Abstract:We report the high repetition frequency dual-wavelength pulse laser output of Pr3+:YLF at 604 and 639 nm. We discuss the relationship between the threshold powers of the dual-wavelength laser with the insertion of a Fabry-Perot etalon and numerically solve the corresponding four-level rate equations. Based on the results, we designed and conducted the experimental research. Then we obtained dual-wavelength pulse laser output at different repetition frequencies. When the repetition frequency is 40 kHz and the maximum absorbed pump power is 2.723 W, the output power at 604 and 639 nm are 27 and 25 mW, respectively. This study provides a simplest method for direct output of dual-wavelength visible pulsed laser.

Abstract:Abstract This paper proposes a blue LD pumping Pr:YLF crystal acousto-optic Q-switched double pulse laser with 639 nm red light output. The output principle of the Pr:YLF double pulse laser is demonstrated, and a four level differential rate equation model is established to describe the distribution of the double pulse sequence at a high repetition frequency. When the laser repetition frequency is 10 kHz, the double step signal generator, as the modulator of the acousto-optic Q-switching, turns on the Q-switching twice in one pumping period, and obtains the maximum output power of 144 mW, pulse energy of 7.1 μ J and the output of visible light double pulse with the pulse interval of 20 μ s.

Abstract:Femtosecond pulse generation from diode-pumped praseodymium (Pr) lasers in the near-infrared has been a long pursuit for the optics community. Utilizing the Pr:LiYF4 crystal in a novel dispersion arrangement scheme that includes a set of triple Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors, mode-locked ultrashort pulses as short as 451 fs at 915 nm have been achieved when the crystal is directly pumped by a blue laser-diode. The pulse energy is 3 nJ and peak power is 7.2 kW at the repetition rate of 85.5 MHz. This is the first demonstration of diode-pumped Pr lasers arriving the femtosecond regime.

Abstract:We have proposed a composite upper energy level mechanism to achieve an LD-pumped continuous wave (CW) high power widely tunable green lasers based on Pr 3+ :YLF crystal. Efficient laser emissions were demonstrated under 444 nm pumping corresponding to the composite laser energy level transitions of 3 P 1 → 3 H 5 , 3 P 0 → 3 H 5 and 1 I 6 → 3 H 5 . The total tuning range covers from 519.0 to 550.5 nm (∼31.5 nm). In response to challenges posed by limited emission cross-sections in the π-polarization, we demonstrate the efficacy of σ-polarization to complement these gaps. When the pump power of 11.4 W was absorbed, 4.88 W of 522 nm laser output was obtained in the π-polarization direction with the maximum slope efficiency of 59%, and 1.46 W of 538.0 nm laser output was acquired in the σ-polarization.

Abstract:We report an all-solid-state near-infrared single-frequency (single longitudinal mode, SLM) Pr3+:LiYF4 (Pr:YLF) laser with the spectral linewidth at the sub-picometer level. The SLM lasers with center wavelengths of 868 and 907 nm are realized in Pr:YLF crystal for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The maximum output powers of SLM lasers at 868 and 907 nm are 102 and 213mW, corresponding to the narrowest spectral linewidths of 82 MHz (0.21 pm) and 94 MHz (0.26 pm), respectively. At the maximum output power, the beam quality factors in the x and y directions are measured as 1.25 and 1.16 at 868 nm and 1.21 and 1.13 at 907 nm, respectively. The output power stabilities of the 868 and 907 nm SLM lasers are calculated as 1.39% and 0.87%, respectively. The successful realization of 868 and 907 nm all-solid-state SLM lasers makes up for the gap that the Pr:YLF SLM lasers developed in the past are focused on the visible region, enriches the types of near-infrared (NIR) SLM lasers, and can provide practical applications in biomedicine, cold atom physics, and optical atom manipulation.

Abstract:We demonstrate the performance of a 968-nm laser-diode (LD) side-pumped Er,Pr:YAP laser in free-running and electro-optical (EO) Q-switched modes with emission at 2.7 mu m, respectively. In the free-running mode, a maximum power of 11 W is achieved at a working frequency of 150 Hz and a pulse width of 200 mu s, corresponding to the single pulse output energy of 73.3 mJ and slope efficiency of 13.3%. In the EO Q-switching mode, a giant pulse laser is obtained with pulse energy of 20.5 mJ, pulse width of 61.4 ns, and peak power of 0.33 MW at the highest working frequency of 150 Hz, corresponding to the energy extraction efficiency of 71.4%. In addition, dual-wavelength laser at 2713 and 2732 nm and beam quality factors M-x(2) /M-y(2) of 6.62/6.66 are measured, respectively. The results indicate that a 2.7-mu m laser with a high repetition rate and high peak power can be realized through LD side-pumped and EO Q-switched Er,Pr:YAP crystal. Abstract:We report the generation of high energy visible pulsed beam from a blue LD-pumped electro-optically (EO) Q-switched Pr3+:LiYF4 (Pr:YLF) laser for the first time. The maximum pulse energy and highest peak power in our work perform excellent in the blue LD-pumped pulse visible lasers. The shortest pulse duration of 137 ns is obtained at the repetition rate of 100 Hz, corresponding to a single pulse energy of 260 μJ and peak power of 1.90 kW. Our research results indicate that the Pr:YLF crystal could be suitable for the generation of high energy Q-switched visible lasers. Meanwhile, we pave up a new way for the practical implementation of blue LD-pumped directly generate high energy Q-switched visible laser.

Abstract:By partially substituting the Y3+ ions with Lu3+ ions, the widely investigated Pr:LiYF4 single crystal has been formated into Pr:LiY0.3Lu0.7F4 mixed crystal. In this work, we report the recent progress on diode-pumped continuous-wave Pr:LiY0.3Lu0.7F4 lasers in visible spectral region. Using a diode double-end pumping geometry, we have achieved red (∼640 nm), orange (∼607 nm), green (∼523 nm) and deep red (∼721 nm) lasers with maximum output powers and slope efficiencies of (3.28 W, 35.9%), (1.79 W, 19.8%), (1.61 W, 18.0%) and (1.56 W, 20.8%), respectively. The orange and deep red lasers are first demonstrated in the Pr:LiY0.3Lu0.7F4 mixed crystal, to the best of our knowledge. Moreover, the results represent the best laser performance for Pr3+ mixed crystal lasers. Researches on Pr3+ mixed crystals and their corresponding lasers are still on their initial stages, which could provide some new opportunities for the generation of high-power continuous-wave visible lasers and more importantly for the generation of femtosecond ultrashort pulsed visible lasers that is indeed very on demand.

Abstract:We report the first demonstration on four new wavelengths of 609 nm, 613 nm, 618 nm in both $\sigma $ - and $\pi $ -polarized direction based on continuous-wave Pr $^{3+}$ :LiYF4(Pr $^{3+}$ :YLF) lasers. The transitions mechanism combined dual upper energy levels of $^{3}\text{P}_{1}$ and $^{1}\text{I}_{6}$ with Stark sub-levels of $^{3}\text{H}_{6}$ and $^{3}\text{F}_{2}$ was designated. The CW lasers achieve output power greater than watt levels at room temperature, with 2.36 W at 609 nm, 1.85 W at 618 nm, in the $\sigma $ -polarized direction and 1.93 W at 613 nm, 1.40 W at 618 nm, in the $\pi $ -polarized direction.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber single-polarization dual-wavelength Yb-doped fiber laser passively mode-locked with a 45°-tilted fiber grating for the first time. Stable dual-wavelength operation exhibits double-rectangular spectral profile centered at 1033 and 1053 nm, respectively. The 3 dB bandwidth of each rectangular optical spectrum is estimated as 10 nm. The separation of two fundamental repetition rates is 6 kHz. By employing the 45° TFG with the polarization-dependent loss of 33 dB, output pulses with 27 dB polarization extinction ratio are implemented in the experiment. The single pulse centered at 1053 nm is researched by using a filter at the output port of the laser, and the experimental results denote that the output ps pulses are highly chirped. The formation mechanism of dual-wavelength operation is investigated.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
Spatial-temporal manipulations of visible nanosecond sub-pulse sequences in an actively Q-switched Pr:YLF laser

Abstract:Pulsed visible lasers either by Q-switching or mode locking have been attracting intense attentions both in solid-state laser and fiber laser. Here, we report on the simultaneous manipulation of reconfigurable sub-pulse sequences and customizable high-order vortex beams in an actively Q-switched visible laser. On the one hand, pulse sequences with up to 4 sub-pulses could be generated and fully controlled by means of an acoustic-optic modulator driven by an arbitrary waveform generator. Both pulse number and pulse intensity can be manipulated through the programmable step-signal, which is also theoretically simulated through the rate equations. On the other hand, assisted by the off-axis pumping technique and the astigmatic mode conversion, the laser cavity could emit high-quality vortex beams carrying Laguerre-Gaussian modes up to 30th order. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most flexible active manipulations not only on the intensity distribution of the transverse modes but also on the temporal distribution of the pulse sequences in a visible laser. The versatile manipulating techniques in this work could be immediately implemented into all other solid-state lasers to obtain sub-pulse vortex beams, which may provide enhanced functionality and flexibility for a large range of laser systems.

Abstract:We report on the first, to the best of our knowledge, direct generation of orthogonally polarized dual-wavelength laser with orbital Poincaré (OP) modes at 639 nm and 721 nm in a blue-diode pumped Pr:YLF laser. Beyond the single-wavelength emission, dual-wavelength laser can be approached by adjusting the tilt angle of the output mirror in the critical cavity. In addition, either monochromatic or bi-chromatic orbital Poincaré modes, including Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes, Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes and Hermite-Laguerre Gaussian (HLG) modes can be directly generated by simple off-axis pump scheme and displacement of the output mirror. Moreover, hybrid eigenmodes with S-shape beam profile resulting from dual singularities at the wavefront are observed, as well as the mode switching along with the increase of the pump power. Meanwhile, these composite modes are replicated by simulations using the coherent superposition of higher order HG modes. This work may shed new light on the dual-wavelength laser at visible regime with various modes for potential applications.

Abstract:To date, spatiotemporal mode‐locking (STML) of fiber lasers in the near‐infrared region have been well demonstrated, yet operation at visible wavelengths is still challenging. Here, a 635 nm STML fiber laser is reported with a 9 ps pulse duration, and the average power is amplified up to 440 mW (corresponding to 4 nJ pulse energy). Spatiotemporal mode‐locking (STML) in fiber lasers are of interest in applications such as optical communications, nonlinear imaging, and precision machining. To date, STML fiber lasers in the near‐infrared region have been well demonstrated, yet operation at visible wavelengths is still challenging. By solving the modified generalized multimode nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the 635 nm STML formation is theoretically predicted and analyzed. The stable 635 nm STML with a 9 ps pulse duration, which is two orders of magnitude narrower than previously reported, is realized experimentally. Moreover, spatiotemporal profiles are illustrated by investigating the locking of transverse and longitudinal modes simultaneously. By further establishing visible ultrafast fiber amplifier, the 635 nm average power is boosted up to 440 mW, corresponding to a maximum pulse energy and peak power of 4 nJ and 280 W, respectively. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations. Abstract:A 2 μm laser has important applications and prospects in various fields such as LIDAR, material processing, environmental monitoring, and space communication, as well as fundamental researches. Being designed for the room-temperature operation, our Tm:YLF laser with L flat concave resonator incorporates a laser-diode end-pump setup, in which a volume Bragg grating and double Fabry–Pérot etalons serve as a line-width limiting element. With an injection power of 49.58 W, a maximum output power of 17.78 W is achieved with a center wavelength of 1908.55 nm and a linewidth limited from 2 to 0.1 nm. A corresponding slope efficiency of 42.89% and an optical–optical conversion efficiency of 35.86% are obtained.

Abstract:High quality Pr3+ single-doped PbF2 and Pr3+/Yb3+ co-doped PbF2 single crystals were grown by temperature gradient technique (TGT). By co-doping Yb3+ ion as Pr3+ ions sensitizer, the visible light emission can be regulated and the largest luminescence branching ratio can be switched from red-orange to blue-green light. Besides, when Pr3+ ions doping concentration is as low as possible, the blue light self-absorption effect can be weakened, which is beneficial to high-efficiency blue laser output. Moreover, the broad band emission around 1.3 μm from 1G4 energy level can be observed in the Pr3+/Yb3+:PbF2 crystal with the low maximum phonon energy for the first time. Absorption, emission spectra and luminescence mechanism are well analyzed by the energy transfer process and J-O theory. The laser upper energy level lifetime of Pr3+ ions has a great increase by Yb3+ ion effect. These advantageous spectroscopic characteristics show that the Pr3+/Yb3+:PbF2 crystal might be potential laser gain materials for blue-green and ∼1.3 μm near-IR laser operation.

Abstract:We present for the first time a Pr:YAlO 3 (Pr:YAP) laser emitting at 547 nm intracavity-pumped by a self-frequency-doubling Yb 3+ :Ca 4 GdO (BO 3 ) 3 (Yb:GdCOB) blue laser at 488 nm. We carried out a model to design the system properly, and the laser performance was experimentally investigated. Intracavity sum-frequency mixing at 547 and 488 nm was then realized in a CsLiB 6 O 10 (CLBO) nonlinear crystal to reach the ultraviolet laser at 258 nm. We obtained a continuous wave output power of 575 mW at 258 nm with a pump source, which is a diode-pumped quasi-three-level Sr 1-x La x -y Nd y Mg x Al 12-x O 19 (Nd:ASL) laser emitting 11.2 W at 902 nm.

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a thermally stable four-mirror discrete-component planar ring cavity for Q-switched laser output. An 880 nm fiber-coupled laser diode is used to pump a-cut Nd:YVO4 directly. A magnetic rotation glass (MR3-2) inserted into a permanent cylinder magnet, in combination with a half-wave plate and the polarized emission properties of Nd: YVO4, is used to obtain unidirectional laser operation. With this setup, for a pump power of 5 W, 2.75 W of continuous 1064 nm single-frequency laser output is obtained. Next, a Cr:YAG with small signal transmittance of 75% is inserted in between the two concave mirrors where the beam waist is located. Consequently, a passive Q-switching single-frequency linear polarization pulse with an average power of 1.02 W, pulse width of 60 ns, frequency of 21 kHz, peak power of 810 W, and single-pulse energy of 48 mu J is obtained. Further, we also propose a new method of using a Fabry-Perot (FP) scanning interferometer to observe high-repetition rate Q-switched pulse output longitudinal-mode signals.
