Abstract:Radiation pressure can be generated by interactions of electromagnetic (EM) waves with matter. Conventional in-space photonic propulsion systems like solar sails or solar photon thrusters operate by reflection of EM waves. This paper introduces a new type of solar sail which generates thrust by means of refraction of light through a thin film composed of micro-prisms. The main feature of the proposed refractive sail is its relatively large tangential radiation pressure, generated at near-normal radiation incidence. A method for computation of radiation pressure, by having the direction and power of input and output light beams, was introduced. Then a simple analytical approach for optimal design of the refractive film was presented, and ray tracing was utilized for computation of the radiation pressure to a good approximation. A refractive sail can be utilized in applications which a tangential force, especially at near-normal radiation incidence, is required. By utilizing this sail for orbit raising from low-Earth orbit (LEO), the minimum possible altitude for solar sailing can be reduced to about 500 km under the mean solar activity. Attitude control of solar sails along the sail's normal axis is another possible application of refractive films. Refractive films can also be utilized as solar collector (Fresnel lens) in space, which besides the convenience of their shape keeping, can be designed to be passively stable at the Sun-pointing attitude.

Abstract:The transverse radiation pressure force and acceleration is compared for two parametrically optimized designs: prismatic and two-pillar metasurface gratings. The numerical results were cross-verified with both Maxwell stress tensor and modal analysis. Solar blackbody irradiance was assumed for wavelengths ranging from 0.33 [um] to the grating cutoff at 1.5 [um], encompassing 83% of the solar constant. This multi-objective optimizer study found that neither design comprised Si3N4 performed as well as those corresponding to a low refractive index, low mass density material. The predicted transverse acceleration of the optimized low-index metasurface grating is compared to that of a state-of-the-art reflective solar sail.

Abstract:The p-polarization component of radiation pressure force from an unpolarized blackbody light source is predicted by the use of a Maxwell equation solver for a right triangular prism grating of period 2 μm and refractive index 3.5. The transmitted and reflected angular scattering distributions are found to qualitatively agree with diffraction theory: At relatively short wavelengths the transmitted light is concentrated near the refraction angle, and reflected light is concentrated near the reflection angle. Owing to diffraction and multiple internal reflections, however, the spectral irradiance of transmitted and reflected light was found to significantly vary with wavelength. We found that the high value of the refractive index produced a large fraction of reflected light, thereby reducing the net transverse component of radiation pressure force. These results suggest that low index transmission gratings, anti-reflection coatings, optimized metasurface films, or reflection gratings should be explored for future solar sailing missions.

Abstract:A diffractive solar sail is an elegant concept for a propellantless spacecraft propulsion system that uses a large, thin, lightweight surface covered with a metamaterial film to convert solar radiation pressure into a net propulsive acceleration. The latter can be used to perform a typical orbit transfer both in a heliocentric and in a planetocentric mission scenario. In this sense, the diffractive sail, proposed by Swartzlander a few years ago, can be considered a sort of evolution of the more conventional reflective solar sail, which generally uses a metallized film to reflect the incident photons, studied in the scientific literature starting from the pioneering works of Tsander and Tsiolkovsky in the first decades of the last century. In the context of a diffractive sail, the use of a metamaterial film with a Littrow transmission grating allows for the propulsive acceleration magnitude to be reduced to zero (and then, the spacecraft to be inserted in a coasting arc during the transfer) without resorting to a sail attitude that is almost edgewise to the Sun, as in the case of a classical reflective solar sail. The aim of this work is to study the optimal (i.e., the rapid) transfer performance of a spacecraft propelled by a diffractive sail with a Littrow transmission grating (DSLT) in a three-dimensional heliocentric mission scenario, in which the space vehicle transfers between two assigned Keplerian orbits. Accordingly, this paper extends and generalizes the results recently obtained by the author in the context of a simplified, two-dimensional, heliocentric mission scenario. In particular, this work illustrates an analytical model of the thrust vector that can be used to study the performance of a DSLT-based spacecraft in a three-dimensional optimization context. The simplified thrust model is employed to simulate the rapid transfer in a set of heliocentric mission scenarios as a typical interplanetary transfer toward a terrestrial planet and a rendezvous with a periodic comet.

Anomalous Reflection Under Ambient Sunlight: Accessing In-Plane Radiation Pressure for Solar Sailing

Abstract:Harnessing solar radiation pressure is key to transforming space exploration with multiple low cost sunlight propelled spacecraft to outer reaches of space. By controlling the direction of sunlight momentum transfer new missions and better maneuvering in space can be accessed. Here, we discuss design principles for taming in-plane radiation pressure under ambient sunlight. We propose and study theoretically ultra-wideband polarization insensitive metasurfaces for anomalous light reflection. Our design based on segmented tapered patch nanoantenna arrays allows reflection of >60% into one diffraction orders over a 400 nm band across larger part of the solar spectrum. Owing to a wideband nature and polarization insensitivity, our structures convert incident radiation into in-plane radiation pressure force with almost 30% efficiency. We discuss applications of our design to controlling solar sail spin. Beyond solar sailing, we envision that such anomalous metasurfaces for ambient sunlight will find use in solar concentration, spectrum splitting, and solar fuels.

Abstract:A diffractive sail represents an advancement in solar sailing technology, capable of generating tangential radiation pressure force when oriented towards the sun. This unique property allows for varied radiation pressure distributions, making it a potential candidate for complex space missions. This paper delves into the transfer performance of the sun-facing diffractive solar sail in a solar polar imager mission.We establish both the radiation pressure force model and the time-optimal control problem specific to the sun-facing diffractive solar sail in interplanetary transfers. Applying an indirect method and a combined approach of parameter optimization with the direct method, we explore how different diffractive angles and acceleration capacities affect transfer times. This research offers insights to the design and fabrication of thin novel optical metamaterial films that efficiently diffract light at appropriate angles for potential solar sails in the solar polar imager mission. Compared with reflective sails, the diffractive sail demonstrates remarkable transfer efficiency and simplicity in attitude control, making it a more suitable choice in the solar polar imager mission.

Abstract:A gravity tractor spacecraft propelled by a diffractive sail tracking a displaced orbit offers a potential option for deflecting near-Earth asteroids. This study delves into the preliminary dynamics, evaluates the deflection capabilities, and investigates the stability and control of the diffractive sail on the displaced orbit near the asteroid. Unlike reflective sails, diffractive solar sails generate tangential radiation pressure force, offering multiple advantages. These include the elimination of tilt attitude requirements, no offset angle restrictions from the target asteroid's flight direction, and superior deflection performance with an equivalent area-to-mass ratio when the diffraction angle surpasses 50deg . To maintain position, a controllable diffractive sail model using spatial light modulators, coupled with a feedback control law, is proposed. This control design stabilizes the periodic displaced orbit without necessitating tilt attitude adjustments towards the sun, as validated by our numerical simulations.

Abstract:We consider a special relativistic effect, known as the Poynting-Robertson effect, on various types of trajectories of solar sails. Since this effect occurs at order $v^{\phi}/c$, where $v^{\phi}$ is the tangential speed relative to the sun, it can dominate over other special relativistic effects, which occur at order $v^2/c^2$. While solar radiation can be used to propel the solar sail, the absorbed portion of it also gives rise to a drag force in the tangential direction. For escape trajectories, this diminishes the cruising velocity, which can have a cumulative effect on the heliocentric distance. For a solar sail directly facing the sun in a bound orbit, the Poynting-Robertson effect decreases its orbital speed, thereby causing it to slowly spiral towards the sun. We also consider this effect for non-Keplerian orbits in which the solar sail is tilted in the azimuthal direction. While in principle the drag force could be counter-balanced by an extremely small tilt of the solar sail in the polar direction, periodic adjustments are more feasible.

Abstract:This paper investigates the heliocentric time-optimal rendezvous performance of Sun-facing diffractive solar sails with various deflection angles and acceleration capabilities. Diffractive solar sails, which generate tangential radiation pressure force, are proposed and schematically designed to achieve diverse radiation pressure distributions. The radiation pressure force model and the time-optimal control problem for these innovative Sun-facing diffractive solar sails are established. Utilizing an indirect method and the optimal control law, we explore typical heliocentric rendezvous scenarios to assess the variational trends of transfer time in relation to different deflection angles and acceleration capabilities. The results for Sun-facing diffractive sails in specific rendezvous missions are compared to reflective sails with the same area-to-mass ratio, focusing on transfer trajectory and attitude control. Our findings reveal that diffractive sails exhibit significant advantages over reflective sails, particularly in the context of normal acceleration, paving the way for more efficient space exploration.

Abstract:Solar sails with the capability of generating a tangential radiation pressure at the sun-pointing attitude, such as refractive sails can provide more efficient methods for attitude and orbital control of sailcraft. This paper presents the concept of gradient-index sail as an advanced class of refractive sail, which operates by guiding the solar radiation through a structure made of graded refractive index material. The design of the sail refractive index distribution is achieved by transformation optics, which is then realized by the effective refractive index of non-resonant bulk metamaterials made of silica. The methods for fabrication of the proposed three-dimensional gradient-index sail were discussed. The performance of the sail was evaluated by using ray tracing for a broad spectrum of solar radiation under the normal incidence angle, which showed an efficiency of 90.5% for generation of a tangential radiation pressure. The orbital control of the tangential-radiation-pressure-generating (TRPG) sails was studied and it was shown that the full orbital control including the modification of orbital axes, eccentricity, and inclination can be applied by changing the attitude of the sail merely around the sun-sail axis, while the sail keeps the sun-pointing attitude at every point of the orbit.

Abstract:The use of advanced and highly engineered membrane films in solar sail design enables the thrust vector to achieve some specific characteristics that are capable of affecting the performance of a sail-based spacecraft trajectory in a transfer mission scenario. In this field, the recently proposed diffractive sail uses metamaterial films to coat the very thin sail membrane as a potential and effective (in some mission scenarios) alternative to the more common metallic reflective coating. The purpose of this work is to study the optimal guidance law, as a function of sail pitch angle, of a diffractive sailcraft with a Littrow transmission grating film in a typical two-dimensional heliocentric transfer. In particular, the optimal steering law is obtained through a classical indirect approach, depending on the characteristics of Lawden's primer vector, either in exact (by numerical simulation) or approximate (by analytical means) form. The performance of a diffractive sailcraft with a Littrow transmission grating film is then analyzed in a number of potential mission scenarios such as, for example, a phasing in a circular orbit, an interplanetary transfer between coplanar Keplerian trajectories, a circular orbit flip maneuver, and an escape from the Solar System. Simulation results indicate that this specific diffractive sailcraft is potentially capable of executing a typical solar sail-based mission scenario with a simple steering law.

Abstract:Solar sailing is a unique form of propulsion in which a spacecraft gains momentum from incident photons. Solar sails are not limited by reaction mass and provide continual acceleration, reduced only by the lifetime of the lightweight film in the space environment and the distance to the Sun. Once thought to be difficult or impossible, solar sailing has come out of science fiction and into the realm of possibility. Any spacecraft using this propulsion method would need to deploy a thin sail that could be as large as many kilometres in extent. The availability of strong, ultra lightweight, and radiation-resistant materials will determine the future of solar sailing. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is concentrating research into the utilization of ultra lightweight materials for spacecraft propulsion. The Space Environmental Effects Team at MSFC is actively characterizing candidate solar sail material to evaluate the thermo-optical and mechanical properties after exposure to space environmental effects. This paper will describe the irradiation of candidate solar sail materials to energetic electrons, in vacuum, in an effort to determine the in-space operational survivability of several candidate sail materials. Results from this research indicate that the candidate sail materials can survive significant doses of electron radiation while under high uniaxial stress.

Orbital perturbation coupling of primary oblateness and solar radiation pressure

Abstract:Solar radiation pressure can have a substantial long-term effect on the orbits of high area-to-mass ratio spacecraft, such as solar sails. We present a study of the coupling between radiation pressure and the gravitational perturbation due to polar flattening. Removing the short-period terms via perturbation theory yields a time-dependent two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian, depending on one physical and one dynamical parameter. While the reduced model is non-integrable in general, assuming coplanar orbits (i.e., both Spacecraft and Sun on the equator) results in an integrable invariant manifold. We discuss the qualitative features of the coplanar dynamics, and find three regions of the parameters space characterized by different regimes of the reduced flow. For each regime, we identify the fixed points and their character. The fixed points represent frozen orbits, configurations for which the long-term perturbations cancel out to the order of the theory. They are advantageous from the point of view of station keeping, allowing the orbit to be maintained with minimal propellant consumption. We complement existing studies of the coplanar dynamics with a more rigorous treatment, deriving the generating function of the canonical transformation that underpins the use of averaged equations. Furthermore, we obtain an analytical expression for the bifurcation lines that separate the regions with different qualitative flow.

A Single-Averaged Model for the Solar Radiation Pressure Applied to Space Debris Mitigation Using a Solar Sail

Abstract:Several non-functional objects are orbiting around the Earth and they are called space debris. In this work, we investigate the process of space debris mitigation from the GEO region using a solar sail. The acceleration induced by the solar radiation pressure (SRP) is the most relevant perturbation for objects in orbit around the Earth with a high area-to-mass ratio (A/m). We consider the single-averaged SRP model with the Sun in an elliptical and inclined orbit. In addition to the SRP effect, the orbital evolution of space debris is analyzed considering the perturbations due to the Earth's flattening and third-body perturbations in the dynamical system. The idea is to use the solar sail as a propulsion system using the Sun itself as a clean and abundant energy source so that it can remove space debris from the geostationary orbit and also contribute to the sustainability of space exploration. Using averaged dynamical maps as a tool, the numerical simulations show that the solar sail contributes strongly to exciting the eccentricity of the space debris, causing its reentry into Earth's atmosphere. To perform the numerical simulations, we consider data from real space debris. We also show that the solar sail can be used to remove space debris for a graveyard orbit. In this way, the solar sail can work as a clean and sustainable space-debris-removal mechanism. Finally, we show that the convenient choice of the argument of perigee and the longitude of the ascending node might contribute to amplify the growth of eccentricity. It is also shown that solar radiation pressure destroys the symmetry of the orbits that can be observed in keplerian orbits, so all the orbits will be asymmetric when considering the presence of this force.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the possibility of maintaining a circular displaced non-Keplerian orbit around the Sun by means of a Sun-facing diffractive sail. With the goal of monitoring the Earth's high-latitude regions, the spacecraft is required to track its displaced orbit at an angular velocity equal to the mean motion of the planet. In doing so, the spacecraft keeps a constant average phase shift with respect to Earth's angular position along its orbit, allowing the objectives of the scientific mission to be achieved. The diffractive sail, recently proposed by Swartzlander and chosen in this paper as the spacecraft's primary propulsion system, is a special photonic solar sail in which the membrane film is covered by an advanced diffractive metamaterial. In particular, a Sun-facing diffractive sail with a grating at normal incidence generates radial and transverse thrust components of equal magnitude; that is, the thrust vector is tilted 45 degrees from the Sun-spacecraft line. This peculiarity enables the diffractive sail to maintain a family of circular displaced non-Keplerian orbits, each of which is characterized by unique values of radius and a lightness number for an assigned value of spacecraft displacement relative to the Ecliptic. A comparison with the ideal reflecting sail shows that the diffractive sail performs better because for the same overall spacecraft mass, the latter needs about 30% less surface area exposed to the Sun. Finally, this paper discusses the classical stability problem, assuming an error in orbit insertion of the diffractive sail-based spacecraft. In this context, extensive numerical simulations show that such displaced orbits are marginally stable.

Direct Radiation Pressure Measurements for Lightsail Membranes

Abstract:Ultrathin lightsails propelled by laser radiation pressure to relativistic speeds are currently the most promising route for flyby-based exoplanet exploration. However, there has been a notable lack of experimental characterization of key parameters essential for lightsail propulsion. Therefore, a model platform for optomechanical characterization of lightsail prototypes made from realistic materials is needed. We propose an approach for simultaneous measurement of optical forces and driving powers, which capitalizes on the multiphysics dynamics induced by the driving laser beam. By modelling the lightsail with a 50-nm thick silicon nitride membrane suspended by compliant micromechanical springs, we quantify force from off-resonantly driven displacement and power from heating-induced mechanical mode softening. This approach allows us to calibrate the measured forces to the driving powers by operating the device as a mechanical bolometer. We report radiation pressure forces of 80 fN using a collimated pump beam of 100 W/cm2 and noise-robust common-path interferometry. As lightsails will inevitably experience non-normal forces, we quantify the effects of incidence angle and spot size on the optical force and explain the nonintuitive trend by edge scattering. Our results provide a framework for comprehensive lightsail characterization and laboratory optomechanical manipulation of macroscopic objects by radiation pressure forces.

Abstract:The optimization of an interstellar probe trajectory using solar sailing is investigated. With a single solar photonic assistance, solar sails can enable the sailcraft to gain high energy to escape the solar system with a cruise speed of greater than 10 AU/year. Based on a reasonable assumption of a jettison point at 5 AU, a new objective function with a variable scale parameter is adopted to solve the time optimal control problem using an indirect method. A technique of scaling of the adjoint variables is presented to make the optimization much easier than before. A comparison between the current results and previous studies has been conducted to show the advantages of the new objective function. In terms of the mission time, the influence of the departure point of the sailcraft from the Earth orbit is discussed without consideration of the Geo-centric escape phase. Another interesting discovery is that the angular momentum reversal trajectory is achieved as a local-optimal solution in a demonstration mission of 250 AU. Under the same initial condition, the difference between the direct and reversal flybys is discussed in detail through numerical simulations along with their advantages.
