Abstract:Interfacial buffer layers have a decisive impact on the performance and stability of organic solar cells. This review summarizes representative hole transporting materials, including organics, graphene‐based molecules, and transition metal oxides, in an attempt to highlight the role of hole transport layers in regulating charge transport, tuning energy levels, reducing potential barriers, and reducing interfacial recombination losses. Recently, organic solar cells (OSCs) have received rapid boosts in the power conversion efficiency (PCE), due to progresses in materials and device engineering. Several groups have reported champion PCEs over 19% in single‐junction, ternary, and tandem OSCs. In addition to the concentrated focus on the new design of OSC active materials, buffer layer materials, used for the interface layer providing the functionalities of interface charge transport and collection in OSCs, are of critical importance for the optimization of PCE. Compared with the electron transport layers (ETL), the hole transport layers (HTLs) have received less attention and are still dominated by the commercial material poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), which has limitations for the efficiency and OSC device stability enhancement. In this Review, the recent progress in HTL materials, including the modifications for PEDOT:PSS, alternative HTL materials based on polymers and inorganic oxide materials, etc, is summarized. This review also provides a summative prospect aiming to help scientists apprehend the current possibilities and challenges in this field.

Abstract:Global energy demand is increasing; thus, emerging renewable energy sources, such as organic solar cells (OSCs), are fundamental to mitigate the negative effects of fuel consumption. Within OSC’s advancements, the development of efficient and stable interface materials is essential to achieve high performance, long-term stability, low costs, and broader applicability. Inorganic and nanocarbon-based materials show a suitable work function, tunable optical/electronic properties, stability to the presence of moisture, and facile solution processing, while organic conducting polymers and small molecules have some advantages such as fast and low-cost production, solution process, low energy payback time, light weight, and less adverse environmental impact, making them attractive as hole transporting layers (HTLs) for OSCs. This review looked at the recent progress in metal oxides, metal sulfides, nanocarbon materials, conducting polymers, and small organic molecules as HTLs in OSCs over the past five years. The endeavors in research and technology have optimized the preparation and deposition methods of HTLs. Strategies of doping, composite/hybrid formation, and modifications have also tuned the optical/electrical properties of these materials as HTLs to obtain efficient and stable OSCs. We highlighted the impact of structure, composition, and processing conditions of inorganic and organic materials as HTLs in conventional and inverted OSCs.

Efficient Hole Transport Layers With Widely Tunable Work Function For Deep Homo Level Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Hole transport layers (HTLs) with large work function (WF) tuning ability for good energy level alignment with deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level donor materials are desirable for high-performance and high open-circuit voltage (V-OC) organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a novel low-temperature and solution-process approach to achieve WF tuning in HTLs is proposed. Specifically, the HTLs made from 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzylphosphonic acid (F5BnPA) incorporated graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum oxide (MoOx) solution (representing two possible classes of HTLs where carriers transport via valence and conduction bands, respectively) offer continuous WF tuning (the tuning range as large as 0.81 eV) by controlling F5BnPA's concentration. By employing a deep HOMO donor material, OSCs using the composite HTLs can achieve improved performances with largely increased V-OC (0.92 V for GO:F5BnPA versus 0.65 V for pristine GO; 0.91 V for MoOx:F5BnPA versus 0.88 V for pristine MoOx). The enhanced performance can be experimentally and theoretically explained by the decreased hole injection barrier (HIB) for GO or equivalent HIB (i.e. electron extraction barrier) for MoOx and enhanced surface recombination velocity, which contribute to eliminating S-shaped current-voltage characteristics. Consequently, the incorporation of F5BnPA can efficiently tune HTL WF for high V-OC OSCs and extend HTL applications in organic electronics.

Abstract:In this review, it is summarized the latest progress in solution‐processed hole transporting layer (HTL) materials for OSCs, including PEDOT:PSS, conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), TMOs, polyoxometalates (POMs) and others. The working mechanism, material characteristics, and existing problems of HTL materials are comprehensively analyzed. In addition, it is also provided some perspectives to help researchers understand the challenges and opportunities in this field. Solution‐processed hole transporting layers (HTLs) not only play a crucial role in realizing high performance of organic solar cells (OSCs), but also possess excellent compatibility with low‐cost and large‐area processing methods of industrialized productions. However, the number and species of HTL materials are obviously fewer than that of electron‐transporting materials, which limits the development and application of OSCs. In particular, the large energy level difference between anode and organic active layer leads to the serious energy barrier for hole collection, bringing much difficulty in developing efficient HTL materials. In this review, it is focused on the recent advances in solution‐processed HTLs in OSCs. Initially, the working mechanism, property requirement, and existing issues of solution‐processed HTLs are systematically analyzed. Afterward, the main classes of solution‐processed HTL materials are discussed, including PEDOT:PSS, conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), TMOs, and others. The structure‐property relationships of solution‐processed HTL materials are analyzed, and some important design rules for such materials toward efficient and stable OSCs are presented. Finally, a brief summary is presented along with some perspectives to help researchers understanding the challenges and opportunities in this field.

Abstract:Hole transporting layers (HTLs) are an essential component in inverted, p‐i‐n perovskite solar cells (PSCs) where they play a decisive role in extraction and transport of holes, surface passivation, perovskite crystallization, device stability and cost. Currently, the exploration of efficient, stable, highly transparent and low‐cost HTLs is of vital importance for propelling p‐i‐n PSCs toward commercialization. Compared to their inorganic counterparts, organic HTLs offer multiple advantages such as a tunable bandgap and energy levels, easy synthesis and purification, solution processability and overall low cost. In this review, recent progress of organic HTLs, including conductive polymers, small molecules and self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs), as utilized in inverted PSCs is systematically reviewed and summarized. Their molecular structure, hole transport properties, energy levels and relevant device properties and resulting performances are presented and analyzed. A summary of design principles and a future outlook towards highly efficient organic HTLs in inverted PSCs is proposed. Abstract:Huge energy consumption and running out of fossil fuels has led to the advancement of renewable sources of power, including solar, wind, and tide. Among them, solar cells have been well developed with the significant achievement of silicon solar panels, which are popularly used as windows, rooftops, public lights, etc. In order to advance the application of solar cells, a flexible type is highly required, such as layered casting solar cells (LCSCs). Organic solar cells (OSCs), perovskite solar cells (PSCs), or dye-sensitive solar cells (DSSCs) are promising LCSCs for broadening the application of solar energy to many types of surfaces. LCSCs would be cost-effective, enable large-scale production, are highly efficient, and stable. Each layer of an LCSC is important for building the complete structure of a solar cell. Within the cell structure (active material, charge carrier transport layer, electrodes), hole transport layers (HTLs) play an important role in transporting holes to the anode. Recently, diverse HTLs from inorganic, organic, and organometallic materials have emerged to have a great impact on the stability, lifetime, and performance of OSC, PSC, or DSSC devices. This review summarizes the recent advances in the development of inorganic, organic, and organometallic HTLs for solar cells. Perspectives and challenges for HTL development and improvement are also highlighted.

Abstract:In this work, we developed WS2 nanosheets (WS2 NS) doped into PEDOT:PSS (PEDOT:PSS/WS2 NS) as an efficient hole transport layer (HTL) for organic solar cells (OSCs). WS2 NS is obtained by a simple and cost-effective liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method. The results show that the PEDOT:PSS:WS2 NS anode interlayer has higher work function, reduced roughness and improved hole mobility. The devices based on PEDOT:PSS:WS2 NS interlayer show enhanced extraction and transportation of holes and improved fill factor and short-circuit current density. Based on PM6:Y6, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 14.35% to 15.67% after WS2 NS doping.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing attention because of their desirable properties. A key advance has been the replacement of the liquid electrolytes by solid-state hole-transporting materials (HTMs), which not only improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) but also enhances the cell stability. HTMs are now an integral part of PSCs. Both organic and inorganic HTMs have found application in PSCs. However, inorganic HTMs are hampered by the limited choice of materials and the relatively low PCE of the solar cells based on them. The development of new organic HTMs is therefore necessary to improve the PCE and stability of PSCs. This has become a focus of various research fields, and new HTMs continue to emerge in large numbers. In this paper, we give an overview of the use of organic HTMs in PSCs. According to their molecular weight, organic HTMs are classified as either molecular or polymeric. We discuss in detail the effects of the functional groups and structures of organic HTMs on the PCE, fill factor, open circuit voltage, and stability of the resulting PSCs, as developed in recent years. The paper also covers the highest occupied molecular orbitals, the hole mobility, and the use of additives in HTMs. Finally, forecasts of the future development of organic HTMs are reviewed.
Solution-processed polymer bilayer heterostructures as hole-transport layers for high-performance opaque and semitransparent organic solar cells

Abstract:Interfacial layer materials such as hole-transport layers (HTLs) are critical to realizing high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs). However, most OSCs are relying on a prominent HTL material of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with the hygroscopic and acidic feature, which induces poor device stability and limited power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Here, a novel type of HTLs is developed by combining intrinsically stable poly(triarylamine) (PTAA) with modified PEDOT:PSS for efficient opaque and semitransparent OSCs with good stability. Using diluted solution processing, isopropanol-diluted PEDOT:PSS (ID-PEDOT:PSS) is deposited onto hydrophobic PTAA to improve interfacial compatibility, thereby forming a fitted polymer bilayer heterostructure HTL of PTAA/ID-PEDOT:PSS with high film quality and transparency. For applications in OSCs with a nonfullerene acceptor (M36), the resulting opaque devices deliver an improved PCE of 14.45%, much higher than 5.72% and 13.21% for the pure PTAA and PEDOT:PSS HTLs-based devices, respectively. The stability of the PTAA/ID-PEDOT:PSS-based OSCs is improved simultaneously, where a normalized PCE for the device storage over three months retains above 80%, much better than those of devices with other two HTLs. This novel HTL is further used to achieve efficient and stable semitransparent M36-based devices for the first time, exhibiting an outstanding PCE of 12.34% at a high average visible transmittance of 25.56%. These findings provide an excellent semiconducting interlayer candidate to develop promising opaque and semitransparent OSCs.

Abstract:Interfaces in perovskite and organic solar cells play a central role in advancing efficiency and prolong device durability. They improve charge transport/transfer from the absorber layer to the collecting electrodes, while also blocking the opposite charge carriers, minimize voltage losses by suppressing charge recombination. and may act as buffer/protective layers and nanomorphology regulators for the absorber layer. One such interface is formed by the hole transport layer (HTL) and the organic/perovskite absorber. These HTLs typically consist of organic semiconductors, which, although are solution processable at low temperatures and allow perfect energy‐level alignment with the absorber layer and therefore efficient charge collection, are prone to degradation in ambient conditions and under continuous light exposure. In a quest for robust alternatives, inorganic materials such as metal oxides, graphene oxide, bronzes, copper thiocyanate, and transition metal dichalcogenides are actively investigated. However, their hole extraction capability is inferior compared with organic semiconductors as they possess specific energetics leading to significant charge extraction barriers and moderate charge collection. To achieve further advancements in their hole transporting capabilities, strongly interconnecting knowledge of their synthesis, electronic properties, and device performance metrics is required. State‐of‐the‐art perovskite and organic solar cells use inorganic hole transport materials (HTMs) due to their superior electronic properties. These HTMs are, however, expensive and prone to degradation. A range of robust inorganic HTMs are emerging, that provide a trade‐off between efficiency, stability, and cost, and are critically reviewed herein.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been brought into sharp focus in the photovoltaic field due to their excellent performance in recent years. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) has reached to be 25.2% in state-of-the-art PSCs due to the outstanding intrinsic properties of perovskite materials as well as progressive optimization of each functional layer, especially the active layer and hole transporting layer (HTL). In this review, we mainly discuss various hole transporting materials (HTMs) consisting of HTL in PSCs. The progress in PSCs is firstly introduced, then the roles of HTL playing in photovoltaic performance improvement of PSCs are emphasized. Finally, we generally categorize HTMs into organic and inorganic groups and demonstrate both their advantages and disadvantages. Specially, we introduce several typical organic HTMs such as P3HT, PTTA, PEDOT:PSS, spiro-OMeTAD, and inorganic HTMs such as copper-based materials (CuOx, CuSCN, CuI, etc.), nickel-based materials (NiOx), and two-dimensional layered materials (MoS2, WS2, etc.). On basis of reviewing the reported HTMs in recent years, we expect to provide some enlightenment for design and application of novel HTMs that can be used to further promote PSCs performance.

Abstract:Conventional self-assembled monolayer (SAM) hole transporters in organic solar cells (OSCs) generally suffer from poor uniformity and limited thickness tolerance, hindering their large-scale production. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel polymeric hole transporter synthesized by polymerizing carbazole phosphonic acid (PACz). The resultant Poly-2PACz material exhibits exceptional conductivity, high tolerance for variations in layer thickness, and improved film uniformity compared with conventional SAMs. Consequently, the OSCs utilizing Poly-2PACz achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 19.1% and a high fill factor of 81.2%, surpassing the devices based on 2PACz. Moreover, Poly-2PACz-based OSCs demonstrate excellent operational stability, retaining over 80% of their initial efficiency after 1,400 h of continuous light exposure in ambient conditions. This work presents a novel strategy for designing hole transporters, paving the way for more efficient and stable OSCs.

Printable Hole Transport Layer for 1.0 cm 2 Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Currently, most of the hole transport layers (HTLs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) are unable to meet the requirements of printing preparation, which imposes restrictions on the commercial process of the OSCs severely. Here, we report a printable HTL, PCPDTK0.50H0.50-TT. The PM6:Y6:PC71BM device with PCPDTK0.50H0.50-TT as an HTL exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.3% (with an area of 0.04 cm2). More importantly, the PCE of the device is up to 10.2%, with an area of 1.0 cm2 prepared by the wire-bar coating PCPDTK0.50H0.50-TT HTL, which is in favor of the printing fabrication of the OSCs. Abstract:During past several years, the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved rapid progress with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 18%, demonstrating a great practical application prospect. The development of material science including conjugated polymer donors, oligomer-like organic molecule donors, fused and nonfused ring acceptors, polymer acceptors, single-component organic solar cells and water/alcohol soluble interface materials are the key research topics in OSC field. Herein, the recent progress of these aspects is systematically summarized. Meanwhile, the current problems and future development are also discussed.

Efficient Hole Transport Layer for Organic Solar Cell Based on Exfoliated-MoS 2 Doped PEDOT

Abstract:We report an efficient hole transporting layer (HTL) for organic solar cell (OSC) based on solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid composed of ultrasonic-exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets and dopamine-copolymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivative (DA-P). The OSCs based on this new hybrid HTL show a marked performance improvement over those with single-component HTLs, and they retain up to 80% of their original power conversion efficiency after 35 days. Our investigations reveal that the boost in performance is due to a synergistic effect that improves both hole transport and extraction ability. This effect is mainly due to the doping of exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets on DA-P. We employ a comprehensive range of spectroscopies to uncover that the dopant is derived from the oxidation products of MoS2 nanosheets during the ultrasonic exfoliation. Our work demonstrates an efficient hybrid HTL and offers new insights into the interaction of exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets and the PEDOT derivatives.
A Review of Inorganic Hole Transport Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Abstract This review presents various hole transport layers (HTLs) employed in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in pursuing high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and functional stability. The PSCs have achieved high PCE (over 23%, certified by NREL) and more efforts have been devoted into research for stability enhancement. Inorganic HTLs become a popular choice as selective contact materials because of their intrinsic chemical stability and low cost. HTLs and electron transport layers (ETLs) are critical components of PSCs due to the requirement to create charge collection selectivity. Herein the authors provide an overview on inorganic HTLs synthesis, properties, and their application in various PSCs for both mesoporous and planar architectures. Inorganic HTLs with appropriate properties, such as proper energy level and high carrier mobility, can not only assist with charge transport, but also improve the stability of PSCs under ambient conditions. The importance of interfacial chemistry and interfacial charge transport is further addressed to understand the underlying mechanism of related degradation and carrier dynamic. It is expected that the success of the inorganic HTL in PSCs can stimulate further research and bring real impact for future photovoltaic technologies.

Interfacial Materials for Organic Solar Cells: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have shown great promise as low‐cost photovoltaic devices for solar energy conversion over the past decade. Interfacial engineering provides a powerful strategy to enhance efficiency and stability of OSCs. With the rapid advances of interface layer materials and active layer materials, power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of both single‐junction and tandem OSCs have exceeded a landmark value of 10%. This review summarizes the latest advances in interfacial layers for single‐junction and tandem OSCs. Electron or hole transporting materials, including metal oxides, polymers/small‐molecules, metals and metal salts/complexes, carbon‐based materials, organic‐inorganic hybrids/composites, and other emerging materials, are systemically presented as cathode and anode interface layers for high performance OSCs. Meanwhile, incorporating these electron‐transporting and hole‐transporting layer materials as building blocks, a variety of interconnecting layers for conventional or inverted tandem OSCs are comprehensively discussed, along with their functions to bridge the difference between adjacent subcells. By analyzing the structure–property relationships of various interfacial materials, the important design rules for such materials towards high efficiency and stable OSCs are highlighted. Finally, we present a brief summary as well as some perspectives to help researchers understand the current challenges and opportunities in this emerging area of research.
Finetuning Hole-Extracting Monolayers for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Interface layers used for electron transport (ETL) and hole transport (HTL) often significantly enhance the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Surprisingly, interface engineering for hole extraction has received little attention thus far. By finetuning the chemical structure of carbazole-based self-assembled monolayers with phosphonic acid anchoring groups, varying the length of the alkane linker (2PACz, 3PACz, and 4PACz), these HTLs were found to perform favorably in OSCs. Compared to archetypal PEDOT:PSS, the PACz monolayers exhibit higher optical transmittance and lower resistance and deliver a higher short-circuit current density and fill factor. Power conversion efficiencies of 17.4% have been obtained with PM6:BTP-eC9 as the active layer, which was distinctively higher than the 16.2% obtained with PEDOT:PSS. Of the three PACz derivatives, the new 3PACz consistently outperforms the other two monolayer HTLs in OSCs with different state-of-the-art nonfullerene acceptors. Considering its facile synthesis, convenient processing, and improved performance, we consider that 3PACz is a promising interface layer for widespread use in OSCs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In the last 12 years, conventional solar cells, especially silicon-based, have increased their efficiency by 1.1%; however, the energy transformation efficiency of perovskite-based photovoltaics has reached from 3.8% to 25.7% within the same time frame. Perovskite solar cells have been evolved as captivating domain of research in recent years by virtue of phenomenal intrinsic properties exhibited by perovskite materials and gradual optimization of hole transport layer along with perovskite film. This review paper elaborates various materials utilized as hole transport layers in perovskite solar cells. Firstly, the origin of perovskite-based cells is described followed by their configuration/ structure. The paper then elaborates the function of hole transport layer in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells. Further, it throws light on categorization of hole transport materials in organic and inorganic group including their advantages and disadvantages. Particularly, the organic hole transport materials, viz. PTAA, PEDOT:PSS, P3HT, Spiro-OMeTAD, and inorganic hole transport materials, viz. CuO x , CuSCN, CuI, NiO x and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) were briefly elaborated. Through this review paper, the design and applications of recently synthesized hole transport materials that promote the device performance of perovskite solar cells have been also discussed.
