as the catalyst. The ligands are readily prepared from common commercial chemicals. The method is applicable to both symmetric and unsymmetric aryl sulfoxides, and a range of biphenyls bearing various functional groups were obtained in up to 94% yield.

Abstract:A series of O, N-chelated diarylborinates have been prepared and tested as arylboron counterpart alternative to oxygen-labile diarylborinic acids in palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling of aryl chlorides. 3-Dimethylaminopropyl diarylborinates (B-5a), featuring a six-membered O, N-chelated boron ring that was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, displayed a delicately balanced stability and reactivity. Their cross-coupling with structurally various aryl chlorides could be effected as efficiently as that of the parent diarylborinic acids by using 0.1∼1mol% Pd(OAc)2/IPr/P(OPh)3 as catalyst system, to provide the corresponding biaryls in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Robust N-heterocyclic carbene palladium complexes are highly efficient catalysts for direct alkylsulfonylation of (hetero) aryl-or alkenyl-boronic acids with potassium metabisulfite and (hetero)-alkyl-halides. Among them, acenaphthoimidazolylidene palladium(II) complexes exhibited the highest activities, and up to quantitative yields were obtained for diverse structurally distinct sulfones under very mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:A general and efficient palladium-catalyzed coupling of propargylic carbonates with organoboronic acids has been developed by identifying a commercially available semi-labile bidentated o-(diphenylphosphino) benzaldehyde as the effective ligand affording allenes under a set of very mild reaction conditions. Many functional groups are tolerated in this reaction, and high chirality transfer has also been realized in the presence of water leading to a very rapid reaction for the synthesis of easily racemized 1,3-diarylallenes. A rationale has been proposed to demonstrate the role of the ligand.

Abstract:The palladium-catalysed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) is currently the most commonly used reaction to construct carbon–carbon bonds in the pharmaceutical industry. Typical methods require the use of a base, which limits the substrate scope. To mitigate this shortcoming, substantial effort has been made to develop base-tolerant organoboron reagents, efficient catalysts and reaction conditions that do not require external bases. Still, many boronic acids cannot be used or must be independently protected, and many Lewis-basic functional groups poison the catalyst. Here we report a conceptually different SMC reaction that can proceed even under acidic conditions, with a broad substrate scope. Key to this advance is the formation of an acid-stable, palladium-based ion pair between the reaction partners that does not require base for subsequent productive transmetallation. Boronic acids that cannot be used directly in other SMC reactions, such as 2-pyridylboronic acid and boronic acids with strong Lewis bases, can now be used successfully.
