Abstract:In this paper, a switchable circular polarizer based on varactor-loaded metasurface is proposed. With an incident wave of 45° linear polarization (LP) plane wave, the polarization of the transmission wave through this polarizer can be switched between left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) by controlling the bias voltage of the varactors. Simulation results show that the designed circular polarizer exhibits transmission loss better than -1 dB, and phase error within ±5° in frequency band 29.4 - 30.8 GHz.
A Dual-Polarized and Reconfigurable Metasurface for Manipulation of Electromagnetic Waves

Abstract:A dual-polarized and reconfigurable metasurface incorporated voltage-controlled varactor diode for manipulation of electromagnetic waves is proposed. Two varactor diodes are embedded along x- and y-directions, respectively, thus the dispersion response has distinct behavior for different polarizations. Exploiting the anisotropic characteristic, the x- and y-polarized waves can be independently diffused in three dimensions, and the required phase profiles are optimized by the genetic algorithm. Additionally, the functionalities like beam splitting and beam deflection are also presented. All functions can be switched in real time by adjusting the voltage applied on the metasurface from 8.3 GHz to 8.9 GHz. The proposed metasurface has great potential in intelligent stealth missions and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a switchable linear-to-circular polarizer based on varactor-loaded metasurface is proposed. With an incident 45° linear polarization (LP) plane wave, the polarization of the transmission wave through this polarizer can be switched between left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) by controlling the bias voltage of the varactors. Simulation results show that the designed polarizer exhibits transmission losses better than -1 dB, and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of LHCP and RHCP is 1.7GHz (or 5.7%) and 1.5GHz (or 5%), respectively.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for various applications enabled by their strong light manipulation capabilities. Their monolithic designs offer the convenience to incorporate novel natural materials in order to realize advanced electromagnetic (EM) functionalities. Here, based on the usage of the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2). a switchable metasurface that could work at two different working states is proposed. With insulating VO2, we show that helicity-dependent metasurface could be rigorously designed by adopting two phase variables, i.e., initial phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, which is verified by showing an asymmetric photonic spin Hall effect (APSHE). When VO2 goes into the metallic phase (e.g.. by raising the operating temperature above similar to 341K), the loss factor of the unit cell will be enhanced. and in this case with the assistance of multimode resonances, the metasurface will turn into a perfect broadband circular-polarization-insensitive EM absorber. Based on these, switchable beam splitters and focus-lenses have been designed and discussed in the paper. Abstract:In this paper, a terahertz (THz) switchable multifunctional metasurface is proposed to realize polarization conversion and absorption. When vanadium dioxide (VO2) is in the dielectric state, the structure demonstrates polarization conversion with double broadband transmission. The transmittance of the double broadband is greater than 80% in the frequency ranges of 2.05 - 2.38 THz and 3.38 - 3.68 THz, respectively, and the polarization conversion rate (PCR) is greater than 90%. Excellent asymmetric transmission (AT) properties are exhibited by polarization conversion. The transmittance of the double broadband can be modulated dynamically by the pump light through controlling the conductivity of the photosensitive silicon (PS). When VO2 is in the metallic state, the metasurface is switched to be a bidirectional THz absorber for TE and TM wave incidence, and the maximum absorptance of the absorber can reach more than 95%. Furthermore, the absorption is insensitive to the angle of incidence, and the absorption frequency and intensity can be dynamically tuned by changing the polarization angle. By changing the conductivity of the PS, the intensity and frequency of the absorption can also be adjusted. By using the metasurface, we achieved a dynamic multiplexing imaging function for linearly polarized waves. The metasurface shows a new vision for multifunctional THz devices and presents a wide application prospect in the field of THz imaging.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a switchable multifunctional metasurface based on complementary VO 2 -graphene structure. Tuning the state of VO 2 and the Fermi level of graphene, the metasurface can act as broadband half-wave plate (HWP), quarter-wave plate (QWP) or absorber in the same frequency range of 0.65–1.27THz, respectively. In the V 1 G 0 state, the metasurface behaves as a broadband HWP to realize linear-to-linear polarization conversion with the polarization conversion ratio >0.9 in the range of 0.64–1.37THz. In the V 0 G 1 state, the metasurface acts as a broadband QWP achieving linear-to-circular polarization conversion with the ellipticity below −0.9 in the range of 0.65–1.27THz. In the V 1 G 1 state, the metasurface is a broadband absorber with the absorption over 0.9 in the 0.63–1.32THz range. In addition, the physical mechanisms of the metasurface in different states are analyzed through the field and current distributions. Such a switchable multi-functional metasurface can simultaneously achieve high efficiency polarization conversion and absorption, which has potential applications in the integrated terahertz devices.

Abstract:In this article, a novel multimode switchable frequency-selective surface filter/shielding is proposed, featuring a reconfigurable-shared-noncoupling structure and a polarization-independent control function. Compared to most conventional dual-mode polarization-insensitive structures, this design offers the capability to independently control TE and TM waves at different frequencies through four states. According to equivalent circuit models, two basic dual-layer single-polarization structures are applied to achieve the switchable transmission and shielding states for two polarizations at different frequencies, respectively. Based on this, an improved multilayer structure is designed with the orthogonal reconfigurable-noncoupling layers and a shared interlayer. It could control the operating wave without the effect of the cross-polarized wave, which successfully obtains the polarization-independent efficient transmission and full shielding modes on one structure. The proposed structure has the TE- and TM-independent manipulated transmission windows at 3.8 and 5.2 GHz, the full shielding mode within 1-6 GHz, and excellent angular stability up to 60 degrees. Finally, a prototype is manufactured, and the measured results are in good agreement with the simulation ones, demonstrating that the concept of polarization independently controlled active frequency-selective surface has a potential application prospect in radomes and electromagnetic interference shielding.

Abstract:We proposed a bi-functional switchable metasurface based on vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) and photosensitive silicon. The metasurface functions as a transmissive polarization converter in its insulating state with asymmetric transmission characteristics. It attains a remarkable polarization conversion rate (PCR) surpassing 90% and a notable maximum asymmetric transmission (AT) parameter value of 0.73. This performance is observed within the frequency range from 4.31 THz to 7.86 THz. Dynamic regulation of PCR and AT can be achieved by adjusting the conductivity of photosensitive silicon. To illustrate the underlying factor behind the broadband polarization conversion, the surface current distribution is analyzed at 5.96 THz and 6.08 THz. On the other hand, when VO 2 is in the metallic state, the metasurface transforms into a bidirectional absorber with near-perfect absorption in both illumination directions. Under forward incidence of terahertz waves, the absorption rates for the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves are 99.3% at 3.54 THz and 93% at 3.56 THz, respectively. The physical mechanism of near-perfect absorption is explained using impedance matching theory and the electric field distribution. This research expands the applications of transmissive polarization converters within multifunctional metasurfaces, providing new avenues for their practical implementation.

Abstract:We propose a switchable and tunable terahertz metasurface polarization converter based on graphene. The metasurface is composed of a bottom gold film, a lower SiO 2 layer, an intermediate N-type graphene layer, an upper SiO 2 layer, and a top layer of square graphene resonant rings. By using the CST Microwave Studio, we studied their polarization conversion properties. The results show that the metasurface enables a versatile range of functions, including x -to- y linear polarization conversion within the frequency range of 4.23–7 THz, the transformation of linearly polarized waves into right-hand circularly polarized and left-hand circularly polarized waves. Moreover, at 3.873 THz, the metasurface can exhibit circular dichroism (CD) with a high CD value of 0.7. Based on the effect, a strategy to detect three representative avian influenza viruses was proposed and tested, which implies that the metasurface can be applied in biosensing.

Abstract:All-dielectric metasurfaces have led to a surge of activities in the field of polarization converters due to their extremely significant potential in the manipulation of terahertz waves. Herein, a versatile all-dielectric metasurface platform that can realize dual-functional polarization manipulation for orthogonal states of polarization in the terahertz frequency range is proposed. Expanded, such metasurface platform exhibits the properties of a full-wave plate for one circularly polarized light, while a quarter-wave plate for orthogonal circularly polarized light. For experimental demonstrations of strategy verification, several representative metasurfaces consisting of subwavelength-scaled all-silicon elliptical cylinders are designed, fabricated, and characterized to demonstrate the capability of dual-functional polarization manipulation, including bifunctional waveplate, near-field imaging, and focusing. The metasurface platform demonstrated here may provide an alternative perspective for the development of compact, versatile polarization terahertz devices, and the design concept can be extended to other frequency ranges as well.

Abstract:Realizing versatile functionalities in a single photonic device is crucial for photonic integration. We here propose a polarization-switchable and wavelength-controllable multi-functional metasurface. By changing the polarization state of incident light, its functionality can be switched between the flat focusing lens and exciting surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) wave. Interestingly, by tuning the wavelength of incident light, the generated SPP waves can also be controlled at desired interfaces, traveling along the upper or lower interface of the metasurface, or along both of them, depending on whether the incident light satisfies the first or second Kerker condition. This polarization-switchable and wavelength-controllable multifunctional metasurface may provide flexibility in designing tunable or multifunctional metasurfaces and may find potential applications in highly integrated photonic systems.

Abstract:Polarization control is fundamental to the field of optical imaging, and the incorporation of metasurface enhances the design versatility of miniature polarization device by introducing additional degrees of freedom. Based on phase change property of vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) and diatomic structure, this work proposes the method for transforming any given incident polarization into either linear or circular reflected polarization within the terahertz spectrum. Through arranging polarization-converting meta-atoms (PCMs) and polarization-maintaining meta-atoms (PMMs) periodically, the effect of mutual interference enables arbitrary to linear polarization conversion. By utilizing the interference between achiral diatoms, it is possible to achieve a conversion from arbitrary to circular polarization. The introduction of propagation phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase enables wavefront manipulation and generates holograms in a specified reflected polarization channel. When VO 2 is metallic, the metasurface generates a hologram of the letter "X" for the x-polarized reflected wave. As VO 2 is insulating, the metasurface generates a hologram of the letter "T" for the left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) reflected wave. Our work presents a novel polarization converter device with broad application prospects in optical communication and information security.

Abstract:The terahertz technology has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications in various fields. However, the research of functional devices, including polarization converters, remains a major demand for practical applications. In this work, a reflective dual-functional terahertz metadevice is presented, which combines two different polarization conversions through using a switchable metasurface. Different functions can be achieved because of the insulator-to-metal transition of vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ). At room temperature, the metadevice can be regarded as a linear-to-linear polarization convertor containing a gold circular split-ring resonator (CSRR), first polyimide (PI) spacer, continuous VO 2 film, second PI spacer, and gold substrate. The converter possesses a polarization conversion ratio higher than 0.9 and a bandwidth ratio of 81% in a range from 0.912 THz to 2.146 THz. When the temperature is above the insulator-to-metal transition temperature (approximately 68 °C) and VO 2 becomes a metal, the metasurface transforms into a wideband linear-to-circular polarization converter composed of the gold CSRR, first PI layer, and continuous VO 2 film. The ellipticity is close to −1, while the axis ratio is lower than 3 dB in a range of 1.07 THz–1.67 THz. The metadevice also achieves a large angle tolerance and large manufacturing tolerance.

Abstract:Based on the unique insulator-metal phase transition property of vanadium dioxide (VO2), we propose an integrated metasurface with a switchable mechanism between ultra-broadband absorption and polarization conversion, operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The designed metasurface device is constructed using a stacked structure composed of VO2 quadruple rings, a dielectric layer, copper stripes, VO2 film, a dielectric layer, and a copper reflection layer. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that our proposed design, at high temperatures (above 358 K), exhibits an ultra-broadband absorption ranging from 4.95 to 18.39 THz, maintaining an absorptivity greater than 90%, and achieves a relative absorption bandwidth of up to 115%, significantly exceeding previous research records. At room temperature (298 K), leveraging VO2's insulating state, our proposed structure transitions into an effective polarization converter, without any alteration to its geometry. It enables efficient conversion between orthogonal linear polarizations across 3.51 to 10.26 THz, with cross-polarized reflection exceeding 90% and a polarization conversion ratio over 97%. More importantly, its relative bandwidth reaches up to 98%. These features highlight its wide-angle, extensive bandwidth, and high-efficiency advantages for both switching functionalities. Such an ultra-broadband convertible design offers potential applications in optical switching, temperature dependent optical sensors, and other tunable THz devices in various fields.

Abstract:A tunable and multifunctional electromagnetic control metasurface is proposed. The metasurface comprises the graphene sheet and gold open ring, enabling multiband cross-polarization conversion (CPC) and line-to-circular polarization conversion (LTCPC). Simultaneously, it can achieve circular dichroism (CD) with amplitude of 0.99 at 2.28 THz, along with the capability for near-field imaging. The physical mechanism of operation is studied by analyzing surface current distribution and electric field. In addition, because the metasurface exhibits chiral characteristics, appropriate rotation can induce a phase gradient, facilitating a phase coverage of 0–360°. Based on the tunable phase gradient of metasurface, anomalous reflection and vortex beams can be realized.

Abstract:In the terahertz band, how integrating multiple functions into a device with a tiny unit structure is a challenge. In this paper, an optically-controlled multifunctional linear polarization conversion metasurface working in the terahertz band is proposed. The reflection and transmission polarization conversion functions can be realized by irradiating the metasurface with pump light with different wavelengths. The metasurface is designed with a multilayer structure, and a photosensitive semiconductor alone is used to control multiple functions, which makes the manipulation of multifunctional devices easy. When the photosensitive semiconductor germanium (Ge) and silicon (Si) are in different states, the metasurface can realize broadband reflection and transmission polarization conversion functions, the corresponding relative bandwidth are 102.4% and 98.9%, respectively, and the work efficiency can be regulated by pump light with different intensity and wavelength. In addition, the working principle of the metasurface is analyzed by eigenmode theory and surface current distributions. The stability of the metasurface to structural parameters and incident angles are discussed.
