Abstract:Objectives To assess the clinical performance of class II restorations performed by repeatedly preheated resin composite "RC" at 68°C up to ten times. Methods 105 patients were selected and randomized into three groups, each comprising 35 patients. Each patient was provided with a single class II Bulk-fill resin composite "BF-RC" posterior restoration based on the number of preheating cycles; group I (H0): The BF-RC was packed non-heated, group II (H1): BF-RC preheated once, and group III(H10): BF-RC preheated ten cycles. These restorations were evaluated at 1, 3,6, and 12 months, using the modified United States Public Health Service "USPHS". Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test, and Friedmann test, where p=0.05. Results All the 105 restorations did not suffer from any clinical situation that recommended replacement regarding retention, fracture, secondary caries, or anatomical form. Although all performed restorations did have Alpha and Bravo scores with good clinical performance, the non-preheated RC restorations"" suffered from relatively inferior clinical performance through the follow-up period regarding marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, and color matching when compared to preheated groups. One and ten times of preheating conducted better clinical performance. Conclusions After 12-months follow-up, although no restoration needed replacement or repair in the 3 tested groups, restorations with single and ten times of preheating aided in better clinical performance of RC restorations compared to the non-preheated restorations. Preheating of RC for 10 times could be used safely with good clinical performance of restorations. Clinical Significance By continually preheating RC syringe up to ten times, the dentist will not only benefit from the enhanced clinical performance and easiness of application but also will use preheated RC syringes without hesitation, relying on the absence of drawbacks related to multiple preheating cycles.

Abstract:Introduction: Bulk-fill composite restorations displayed substantial annual failure related to imperfect marginal adaptation. Although preheated composites improved, marginal adaptation demonstrated early loss of plasticity. A new technique of ultrasonics plasticization was used for fabricating restorations.Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical behavior of bulk-fill composite resin restorations plasticized by preheating and ultrasonics.Methodology: Randomized split-mouth double-blinded clinical trial was designed. Bulk-fill composite resin (Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill Ivoclar Vivadent products, Delhi) was used to fill 56 cavities. In 28 restorations, composite resin was plasticized by preheating in composite warmer (Delta Co., India) and remaining were plasticized with modified ultrasonic-retreatment tip-RT No 2 (Cricdental, India). Clinical follow-up assessments were done at 6 and 12 months using Ryge's criteria. Mann-Whitney <i>U</i>-test was used for statistical analysis with <i>P</i> < 0.05 and effect size of 0.61.Results: Hundred percent clinical success with ultrasonic plasticized group and 95.2% success with preheated composite resin group were observed without statistical significance.Conclusion: The ultrasonics plasticization of composite resin demonstrated comparable results with that of preheated composite resin after 6- and 12-month recall. Use of vibration energy utilizing the thixotropic effect might have resulted in better clinical performance.

Abstract:Abstract Background Preheating is one of several innovative approaches and improvements developed to increase the durability and clinical behavior of resin composites. Development of preheated composites is to reduce its viscosity in order to improve resin composite adaptation and placement ease. The purpose of this clinical trial was to study the effect of preheating Bis-GMA free and Bis-GMA-containing resin composites at different temperatures on the pulpal floor and restoration temperature. A total of twenty individuals (N = 40) have two carious posterior teeth that need to be restored were randomly assigned to one of two groups based on the type of restorative materials used: (group 1) Bis-GMA-containing resin composite VisCalor bulk (VCB), and (group 2) Bis-GMA-free resin composite Admira Fusion x-tra (AFX). Preheating temperatures of 50 °C and 70 °C were utilized to separate each group into two subgroups. Class I or II cavities were prepared. Thermometer device with two separate K-type temperature probes was used to measure the base line temperature values at the pulpal floor before beginning the restorative procedure (C 0 ) , pulpal floor during packing of preheated composite (C 1 ) , the top composite surface after packing and before curing (C 2 ) , pulpal floor after curing of the preheated composite (C 3 ) , and top composite surface after curing (C 4 ) . One-way ANOVA and the Kruskal–Wallis test were used to analyze the data. Results The measured temperature of pulpal floor for both preheated VCB or AFX at 50 °C or 70 °C revealed significant increasing from base line measured temperature to during packing as well as after curing with ( P -value < 0.001). There was no significant difference for mean composite surface temperature for both preheated materials at 50 °C or 70 °C whether before or after curing. Conclusions Preheating of bulk fill Bis-GMA free and containing resin composite rises both the pulpal floor and the restoration temperature; meanwhile, the rise in temperature was limited. The application of the curing unit caused the greatest temperature rise.
Evaluation of Preheating Methods for Bulk-Fill Thermoviscous Composite in Non-Carious Cervical Lesions: A 24-month Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Objective This 24-month, double-blind, split-mouth randomized equivalence clinical trial compared the retention rates of a bulk-fill thermoviscous composite resin using two different preheating methods for the restoration of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Material and Methods A total of 120 NCCLs were randomized into two groups (n = 60 each). In one group, a bulk-fill thermoviscous composite resin (VisCalor bulk, Voco GmbH) was preheated using a dispenser heater (DH, VisCalor Caps dispenser/warmer), while in the other group, the same resin was preheated with a bench heater (BH, Caps Warmer). In the BH group, the composite underwent preheating at 68°C using a heating bench for 3 min while in the DH group, the composite was preheated at the same temperature for 30 s using a dispenser heater. Subsequently, the preheated bulk-fill thermoviscous composite resin was directly applied to the NCCLs. The restorations were evaluated at baseline, and after 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of clinical service using the FDI criteria. The total working time was recorded. The study used TOST-P to assess groups equivalence, Kaplan-Meier analysis for retention/fracture rate, log-rank test for secondary outcomes' survival distributions, and paired t-tests for comparing time per clinical step between groups (α = 0.05). Results After 24 months, 106 restorations were evaluated. Four restorations were lost—two from the DH group and two from the BH group—resulting in similar retention rates for both groups (96.1%, 95% CI 86.8 - 98.9, p > 0.05). The hazard ratio was 0.83 (95% CI 0.26 to 2.72), indicating no significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). All other FDI parameters were deemed clinically acceptable. However, the total working time for the BH group was significantly longer than that for the DH group (p < 0.001). Conclusions Both preheating protocols employed for the bulk-fill thermoviscous composite resin demonstrated high and equivalent retention rates after 24 months, the other FDI parameters were deemed clinically acceptable over the same period. Clinical Significance Clinicians can choose either method for heating the thermoviscous composite resin for restoration of non-carious cervical lesions, as they do not impact important clinical outcomes after 24 months. The total working time for the bench heater is higher than that for the dispenser heater due to the need for preheating of the bench heater.

Abstract:This study aimed to clinically evaluate the performance of non-preheated bulk fill resin composite in class II cavities versus one, five and ten-time preheating cycles at 68 °C. Eighty-four recruited participants were randomly allocated into four groups (21 patients per group). One posterior Bulk-fill proximal restoration was performed for each participant according to the preheating cycles where in group I; teeth were restored with non-heated resin composite, group II: One preheating cycle of composite syringe was performed prior restoration, and group III: five preheating cycles while for group IV: Ten preheating cycles were performed. These restorations were clinically evaluated at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Statistical analysis was performed using one way ANOVA, with set p-value < 0.05. The results revealed that there was perfect agreement between both observers and observations WK (95% CI) [0.908 (0.780:1.000)] and [0.940 (0.824:1.000)], respectively. All restorations showed acceptable clinical performance with alpha and bravo scores. No replacement was required for any restoration. No statistically significant differences were detected between the control and intervention groups across all parameters during the various evaluation stages. It could be concluded that the clinical performance of ten cycles of repeated preheated bulk fill resin composite was equivalent to that of non-preheating resin composites after 24 months follow-up period, with great improvement in manipulation. Preheating of resin composite could be performed up to ten cycles prior to placement without any clinical adverse consequences on the performance of the restoration.

Abstract:Introduction: Bulk-fill composites may simplify posterior restorations, saving time and reducing technical complexity. Post-operative sensitivity is a risk of posterior composites; bulk-fill composites could mitigate this. This single centre, double-blinded, parallel groups randomised controlled trial compared postoperative sensitivity following restoration of class II carious lesions with bulk-fill or conventional, layered composite. Null hypothesis: there will be no difference in post-operative sensitivity between the two materials. Methods: Participants requiring class II restoration of posterior teeth were randomised to bulk-fill (FU) (Coltene Fill-UpTM) or conventional, layered (BE) (Coltene Brilliant Everglow) composite. Allocation was concealed during cavity preparation. Only the operating dentist knew allocation. The outcome was 24 h post-operative sensitivity. Results: 41 patients were randomised (20/group). Two patients from FU group were excluded from analysis (factors unrelated to intervention). There was no difference in postoperative sensitivity at 24 h nor any time point. Only participant age and baseline sensitivity scores significantly impacted post-operative sensitivity. One restoration debonded in FU group at 10 days, with no other adverse effects. No difference in time taken to place restorations was seen. Conclusions: Within the study's limitations, post-operative sensitivity after class II posterior restorations was no different in bulk-fill restorations compared with conventional, incrementally cured composite.
Examining the Impact of Preheating on the Fracture Toughness and Microhardness of Composite Resin: A Systematic Review

Abstract:The objective of this comprehensive study was to systematically evaluate the effects of preheating on two critical mechanical properties, microhardness and fracture toughness, in resin composite materials. The overarching goal was to provide valuable insights into the potential benefits and limitations of this technique for enhancing the overall mechanical performance of such materials. To achieve this, an extensive and systematic electronic search was conducted across multiple reputable databases, including MEDLINE/PubMed, SCOPUS, ProQuest, SpringerLink, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, with data collection extending until June 2023. This rigorous search process resulted in the identification of 29 pertinent articles, which were subjected to a thorough risk of bias assessment employing the Quality Assessment Tool For In Vitro Studies (QUIN). The findings of this comprehensive investigation revealed several noteworthy trends. First, concerning microhardness, all the studies consistently demonstrated a positive effect of preheating on this mechanical property. This uniformity in results corroborates the initial hypothesis that preheating indeed enhances microhardness in resin composite materials. Second, with respect to fracture toughness, a majority of the studies provided evidence supporting the notion that preheating has a favorable influence on this particular mechanical property. This alignment of outcomes suggests that preheating can be a beneficial technique for improving fracture toughness in resin composites. However, it is essential to note that there were a few exceptions within the collected data, where preheating appeared to lead to a decrease in fracture toughness. Additionally, one study reported no statistically significant effect on fracture toughness. These deviations from the general trend highlight the complexity of the relationship between preheating and fracture toughness, indicating that other factors or material-specific nuances may come into play. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that preheating resin composites can improve microhardness and fracture toughness, offering potential benefits for dental restorations. Yet, conflicting data warrants further research to uncover the reasons behind these discrepancies. Future studies should also investigate preheating's broader impact on composite resin materials to gain a comprehensive understanding of its applications and limitations in the field.

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this prospective randomized clinical study was to compare the clinical performance of thermo-viscous bulk-fill resin composite versus conventional bulk-fill resin composite in proximal compound posterior restorations. Materials and Methods: A total of fifty-four Class II cavities were prepared in forty-seven patients. The patients were divided into two groups according to the type of the bulk-fill used (n=27).Group 1 : thermo-viscous bulk fill (Viscalor,Voco) while Group 2: conventional bulk fill (Xtra-fil ,Voco). Both groups received the same adhesive system; selective enamel etching using the single dosed dual cured universal adhesive (Futura-bond U, Voco). All restorations were clinically evaluated at periods of 1 week (initial recall), after six months, and after one year. Assessment was done according to the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Data were statistically analyzed using Friedman to compare between the tested periods for each group (p 0.05. Conclusions: Thermo-Viscous Bulk fill composite (Viscalor bulk fill) and conventional packable bulk fill composite resin (X-tra-fil) exhibited comparable acceptable clinical performance after one year of clinical evaluation.

Abstract:Resin composite pre-heating is a novel approach that might improve handling and marginal adaptation of the unset material paste in clinical application. The goal of this review article is to compile all laboratory experiments on resin composite preheating and see how it impacts the mechanical properties of the material. Results have shown that preheating composite resins improves the degree of conversion, stiffness, marginal adaptability, and microhardness. While flexural strength is unbothered, polymerization shrinkage is hindered, and the microleakage results are unknown.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo perform a review on the influence of preheating and/or heating of resinous and ionomeric materials on their physical and mechanical properties and to discuss the benefits and methods of preheating/heating that have been used.Material and methodsA search was performed in the Pubmed, Scopus, Scielo, and gray literature databases. In vitro studies published from 1980 until now were searched using the descriptors “composite resins OR glass ionomer cements OR resin cements OR adhesives AND heating OR preheating.” Data extraction and quality of work evaluation were performed by two independent evaluators.ResultsAt the end of reading the search titles and abstracts, 74 articles were selected. Preheating of composite resins reduces viscosity, facilitates adaptation to cavity preparation walls, increases the degree of conversion, and decreases the polymerization shrinkage. Preheating of resin cements improves strength, adhesion, and degree of conversion. Dental adhesives showed good results such as higher bond strength to dentin. However, unlike resinous materials, ionomeric materials have an increase in viscosity upon heating.ConclusionsPreheating improves the mechanical and physical properties. However, there is a lack of clinical studies to confirm the advantages of preheating technique.Clinical relevancePreheating of dental restorative materials is a simple, safe, and successful technique. In order to achieve good results, agility and training are necessary so the material would not lose heat until the restorative procedure. Also, care is necessary to avoid bubbles and formation of gaps, which compromises the best restoration performance.

Pre-heating of high-viscosity bulk-fill resin composites: effects on shrinkage force and monomer conversion

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the influence of pre-heating of high-viscosity bulk-fill composite materials on their degree of conversion and shrinkage force formation. Methods: Four bulk-fill composite materials (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill-TECBF, x-tra fil-XF, QuixFil-QF, SonicFill-SF) and one conventional nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram-TEC) were used. The test materials were either kept at room temperature or pre-heated to 68°C by means of a commercial heating device, before being photoactivated with a LED curing unit for 20s at 1170mW/cm(2). Shrinkage forces (n=5) of 1.5-mm-thick specimens were recorded in real-time for 15min inside a temperature-controlled chamber at 25°C (simulating intraoral temperature after rubber dam application) with a custom-made stress analyzer. Degree of conversion (n=5) was determined at the bottom of equally thick (1.5mm) specimens using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Data were analyzed with Student's t-test, ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post-hoc test (α=0.05). Results: Composite pre-heating significantly increased the degree of conversion of TECBF, but had no effect on monomer conversion of the other materials investigated. For each of the test materials, pre-heated composite generated significantly lower shrinkage forces than room-temperature composite. At both temperature levels, TECBF created the significantly highest shrinkage forces, and QF caused significantly higher shrinkage forces than both XF and TEC. Conclusions: Both the composite material and the pre-cure temperature affect shrinkage force formation. Pre-heating of bulk-fill and conventional restorative composites prior to photoactivation decreases polymerization-induced shrinkage forces without compromising the degree of conversion. Clinical significance: Composite pre-heating significantly reduces shrinkage force formation of high-viscosity bulk-fill and conventional resin composites, while maintaining or increasing the degree of monomer conversion, dependent upon the specific composite material used.
Evaluating the effect of preheating on resin composites in pit-and-fissure caries treatments with a digital intraoral scanner

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of preheating on the microleakage and surface hardness of resin composites in the treatment of pit-and-fissure caries with various widths, as measured by an intraoral scanner. Methods: A total of 153 L-shaped cavities with different widths (1 mm, 1.6 mm and 2 mm) were prepared on the buccal or palatal/lingual surfaces of human molars. The cavities were measured in three dimensions by a TRIOS scanner and then filled with various resins (room temperature Z350 flowable resin and room temperature and 60 ℃ Z350 universal resin). Microleakage and gap formation at 2 sites were evaluated by stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Resin samples were prepared, and the top surface Vickers hardness (VHNtop) of all samples was measured at 1 day and 30 days postirradiation. Results: No difference were observed in the 3D scans for the cavities sizes among groups with the same width. For the 1 mm-wide cavity, the lowest microleakage was obtained with the flowable group; for the 1.6 mm-wide cavity, the nonpreheating universal group showed the highest microleakage at site 1, and the preheating group exhibited lower microleakage than that of the nonpreheating universal group at site 2; and for the 2 mm-wide cavity, the preheating group presented lower microleakage at site 2. The gap formations were consistent with the microleakage degrees. The preheating group exhibited the highest VHNtop at 1 day and 30 days postirradiation. Significance: A digital intraoral scanner could be used to scan the cavities in three dimensions. Preheating technology could reduce the microleakage of Z350 universal resin and enhance its surface hardness.
Clinical performance of preheating thermoviscous composite resin for non-carious cervical lesions restoration: a 24-month randomized clinical trial

Methods A total of 120 restorations were restored on NCCLs using a preheated (VisCalor bulk, Voco GmbH) and a non-heated (Admira Fusion, Voco GmbH) composite resins with 60 restorations per group. A universal adhesive in the selective enamel conditioning was applied. In the PHT group, composite was heated at 68°C for using a bench heater. In the NHT group, no heating was employed. Both restorative materials were dispensed into caps and inserted into the NCCLs. The restorations were evaluated at baseline, 6, 12, 18, and after 24 months of clinical service using the FDI criteria. Statistical analysis was performed with Kaplan–Meier estimation analysis for retention/fracture rate and Chi-square test for the other FDI parameters (α=0.05). Results After 24 months 108 restorations were assessed. Seven restorations were lost (two for PHT group and five for NHT group), and the retention rates (95% confidence interval [CI]) were 96.7% (81.5-99.9) for PHT group and 90.8% (81.1-96.0) for NHT group, with no statistical differences between them (p > 0.05). The hazard ratio (95% CI) was 0.52 (0.27 to 1.01), with no significant difference within groups. In terms of all other FDI parameters that were assessed, all restorations were deemed clinically acceptable. Conclusions Both composites showed high rates of retention rates after 24 months. Clinical significance The clinical performance of the new preheated thermoviscous was found to be as good as the non-heated composite after 24-month of clinical evaluation in non-carious cervical lesions. Abstract:Purpose. Resin-based materials have been preheated by using different techniques and commercial devices. However, a consensus on the clinical protocol for cementing with preheated composite resins is lacking. The aim of this scoping review was to identify the different methods used for heating composite resins as used for cementing indirect adhesive restorations and to determine the benefits and limitations. Study Selection. A search was performed on PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, LIVIVO, and the nonpeer-reviewed literature database. Studies on preheating composite resins for cementing indirect restorations were included, with no restrictions on the type of study, year of publication, or language. The following data were extracted: preheating technique, the device used for preheating, preset temperature, and warming time. Results. In total, 304 studies were identified. After removing duplicates, 270 articles were selected, and 14 articles were included in the final evaluation. Half of the included studies reported similar preheating techniques using the Calset device for composite resins. The temperatures of 54°C and 68°C were most frequently reported, with a mean warming time of 5 minutes. Conclusions. Preheating composite resins for the cementation of indirect restorations reduces viscosity, but the material must be used promptly after removal from the device. Practical Implications. Different methodologies for preheating composite resins have been reported and used in clinical dental practice. To achieve good results and guide the clinician on use, the techniques for heating composite resins for cementation need to be standardized. Keeping the material warm until the restorative procedure, the thickness of the indirect restoration, and the composition of the composite resins can directly affect the outcome of the procedure.
Comparison of postoperative hypersensitivity between Total-etch and Universal adhesive system: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract:The objective was to determine the postoperative hypersensitivity of two-step Total-etch as compared to one-step Universal adhesives followed by composite restorations on 100 patients by applying Total-etch on one tooth and Universal adhesive on another tooth. The bonds and teeth were randomly selected. Postoperative hypersensitivity was recorded by visual analog scale before, immediately after, and 24 h after the restoration using cold stimulus. The Mann–Whitney test was applied for statistical comparison of postoperative hypersensitivity between the two bonds as well as for any significant difference in genders with each bond. No significant difference was found between postoperative hypersensitivity of the two adhesives before (p-value = 0.57), immediately after (p-value = 0.604), and 24 h after (p-value = 0.728) the restoration. Males showed more hypersensitivity with Total-etch as compared to females before (p-value = 0.037), immediately after (p-value = 0.047), and 24 h after the restoration (p-value = 0.022). No significant difference was found between gender and Universal adhesive at all three stages (p-value > 0.05). The results suggest no significant difference in postoperative hypersensitivity between the two materials when good sample size and proper technique were observed along with the removal of bias like different patients having different pain perceptions and multiple operators having different operating skills. Males showed more hypersensitivity to Total-etch.

Abstract:Context: The restorative complexities associated with endodontically treated teeth surpass those encountered with vital ones. The field of adhesive dentistry experienced a significant advancement that led to a shift in treatment approach toward bonded restorations. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the clinical performance of using indirect Milled composite or direct bulk-fill resin composite restorations for endo-treated teeth, as well as to measure the amount of wear on the occlusal tables of both restorations using a digital scanner. Subjects and methods: Participants were divided into two groups, where R1 represents the endodontically treated teeth restored with Milled composite, R2 represents the endodontically treated teeth restored with direct bulk-fill composite where 13 patients in each group were treated with a total number of 26 restorations in all patients. Where each restoration was assessed immediately at baseline (T0), 6 months (T6), and 12 months (T12) using the modified United States Public Health Service criteria. Moreover, wear was measured immediately at (T0) and (T12) intraorally and extraorally using intraoral scanners and three-dimensional surface-based superimposition software. Statistical analysis used: Chi-squared test, Mann-Whitney U-test, Friedman's test, Nemenyi post hoc test, Shapiro-Wilk test, paired t-tests, intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: At all intervals, the majority of the cases in both groups had an alpha score. Some cases exhibited bravo scores in both groups at T6 and T12 regarding the color match, marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, and marginal integrity without statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). Direct nanohybrid bulk-fill resin composite showed a greater amount of wear without a statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). Extraoral measurement was significantly higher than intraoral measurement (P < 0.001). There was no significant reliability/agreement between both methods. Conclusions: Both milled composite and direct bulk-fill resin composite restorations in endodontically treated teeth demonstrated appropriate clinical performance and minimal wear over an 1-year follow-up period.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To analyze the relationship between the cavity depth and liners with postoperative sensitivity of resin composite restorations.METHODS: A clinical follow-up was conducted on 319 resin composite restorations made in the final year of an undergraduate program over a 3-year period. Along with the analyses of cavity type, cavity depth, type of pulpal protection and the materials used, the postoperative sensitivity was also examined on each restoration.RESULTS: Thirty-nine percent of the restorations had no protective layer (Group 1). As the depth of the prepared cavities increased, the restorations received one of the three pulpal protection methods; a calcium hydroxide base (Group 2), glass ionomer cement (Group 3), or protection with a calcium hydroxide base in combination with glass ionomer cement (Group 4). The incidence of postoperative sensitivity showed no significant difference among Groups 1, 2 and 3, but was significantly lower in Group 1 than in Group 4. The restorations made in shallow and medium depth cavities demonstrated significantly less-postoperative sensitivity than those made in deep cavities. The newer generation dentine-bonding agents showed a significantly lower incidence of postoperative sensitivity than the early generation group.CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative sensitivity in resin composite restorations was not related to the absence of protective layers but increased with the depth of cavities restored with the resin composite. The type of dentine-bonding agents could also be responsible for postoperative sensitivity.

Abstract:Objective: Collect information on the use of preheated resin as a cementing agent and verify through scientific evidence if it can be considered an optimal option for its use. Materials and methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed, Scielo, Refseek and LILACS. Included are publications in English and Spanish, published between 2018 and 2022, literature reviews, systematic reviews, clinical case reports, in vitro studies, and experimental studies. Duplicate articles, inaccessible due to cost and that do not refer to the preheated resin as a cementing agent were excluded. A total of 346 publications were found, of which, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles were selected. Conclusions: The preheating of the composite resin presents several clinical benefits such as: reduction of viscosity, better marginal conformability, increase of microhardness, rigidity and degree of conversion.The increase in pulp temperature can be harmless when the temperature of the material is up to 60°. It can be considered appropriate for clinical implementation.
Effect of Repeated Preheating and Light Curing Distance on Flexural Strength and Degree of Conversion of Two Resin-Based Materials

Abstract:ObjectiveThis study was conducted to evaluate the effect of resin-based material, repeated preheating and light curing distance on flexural strength and degree of conversion. Materials and MethodsA total of 220 specimens were used in this study. One-hundred sixty rectangular specimens measuring 12mm x 2 mm x 2mm were dedicated for flexural strength (FS) using three-point bending test. Sixty disc-shaped specimens measuring 4mm x 2mm were dedicated for degree of conversion (DC) using ATR-FTIR spectrophotometer. Specimens were divided into two main groups according to material used; SPRG-containing Beautifil II LS and non-SPRG containing Filtek™ Z250 XT. Each group was subdivided into five subgroups according to the number of preheating cycles to which the syringe was exposed: no preheating, one, five, ten, or fifteen cycles of preheating. Then, each subgroup was further subdivided according to light curing distance (0mm and 10mm). Specimens were stored for 24 hours then subjected to the corresponding testing method (FS n=8, DC n=3). Data was statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc test.Results Nanohybrid composite recorded significantly higher FS (p<0.001). Also, a significant effect on FS was revealed for preheating (p=0.001), light curing distance (p=0.038), and the interaction between preheating and distance (p=0.027). Meanwhile, giomer recorded significantly higher DC (p<0.001). All other variables and their interactions were non-significant.Conclusion 1. Material formulation has a significant effect on polymerization efficiency reflected in FS and DC.2. Preheating and light curing distance had a significant effect on FS, but not on DC.
