Abstract:This study investigates the propagation properties and radiation forces on Rayleigh dielectric particles produced by novel sine-modulated Gaussian beams (SMGBs) because of the unique focusing properties of four independent light intensity distribution centers and possessing many deep potential wells in the output plane of the target laser. The described beams can concurrently capture and manipulate multiple Rayleigh dielectric spheres with high refractive indices without disturbing each other at the focus plane. Spheres with a low refractive index can be guided or confined in the focus but cannot be stably trapped in this single beam trap. Simulation results demonstrate that the focused SMGBs can be used to trap particle in different planes by increasing the sine-modulate coefficient g . The conditions for effective and stable capture of high-index particles and the threshold of detectable radius are determined at the end of this study.

Abstract:An analytical expression for the intensity distribution of a focused continuous Hermite-Gaussian beam after passing through a positive lens has been derived. Analytically, this intensity has been used to derive the gradient force acting on a nano-dielectric particle sphere. It is found that, the beam modes (p, l) have a direct influence on the trap stability, the number of trapping regions, the area of trapping zones and the particle size range.

Abstract:In order to explore the capture of two types of particles with different refractive-indexes with focused partially coherent Lommel-Gaussian beam (PCLGB), we numerically derived the expressions of the intensity, and its distribution is also simulated. We found that the focused PCLGB is able to capture two high refractive-index particles at different positions on the focal plane and a low refractive-index particle at the focus, respectively. when the orbital angular momentum (OAM)quantum number, lens focal length, asymmetry parameter decreased, and the spatial correlation length and beam waist increased, the transverse gradient force of the focused PCLGB increased; when the OAM quantum number, lens focal length, asymmetry parameter, spatial correlation length decreased and the beam waist increased, the axial gradient force and scattering force of the focused PCLGB increased. We can choose the optimum optical and lens parameters, a large range and stable trapping can be achieved. The obtained results have certain reference value for the focused PCLGB applied in micromanipulation technology and biotechnology.

Abstract:The radiation force of highly focused cosine-Gaussian beam acting on a particle in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically investigated in this paper. The results show that it is feasible to utilize cosine-Gaussian beam in optical trapping system. Abstract:The analytical expression for the propagation of elegant Hermite-cosh-Gaussian (EHCHG) beams through a paraxial ABCD optical system is derived and used to study the radiation forces produced by highly focused EHCHG beams acting on a Rayleigh dielectric particle. Owing to the characteristics of this kind of beams our analysis shows that it can be expected to simultaneously trap and manipulate dielectric spheres with low-refractive index at the focal point, and particles with high-refractive index nearby the focal point. Finally, the stability conditions for effective trapping and manipulating particles by this kind of focused beams are discussed.

Abstract:The radiation force of highly focused Lorentz-Gauss beams (LG beam) on a dielectric sphere in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically studied. The numerical results show that the Lorentz-Gauss beam can be used to trap particles with the refractive index larger than that of the ambient. The radiation force distribution has been studied under different beam widths of the Lorentz part. The trapping stability under different conditions is also analyzed.

Abstract:A nanofiber-based optical tweezer is demonstrated. Trapping is achieved by combining attractive near-field optical gradient forces with repulsive electrostatic forces. Silica-coated Fe2O3 nanospheres of 300 diameter are trapped as close as 50 nm away from the surface with 810 μW of optical power, with a maximum trap stiffness of 2.7 pN μm−1. Electrostatic trapping forces up to 0.5 pN are achieved, a factor of 50 larger than those achievable for the same optical power in conventional optical tweezers. Efficient collection of the optical field directly into the nanofiber enables ultra-sensitive tracking of nanoparticle motion and extraction of its characteristic Brownian motion spectrum, with a minimum position sensitivity of 3.4 Å/Hz.

Abstract:The radiation force of modified circular Airy beams (MCAB) exerted on both a high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle are analyzed in this paper. Our results show that the two kinds of particles can be simultaneously stably trapped by MCAB at different positions. Compared with the common circular Airy beams (CAB) with the same parameters, trapping forces on the two kinds of particles are greatly increased because of the enhanced abruptly autofocusing property and the appearance of hollow region in MCAB. The trapping forces can be modulated by varying parameters of MCAB, and it is important to choose appropriate parameters to trap particles in practice. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber-based Bessel optical trap for the simultaneous trapping of both high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle. We obtain the Bessel beam by incident 980 nm beam into the designed integrate fiber structure, which is fabricated by coaxial splice a section of step-index multimode fiber to the single mode fiber. A high refractive index glass microsphere, which is stuck on the tip of multimode fiber, is utilized to converge the Bessel beam to produce a bright focal spot and a dark cage along the axial direction. The high-refractive-index particle and the low-refractive-index particle are trapped in the bright focal spot and the dark cage, respectively. Our simulation verifies the feasibility that particles with high refractive index and low refractive index can be trapped and manipulated at the same time. The proposed optical trap which can simultaneously trap the particles with different refractive index makes it easier to manipulate cells or molecules with different properties and explore the multi-molecule interaction, which can facilitate the research related to biology and chemistry.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the trapping effect of the focused generalized Multi-Gaussian Schell model (GMGSM) beam of the first kind which produces dark hollow beam profile at the focal plane. By calculating the radiation forces on the Rayleigh dielectric sphere in the focused GMGSM beam, we show that such beam can trap low-refractive-index particles at the focus, and simultaneously capture high-index particles at different positions of the focal plane. The trapping range and stability depend on the values of the beam index N and the coherence width. Under the same conditions, the low limits of the radius of low-index and high-index particles for stable trapping are indicated to be different.

Abstract:The focusing properties of elegant third-order Hermite-Gaussian beams (TH(3)GBs) and the radiation forces exerted on dielectric spherical particles produced by such beams in the Rayleigh scattering regime have been theoretically studied. Numerical results indicate that the elegant TH(3)GBs can be used to simultaneously trap and manipulate nanosized dielectric spheres with refractive indexes lower than the surrounding medium at the focus and those with refractive indexes larger than the surrounding medium in the focal vicinity. Furthermore, by changing the radius of the beam waist, the transverse trapping range and stiffness at the focal plane can be changed.
Improvement of Optical Trapping Effect by Using the Focused High-Order Laguerre-Gaussian Beams

Abstract:We investigate the optical trapping effect of high-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams acting on a dielectric sphere in Rayleigh regime. For LG beams with the azimuthal mode index l = 0, it is found that under the same input power, the transverse trapping effect can be enhanced several times with increasing the radial mode index p, compared with that of the Gaussian beam; while its axial trapping effect is exactly the same as that of Gaussian beam, although the central trapping region reduces as p increases. For LG beams with l >= 1, we find that the maximal transverse gradient forces increase with the increasing of p and the axial radiation forces reduces slightly, therefore an optimal choose on p and l is necessary for obtaining an optimal optical guiding. Our result is useful for analyzing the trapping efficiency of LG beams applied in micromanipulation technologies. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report a new method to generate multiple optical traps by using phase Fresnel lens (PFL) array. We also demonstrate its applications on manipulating micro particles in experiment. In our experiment, the PFL array is formed by a spatial light modulation. The multiple beams generated by PFL array are directed into the inverted microscope and are highly focused in the focus plane of the objective. The 1.4μm polystyrene spheres are trapped in the experiment. Each of the trapped particles can be controlled by changing the position of the corresponding Fresnel zone plate in the array. Comparing with the hologram methods, which is the most popular method in generating optical trap arrays, the PFL array method has increased the trapping efficiency. Because the power of the useless zero-order light in the hologram method can be used in PFL array method. Besides, each of the trapped particles can be controlled separately in PFL array method, which makes micromanipulation more conveniently.
Influence of Absorption on Optical Trapping Force of Spherical Particles in A Focused Gaussian Beam

Abstract:Based on the extended geometrical optics model, a theoretical study of the optical trapping force on a spherical particle with the absorption considered is presented. In this study, the numerical simulation on transverse trapping force is given. The results suggest that the absorption coefficient and the axial shift of the particle center from the focused Gaussian beam waist greatly influence the trapping properties. Spherical particles with weak absorption could be stably trapped on the optical axis of the Gaussian beam, and the stiffness of trapping decreases with the increasing absorption coefficient of the particle. A highly absorbing particle has more complex trapping characteristics. As the particle location changes from the upstream to the downstream direction of the beam, the stable trapping position may firstly locate on the beam axis, secondly be along a circular route centered on the beam axis, and finally vanish. If the stable trapping position is along a circular route, the stiffness of trapping increases with the increasing absorption coefficient.

Abstract:Optical trapping using focused laser beams (laser tweezers) has been proven to be extremely useful for contactless manipulation of a variety of small objects, including biological cells, organelles within cells, and a wide range of other dielectric micro- and nano-objects. Colloidal metal nanoparticles have drawn increasing attention in the field of optical trapping because of their unique interactions with electromagnetic radiation, caused by surface plasmon resonance effects, enabling a large number of nano-optical applications of high current interest. Here we try to give a comprehensive overview of the field of laser trapping and manipulation of metal nanoparticles based on results reported in the recent literature. We also discuss and describe the fundamentals of optical forces in the context of plasmonic nanoparticles, including effects of polarization, optical angular momentum, and laser heating effects, as well as the various techniques that have been used to trap and manipulate metal nanoparticles. We conclude by suggesting possible directions for future research.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate stable trapping and controlled manipulation of silica microspheres in a structured optical beam consisting of a dark focus surrounded by light in all directions - the so-called Dark Focus Tweezer. Results from power spectrum and potential analysis demonstrate the non-harmonicity of the trapping potential landspace, which is reconstructed from experimental data in agreement to Lorentz-Mie numerical simulations. Applications of the dark tweezer in levitated optomechanics and biophysics are discussed.

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be an efficient method to control particles, including biological cells, single biological macromolecules, colloidal microparticles, and nanoparticles. Multiple types of particles have been successfully trapped, leading to various applications of optical tweezers ranging from biomedical through physics to material sciences. However, precise manipulation of particles with complex composition or of sizes down to nanometer-scales can be difficult with conventional optical tweezers, and an alternative manipulation tool is desirable. Optical nanofibers, that is, fibers with a waist diameter smaller than the propagating wavelength of light, are ideal candidates for optical manipulation due to their large evanescent field that extends beyond the fiber surface. They have the added advantages of being easily connected to a fibered experimental setup, being simple to fabricate, and providing strong electric field confinement and intense magnitude of evanescent fields at the nanofiber's surface. Many different particles have been trapped, rotated, transported, and assembled with such a system. This article reviews particle trapping using optical nanofibers and highlights some challenges and future potentials of this developing topic.
