Abstract:Leakages in water distribution systems (WDSs) are a worldwide problem, which can result in an intolerable burden in satisfying the water demands of the consumers. There is an urgent demand to develop technologies that can detect and localize the leakage in a timely and efficient manner. The monitoring data of the WDS is a typical time series, and there is a certain spatiotemporal correlation between the data provided by the devices distributed at different locations of the WDS. This paper proposes a novel model-based method for WDS leakage localization. The method is characterized by (1) developing the dominant sensor sequence for each candidate leakage node to improve the localization accuracy based on the spatial correlation analysis; (2) utilizing multiple time steps of the measurements which are temporal varying correlated; (3) ranking leakage regions and nodes by their possibility to contain the true leakage. A realistic WDS is used to evaluate the performance of the method. Results show that the method can accurately and efficiently localize the leakage.

Abstract:Water distribution networks (WDNs) are prone to infrastructure failures that lead to water loss. This paper presents a practical and efficient leakage detection and localization method based on the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system combined with state estimation. In WDNs, normal node demand patterns, seasonal variations, and leakage can cause pressure sensor values to fluctuate; accordingly, the pressure sensor values in a SCADA system can be regarded as exhibiting a mixture of normal and abnormal fluctuations. To obtain the fluctuation signal arising from leakage, the node demands must first be calibrated. For leakage detection, the proposed method involves comparing the errors between historical monitored values and simulated values to assess whether a change in these errors is due to normal system changes or the impact of leakage. At the leakage location, an emitter coefficient is used to simulate unknown leakage flow. Then, similarity indicators of the leakage locations are constructed using the Euclidian distance, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Jaccard similarity. The leakage location can be determined by comparing these similarity values. The performance of this method was tested on the L-Town WDN provided in the BattLeDIM competition. Our model's ability to quickly and accurately detect and locate leakages was validated on the 2018 data set of leakage events. The model then was applied to predict the times and locations of leakages in 2019, and eight leakages were detected, six of which were true positives.

Abstract:Hydraulic models have emerged as a powerful tool for simulating the real behavior of water distribution systems (WDSs). In using the models for estimating nodal water demands, measurement uncertainty must be considered. A common approach is to use the covariance of measurement noises to quantify the measurement uncertainty. The noise covariance is typically assumed constant and estimated a priori. However, such an assumption is frequently misleading as actual measurement accuracies are affected by measuring instruments and environmental noises. In this study, we develop a variational Bayesian approach for real-time estimation of noise covariance and nodal water demands. The approach can adaptively adjust the noise covariance with the variation of the noise intensity, thereby efficiently avoiding model overfitting. The measurement residual decomposition reveals that this new approach is effective in determining model structural errors caused by topological structure parameterization.

Abstract:Burst events in Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) pose a significant threat to the safety of water supply, leading people to focus on efficient methods for burst localization and prompt repair. This paper proposes a multi-stage burst localization method, which includes preliminary region determination and precise localization analysis. Based on the hydraulic model and spatio-temporal information, the effective sensor sequences and monitoring areas of the nodes are determined. In the first stage, the preliminary burst region is determined based on the monitoring region of sensors and the alarm sensors. In the second stage, localization metrics are used to analyze the dissimilarity degree between burst data from the hydraulic model and the monitoring data from the effective sensors at each node. This analysis helps identify candidate burst nodes and determine their localization priorities. The localization model is tested on the C-Town network to obtain comparative results. The method effectively reduces the burst region, minimizes the search region, and significantly improves the efficiency of burst localization. For precise localization, it accurately localizes the burst event by prioritizing the possibilities of the burst location.

Abstract:This paper proposes a multistage method for burst leak localization through valve operations (VOs) and smart demand metering in district meter areas (DMAs) of water distribution systems (WDSs). Each stage includes partitioning of the DMA into two subregions using VOs and identification of potentially leaking pipes within the subregions through water balance analysis based on smart demand meters. Such a process is performed repeatedly (multiple stages) to narrow down the spatial range for pinpointing leak locations. To improve efficiency, a bisection optimization problem is formulated to localize the minimum leak areas using the lowest number of VOs, which is solved by a graph theory‐based method. The utility of the proposed method is demonstrated using two DMAs (DMA1 and DMA2) of a real WDS with different topological properties. Results show that the proposed method can efficiently localize artificial burst leaks in DMA1 within 7–15% of the total pipe length, implying that the proposed method is theoretically effective in localizing pipe burst leaks. The real application to DMA2 has identified two leak regions with 2.3 and 4.2 km of pipe length (around 3–6% of the entire DMA2) using 18 VOs. These two burst leaks have been subsequently confirmed and pinpointed using listening rods by practitioners of the local water utility. These results indicate that the proposed multistage method is effective and efficient for burst leak localization, which can be promising for wide practical applications due to rapid developments of smart WDSs (e.g., smart demand meters or control valves).

Abstract:In recent decades, research on leak detection and localization in water distribution networks has been an area of growing interest in both water management and fault detection. In the literature, numerous leak localization techniques were developed from model-based methods (such as steady-state and quasi-steady state) and data-driven/machine learning models (e.g. time series modeling, prediction, and classification). However, there is still a need for study on the definition and enumeration of various sources, types, and nature of uncertainties in leak localization modelling processes. In the context of steady-state analysis, this review paper's main objective is to list the uncertainties related to model-based, data-driven and hybrid methods. This review outlines that, for the three classes of methods, the interplay of uncertainties with the modelling approximations jointly influences the localization performance and are often overlooked. Furthermore, realization of modelling assumptions and error propagation is needed for a successful real-world implementation.

Abstract:In the context of smart city development and rapid urbanization worldwide, urban water supply system (UWSS) has been of vital importance to this process. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the transient flow research for UWSS management. This review consists of two aspects as follows. The first aspect is about the development and progress of current transient theory, including transient flow models, unsteady friction and turbulence models, and numerical simulation methods. The other aspect is about the utilization and application of transient-based methods for effective UWSS diagnosis and management, including leakage, discrete and extended partial blockages, unknown branch, and other defects in water pipelines. A total of 228 publications have been reviewed and analyzed in this paper. In addition to the state-of-the-art progress and achievement of the research on transients, the advances and recommendations of future work in this field are also discussed for the development and management of next-generation smart UWSS in the paper.

Abstract:Leakages in water distribution networks have caused considerable waste of water resources. Thus, this study proposes a novel method for hydraulically monitoring and identifying regions where leakages occur in near-real time. A large network is first divided into several identification regions. To exploit a strong constructive and discriminative power, sparse coding is used, thereby adaptively coding the information embedded in observed pressures efficiently and succinctly. And a linear classifier is trained to determine the most likely leakage regions. A benchmark case is presented in this study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results indicate that the proposed method can identify leakage events with enhanced tolerance capability for measurement errors. The method is also partially effective for identifying two simultaneous leakages. Certain practical advice in balancing the number of sensors and regions is also discussed to enhance the application potential of this method.

Abstract:Transients are commonly triggered in urban water distribution networks (WDNs) due to daily system management and operation. While these transients are unlikely to cause catastrophic consequences immediately, frequent occurrences can result in prolonged deterioration of infrastructure safety and life cycles in the long term. To account for such impacts in the design of WDNs, a multi-objective optimization method coupled with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III is proposed in this paper, where two transient-based objectives are incorporated into the WDN design process. Additionally, an engineering design constraint in the decision space is developed to ensure that the sizes of upstream pipes are not smaller than those downstream, thereby improving the engineering practicality of the optimal design solutions. Two WDN cases with transient conditions triggered by pump switching are applied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the widely used reliability metric based on steady-state conditions is unable to fully represent the transient impacts and that upsizing pipes can reduce transient impacts but at the expense of high economic costs. It is also found that optimally designed pipe diameters can be effective to mitigate transient impacts, in addition to the use of traditional protection devices. The proposed method represents the first step in investigating the underlying relationships between WDN design and unsteady flow effects and is a supplement to current WDN design criteria.

Abstract:With the advent of integrated sensor technology (smart flow meters and pressure sensors), various new numerical algorithms for leak localization (a core element of water distribution system operation) have been developed. However, there is a lack of theory regarding the limitations of leak localization. In this work, we contribute to the development of such a theory by introducing an example water network structure with parallel pipes that is tractable for analytical treatment. We define the leak localization problem for this structure and show how many sensors and what conditions are needed for the well-posedness of the problem. We present a formula for the leak position as a function of measurements from these sensors. However, we also highlight the risk of finding false but plausible leak positions in the multiple pipes. We try to answer the questions of how and when the leaking pipe can be isolated. In particular, we show that nonlinearities in the pipes' head loss functions are essential for the well-posedness of the isolation problem. We propose procedures to get around the pitfall of multiple plausible leak positions.

Robust Data-Driven Leak Localization in Water Distribution Networks Using Pressure Measurements and Topological Information

Abstract:This article presents a new data-driven method for locating leaks in water distribution networks (WDNs). It is triggered after a leak has been detected in the WDN. The proposed approach is based on the use of inlet pressure and flow measurements, other pressure measurements available at some selected inner nodes of the WDN, and the topological information of the network. A reduced-order model structure is used to calculate non-leak pressure estimations at sensed inner nodes. Residuals are generated using the comparison between these estimations and leak pressure measurements. In a leak scenario, it is possible to determine the relative incidence of a leak in a node by using the network topology and what it means to correlate the probable leaking nodes with the available residual information. Topological information and residual information can be integrated into a likelihood index used to determine the most probable leak node in the WDN at a given instant k or, through applying the Bayes' rule, in a time horizon. The likelihood index is based on a new incidence factor that considers the most probable path of water from reservoirs to pressure sensors and potential leak nodes. In addition, a pressure sensor validation method based on pressure residuals that allows the detection of sensor faults is proposed.

Abstract:Water distribution networks with dynamically adaptive connectivity offer greater operational flexibility. While this strategy has demonstrated improvements in pressure management and network resiliency, further research is needed to better understand its impact on water quality dynamics. This paper investigates the short-term variability of disinfectant residuals in a real-world distribution network operated with dynamic connectivity. We simulate water quality dynamics under two control configurations with pressure control and automatic flushing valve operations. Our simulation results inform the development of flow variability metrics to reveal the relationship between changing hydraulic conditions and increased water quality dynamics. These metrics can (i) improve observability by supporting the placement of additional water quality monitoring locations and (ii) enhance controllability by enabling the formulation of optimization problems that incorporate hydraulic surrogates for modelling water quality. Furthermore, we validate the identified regions of increased water quality dynamics using continuous disinfectant data from a large-scale experimental programme. Our findings emphasize the need for further analytical and experimental research to manage water quality in distribution networks with dynamically adaptive connectivity and hydraulic control.

Abstract:Urban water supply networks are susceptible to intentional, accidental chemical, and biological pollution, which pose a threat to the health of consumers. In recent years, drinking-water pollution incidents have occurred frequently, seriously endangering social stability and security. The real-time monitoring for water quality can be effectively implemented by placing sensors in the water supply network. However, locating the source of pollution through the data detection obtained by water quality sensors is a challenging problem. The difficulty lies in the limited number of sensors, large number of water supply network nodes, and dynamic user demand for water, which leads the pollution source localization problem to an uncertainty, large-scale, and dynamic optimization problem. In this paper, we mainly study the dynamics of the pollution source localization problem. Previous studies of pollution source localization assume that hydraulic inputs (e.g., water demand of consumers) are known. However, because of the inherent variability of urban water demand, the problem is essentially a fluctuating dynamic problem of consumer’s water demand. In this paper, the water demand is considered to be stochastic in nature and can be described using Gaussian model or autoregressive model. On this basis, an optimization algorithm is proposed based on these two dynamic water demand change models to locate the pollution source. The objective of the proposed algorithm is to find the locations and concentrations of pollution sources that meet the minimum between the analogue and detection values of the sensor. Simulation experiments were conducted using two different sizes of urban water supply network data, and the experimental results were compared with those of the standard genetic algorithm.

Abstract:This work presents the reconstruction of the pressure head map of a water distribution system (WDS). This approach relies on historical data collected from a reduced number of sensors placed at some nodes of the WDS. Thus, a Gaussian regression process is then applied to estimate the pressure head at those nodes without a sensor, which allows the reconstruction of the pressure map for the whole network. Then, for leak diagnosis purposes, a dataset of pressure head maps of the WDN is created considering leaky scenarios, and a correlation method is applied to estimate the leak location. Then, for clarity, the Hanoi network is used to evaluate the performance of this leak diagnosis strategy in a simulation environment, assuming the availability of only three sensors. The results showed the potential for pressure head map reconstruction and leak localization.

Abstract:In many urban areas of the developing world, piped water is supplied only intermittently, as valves direct water to different parts of the water distribution system at different times. The flow is transient, and may transition between free-surface and pressurized, resulting in complex dynamical features with important consequences for water suppliers and users. Here, we develop a computational model of transition, transient pipe flow in a network, accounting for a wide variety of realistic boundary conditions. We validate the model against several published data sets and demonstrate its use on a real pipe network. The model is extended to consider several optimization problems motivated by realistic scenarios. We demonstrate how to infer water flow in a small pipe network from a single pressure sensor, and show how to control water inflow to minimize damaging pressure transients.

Abstract:Urban water distribution networks (WDNs) have wide range and intricate topology, which include leakage, pipe burst and other abnormal states during production and operation. With the continuous development of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology in recent years, the means of monitoring the WDNs by using wireless sensor network technology has gradually received attention and extensive research. Most of the existing researches select the deployment location of sensors according to the hydraulic state of the WDNs, but the connectivity and topology between the nodes of the WDNs are not fully considered and analyzed. In this study, a new method that can integrate the topological features and hydraulic model information of the WDN is proposed to solve the problem of optimal sensor placement. First, the method preprocesses the covariance matrix of the pressure sensitivity matrix of the water distribution network by a diffusion kernel-based data prefiltering method and obtains the new network topology weights and its Laplacian matrix under the constraints of the network topology through a data-based graphical Laplacian learning method. Then, the sensor placement problem is transformed into a matrix minimum eigenvalue constraint problem by the graph Laplace regularization (GLR)-based method, and finally the selection of sensor nodes is accomplished by the method based on Gershgorin Disc Alignment (GDA). The proposed strategy is tested on a passive Hanoi network, an active Net 3 network, and a larger network, PA2, and is compared with some existing methods. The results show that the proposed solution achieves good performance in three different leak localization methods.

Abstract:Leakages from damaged or deteriorated buried pipes in urban water distribution networks may cause significant socio-economic and environmental impacts, such as depletion of water resources and sinkhole events. Sinkholes are often caused by internal erosion and fluidization of the soil surrounding leaking pipes, with the formation of soil cavities that may eventually collapse. This in turn causes road disruption and building foundation damage, with possible victims. While the loss of precious water resources is a well-known problem, less attention has been paid to anthropogenic sinkhole events generated by leakages in water distribution systems. With a view to improving urban smart resilience and sustainability of urban areas, this study introduces an innovative framework to localize leakages based on a Machine learning model (for the training and evaluation of candidate sets of pressure sensors) and a Genetic algorithm (for the optimal sensor set positioning) with the goal of detecting and mitigating potential hydrogeological urban disruption due to water leakage in the most sensitive/critical locations. The application of the methodology on a synthetic case study from literature and a real-world case scenario shows that the methodology also contributes to reducing the depletion of water resources.
