Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation high‐energy‐density rechargeable batteries. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metal anodes plays a significant role in influencing the Li deposition morphology and the cycle life of LMBs. However, a thorough understanding on the mechanisms of SEI formation and evolution is still inadequate. In this review, the progress in understanding structures, properties, and influencing factors of SEI, as well as efficient strategies of tailoring SEI are focused upon. First, the compositions, models, and recent progress in characterizing atomic structures of SEI are summarized. Second, the properties of SEI, including electronic conduction, ionic conduction, stability, and mechanical properties are elucidated. Structures and properties of SEI are greatly affected by multiple factors, thus interactions between these factors and SEI are systematically discussed. Correlations of SEI with Li deposition morphology, rate capability, and cycle life are further summarized. Moreover, efficient strategies of tailoring SEI with desired properties, including in situ SEI and ex situ SEI, are also reviewed. Finally, future directions, including in‐operando techniques, multi‐modality approaches for characterization of SEI, and artificial intelligence assisted understanding of correlations between electrolyte components and SEI properties are proposed.

Abstract:Li metal anode has become a research hotspot again because of its high specific capacity (3860 mAh g−1 or 2061 mAh cm−3) and lowest potential among the alkali metals (−3.04 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode), which is also known as the “return of the king”. The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a key factor in determining battery safety, power capability, Li deposition morphology, shelf life, and cycle life. In order to solve the instability problem of the inherent SEI, SEI-forming additives in electrolytes and artificial SEI are mainly adopted to improve the anode's comprehensive performance. Here, we highlight the formation principles, function, evolution, and degradation mechanism of the natural SEI. On this basis, the latest research progress on the design and the construction of modified SEI layers toward stable Li metal anode in recent years are systematically reviewed. Furthermore, the advanced theoretical analysis, modeling, and characterization techniques for the SEI are also summarized. Finally, the research status of modified SEI and future research trends for this hot research area are comprehensively evaluated. We believe this timely review would advance further understanding and development of the SEI for Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Interfacial chemistry between lithium metal anodes and electrolytes plays a vital role in regulating the Li plating/stripping behavior and improving the cycling performance of Li metal batteries. Constructing a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metal anodes is now understood to be a requirement for progress in achieving feasible Li‐metal batteries. Recently, the application of novel analytical tools has led to a clearer understanding of composition and the fine structure of the SEI. This further promoted the development of interface engineering for stable Li metal anodes. In this review, the SEI formation mechanism, conceptual models, and the nature of the SEI are briefly summarized. Recent progress in probing the atomic structure of the SEI and elucidating the fundamental effect of interfacial stability on battery performance are emphasized. Multiple factors including current density, mechanical strength, operating temperature, and structure/composition homogeneity that affect the interfacial properties are comprehensively discussed. Moreover, strategies for designing stable Li‐metal/electrolyte interfaces are also reviewed. Finally, new insights and future directions associated with Li‐metal anode interfaces are proposed to inspire more revolutionary solutions toward commercialization of Li metal batteries.

Abstract:The failure of Li metal anodes can be attributed to their unstable electrode/electrolyte interface, especially the continuous formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and dendrite growth. To address this challenge, scholars proposed the construction of artificial SEI (ASEI) as a promising strategy. The ASEI mainly homogenizes the distribution of Li+, mitigates dendrite growth, facilitates Li+ diffusion, and protects the Li metal anode from electrolyte erosion. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress in the construction of ASEI layers in terms of their chemical composition. Fundamental understanding of the mechanisms, design principles, and functions of the main components are analyzed. We also propose future research directions to facilitate the in-depth study of ASEI and its practical applications in Li metal batteries. This review offers perspectives that will greatly contribute to the design of practical Li metal electrodes.

Abstract:Li metal has been regarded as one of the most promising anodes for high-energy-density storage systems due to its high theoretical capacity and lowest electrochemical potential. Unfortunately, an unstable and non-uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) deriving from the spontaneous reaction between Li metal anode and electrolyte causes uneven Li deposition, resulting in the growth of Li dendrites and low Coulombic efficiency, which have greatly hindered the practical application of Li metal batteries. Thus, the construction of a stable SEI is an effective approach to suppress the growth of Li dendrites and enhance the electrochemical performances of Li metal anode. In this review, we firstly introduce the formation process of inferior SEI of Li metal anode and the corresponding challenges caused by the unstable SEI. Next, recent progresses to modify SEI layer through the regulation of electrolyte compositions and ex-situ protective coating are summarized. Finally, the remained issues, challenges, and perspectives are also proposed on the basis of current research status and progress. Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is vital for tuning the Li deposition/dissolution behavior of Li metal anode (LMA). In this review, developments and the latest research of SEI on LMA along with its compositions and structures for long‐span‐life Li metal batteries are summarized. Further research on understanding SEI for LMA toward practical use are still in demand. Lithium metal anode attracts great attention because of its high specific capacity and low redox potential. However, the uncontrolled dendrite growth and its infinite volume expansion during cycling are extremely detrimental to the practical application. The formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a decisive role in the behavior of lithium deposition/dissolution during electrochemical processing. Clarifying the essential relationship between SEI and battery performance is a priority. Research in SEI is accelerated in recent years by the use of advanced simulation tools and characterization techniques. The chemical composition and micromorphology of SEIs with various electrolytes are analyzed to clarify the effects of SEI on the Coulombic efficiency and cycle life. In this review, the recent research progress focused on the composition and structure of SEI is summarized, and various advanced characterization techniques applied to the investigation of SEI are discussed. The comparisons of the representative experimental results and theoretical models of SEI in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are exhibited, and the underneath mechanisms of interaction between SEI and the electrochemical properties of the cell are highlighted. This work offers new insights into the development of safe LMBs with higher energy density.

Abstract:Lithium metal is a very promising anode material for achieving high energy density for next generation battery systems due to its low redox potential and high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mA h g(-1). However, dendrite formation and low coulombic efficiency during cycling greatly hindered its practical applications. The formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium metal anode (LMA) holds the key to resolving these problems. A lot of techniques such as electrolyte modification, electrolyte additive introduction, and artificial SEI layer coating have been developed to form a stable SEI with capability to facilitate fast Li+ transportation and to suppress Li dendrite formation and undesired side reactions. It is well accepted that the chemical and physical properties of the SEI on the LMA are closely related to the kinetics of Li+ transport across the electrolyte-electrode interface and Li deposition behavior, which in turn affect the overall performance of the cell. Unfortunately, the chemical and structural complexity of the SEI makes it the least understood component of the battery cell. Recently various advanced in situ and ex situ characterization techniques have been developed to study the SEI and the results are quite interesting. Therefore, an overview about these new findings and development of SEI engineering and characterization is quite valuable to the battery research community. In this perspective, different strategies of SEI engineering are summarized, including electrolyte modification, electrolyte additive application, and artificial SEI construction. In addition, various advanced characterization techniques for investigating the SEI formation mechanism are discussed, including in situ visualization of the lithium deposition behavior, the quantification of inactive lithium, and using X-rays, neutrons and electrons as probing beams for both imaging and spectroscopy techniques with typical examples.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is widely recognized as a promising anode material for next-generation Li secondary batteries, owing to its exceptionally high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g −1 and the lowest reduction potential (− 3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). However, the instability of the native solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) leads to dendrite growth, which poses significant safety risks and contributes to battery degradation. To address this issue, numerous strategies have been proposed to construct artificial SEI with good physical and chemical properties. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of advancements in constructing artificial SEI from the perspective of precursor materials (i.e., inorganic and organic inducers) and construction methods (i.e., in situ and ex situ). It focuses on the compositional and nanostructural changes of SEI engineered by different strategies and explores their resulting functional differences. Based on the summary of various strategies, prospective research directions for the development of artificial SEI are finally envisioned.

Abstract:A passivation layer called the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is formed on electrode surfaces from decomposition products of electrolytes. The SEI allows Li+ transport and blocks electrons in order to prevent further electrolyte decomposition and ensure continued electrochemical reactions. The formation and growth mechanism of the nanometer thick SEI films are yet to be completely understood owing to their complex structure and lack of reliable in situ experimental techniques. Significant advances in computational methods have made it possible to predictively model the fundamentals of SEI. This review aims to give an overview of state-of-the-art modeling progress in the investigation of SEI films on the anodes, ranging from electronic structure calculations to mesoscale modeling, covering the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrolyte reduction reactions, SEI formation, modification through electrolyte design, correlation of SEI properties with battery performance, and the artificial SEI design. Multi-scale simulations have been summarized and compared with each other as well as with experiments. Computational details of the fundamental properties of SEI, such as electron tunneling, Li-ion transport, chemical/mechanical stability of the bulk SEI and electrode/(SEI/) electrolyte interfaces have been discussed. This review shows the potential of computational approaches in the deconvolution of SEI properties and design of artificial SEI. We believe that computational modeling can be integrated with experiments to complement each other and lead to a better understanding of the complex SEI for the development of a highly efficient battery in the future.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are among the most promising candidates of high-energy-density devices for advanced energy storage. However, the growth of dendrites greatly hinders the practical applications of LMBs in portable electronics and electric vehicles. Constructing stable and efficient solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is among the most effective strategies to inhibit the dendrite growth and thus to achieve a superior cycling performance. In this review, the mechanisms of SEI formation and models of SEI structure are briefly summarized. The analysis methods to probe the surface chemistry, surface morphology, electrochemical property, dynamic characteristics of SEI layer are emphasized. The critical factors affecting the SEI formation, such as electrolyte component, temperature, current density, are comprehensively debated. The efficient methods to modify SEI layer with the introduction of new electrolyte system and additives, ex-situ-formed protective layer, as well as electrode design, are summarized. Although these works afford new insights into SEI research, robust and precise routes for SEI modification with well-designed structure, as well as understanding of the connection between structure and electrochemical performance, is still inadequate. A multidisciplinary approach is highly required to enable the formation of robust SEI for highly efficient energy storage systems.

Abstract:Li-alloy-based anode materials are very promising for breaking current energy limits of lithium-ion battery technologies. Unfortunately, these materials still suffer from poor solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) stability, resulting in unsatisfied electrochemical performances. The typical SEI formation method, electrochemical decomposition of electrolytes onto the active material surface, lacks a deliberate control of the SEI functions and structures. Here we propose a general method of manipulating the formation process, chemical composition, and morphology of the SEI for Li-alloy anodes, using Si and Ge nanoparticle anodes as the platform. The SEI was fabricated through a covalent anchoring of multiple functional components onto the active material surface, followed by electrochemical decomposition of the functional components and conventional electrolyte. Click reaction, serving as the covalent anchoring approach, allows an accurate control of the SEI composition and structure at the molecular level through tuning the chemical structure and amount of variety of functional components and provides an intimate contact between the SEI and the Li-alloy material surface contributed by the covalent bonding. The optimized Si nanoparticle SEI, functionalized by a unique combination of diverse components and containing a high concentration of organic components attributed to the preanchored functional components, presented a stable composition and durable morphology during cycling and led to an improved first cycle efficiency of Si nanoparticle anodes and its long cycle life in a full cell. This general method displays potential benefits to construct stable SEIs for other Li-alloy anodes.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have great potential to be the next major energy storage devices due to their obvious advantages and developing advanced electrodes and electrolytes is urgently necessary to promote its future industrialization. However, hard carbon as a state-of-the-art anode of SIBs still suffers from the low initial Coulomb efficiency and unsatisfactory rate capability, which could be improved by forming desirable solid electrolyte interphases (SEI) to some extent. Indeed, the chemistry and morphology of these interfacial layers are fundamental parameters affecting the overall battery operation, and optimizing the electrolyte to dictate the quality of SEI on hard carbon is a key strategy. Hence, this review summarizes the recent research on SEI design by electrolyte manipulation from solvents, salts, and additives. It also presents some potential mechanisms of SEI formation in various electrolyte systems. Besides, the current advanced characterization techniques for electrolyte and SEI structure analyses have been comprehensively discussed. Lastly, current challenges and future perspectives of SEI formation on hard carbon anode for SIBs are provided from the viewpoints of its compositions, evolution processes, structures, and characterization techniques, which will promote SEI efficient manipulation and improve the performance of hard carbon, and further contribute to the development of SIBs.

Abstract:An artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is demonstrated for the efficient and safe operation of a lithium metal anode. Composed of lithium-ion-conducting inorganic nanoparticles within a flexible polymer binder matrix, the rationally designed artificial SEI not only mechanically suppresses lithium dendrite formation but also promotes homogeneous lithium-ion flux, significantly enhancing the efficiency and cycle life of the lithium metal anode.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), known as an ionic conductor but electronic insulator, plays a dominant role in cycling stability and safety of rechargeable lithium metal batteries (RLMBs). Although tremendous endeavors have been devoted to identifying the chemical component and spatial distribution of SEI, the linkage between exact nanostructure and its stability still remains to be clarified. In this highly focused research area, plenty of profound papers have been published. However, structural insights, designing guidelines and corresponding stability evaluation approaches of SEI film are still not comprehensively summarized. In this review, we extract major breakthroughs of SEI structure, and then elucidate the mechanism insights of SEI film, including formation mechanism and transportation mechanism of Li+ in the SEI film. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the design principles and strategies for a stable SEI film. Afterwards, we propose general evaluation standards for the stability of SEI film, including chemical/electrochemical methods, atomic-level characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations. Finally, personal perspectives on the construction of stable SEI film are provided at the end of the manuscript. We envision that this timely review can be used as a handy reference for designing stable SEI films with a unique nanostructure and motivate researchers to build better RLMBs.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) represent the most promising next-generation high-energy density batteries. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on the lithium metal anode plays a crucial role in regulating lithium deposition and improving the cycling performance of LMBs. In this review, we comprehensively present the formation process of the SEI film, while elucidating the key properties such as electronic conductivity, ionic conductivity, and mechanical performance. Furthermore, various approaches for constructing the SEI film are discussed from both electrolyte regulation and artificial coating design perspectives. Lastly, future research directions along with development recommendations are also provided. Abstract:Li-alloy based anode materials are very promising for breaking current energy limits of lithium-ion battery technologies. At present, their practical applications are mainly hindered by the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) stability issue. SEIs of Li-alloy anode materials exhibit insufficient surface passivation to prevent electrolyte penetration and suffer from cracking and peeling-off issues due to their poor tolerance to volume changes, consuming additional electrolyte and material for SEI repair. Here we propose a chemical SEI reinforcement strategy via introducing multiple functional components as SEI components, which have strong interactions with Li-alloy material surface and effectively improve the SEI stability, including its tolerance to volume changes and surface passivation during cycling. Using a modular synthetic approach, we realized a one-step fabrication of diverse components with designed structure and anchoring amount, allowing the facile construction and optimization of the SEI. Si nanoparticle (SiNP) materials were used as the platform for demonstrating this concept. After screening and optimizing the SEI structure using various pre-anchored components, one chemically reinforced SEI (CR-SEI), reinforced by a combination of two functional components with moderate anchoring amount shows significantly improved stability compared to the SEI derived from electrolyte with FEC additives. During cycling, the CR-SEI presents unique and stable chemical composition, resulted form the addtion of pre-designed functional components, which differs from the composition of conventioal SEI. Meanwhile, the CR-SEI also maintains good and durable morphology during cycling. After many cycles, only very limited “SEI accumulation” was observed in the TEM images of SiNP with CR-SEI and the CR-SEI remains thin and uniform. This is in contrast with the poor stability of conventional SEI. Large amount of SEI accumulation and SiNPs decrease in size were observed. Finally, owing to the improved SEI stability, SiNP electrode with CR-SEI presents significantly increased electrochemical performance, including increased 1st cycle Coulombic efficiency (CE), improved cycling CE and capacity retention, and limited increase in electrochemical impedance. Particularly, the SiNP electrode with CR-SEI present much better cycle life in the full-cell system than one containing electrolyte additive improved SEI. Moreover, this strategy has also been applied to GeNP SEI reinforcement with dramatic enhancement of the SEI stability, suggesting its viability for other Li-alloy materials. Owing to the facility and modularity of the synthetic approach, we are also able to further examine more functional components potentially suitable for SEI reinforcement.

Abstract:In recent years, due to its great promise in boosting the energy density of lithium batteries for future energy storage, research on the Li metal anode, as an alternative to the graphite anode in Li‐ion batteries, has gained significant momentum. However, the practical use of Li metal anodes has been plagued by unstable Li (re)deposition and poor cyclability. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to the stabilization of Li metal anodes, the mechanisms of electrochemical (re‐)deposition/dissolution of Li and solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) formation remain elusive. This article highlights the recent mechanistic understandings and observations of Li deposition/dissolution and SEI formation achieved from advanced characterization techniques and simulation methods, and discusses major limitations and open questions in these processes. In particular, the authors provide their perspectives on advanced and emerging/potential methods for obtaining new insights into these questions. In addition, they give an outlook into cutting‐edge interdisciplinary research topics for Li metal anodes. It pushes beyond the current knowledge and is expected to accelerate development toward a more in‐depth and comprehensive understanding, in order to guide future research on Li metal anodes toward practical application. This perspective article highlights recent developments in understanding of the mechanisms of lithium deposition/dissolution and solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) formation and identifies the major limitations and open questions in these processes. It also provides the authors’ perspectives on advanced characterization and simulation methods to promote a more in‐depth and comprehensive understanding, and to guide future research on Li metal anodes toward applications.

Abstract:Anodes for lithium metal batteries, sodium metal batteries, and potassium metal batteries are susceptible to failure due to dendrite growth. This review details the structure–chemistry–performance relations in membranes that stabilize the anodes' solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), allowing for stable electrochemical plating/stripping. Case studies involving Li, Na, and K are presented to illustrate key concepts. "Classical" versus "modern" understandings of the SEI are described, with an emphasis on the new structural insights obtained through novel analytical techniques, including in situ liquid‐secondary ion mass spectroscopy, titration gas chromatography, and tip‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This Review highlights diverse approaches for increasing SEI stability, either by inserting a secondary layer between the native SEI and the separator, or by combining the membrane with a native SEI to form a hybrid composite. Exciting and nonintuitive findings are discussed, such as that the metal anode roughness profoundly affects the SEI structure and stability, or that organic artificial SEI‐layers may be more effective than the native inorganic–organic SEIs. Emerging multifunctional architectures are presented, which serve a dual role as metal hosts and metal surface protection layers. Throughout the Review, fruitful future research directions and the critical areas where there is incomplete understanding are discussed.
