Abstract:Thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes based on the graphitic nanomaterials have drawn substantial interest for precise separation of dyes and salts. The polyamide layer of TFC membrane plays a key role on both membrane permeability and selectivity. Ultrathin defect-free polyamide layer often means high efficiency water production and it depends on the interface property of support layer. Here, we used the polydopamine coated graphitic carbon nitride (D-gCN) to modify the polyether sulfone (PES) support, endowing its suitable hierarchical interface for fabricating a high performance TFC membrane (D-gCN TFC) with an ultrathin, defect-free, integrated and high-selective polyamide layer through the interfacial polymerization involving piperazine (PIP) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC). Results showed that the D-gCN TFC membrane displayed a high pure water permeance of 36.16 L/m 2 ·h·bar and remarkable selectivity of CR/MgCl 2 (213.53) and CR/NaCl (123.30). Furthermore, we elucidate both separation and formation mechanisms of a defect-free polyamide layer on the D-gCN modified support. Our study for tuning the hierarchical microstructure of support surface opens opportunities for high-selective TFC membranes and shows a great potential prospect in dye/salt separation for resource recycling of dyeing wastewater.
