Mindfulness and Health: The Nursing Science Bridge

Abstract:Western Journal of Nursing Research: Special Issue on Mindfulness and HealthOver the past two decades, there has been increasing interest in the use of mindfulness-based interventions to promote health, facilitate adaptation to stressful life events, and to reduce symptoms of illness and disease across various age groups and populations. Recently, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that the use of meditation practices is one of the fastest growing health trends in the United States, with a threefold increase over five years (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Clarke et al., 2018</a>). Furthermore, in the last decade, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have funded over 500 studies examining mindfulness and more than 1,200 clinical trials investigating mindfulness interventions have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Mindfulness-based programs are widely used in a variety of settings, including hospitals (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Garland et al., 2017</a>), schools (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Vickery & Dorjee, 2015</a>), workplaces (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Heckenberg et al., 2018</a>), and in the military (<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">Goldberg et al., 2020</a>), to name a few. In addition, over 200 apps are now available on smartphones and computers to guide mindfulness practice.
