Reactive and Functional Polymers
Abstract:Maleimide (BMI) polymers are extensively used as thermal resistance materials in aerospace applications because of their excellent thermal properties. Particularly, the maleimide-amine addition reaction is an important method for the preparation of BMI polymers. However, BMI polymers cannot be easily recycled, which leads to a considerable waste of resources. Herein, we prepared a series of BMI polymers by the maleimide-amine addition reaction of 1,6-bismaleimidohexane and amine crosslinkers (Priamine 1074 and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN)). The crosslinking density ( v e ), glass transition temperature ( T g ), and Young's modulus of the polymers increased as the Priamine 1074/TREN ratio decreased; hence, adjustable mechanical properties were successfully realized. Among the polymers synthesized in this study, the P3 film showed optimal mechanical properties with a Young's modulus of 46.9 ± 2 MPa, an elongation at break of 170 ± 24%, and tensile strength of 12.57 ± 1.20 MPa. Further, we studied the dynamic properties of the P3 film. The results revealed that the chemical structure, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of the P3 polymer film showed no detectable deterioration after three cycles of hot-press remolding at 150 °C and 5 MPa. Stress relaxation of P3 polymer suggested a fast relaxation behavior (148 s of relaxation at 190 °C) and a low activation energy (52 kJ/mol). The dissolution of the P3 polymer at 160 °C directly indicates the bond exchange reaction between the maleimide adduct and benzylamine. Finally, the shape memory performance experiments confirmed the outstanding shape memory cycling and fast recoverability of the P3 polymer at 80 °C (30–35 s). This study confirms that the maleimide-amine adducts are dynamic and provides a solution for the recycling of BMI polymers. In addition, the P3 polymer can be investigated further and developed as functional materials with shape memory and self-healing properties.
