Abstract:This paper is a brief journey into the amazing realm of crystalline color superconductors. Starting from a qualitative description of superfluids, superconductors and supersolids, we show how inhomogeneous phases may arise when the system is under stress. These basic concepts are then extended to quark matter, in which a richer variety of phases can be realized. Then, the most interesting properties of the crystalline color superconductors are presented. This brief journey ends with a discussion of crystalline color superconductors in compact stars and related astrophysical observables. We aim at providing a pedagogical introduction for nonexpert in the field to a few interesting properties of crystalline color superconductors, without discussing the methods and the technicalities. Thus, the results are presented without a proof. However, we try to give a qualitatively clear description of the main concepts, using standard quantum field theory and analogies with condensed matter systems.

Abstract:The main idea and procedure are presented for a new synthetical method on constraining 3-D structure of emission regions of pulsars. With this method the emission regions can be synthetically constrained by fitting multi-wavelength observations features, e.g. pulse widths, phase offsets between radio pulse profiles and high energy light curves, and radio polarization properties. The main technique is based on numerically calculating the emission directions along any open field line via including aberration and retardation effects under a certain magnetic field configuration, e.g. vacuum dipole field. It can be easily extended by involving some further effects or magnetic field line configuration. The role of observed linear polarization properties in the method is discussed. The future application to known X/gamma-ray and radio pulsars will be helpful to test and improve current theoretical models on pulsar emission.

Abstract:The effect of color breaking on colored quarks' chiral condensates has been investigated at zero temperature and moderate baryon density. It is found that the influence of the diquark condensate on different colored quarks is very small.

Abstract:We present the dispersion relations for quasiparticle excitations about the color-flavor locked ground state of QCD at high baryon density. In the presence of condensates which pair light and strange quarks there need not be an energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum. This raises the possibility of gapless color superconductivity, with a Meissner effect but no minimum excitation energy. Analysis within a toy model suggests that gapless color superconductivity may occur only as a metastable phase.

Abstract:The problem of color superconductivity in dense QCD is reconsidered in the improved rainbow approximation to the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The effect of the unscreened magnetic modes of gluons on the value of the color condensate is studied. In particular, it is shown that, at sufficiently large values of the chemical potential, these modes lead to the enhancement of the superconducting order parameter. The interplay between the instanton induced interaction and the one-gluon induced one in color superconductivity is discussed.

Abstract:Systems of superconducting islands placed on normal metal films offer tunable realizations of two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity; they can thus elucidate open questions regarding the nature of 2D superconductors and competing states. In particular, island systems have been predicted to exhibit zero-temperature metallic states. Although evidence exists for such metallic states in some 2D systems, their character is not well understood: the conventional theory of metals cannot explain them, and their properties are difficult to tune. Here, we characterize the superconducting transitions in mesoscopic island-array systems as a function of island thickness and spacing. We observe two transitions in the progression to superconductivity; both transition temperatures exhibit unexpectedly strong depression for widely spaced islands. These depressions are consistent with the system approaching zero-temperature metallic states. The nature of the transitions and the state between them is explained using a phenomenological model involving the stabilization of superconductivity on each island via a weak coupling to and feedback from its neighbors.

Recent Progress in NMR Studies on Unconventional Superconductors

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a crucial research tool in spectroscopy, specifically for exploring the mechanisms of unconventional superconductors. The discovery of new unconventional superconducting materials has facilitated several new developments in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance in recent years. These advancements have aided and accelerated the study of unconventional superconductivity mechanisms. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the latest research and its categorization into three types of superconducting materials: odd-parity superconductors, copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors and kagome superconductors. Our study of odd-parity superconductors will focus on the superconducting phase diagram on the paramagnetic side of the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in the chromium -based superconducting family A2Cr3As3 and the experimental evidence for spin -triplet superconductivity. Moreover, we will present the results on antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and the mixed state of spin -singlet and spintriplet pairing in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor YPtBi. For cuprate and kagome-structured superconductors, we will present the microscopic experimental evidence for the commensurate lambda = 3b periodicity charge density wave modulation induced by strong magnetic fields in YBa2Cu3Oy. Furthermore, we will also discuss the evolution of charge density wave modulation and electronic correlations with varying pressure in the kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5. We hope this study can provide some insights and stimulate further theoretical, material and experimental research in the realm of unconventional superconductors.
Relativistic BCS-BEC Crossover at Finite Temperature and Its Application to Color Superconductivity

Abstract:The nonrelativistic ${G}_{0}G$ formalism of BCS-BEC crossover at finite temperature is extended to relativistic fermion systems. The uncondensed pairs contribute a pseudogap to the fermion excitations. The theory recovers the BCS mean field approximation at zero temperature and the nonrelativistic results in a proper limit. For massive fermions, when the coupling strength increases, there exist two crossovers from the weak coupling BCS superfluid to the nonrelativistic BEC state and then to the relativistic BEC state. For color superconductivity at moderate baryon density, the matter is in the BCS-BEC crossover region, and the behavior of the pseudogap is quite similar to that found in high temperature superconductors.

Abstract:We explore the effects of an applied strong external magnetic field in a three flavor massless color superconductor. The long-range component of the B field that penetrates the superconductor enhances some quark condensates, leading to a different condensation pattern. The external field also reduces the flavor symmetries in the system, and thus it changes drastically the corresponding low energy physics. Our considerations are relevant for the study of highly magnetized compact stars.

Abstract:Ever since its first discovery in 1911, superconductivity, which is an ordered phase of electronic state, has been regarded as one of the most fascinating topics in modern physics. Recently, remarkable advances in sample fabrication have greatly promoted the research of superconductivity, especially in the field of two-dimensional (2D) materials, where 2D Ising superconductors have sparked immense interests for their unique properties, holding promise in engineering topological superconductivity. In this review, we summarize recent works on both experimental and theoretical studies of 2D Ising superconductivity, with particular attention to the origin of Ising superconductivity as well as their novel properties. We conclude with a discussion of how these unconventional 2D Ising superconductors can play a role in the investigation of topological superconductivity, which is of potential in quantum computing.

Abstract:This review elaborates pedagogically on the fundamental concept, basic theory, expected properties, and materials realizations of topological superconductors. The relation between topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions are explained, and the difference between dispersive Majorana fermions and a localized Majorana zero mode is emphasized. A variety of routes to topological superconductivity are explained with an emphasis on the roles of spin-orbit coupling. Present experimental situations and possible signatures of topological superconductivity are summarized with an emphasis on intrinsic topological superconductors.

Abstract:Color centers are versatile systems that generate quantum light, sense magnetic fields and produce spin-photon entanglement. We review how these properties have pushed the limits of fundamental knowledge in a variety of scientific disciplines, from rejecting local-realistic theories to sensing superconducting phase transitions. In the light of recent progress in material processing and device fabrication, we identify new opportunities for interdisciplinary fundamental discoveries in physics and geochemistry.

Opening the Crystalline Color Superconductivity Window

Abstract:Cold dense quark matter is in a crystalline color superconducting phase wherever pairing occurs between species of quarks with chemical potentials whose difference \delta\mu lies within an appropriate window. If the interaction between quarks is modeled as point-like, this window is rather narrow. We show that when the interaction between quarks is modeled as single-gluon exchange, the window widens by about a factor of ten at accessible densities and by much larger factors at higher density. This striking enhancement reflects the increasingly (1+1)-dimensional nature of the physics at weaker and weaker coupling. Our results indicate that crystalline color superconductivity is a generic feature of the phase diagram of cold dense quark matter, occurring wherever one finds quark matter which is not in the color-flavor locked phase. If it occurs within the cores of compact stars, a crystalline color superconducting region may provide a new locus for glitch phenomena.

Abstract:Superconductivity and magnetism are adversarial states of matter. The presence of spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state is, therefore, an intriguing phenomenon prompting extensive experimental and theoretical research. In this review, we discuss recent experimental discoveries of unconventional superconductors which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry and theoretical efforts in understanding their properties. We discuss the main experimental probes and give an extensive account of theoretical approaches to understand the order parameter symmetries and the corresponding pairing mechanisms, including the importance of multiple bands.

Abstract:Superconductivity is one of the most important research fields in condensed matter physics. The rapid development of material preparation technology in last few years has made the experimental study of low-dimensional physical superconducting properties feasible. This article gives a brief introduction on superconductivity and technology of low-dimensional material fabrication, and mainly focuses on the experimental progress in electrical transport studies on one- and two-dimensional superconductors, especially the results from our group. As for one-dimensional superconductivity, we review the superconductivities in single crystal Bi nanowires, crystalline Pb nano-belts, and amorphous W nanobelts, and the proximity effects in superconducting nanowires, metallic nanowires, and ferromagnetic nanowires. Surface superconductivity is revealed for crystalline Bi nanowire. The step-like voltage platforms in V-I curves are observed in Pb nano-belts and may be attributed to phase slip centers. Besides, vortex glass (VG) phase transition is discovered in amorphous W nano-belts. Inverse proximity effect is detected in crystalline Pb nanowires with normal electrodes, and proximity induced mini-gap is found in crystalline Au nanowire with superconducting electrodes. Furthermore, in crystalline ferromagnetic Co nanowire contacted by superconducting electrodes, unconventional long range proximity effect is observed. As for two-dimensional superconductivity, we review the superconductivities in Pb thin films on Si substrates, 2 atomic layer Ga films on GaN substrates, and one-unit-cell thick FeSe film on STO substrates grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. By both in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ex situ transport and magnetization measurements, the two-atomic-layer Ga film with graphene-like structure on wide band-gap semiconductor GaN is found to be superconducting with T-c up to 5.4 K. By direct transport and magnetic measurements, the strong evidences for high temperature superconductivities in the 1-UC FeSe films on insulating STO substrates with the onset T-c and critical current density much higher than those for bulk FeSe are revealed. Finally, we give a summary and present a perspective on the future of low dimensional superconductors.

Abstract:The transverse Nernst--Ettingshausen effect and thermopower of hot charge carriers in nondegenerate impure semiconductors placed at high electric and nonquantized magnetic fields in the nondiffusion approximation is studied. Arbitrary heating and mutual drag of electrons and long wavelength phonons interacting with electrons are considered. The spectrum of electrons is assumed to be strong nonparabolic in Kane two--band approximation. The case when the electron concentration is high and frequent interelectronic collisions lead to the equilibrium symmetric part of the electron distribution function with effective electron temperature is considered.

Exploring Superconductivity: The Interplay of Electronic Orders in Topological Quantum Materials

Abstract:Topological quantum materials hold great promise for future technological applications. Their unique electronic properties, such as protected surface states and exotic quasiparticles, offer opportunities for designing novel electronic devices, spintronics, and quantum information processing. The origin of the interplay between various electronic orders in topological quantum materials, such as superconductivity and magnetism, remains unclear, particularly whether these electronic orders cooperate, compete, or simply coexist. Since the 2000s, the combination of topology and matter has sparked a tremendous surge of interest among theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Novel theoretical descriptions and predictions, as well as complex experimental setups confirming or refuting these theories, continuously appear in renowned journals. This review aims to provide conceptual tools to understand the fundamental concepts of this ever-growing field. Superconductivity and its historical development will serve as a second pillar alongside topological materials. While the primary focus will be on topological superconductors, other topological materials, such as topological insulators and topological semimetals, will also be explained phenomenologically.
