Abstract:Programming a complete IoT application usually requires separated programming for device, edge and/or cloud sides, which slows down the development process and makes the project hardly portable. Existing solutions tackle this problem by proposing a single coherent language while leaving two issues unsolved: efficient migration among the three sides and the platform dependency of the binaries.We propose WiProg, an integrated approach to IoT application programming based on WebAssembly. WiProg proposes an edge-centric programming approach that enables developers to write the IoT application as if it runs on the edge. This is achieved by the peripheral-accessing SDKs and annotations specifying the computation placement. WiProg automatically processes the program to insert auxiliary code and then compile it to WebAssembly. At runtime, WiProg leverages dynamic code offloading with compact memory snapshotting to achieve efficient execution. WiProg also provides interfaces for the customization of offloading policies. Results on real-world applications and computation benchmarks show that WiProg achieves an average reduction by 18.7%~54.3% and 20.1%~57.6% in terms of energy consumption and execution time.
ThingSpire OS: a WebAssembly-based IoT operating system for cloud-edge integration

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe advocate ThingSpire OS, a new IoT operating system based on WebAssembly for cloud-edge integration. By design, WebAssembly is considered as the first-class citizen in ThingSpire OS to achieve coherent execution among IoT device, edge and cloud. Furthermore, ThingSpire OS enables efficient execution of WebAssembly on resource-constrained devices by implementing a WebAssembly runtime based on Ahead-of-Time (AoT) compilation with a small footprint, achieves seamless inter-module communication wherever the modules locate, and leverages several optimizations such as lightweight preemptible invocation for memory isolation and control-flow integrity. We implement a prototype of ThingSpire OS and conduct preliminary evaluations on its inter-module communication performance.

Abstract:Web of Things (WoT) is an emerging concept to connect IoT devices to the web using standard interfaces. This provides interoperability between different IoT platforms and enables seamless integration with web and cloud services. However, running sophisticated web services directly on resource-constrained IoT devices is challenging due to limitations in memory, computation, and energy. This paper proposes WAWOT , a Wasm-based framework for flexible and efficient Web of Things services. WAWOT allows flexible WoT service development using annotations and automatic partitioning. It also enables dynamic service migration using WebAssembly modules to adapt placement between IoT devices and web clients. We also introduce an ahead-of-time compiler optimized for low memory usage through techniques like streamed compilation and trimming. For energy efficiency, we use optimizations like bulk instruction writing and direct I/O accessing. Safety is ensured through compile-time and run-time analyses to guarantee sandboxed execution. Evaluations demonstrate WAWOT exhibits better flexibility than existing WoT development approaches. Furthermore, WAWOT can also reduce RAM usage by 84.8× and energy consumption by 1.2-4.9× over existing WebAssembly runtimes. Overall, it enables efficient, safe, and flexible WoT services on constrained IoT devices.
Bringing Webassembly to Resource-Constrained Iot Devices for Seamless Device-Cloud Integration

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the progressive integration between IoT (Internet of Things) devices and the cloud server, which promotes the efficiency and interoperability of IoT applications. WebAssembly, known for its performance and portability, is considered a promising technology to bridge the heterogeneity between devices and the server. Nevertheless, resource-constrained devices, which are commonly deployed in the wild, have difficulty participating in this device-cloud integration because they can hardly run WebAssembly efficiently. Hence, we propose WAIT, a lightweight WebAssembly runtime on resource-constrained IoT devices for device-cloud integrated applications. WAIT is the first work to enable the Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compilation of WebAssembly on resource-constrained devices by leveraging several approaches to reduce memory usage. Moreover, WAIT introduces various safety checks at compile-time to guarantee the sandbox execution of WebAssembly and optimizes energy consumption for IoT devices. Results show that WAIT achieves 84.8× lower RAM usage compared with the state-of-the-art WebAssembly AOT runtime, and reduces energy consumption by 1.2×~4.9× while guaranteeing the sandboxed execution of WebAssembly modules.

Abstract:In modern software development, the JavaScript ecosystem of various frameworks and libraries used to develop contemporary web applications presents many advantages. JavaScript is a widely known interpreted programming language, simple to learn and start development, and with numerous third-party libraries and extensions. However, with the rise of highly user-interactive websites and browser-based games, in some cases, JavaScripts executable engine could lack in performance. Therefore, developers could combine several other programming languages to create a polyglot user-interactive interoperable system to develop efficient modern web applications. The interoperability modules offer significant advantages but also present challenges in the execution due to high complexity and longer compilation times. This paper explores WebAssembly, a binary format compilation target with a low-level assembly-like language used for targeting from other programming languages. The binary format allows near-native performance level due to its compactness, as it prioritizes usage of low-level languages. Moreover, as a continuation of our previous research of the GraalVM ecosystem, we analyzed a guest language implementation of a WebAssembly based system, TruffleWasm, hosted on GraalVM and Truffle Java framework. This paper presents the architecture and review of the TruffleWasm within the GraalVM-based ecosystem as well as from performance test results within our academic environment.
WebAssembly enables low latency interoperable augmented and virtual reality software

Abstract:There is a clear difference in runtime performance between native applications that use augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) device-specific hardware and comparable web-based implementations. Here we show that WebAssembly (Wasm) offers a promising developer solution that can bring near-native low latency performance to web-based applications, enabling hardware-agnostic interoperability at scale through portable bytecode that runs on any WiFi or cellular data network-enabled AR/VR device. Many software application areas have begun to realize Wasm's potential as a key enabling technology, but it has yet to establish a robust presence in the AR/VR domain. When considering the limitations of current web-based AR/VR development technologies such as WebXR, which provides an existing application programming interface (API) that enables AR/VR capabilities for web-based programs, Wasm can resolve critical issues faced with just-in-time (JIT) compilation, slow run-times, large file sizes and big data, among other challenges. Existing applications using Wasm-based WebXR are sparse but growing, and the potential for porting native applications to use this emerging framework will benefit the web-based AR/VR application space and bring it closer to its native counterparts in terms of performance. Taken together, this kind of standardized "write-once-deploy-everywhere" software framework for AR/VR applications has the potential to consolidate user experiences across different head-mounted displays and other compatible hardware devices to ultimately create an interoperable AR/VR ecosystem.

Stop Hiding The Sharp Knives: The WebAssembly Linux Interface

Abstract:WebAssembly is gaining popularity as a portable binary format targetable from many programming languages. With a well-specified low-level virtual instruction set, minimal memory footprint and many high-performance implementations, it has been successfully adopted for lightweight in-process memory sandboxing in many contexts. Despite these advantages, WebAssembly lacks many standard system interfaces, making it difficult to reuse existing applications. This paper proposes WALI: The WebAssembly Linux Interface, a thin layer over Linux's userspace system calls, creating a new class of virtualization where WebAssembly seamlessly interacts with native processes and the underlying operating system. By virtualizing the lowest level of userspace, WALI offers application portability with little effort and reuses existing compiler backends. With WebAssembly's control flow integrity guarantees, these modules gain an additional level of protection against remote code injection attacks. Furthermore, capability-based APIs can themselves be virtualized and implemented in terms of WALI, improving reuse and robustness through better layering. We present an implementation of WALI in a modern WebAssembly engine and evaluate its performance on a number of applications which we can now compile with mostly trivial effort.

StackSight: Unveiling WebAssembly through Large Language Models and Neurosymbolic Chain-of-Thought Decompilation

Abstract:WebAssembly enables near-native execution in web applications and is increasingly adopted for tasks that demand high performance and robust security. However, its assembly-like syntax, implicit stack machine, and low-level data types make it extremely difficult for human developers to understand, spurring the need for effective WebAssembly reverse engineering techniques. In this paper, we propose StackSight, a novel neurosymbolic approach that combines Large Language Models (LLMs) with advanced program analysis to decompile complex WebAssembly code into readable C++ snippets. StackSight visualizes and tracks virtual stack alterations via a static analysis algorithm and then applies chain-of-thought prompting to harness LLM's complex reasoning capabilities. Evaluation results show that StackSight significantly improves WebAssembly decompilation. Our user study also demonstrates that code snippets generated by StackSight have significantly higher win rates and enable a better grasp of code semantics.

CT-Wasm: Type-Driven Secure Cryptography for the Web Ecosystem

Abstract:A significant amount of both client and server-side cryptography is implemented in JavaScript. Despite widespread concerns about its security, no other language has been able to match the convenience that comes from its ubiquitous support on the "web ecosystem" - the wide variety of technologies that collectively underpins the modern World Wide Web. With the new introduction of the WebAssembly bytecode language (Wasm) into the web ecosystem, we have a unique opportunity to advance a principled alternative to existing JavaScript cryptography use cases which does not compromise this convenience. We present Constant-Time WebAssembly (CT-Wasm), a type-driven strict extension to WebAssembly which facilitates the verifiably secure implementation of cryptographic algorithms. CT-Wasm's type system ensures that code written in CT-Wasm is both information flow secure and resistant to timing side channel attacks; like base Wasm, these guarantees are verifiable in linear time. Building on an existing Wasm mechanization, we mechanize the full CT-Wasm specification, prove soundness of the extended type system, implement a verified type checker, and give several proofs of the language's security properties. We provide two implementations of CT-Wasm: an OCaml reference interpreter and a native implementation for <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Node.js" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and Chromium that extends Google's V8 engine. We also implement a CT-Wasm to Wasm rewrite tool that allows developers to reap the benefits of CT-Wasm's type system today, while developing cryptographic algorithms for base Wasm environments. We evaluate the language, our implementations, and supporting tools by porting several cryptographic primitives - Salsa20, SHA-256, and TEA - and the full TweetNaCl library. We find that CT-Wasm is fast, expressive, and generates code that we experimentally measure to be constant-time.

Webc: Toward A Portable Framework for Deploying Legacy Code in Web Browsers

Abstract:For security, most web applications are developed in some type-safe language, such as JavaScript or Java. However, there is a huge amount of legacy codes developed in unsafe languages, which provide rich functionality and are more efficient than their type-safe counterparts. To allow browsers to incorporate type-safe components in a secure way, previous approaches use the software-based fault isolation (SFI) to isolate untrusted legacy code. The SFI approach performs machine-code transformation for security, but the downside is the loss of architecture independence. We propose WebC, a system that allows legacy code transmitted over the web via the Low Level Virtual Machine (LLVM) bitcode format. The untrusted bitcode is transformed by WebC into code in the WebC security language, which enforces both memory isolation and control-flow integrity. Compared with previous approaches, WebC is more portable, provides stronger security, and allows more flexible memory management. Experimental results show that the average runtime overhead of WebC is modest.
Flexible Non-intrusive Dynamic Instrumentation for WebAssembly

Abstract:A key strength of managed runtimes over hardware is the ability to gain detailed insight into the dynamic execution of programs with instrumentation. Analyses such as code coverage, execution frequency, tracing, and debugging, are all made easier in a virtual setting. As a portable, low-level bytecode, WebAssembly offers inexpensive in-process sandboxing with high performance. Yet to date, Wasm engines have not offered much insight into executing programs, supporting at best bytecode-level stepping and basic source maps, but no instrumentation capabilities. In this paper, we show the first non-intrusive dynamic instrumentation system for WebAssembly in the open-source Wizard Research Engine. Our innovative design offers a flexible, complete hierarchy of instrumentation primitives that support building high-level, complex analyses in terms of low-level, programmable probes. In contrast to emulation or machine code instrumentation, injecting probes at the bytecode level increases expressiveness and vastly simplifies the implementation by reusing the engine's JIT compiler, interpreter, and deoptimization mechanism rather than building new ones. Wizard supports both dynamic instrumentation insertion and removal while providing consistency guarantees, which is key to composing multiple analyses without interference. We detail a fully-featured implementation in a high-performance multi-tier Wasm engine, show novel optimizations specifically designed to minimize instrumentation overhead, and evaluate performance characteristics under load from various analyses. This design is well-suited for production engine adoption as probes can be implemented to have no impact on production performance when not in use.

WaDec: Decompiling WebAssembly Using Large Language Model

Abstract:WebAssembly (abbreviated Wasm) has emerged as a cornerstone of web development, offering a compact binary format that allows high-performance applications to run at near-native speeds in web browsers. Despite its advantages, Wasm's binary nature presents significant challenges for developers and researchers, particularly regarding readability when debugging or analyzing web applications. Therefore, effective decompilation becomes crucial. Unfortunately, traditional decompilers often struggle with producing readable outputs. While some large language model (LLM)-based decompilers have shown good compatibility with general binary files, they still face specific challenges when dealing with Wasm. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach, WaDec, which is the first use of a fine-tuned LLM to interpret and decompile Wasm binary code into a higher-level, more comprehensible source code representation. The LLM was meticulously fine-tuned using a specialized dataset of wat-c code snippets, employing self-supervised learning techniques. This enables WaDec to effectively decompile not only complete wat functions but also finer-grained wat code snippets. Our experiments demonstrate that WaDec markedly outperforms current state-of-the-art tools, offering substantial improvements across several metrics. It achieves a code inflation rate of only 3.34%, a dramatic 97% reduction compared to the state-of-the-art's 116.94%. Unlike baselines' output that cannot be directly compiled or executed, WaDec maintains a recompilability rate of 52.11%, a re-execution rate of 43.55%, and an output consistency of 27.15%. Additionally, it significantly exceeds state-of-the-art performance in AST edit distance similarity by 185%, cyclomatic complexity by 8%, and cosine similarity by 41%, achieving an average code similarity above 50%.

Abstract:WebAssembly is the fourth officially endorsed Web language. It is recognized because of its efficiency and design, focused on security. Yet, its swiftly expanding ecosystem lacks robust software diversification systems. We introduce Wasm-Mutate , a diversification engine specifically designed for WebAssembly. Our engine meets several essential criteria: 1) To quickly generate functionally identical, yet behaviorally diverse, WebAssembly variants, 2) To be universally applicable to any WebAssembly program, irrespective of the source programming language, and 3) Generated variants should counter side-channels. By leveraging an e-graph data structure, Wasm-Mutate is implemented to meet both speed and efficacy. We evaluate Wasm-Mutate by conducting experiments on 404 programs, which include real-world applications. Our results highlight that Wasm-Mutate can produce tens of thousands of unique and efficient WebAssembly variants within minutes. Significantly, Wasm-Mutate can safeguard WebAssembly binaries against timing side-channel attacks, especially those of the Spectre type.

A fast in-place interpreter for WebAssembly

Abstract:WebAssembly (Wasm) is a compact, well-specified bytecode format that offers a portable compilation target with near-native execution speed. The bytecode format was specifically designed to be fast to parse, validate, and compile, positioning itself as a portable alternative to native code. It was pointedly not designed to be interpreted directly. Instead, design considerations at the time focused on competing with native code, utilizing optimizing compilers as the primary execution tier. Yet, in JIT scenarios, compilation time and memory consumption critically impact application startup, leading many Wasm engines to later deploy baseline (single-pass) compilers. Though faster, baseline compilers still take time and waste code space for infrequently executed code. A typical interpreter being infeasible, some engines resort to compiling Wasm not to machine code, but to a more compact, but easy to interpret format. This still takes time and wastes memory. Instead, we introduce in this article a fast in-place interpreter for WebAssembly, where no rewrite and no separate format is necessary. Our evaluation shows that in-place interpretation of Wasm code is space-efficient and fast, achieving performance on-par with interpreting a custom-designed internal format. This fills a hole in the execution tier space for Wasm, allowing for even faster startup and lower memory footprint than previous engine configurations.

Building Call Graph of WebAssembly Programs via Abstract Semantics

Abstract:WebAssembly is a binary format for code that is gaining popularity thanks to its focus on portability and performance. Currently, the most common use case for WebAssembly is execution in a browser. It is also being increasingly adopted as a stand-alone application due to its portability. The binary format of WebAssembly, however, makes it prone to being used as a vehicle for malicious software. For instance, one could embed a cryptocurrency miner in code executed by a browser. As a result, there is substantial interest in developing tools for WebAssembly security verification, information flow control, and, more generally, for verifying behavioral properties such as correct API usage. In this document, we address the issue of building call graphs for WebAssembly code. This is important because having or computing a call graph is a prerequisite for most inter-procedural verification tasks. In this paper, we propose a formal solution based on the theory of Abstract Interpretation. We compare our approach to the state-of-the-art by predicting how it would perform against a set of specifically crafted benchmark programs.

Abstract:We report on successfully porting the Tarski system for computing with Tarski formulas (Boolean combinations of polynomial sign conditions over the real numbers) to Javascript, thereby allowing it to run inside a browser. Tarski is an open-source software package, written in C/C++, that provides operations like formula simplification and quantifier elimination for Tarski formulas. Leveraging the Emscripten C++ to JavaScript/WebAssembly compiler tool, we were able to port Tarski to Javascript and offer it as a module (tarskijs) that can be embedded in other web-based projects. We report on two non-trivial examples of projects that do this. The first is a Tarski terminal (WebTarski) embedded in a webpage and running completely in-browser, thereby making Tarski available to almost anyone. The second is an experimental fork of the well-known dynamic geometry software package GeoGebra that uses tarskijs to provide new features that require real quantifier elimination. The module tarskijs is open source and freely available via GitHub.

Abstract:Purpose: Since 2010, there has been a great attention about HTML5. Application developers and browser makers fully embrace and support the web of the future. Consumers have started to embrace HTML5, especially as more users understand the benefits and potential that HTML5 can mean for the future.Modern browsers such as Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari are offering better and more robust support for HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. The idea is to introduce the HTML5 to medical physics community for open source software developments. The benefit of using HTML5 is developing portable software systems. Methods: The HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript programming languages were used to develop several applications for Quality Assurance in radiation therapy. The canvas element of HTML5 was used for handling and displaying the images, and JavaScript was used to manipulate the data. Sample application were developed to: 1. analyze the flatness and symmetry of the radiotherapy fields in a web browser, 2.analyze the Dynalog files from Varian machines, 3. visualize the animated Dynamic MLC files, 4. Simulation via Monte Carlo, and 5. interactive image manipulation. Results: The programs showed great performance and speed in uploading the data and displaying the results. The flatness and symmetry program and Dynalog file analyzer ran in a fraction of second. The reason behind this performance is using JavaScript language which is a lower level programming language in comparison to the most of the scientific programming packages such as Matlab. The second reason is that JavaScript runs locally on client side computers not on the web-servers. Conclusions: HTML5 and JavaScript can be used to develop useful applications that can be run online or offline on different modern web-browsers. The programming platform can be also one of the modern web-browsers which are mostly open source (such as Firefox).

Abstract:The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT), edge, and embedded devices in the past decade has introduced numerous challenges in terms of security and configuration management. Simultaneously, advances in cloud-native development practices have greatly enhanced the development experience and facilitated quicker updates, thereby enhancing application security. However, applying these advances to IoT, edge, and embedded devices remains a complex task, primarily due to the heterogeneous environments and the need to support devices with extended lifespans. WebAssembly and the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI) has emerged as a promising technology to bridge this gap. As WebAssembly becomes more popular on IoT, edge, and embedded devices, there is a growing demand for hardware interface support in WebAssembly programs. This work presents WASI proposals and proof-of-concept implementations to enable hardware interaction with I2C and USB, which are two commonly used protocols in IoT, directly from WebAssembly applications. This is achieved by running the device drivers within WebAssembly as well. A thorough evaluation of the proof of concepts shows that WASI-USB introduces a minimal overhead of at most 8% compared to native operating system USB APIs. However, the results show that runtime initialization overhead can be significant in low-latency applications.

ROS2WASM: Bringing the Robot Operating System to the Web

Abstract:The Robot Operating System (ROS) has become the de facto standard middleware in robotics, widely adopted across domains ranging from education to industrial applications. The RoboStack distribution has extended ROS's accessibility by facilitating installation across all major operating systems and architectures, integrating seamlessly with scientific tools such as PyTorch and Open3D. This paper presents ROS2WASM, a novel integration of RoboStack with WebAssembly, enabling the execution of ROS 2 and its associated software directly within web browsers, without requiring local installations. This approach significantly enhances reproducibility and shareability of research, lowers barriers to robotics education, and leverages WebAssembly's robust security framework to protect against malicious code. We detail our methodology for cross-compiling ROS 2 packages into WebAssembly, the development of a specialized middleware for ROS 2 communication within browsers, and the implementation of a web platform available at www.ros2wasm.dev that allows users to interact with ROS 2 environments. Additionally, we extend support to the Robotics Toolbox for Python and adapt its Swift simulator for browser compatibility. Our work paves the way for unprecedented accessibility in robotics, offering scalable, secure, and reproducible environments that have the potential to transform educational and research paradigms.

Abstract:The Internet-of-Things (IoT) has created a complex environment where hardware and software interact in complex ways. Despite being a prime candidate for applying well-established software engineering practices, IoT has not seen the same level of adoption as other areas, such as cloud development. This discrepancy is even more evident in the case of edge devices, where programming and managing applications can be challenging due to their heterogeneous nature and dependence on specific toolchains and languages. However, the emergence of WebAssembly as a viable solution for running high-level languages on some devices presents an opportunity to streamline development practices, such as DevOps. In this paper, we present WASMICO — a firmware and command-line utility that allows for the execution and management of application lifecycles in microcontrollers. Our solution has been benchmarked against other state-of-the-art tools, demonstrating its feasibility, novel features, and empirical evidence that it outperforms some of the most widely used solutions for running high-level code on these devices. Overall, our work aims to promote the use of well-established software engineering practices in the IoT domain, helping to bridge the gap between cloud and edge development.
