Abstract:Abstract Vegetation change can alter surface energy balance and subsequently affect the local climate. This biophysical impact has been well studied for forestation cases, but the sign and magnitude for persistent earth greening remain controversial. Based on long-term remote sensing observations, we quantify the unidirectional impact of vegetation greening on radiometric surface temperature over 2001–2018. Here, we show a global negative temperature response with large spatial and seasonal variability. Snow cover, vegetation greenness, and shortwave radiation are the major driving factors of the temperature sensitivity by regulating the relative dominance of radiative and non-radiative processes. Combined with the observed greening trend, we find a global cooling of −0.018 K/decade, which slows down 4.6 ± 3.2% of the global warming. Regionally, this cooling effect can offset 39.4 ± 13.9% and 19.0 ± 8.2% of the corresponding warming in India and China. These results highlight the necessity of considering this vegetation-related biophysical climate effect when informing local climate adaptation strategies.

Abstract:Greening—increasing leaf area index—affects regional climate in a number of contradictory ways. The net global effect is now revealed to be cooling that has offset the equivalent of 12% of global land-surface warming over the past 30 years. The surface air temperature response to vegetation changes has been studied for the extreme case of land-cover change1,2,3,4,5; yet, it has never been quantified for the slow but persistent increase in leaf area index (LAI) observed over the past 30 years (Earth greening)6,7. Here we isolate the fingerprint of increasing LAI on surface air temperature using a coupled land–atmosphere global climate model prescribed with satellite LAI observations. We find that the global greening has slowed down the rise in global land-surface air temperature by 0.09 ± 0.02 °C since 1982. This net cooling effect is the sum of cooling from increased evapotranspiration (70%), changed atmospheric circulation (44%), decreased shortwave transmissivity (21%), and warming from increased longwave air emissivity (−29%) and decreased albedo (−6%). The global cooling originated from the regions where LAI has increased, including boreal Eurasia, Europe, India, northwest Amazonia, and the Sahel. Increasing LAI did not, however, significantly change surface air temperature in eastern North America and East Asia, where the effects of large-scale atmospheric circulation changes mask local vegetation feedbacks. Overall, the sum of biophysical feedbacks related to the greening of the Earth mitigated 12% of global land-surface warming for the past 30 years.
Biophysical Impacts of Northern Vegetation Changes on Seasonal Warming Patterns

Abstract:The seasonal greening of Northern Hemisphere (NH) ecosystems, due to extended growing periods and enhanced photosynthetic activity, could modify near-surface warming by perturbing land-atmosphere energy exchanges, yet this biophysical control on warming seasonality is underexplored. By performing experiments with a coupled land-atmosphere model, here we show that summer greening effectively dampens NH warming by −0.15 ± 0.03 °C for 1982–2014 due to enhanced evapotranspiration. However, greening generates weak temperature changes in spring (+0.02 ± 0.06 °C) and autumn (−0.05 ± 0.05 °C), because the evaporative cooling is counterbalanced by radiative warming from albedo and water vapor feedbacks. The dwindling evaporative cooling towards cool seasons is also supported by state-of-the-art Earth system models. Moreover, greening-triggered energy imbalance is propagated forward by atmospheric circulation to subsequent seasons and causes sizable time-lagged climate effects. Overall, greening makes winter warmer and summer cooler, attenuating the seasonal amplitude of NH temperature. These findings demonstrate complex tradeoffs and linkages of vegetation-climate feedbacks among seasons.

Abstract:Global terrestrial vegetation dynamics have been rapidly altered by climate change. A widespread vegetation greenness over a large part of the planet from the 1980s to early this century has been reported, whereas weakening of CO2 fertilization effects and increasing climate extremes and the adverse impact of increasing rate of warming and severity of drought on vegetation growth were also reported. Earth system models project that the land carbon sink will decrease in size in response to an increase in warming during this century. How global vegetation is changing during this century in response to global warming and water availability across spatial and temporal scales remains uncertain. Our understanding of the widespread vegetation greening or browning processes and identifying the biogeochemical mechanisms remain incomplete. Here we use multiple long‐term satellite leaf area index (LAI) records to investigate vegetation growth trends from1982 to 2018. We find that the widespread increase of growing‐season integrated LAI (greening) since 1980's was reversed (p‐value 45oN). Overall, the reversal of greening trend since 2000 weakened the negative feedback of carbon sequestration on the climatic system and should be considered in the strategies for climate warming mitigation and adaptation. Our findings of the diversity of processes that drive browning across bioclimatic‐zones and ecosystems and of how those driving processes are changing would enhance our ability to project global future vegetation change and its climatic and abiotic consequences.

Abstract:The microclimate dynamics under forest crown fundamentally drive plant community responses to global warming. The understory air and soil temperatures are two of the most important components of forest understory microclimate. However, there is rare method to reasonably evaluate the joint effects of forest cover on the understory air and soil temperatures. In this study, we combined a novel three-layer energy balance model and intrinsic biophysical mechanism model to evaluate the biophysical effects of forest on air (Delta T-a) and soil temperatures (Delta T-s) under forest crown at the global scale. Observations from in situ paired expariments and eddy covariance sites from FLUXNET 2015 were used for validations over the globe. The warming effect caused by low albedo and cooling effect caused by large aerodynamic roughness of forest lands mainly explain the global patterns of Delta T-s and Delta T-a, which indicate mostly a net cooling in low latitudes, but show opposite directions in large parts of temperate and high latitudes. The ratios of aerodynamic resistance of sensible heat fluxes between upper and lower layers show a positive relationship with Delta T-s and Delta T-a. The Bowen ratio is negatively related to Delta T-s, but is positively related to Delta T-a, respectively. Additionally, we examined a new indicator, which is composed of both Delta T-s and Delta T-a and regulated by the aerodynamic resistance parameters, to evaluate the joint biophysical effects of forest on understory air and soil temperatures. This study fills the gap in modeling the biophysical effects of forest on air and soil temperatures under forest crown over the global scale and improves our understanding of the mechanisms governing the biophysical effects of global forest cover on understory microclimate.

Abstract:We qualitatively and quantitatively assessed the factors related to vegetation growth using Earth system models and corroborated the results with historical climate observations. The Earth system models showed a systematic greening by the late 21st century, including increases of up to 100% in Gross Primary Production (GPP) and 60% in Leaf Area Index (LAI). A subset of models revealed that the radiative effects of CO2 largely control changes in climate, but that the CO2 fertilization effect dominates the greening. The ensemble of Earth system model experiments revealed that the feedback of surface temperature contributed to 17% of GPP increase in temperature-limited regions, and radiation increase accounted for a 7% increase of GPP in radiation-limited areas. These effects are corroborated by historical observations. For example, observations confirm that cloud cover has decreased over most land areas in the last three decades, consistent with a CO2-induced reduction in transpiration. Our results suggest that vegetation may thrive in the starkly different climate expected over the coming decades, but only if plants harvest the sort of hypothesized physiological benefits of higher CO2 depicted by current Earth system models.

Abstract:Leaf area index (LAI) is increasing throughout the globe, implying Earth greening. Global modeling studies support this contention, yet satellite observations and model simulations have never been directly compared. Here, for the first time, a coupled land–climate model was used to quantify the potential impact of the satellite-observed Earth greening over the past 30 years on the terrestrial water cycle. The global LAI enhancement of 8% between the early 1980s and the early 2010s is modeled to have caused increases of 12.0 ± 2.4 mm yr−1 in evapotranspiration and 12.1 ± 2.7 mm yr−1 in precipitation—about 55% ± 25% and 28% ± 6% of the observed increases in land evapotranspiration and precipitation, respectively. In wet regions, the greening did not significantly decrease runoff and soil moisture because it intensified moisture recycling through a coincident increase of evapotranspiration and precipitation. But in dry regions, including the Sahel, west Asia, northern India, the western United States, and the Mediterranean coast, the greening was modeled to significantly decrease soil moisture through its coupling with the atmospheric water cycle. This modeled soil moisture response, however, might have biases resulting from the precipitation biases in the model. For example, the model dry bias might have underestimated the soil moisture response in the observed dry area (e.g., the Sahel and northern India) given that the modeled soil moisture is near the wilting point. Thus, an accurate representation of precipitation and its feedbacks in Earth system models is essential for simulations and predictions of how soil moisture responds to LAI changes, and therefore how the terrestrial water cycle responds to climate change.

Abstract:Forestry - including afforestation (the planting of trees on land where they have not recently existed), reforesta tion, avoided deforestation, and forest management - can lead to increased sequestration of atmospheric carbor dioxide and has therefore been proposed as a strategy to mitigate climate change. However, forestry also influ ences land-surface properties, including albedo (the fraction of incident sunlight reflected back to space), surface roughness, and evapotranspiration, all of which affect the amount and forms of energy transfer to the atmos phere. In some circumstances, these biophysical feedbacks can result in local climate warming, thereby counter acting the effects of carbon sequestration on global mean temperature and reducing or eliminating the net value of climate-change mitigation projects. Here, we review published and emerging research that suggests ways ir which forestry projects can counteract the consequences associated with biophysical interactions, and highligh knowledge gaps in managing forests for climate protection. We also outline several ways in which biophysica effects can be incorporated into frameworks that use the maintenance of forests as a climate protection strategy

Abstract:Vegetation greenness has been increasing globally since at least 1981, when satellite technology enabled large-scale vegetation monitoring. The greening phenomenon, together with warming, sea-level rise and sea-ice decline, represents highly credible evidence of anthropogenic climate change. In this Review, we examine the detection of the greening signal, its causes and its consequences. Greening is pronounced over intensively farmed or afforested areas, such as in China and India, reflecting human activities. However, strong greening also occurs in biomes with low human footprint, such as the Arctic, where global change drivers play a dominant role. Vegetation models suggest that CO<sub>2</sub> fertilization is the main driver of greening on the global scale, with other factors being notable at the regional scale. Modelling indicates that greening could mitigate global warming by increasing the carbon sink on land and altering biogeophysical processes, mainly evaporative cooling. Coupling high temporal and fine spatial resolution remote-sensing observations with ground measurements, increasing sampling in the tropics and Arctic, and modelling Earth systems in more detail will further our insights into the greening of Earth.

Abstract:SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY Increasing hot temperature extremes (i.e., hot days and warm nights) pose serious challenges like reduced carbon sink, increased wildfires, and more heat -related illnesses. Finding effective solutions to fight against hot temperature extremes is therefore crucial. Earth greening, the increase in vegetation growth activity, cools down the air temperature by absorbing CO2 and increasing evaporative cooling. Despite this, evidence of its effect on hot temperature extremes under rising CO2 levels is lacking, and this hinders adaptation and mitigation efforts. Through a combination of computational model simulations and observations, we show that Earth greening has helped mitigate hot temperature extremes over the past 30 years. However, the offset would have been greater without continually rising CO2 levels. These findings will help guide decision -makers in the deployment of nature -based solutions to combat heatrelated risks, safeguarding public health and preserving vulnerable ecosystems.
Land-atmosphere feedbacks reduce positive albedo forcing of afforestation

Abstract:Thanks to their carbon uptake potential, which produces a negative radiative forcing, forests are considered a major natural mitigation strategy for global warming. Because of their relatively low albedo, however, previous assessments have shown that the effectiveness of afforestation rapidly decreases with latitude. Here, we revisit the problem by taking land-atmosphere feedbacks into account and especially the impact of vegetation on the timing of cloud formation and the probability of convective precipitation. Using a soil-plant-atmosphere continuum model coupled to a mixed layer model of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), we explore variations in the local surface energy balance and diurnal evolution as a function of biomes and latitude. We show that the increased evapotranspiration from forests causes an anticipation in the crossing between the ABL and the lifting condensation level a phenomenon that can lead to earlier cloud formation. This provides an extra cooling effect, which counterbalances the positive forcing of land-surface albedo. As a result, the negative effects of albedo changes appear less limiting, making afforestation a more viable strategy in a wider range of latitudes.

Abstract:Satellite records combined with global ecosystem models show a persistent and widespread greening over 25–50% of the global vegetated area; less than 4% of the globe is browning. CO2 fertilization explains 70% of the observed greening trend. Global environmental change is rapidly altering the dynamics of terrestrial vegetation, with consequences for the functioning of the Earth system and provision of ecosystem services1,2. Yet how global vegetation is responding to the changing environment is not well established. Here we use three long-term satellite leaf area index (LAI) records and ten global ecosystem models to investigate four key drivers of LAI trends during 1982–2009. We show a persistent and widespread increase of growing season integrated LAI (greening) over 25% to 50% of the global vegetated area, whereas less than 4% of the globe shows decreasing LAI (browning). Factorial simulations with multiple global ecosystem models suggest that CO2 fertilization effects explain 70% of the observed greening trend, followed by nitrogen deposition (9%), climate change (8%) and land cover change (LCC) (4%). CO2 fertilization effects explain most of the greening trends in the tropics, whereas climate change resulted in greening of the high latitudes and the Tibetan Plateau. LCC contributed most to the regional greening observed in southeast China and the eastern United States. The regional effects of unexplained factors suggest that the next generation of ecosystem models will need to explore the impacts of forest demography, differences in regional management intensities for cropland and pastures, and other emerging productivity constraints such as phosphorus availability.

Abstract:Terrestrial ecosystems have undergone significant changes as a result of climate change, profoundly affecting global carbon and water cycling processes. Notably, the synergistic changes in vegetation carbon use efficiency (CUE) and water use efficiency (WUE) and their response to patterns of climate change over the last 40 years are unknown. Therefore, in this study, global vegetation WUE and CUE were inverted using Gross primary productivity (GPP), Net primary productivity (NPP) and total evaporation (ET) data from 1981 to 2019 to reveal their temporal and spatial patterns of change through trend analysis and stability analysis. A stepwise regression algorithm was used to reveal the potential driving law of environmental factors on vegetation WUE and CUE. The results shows that (1) From 1981 to 2019, the global vegetation WUE and CUE showed in a relatively stable state, and the trends of WUE and CUE were -0.00004/year and 0.006 g C m-2 mm-1/year, respectively; (2) the greening of vegetation was the most important cause of the changes in WUE and CUE, and the driving force of rain and heat conditions on the CUE of vegetation was smaller than that of solar radiation and soil water, the regions where CO2 is the dominant factor affecting CUE and WUE are mainly in the north temperate zone; (3) the region of synergistic growth of WUE and CUE accounts for about 31.38 % of the global terrestrial area, and this pattern of change suggests that the global vegetation carbon sink potential is huge, and the popularization of vegetation planting patterns under the synergistic growth of CUE and WUE should be strengthened. The research has shown that vegetation greening is a key factor influencing changes in the WUE and CUE of vegetation, therefore, the implementation of ecological engineering will be an important step in combating climate change.

Abstract:Observed northern extratropical land greening is consistent with anthropogenic forcings, where greenhouse gases play a dominant role, but not with simulations that include only natural forcings and internal climate variability. Significant land greening in the northern extratropical latitudes (NEL) has been documented through satellite observations during the past three decades1,2,3,4,5. This enhanced vegetation growth has broad implications for surface energy, water and carbon budgets, and ecosystem services across multiple scales6,7,8. Discernible human impacts on the Earth’s climate system have been revealed by using statistical frameworks of detection–attribution9,10,11. These impacts, however, were not previously identified on the NEL greening signal, owing to the lack of long-term observational records, possible bias of satellite data, different algorithms used to calculate vegetation greenness, and the lack of suitable simulations from coupled Earth system models (ESMs). Here we have overcome these challenges to attribute recent changes in NEL vegetation activity. We used two 30-year-long remote-sensing-based leaf area index (LAI) data sets12,13, simulations from 19 coupled ESMs with interactive vegetation, and a formal detection and attribution algorithm14,15. Our findings reveal that the observed greening record is consistent with an assumption of anthropogenic forcings, where greenhouse gases play a dominant role, but is not consistent with simulations that include only natural forcings and internal climate variability. These results provide the first clear evidence of a discernible human fingerprint on physiological vegetation changes other than phenology and range shifts11.
Air Pollution Weakens Global Spring Greening

Abstract:Abstract Climate change is causing widespread land surface greening in spring1–4, but the impacts of anthropogenic air pollution on these changes remain poorly understood. Using global ground and satellite observations of fine particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) from 2000 to 2020, here we show that PM2.5 concentration offsets global spring greening as indicated by significant decreases in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI), and solar-induced fluorescence (SIF). Our experiments and meta-analyses involving up to 104 worldwide species reveal that pollution-induced greenness declines are primarily due to physical blockage and damage to leaf stomata. However, factors such as increased diffuse radiation and nitrogen deposition may occasionally enhance greening. Moreover, we observed significant variations among state-of-art terrestrial ecosystem models in replicating these greenness declines, with incorrect representation of PM2.5 effects on vegetation greening for roughly one third of global land coverage, further underscoring the importance of empirical data for benchmarking these models. This study reveals the negative feedback between anthropogenic air pollution and terrestrial carbon uptake, emphasizing the critical need for major polluting countries to mitigate air pollution and CO2 emissions.

Abstract:Changes in vegetation structure are expected to influence the redistribution of heat and moisture; however, how variations in the leaf area index (LAI) affect this global energy partitioning is not yet quantified. Here, we estimate that a unit change in LAI leads to 3.66 ± 0.45 and −3.26 ± 0.41 W m −2 in latent (LE) and sensible ( H ) fluxes, respectively, over the 1982–2016 period. Analysis of an ensemble of data-driven products shows that these sensitivities increase by about 20% over the observational period, prominently in regions with a limited water supply, probably because of an increased transpiration/evaporation ratio. Global greening has caused a decrease in the Bowen ratio ( B = H /LE) of −0.010 ± 0.002 per decade, which is attributable to the increased evaporative surface. Such a direct LAI effect on energy fluxes is largely modulated by plant functional types (PFTs) and background climate conditions. Land surface models (LSMs) misrepresent this vegetation control, possibly due to underestimation of the biophysical responses to changes in the water availability and poor representation of LAI dynamics.

Abstract:Significant land greening since the 1980s has been detected through satellite observation, forest inventory, and Earth system modeling. However, whether and to what extent global land greening enhances ecosystem carbon stock remains uncertain. Here, using 40 global models, we first detected a positive correlation between the terrestrial ecosystem carbon stock and leaf area index (LAI) over time. Then, we diagnose the source of uncertainty of simulated the sensitivities of ecosystem carbon stock to LAI based on a traceability analysis. We found that the sensitivity of gross primary productivity (GPP) to LAI is the largest contributor to the model uncertainty in more than 60% of the vegetated grids. Using the ensemble of four long‐term global data sets of GPP and three satellite LAI products from 1982 to 2014, we provided an emergent constraint on the ecosystem carbon stock increase as 0.75 ± 0.46 kg C m−2 per unit LAI over global land areas. Furthermore, the biome‐based results reveal that the tropical forest regions have the highest inter‐model variation and model bias. Overall, this study identifies the uncertainty source and provides constrained estimates of the greening effect on ecosystem carbon stock at the global scale. However, we do not know if having more green land is helping the ecosystem store more carbon. Abstract:Satellite data show increasing leaf area of vegetation due to direct factors (human land-use management) and indirect factors (such as climate change, CO2 fertilization, nitrogen deposition and recovery from natural disturbances). Among these, climate change and CO2 fertilization effects seem to be the dominant drivers. However, recent satellite data (2000–2017) reveal a greening pattern that is strikingly prominent in China and India and overlaps with croplands world-wide. China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area. The greening in China is from forests (42%) and croplands (32%), but in India is mostly from croplands (82%) with minor contribution from forests (4.4%). China is engineering ambitious programmes to conserve and expand forests with the goal of mitigating land degradation, air pollution and climate change. Food production in China and India has increased by over 35% since 2000 mostly owing to an increase in harvested area through multiple cropping facilitated by fertilizer use and surface- and/or groundwater irrigation. Our results indicate that the direct factor is a key driver of the ‘Greening Earth’, accounting for over a third, and probably more, of the observed net increase in green leaf area. They highlight the need for a realistic representation of human land-use practices in Earth system models.

Abstract:Forest gain in the tropics can cool the land surface by altering the energy budget through biophysical processes. Many countries have adopted forestation as part of their strategies for tackling climate warming. However, the biophysical effects of forest gain have generally been estimated based on the symmetrical reversal of ongoing tropical forest loss. Here we use multiple sources of satellite remote sensing data to explore the sensitivities of land surface temperature to forest gain and loss, and find forest loss warming the surface by 0.56 ± 0.12 °C and forest gain cooling the surface by 0.10 ± 0.09 °C. This asymmetry indicates weaker biophysical effects of forest gain on local temperature, which we attribute to contrasting changes of vegetation properties, such as leaf area and greenness. We find that current Earth system models fail to capture the observed asymmetry and thus could overestimate the cooling effect of afforestation in future. This highlights the need to improve representation of forest demographic impacts on biophysics-related vegetation properties, such as leaf area index, albedo and canopy structure, to better estimate the effects of tropical forestation on surface temperature.
