Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to report on controlled observations that were designed to engage schizophrenic behavior and psychopharmacological effects from the same point of view. I t was hoped that the two areas of observation will suggest a more comprehensive understanding of the schizophrenic process than currently entertained. The question of what constitutes schizophrenic behavior is still a very acute one. Pharmacological agents have given us some leverage by which the behavior of the schizophrenic patient can be modified. Phenothiazines appear to be the most active ones to dale. Induced psychoses, that is, induced behavior that is characterized by a break of the person with reality as appreciated hitherto by him and others, have also cast some light on this issue. Just the same, our understanding of schizophrenic behavior is largely descriptive and mainly based on the observations of Bleulerl published exactly one-half century ago. In the present article the word behavior stands for any activity of the person that can be verifiably observed. A change of electrical activity of a particular brain area would qualify as behavior even if no overt movement results from it, as long as such a change is testable. Overt behavior in schizophrenia is not always the most significant. Williams and Walker2 found a variety of patients “whose overt behavior can be rated very reliably as non-deviant but who under direct questioning report experiencing auditory hallucinations.” The most penetrating observations are still that of Bleuler and the more recent ones of Hoch and cow o r k e r ~ . ~ ~ ~ Accordingly, even hallucinations or delusions are not the fundamental aspects of the illness. Withdrawal and autism, although surely very characteristic, are still not the primary features. What is considered essentially schizophrenic by these and a great many other authors could be condensed in a fully developed case as follows. The patient feels and acts in one way, while his thoughts and words are of a different order. He is unable to distinguish which activities are his and which are not. This produces in him an utter helplessness; the patient appears to be maneuvered from outside, by a machine, or by some benign or malevolent forces. And as he does not seem to know what he wants or what he will do next, his verbal associations are not conative, not goal-striven. I t is essential to schizophrenic behavior that there is a simultaneous clarity of sensorium, an undisturbed registration of the perceptual articulations of the environment, excepting the extremc cases of excitement and panic. We can see that an ordinary toxic delirium is not the same form of behavior. Even LSD psychosis appears to be very different. The hearing of noises, the seeing of lights where there are none, is not frequent in schizophrenia. The Thus schizophrenic behavior appears an illusive one.
