Abstract:Dental stem cells (DSCs) offer significant potential for use in regenerative procedures and therefore identifying cellular regulators that control SC fate is critical to devising novel therapeutic strategies. Stem cell lineage-commitment and differentiation are regulated by an intricate network of host and environmental factors of which epigenetic influence is considered crucial. Epigenetic modification of DNA and histone proteins, as well as the epigenetic influence of non-coding RNA has been demonstrated to regulate developmental potential and the renewal and pluripotency of SC populations. The activities of the enzymes, DNA methyltransferases (DNMT) and histone deacetylases (HDAC), are increasingly recognized as key targets for pharmacological intervention for stem cell differentiation and de-differentiation processes.
