Abstract:Direct conversion of ethyl 2-methylphenyl ethers into 2-methylbenzofurans was achieved by C(sp3)–H/C(sp3)–H dehydrogenative cyclization promoted by an iridium catalyst system using DTBM-SEGPHOS (L1) as a ligand and tert-butylethylene (TBE) as a hydrogen scavenger. The reaction proceeds through dehydrogenation (DH) of the ethoxy group to form a vinyloxy group and subsequent intramolecular C(sp3)–H addition of the 2-methyl group on the aromatic ring to the vinyloxy group. Dehydroaryloxylation (DHA), a competitive process in catalytic C(sp3)–H conversion of alkyl aryl ethers, was effectively suppressed by the presence of a substituent at the 6-position of the aromatic ring. Functional groups on the aromatic ring, including B(pin), α-styryl, acetyl, phenylacetyl, fluoro, trifluoromethyl, methoxy, and dimethylamino groups, were tolerated under the reaction conditions, whereas a cyano group induced DHA. The C(sp3)–H/C(sp3)–H dehydrogenative cyclization was applicable to ethyl 2-methylphenyl sulfide, N-ethyl-2-methylaniline, and ethyl(2-methylphenyl)silane, by which S-, N-, and Si-containing five-membered rings were constructed. In addition to a 2-methyl group on the aromatic rings, 2-tert-butyl and 2-trimethylsilyl groups participated in the C(sp3)–H/C(sp3)–H dehydrogenative cyclization of ethyl aryl ethers to afford oxygen-containing six-membered rings.
