Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:Electron transfer process plays a critical role in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Owing to low redox activity of Zn(II) cation under catalytic conditions, it remains a challenge to use Zn(II) complexes as efficient molecular catalysts for CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we overcome the obstacle and demonstrate two polypyridyl Zn(II) complexes can be utilized for selective photoreduction of CO2 to CO. Thanks to more efficient ligand-based electron transfer, the polypyridyl Zn(II) complex modified with electron-donating carbazole groups displays a higher TON of CO up to 116 than the other unsubstituted polypyridyl Zn(II) complex, which is among the most efficient Zn(II) complexes molecular catalysts in CO2 photoreduction. Photocatalytic mechanism has been studied by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and computational calculations. These results show a promising way to develop Zn(II) complexes for efficient CO2 photoreduction through ligand modification and ligand-based electron transfer.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a renewable and clean energy, and photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution technology is a promising technical means to solve the development problem. In this study, the ternary composite Co 8 POM@MXene-CdS hybrid catalyst was constructed and used for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Under the condition of AM 1.5G simulated sunlight, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of the ternary composite was 8.13 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was more than 25 times higher than that of the bare CdS. By means of synchronous illumination X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SI-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was proved that the loading of MXene and Co 8 POM improved the photogenerated carrier separation and immigration efficiency on CdS. The photogenerated electrons transfer from CdS to MXene. Co 8 POM containing the {Co 4 O 3 } quasi-cubane, as an oxidation co-catalyst, accepts photogenerated holes from CdS to catalyze the oxidation reaction of TEOA, which improves the photocatalytic hydrogen production activity and the stability of CdS.

Unveiling the role of proton concentration in dinuclear metal complexes for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:The reaction kinetics of photocatalytic CO2 reduction is highly dependent on the transfer rate of electrons and protons to the CO2 molecules adsorbed on catalytic centers. Studies on uncovering the proton effect in catalysts on photocatalytic activity of CO2 reduction are significant but rarely reported. In this paper, we, from the molecular level, revealed that the photocatalytic activity of CO2 reduction is closely related to the proton availability in catalysts. Specifically, four dinuclear Co(II) complexes based on Robson-type ligands with different number of carboxylic groups (-nCOOH; n = 0, 2, 4, 6) were designed and synthesized. All these complexes show photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction to CO in a water-containing system upon visible-light illumination. Interestingly, the CO yields increase positively with the increase of the carboxylic-group number in dinuclear Co(II) complexes. The one containing -6COOH shows the best photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction to CO, with the TON value reaching as high as 10,294. The value is 1.8, 3.4, and 7.8 times higher than those containing -4COOH, -2COOH, and -0COOH, respectively. The high TON value also makes the dinuclear Co(II) complex with -6COOH outstanding among reported homogeneous molecular catalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Control experiments and density functional theory calculation indicated that more carboxylic groups in the catalyst endow the catalyst with more proton relays, thus accelerating the proton transfer and boosting the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This study, at a molecular level, elucidates that more carboxylic groups in catalysts are beneficial for boosting the reaction kinetics of photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Two new charge-neutral iridium complexes, [Ir(tfm-ppy)2(N,N'-diisopropyl-benzamidinate)] (1) and [Ir(tfm-ppy)2(N,N'-diisopropyl-4-diethylamino-3,5-dimethyl-benzamidinate)] (2) (tfm-ppy=4-trifluoromethyl-2-phenylpyridine) containing an amidinate ligand and two phenylpyridine ligands were designed and characterised. The photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviours and emission quenching properties of these species were investigated. In concert with the cobalt catalyst [Co(bpy)3]2+, members of this new class of iridium complexes enable the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from mixed aqueous solutions via an oxidative quenching pathway and display long-term photostability under constant illumination over 72 h; one of these species achieved a relatively high turnover number of 1880 during this time period. In the case of complex 1, the three-component homogeneous photocatalytic system proved to be more efficient than a related system containing a charged complex, [Ir(tfm-ppy)2(dtb-bpy)]+ (3, dtb-bpy=4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl). In combination with a rhodium complex as a water reduction catalyst, the performances of the systems using both complexes were also evaluated, and these systems exhibited a more efficient catalytic propensity for water splitting than did the cobalt-based systems that have been studied previously.
Effect of metal centers of complexes bearing bipyridine ligand for electrochemical‐ and photochemical‐driven hydrogen evolution

Abstract:In this work, two complexes with bipyridine ligand, [Co (bpy)2(SCN)2] 1 and [Ni (bpy)2(SCN)2] 2 have been prepared and well determined by single crystal X-crystallography, power X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR spectra, and so forth. Both exhibit good catalytic activity for electrochemical- and photochemical driven-hydrogen evolution. Complexes 1 and 2 can electro-catalyze H2 evolution from a neutral buffer (pH 7.0) with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 699.6 and 1469 mol H2/mol catalyst/h at an overpotential (OP) of 837.6 mV, respectively. Under blue light (λ = 469 nm), together with CdS nanorods (CdS NRs) as a photosensitizer, and ascorbic acid as a sacrificial electron donor, complexes 1 and 2 also can photo-catalyze H2 evolution from water. Under an optimal condition, the turnover numbers (TONs) reach 10,600 (complex 1) and 15,180 (complex 2) mol of H2 per mol of catalyst during 48-h irradiation, respectively. The average apparent quantum yields (AQYs) of complex 1 and complex 2 are 15.07% and 22.7%, respectively. Electrochemical and photochemical investigations show that the nickel complex has a higher activity for hydrogen evolution than that of the cobalt complex. These results can provide a new insight into design and manufacture of new H2-production catalyst.

Abstract:Six cobalt and manganese corrole complexes were synthesized and examined as single-site catalysts for water splitting. The simple cobalt corrole [Co(tpfc)(py)(2)] (1, tpfc = 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl) corrole, py = pyridine) catalyzed both water oxidation and proton reduction efficiently. By coating complex 1 onto indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, the turnover frequency for electrocatalytic water oxidation was 0.20 s(-1) at 1.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl, pH = 7), and it was 1010 s(-1) for proton reduction at -1.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl, pH = 0.5). The stability of 1 for catalytic oxygen evolution and hydrogen production was evaluated by electrochemical, UV-vis and mass measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), which confirmed that 1 was the real molecular catalyst. Titration and UV-vis experiments showed that the pyridine group on Co dissociated at the beginning of catalysis, which was critical to subsequent activation of water. A proton-coupled electron transfer process was involved based on the pH dependence of the water oxidation reaction catalyzed by 1. As for manganese corroles 2-6, although their oxidizing powers were comparable to that of 1, they were not as stable as 1 and underwent decomposition at the electrode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that water oxidation by 1 was feasible through a proposed catalytic cycle. The formation of an O-O bond was suggested to be the rate-determining step, and the calculated activation barrier of 18.1 kcal mol(-1) was in good agreement with that obtained from experiments.

Abstract:The photoreduction of water to hydrogen represents a promising method for generating sustainable clean fuel. The molecular processes of this photoreduction require an effective light absorber, such as the ruthenium polybipyridine complex, to collect and convert the solar energy into a usable chemical form. In the search for a highly active and stable photosensitizer (PS), iridium complexes are attractive because of their desirable photophysical characteristics. Herein, a series of homoleptic tris-cyclometalated iridium complexes, based on different 2-phenylpyridine ligands, were utilized as PSs in photocatalytic systems for hydrogen production with [Rh(dtb-bpy)(3)](PF6)(3) (dtb-bpy=4,4-di-tert-butyl-2,2-dipyridyl) serving as the water reduction catalyst (WRC) and triethanolamine (TEOA) as the electron donor. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these complexes were systematically investigated. The excited state of neutral iridium complexes (PS*) could not be quenched by using TEOA as an electron donor, but they could be quenched by using [Rh(dtb-bpy)(3)](PF6)(3) as an electron acceptor, indicating that the PS* quenching pathway in catalytic reactions was most likely an oxidative quenching process. A set of long-lived and highly active systems for hydrogen evolution were obtained in Ir-III-Rh-III-TEOA systems. These systems maintained their activity for more than 72h with visible-light irradiation, and the total turnover number was up to 3040. Comparative studies indicated that the photocatalytic performance of these homoleptic tris-cyclometalated iridium compounds was superior to that of the cationic iridium complex [Ir(ppy)(2)(bpy)](PF6) (ppy=2-phenylpyridine, bpy=2,2-dipyridyl) (4), which was used as a reference. The significant increase in the photocatalytic efficiencies was in part attributed to the higher photostability of the neutral Ir-III complexes. This assumption was supported by their different coordination modes, photophysical, and electrochemical properties.
Synergistic Promotion Effect of ZnCoS Solid Solution and Co 1– x S on Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of the CdS Composite

Abstract:Photocatalytic reactions over effective photocatalysts are attractive to explore clean hydrogen energy from water with the utilization of solar energy. Ternary Co1-xS@ZnCoS/CdS (ZCS/CdS) composites are constructed as photocatalysts through the hydrothermal formation of Co1-xS and ZnCoS nanoparticles on CdS nanorods. Superior to the binary Co1-xS/CdS composite, ZCS/CdS shows the improved photocatalytic activity with a hydrogen production rate of 58.4 mmol·g-1·h-1, which is 31.4 and 2.1 times higher than those of CdS and Co1-xS/CdS, respectively. Different from binary Co1-xS/CdS, the participation of a small amount of zinc favors the formation of ZnCoS solid solution in ZCS/CdS. A synergistic promotion effect of ZnCoS and Co1-xS is confirmed due to tight heterojunctions among Co1-xS, ZnCoS, and CdS in ZCS/CdS. The unique heterostructure of ZCS/CdS benefits its enhanced absorption ability of visible light, accelerating the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and the electron transfer. ZCS/CdS exhibits the strong reduction ability and superior photocatalytic stability due to the role of double Z-scheme electron transfer pathways in the ternary composite. This work provides a suitable way to tune noble metal-free composite photocatalysts for efficient H2 production.

Abstract:Noble-metal-free systems with bio-inspired diiron dithiolate mimics of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase active site, namely, [(μ-pdt)Fe(2) (CO)(5) L] [pdt=propanedithiolate; L=P(CH(2) OH)(3) (1), P(CH(3) )(3) (2)], as water reduction catalysts with xanthene dyes as photosensitizers and triethylamine as a sacrificial electron donor were studied for visible-light-driven water reduction to hydrogen. These systems display good catalytic activities with the efficiencies in hydrogen evolution of up to 226 turnovers for 1, if Eosin Y was used as the photosensitizer in an environmentally benign solvent (EtOH/H(2) O) after 15 h of irradiation (λ>450 nm) under optimal conditions. Under all of the conditions adopted, 1 that has a water soluble phosphine ligand, P(CH(2) OH)(3) displayed a higher efficiency than 2, which bears a PMe(3) ligand. The photoinduced electron transfer in the systems was studied using fluorescence, transient absorption, time-resolved UV/Vis, and in situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. A new electron-transfer mechanism is proposed for hydrogen evolution by these iron-based photocatalytic systems.
Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction over Co(II) Species Modified CdS in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into value-added chemical fuels has been a thorny, challenging and long-term project in the environmental/energy fields due to the low efficiency, especially in the inorganic aqueous environment. In this report, we present a facial approach to modify CdS with Co(II) species through controlling decarboxylation of the Co-EDTA precursor for improved CO2 reduction. Performance evaluation and microstructure characterization reveal that the resulted tetra-coordinated Co(II) modified CdS exhibits the most optimized CO evolution rate of 9.8 mu mol h(-1) (i.e., 392 mu mol h(-1) g((catalyst))(-1) with TOF of 7.94 h(-1)) in aqueous solution under visible light, where the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction is significantly inhibited. Further investigation implies that the fully utilized Co(II) active sites, the tetra-coordinated Co(II) species, the favorable interaction between CO2 and Co(II) sites and efficient charge transferring ensured the high efficiency and improved selectivity. This work would provide a good strategy for the structure engineering of catalytic site to improve photocatalytic CO2 reduction.
Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to CO by Molecular Cobalt–Polypyridine Diamine Complexes

Abstract:Cobalt complexes have previously been reported to exhibit high faradaic efficiency in reducing CO2 to CO. Herein, we synthesized capsule-like cobalt–polypyridine diamine complexes [Co(L1)](BF4)2 (1) and [Co(L2) (CH3CN)](BF4)2 (2) as catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. Under catalytic conditions, complexes 1 and 2 demonstrated the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO in the presence or absence of CH3OH as a proton source. Experimental and computational studies revealed that complexes 1 and 2 undergo two consecutive reversible one-electron reductions on the cobalt core, followed by the addition of CO2 to form a metallocarboxylate intermediate [CoII(L)–CO22−]0. This crucial reaction intermediate, which governs the catalytic cycle, was successfully detected using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). In situ Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis showed that methanol can enhance the rate of carbon–oxygen bond cleavage of the metallocarboxylate intermediate. DFT studies on [CoII(L)–CO22−]0 have suggested that the doubly reduced species attacks CO2 on the C atom through the dz2 orbital, while the interaction with CO2 is further stabilized by the π interaction between the metal dxz or dxz orbital with p orbitals on the O atoms. Further reductions generate a metal carbonyl intermediate [CoI(L)–CO]+, which ultimately releases CO.

Abstract:We achieve a successful transition of Co4O4 molecules from a homogeneous to a heterogeneous system by modifying the functional groups at their termini. The resulting cocatalyst, denoted as Co4O4-poly, not only preserved the catalytic sites of Co4O4 molecules but also exhibited outstanding performance in catalyzing water oxidation.

Abstract:The ideal solution to the energy shortage problem is to split water into hydrogen (H2) utilizing solar-driven semiconductor photocatalytic technology. Nevertheless, severe carrier recombination is the major cause of decreased activity over photocatalysts. Construction of internal electric field (IEF) by coupling semiconductor with metal co-catalyst can effectively promote carrier separation. Herein, Co@C with the Co encapsulated in the C layer as a co-catalyst anchored on the surface of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets via a facile electrostatic self-assembly strategy, achieving outstanding photocatalytic water splitting into H2 under simulated solar irradiation (AM 1.5G) with the production rate of 18.1 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 109.7 times higher than that of bare ZIS without assisted of Pt. Enhancement of photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of Co@C/ZIS is mainly attributed to the construction of giant IEF (4.6-fold higher than ZIS) and suitable environment for hydrogen adsorption and desorption (ΔGH* ∼ 0), which endows the following several advantages: (i) accelerating the migration and separation of photo-generated charges; (ii) improving the hydrogen release kinetics. Our work not only provides a design idea for facile preparation of a high-efficient composite photocatalyst, but also expands the application range of transition metal@carbon as a co-catalyst in energy photocatalysis.

Abstract:The solar-driven hydrogen evolution from water splitting provides an ideal protocol for alleviating the global energy crisis and environmental issues. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is often limited by poor light-absorption ability, sluggish electron-hole kinetics, and ineffective charge transfer. Herein, a pyridine-contained covalent triazine framework was delicately designed to facilitate single-atom Co immobilization (Co 1 -PCTF), exhibiting an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 2562.4 μmol‧g -1 ‧h -1 , which is much higher than that of the pristine CTF. It has been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated that the introduction of the pyridine ring significantly enhanced the π-conjugation degree, optimizing the band structure and extending the visible-light absorption. The highly dispersed Co atoms show notable electron-rich property, promoting charge separation and offering abundant active sites for H + reduction. Additionally, the robust Co-N bridge with a large potential difference creates a built-in electronic field for efficient directional transfer from organic substrate to the Co site. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of CTF-based advanced photocatalysts with high activity and durability.

Water-induced Selectivity Switching and Steric Control of Activity in Photochemical CO2 Reduction Catalyzed by RhCp*(bpy) Derivatives

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formic acid (HCOOH) was investigated in either organic or aqueous/organic media by employing three newly synthesized water-soluble Rh(Cp*)(n,n’-dihydroxy-2,2’-bipyridine) (n = 4, 5, or 6) in the presence of [Ru(bpy)3]2+, 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH) and triethanolamine (TEOA). Through studying the electron-donating effects of two hydroxyl groups introduced to the bipyridyl ligand, we found that the hydroxyl group positions of the catalyst greatly affect both the catalytic efficiency and selectivity in CO2 reduction. More importantly, the HCOOH selectivity shows a dramatic increase from 14% to 83% upon switching the solvent media from pure organic to aqueous/organic mixture, where the H2 selectivity shows a reverse phenomenon. The enhanced HCOOH selectivity and the drastic decrease in the apparent H2 yield are well rationalized by the fact that the catalytic CO2 hydrogenation by the evolved H2 simultaneously proceeds as a dark catalytic reaction, which was also separately investigated under the dark conditions. Our DFT studies unveil that the exceptionally large structural strain given by the steric contacts between the 6,6’-dihydroxyl groups and the Cp* moiety plays a significant role in bringing about an outstanding catalytic performance of the 6,6’-subsituted derivative. The intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations on the hydride transfer steps leading to generate formate together the heterolytic H2 cleavage steps leading to afford the key hydridorhodium intermediates afford the results useful to interpret the observed phenomena. This study represents the first report on the water-induced high selectivity in CO2-to-HCOOH conversion, shedding a new light on the strategy to control the efficiency and selectivity in CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The photocatalytic performances of water oxidation were usually carried out in two different systems, photosensitizer and non-photosensitizer systems. There is few report about the same catalyst used in two systems and therefore it is of great significant to compare its role of the same catalyst in two systems and explore its different reaction mechanisms. In this work, first 4 kinds of metallic Co microparticles were obtained by different reduction methods through hydrothermal processes, and Co@Co3O4 core-shell microparticles (1–4) were obtained from these metallic Co microparticles oxidized in air or in the reacting solution in situ. The core-shell structure of 1 was characterized by a series of analytical techniques. 1–4 exhibited excellent activities and stabilities in the [Ru(bpy)3]2+/S2O8 2−/light system when they were used as catalysts for the photocatalytic water oxidation. The maximum O2 evolution of 1 after 20 min’s illumination was 98.2 μmol, the O2 yield was 65.5%, the initial turnover frequency was 6.6 × 10−3, the initial quantum efficiency (Φ QY initial) was 15.0% higher than Co (8.3%), CoO (11.7%), Co2O3 (1.2%), Co3O4 (2.8%) and 5 (2.2%). Even after the sixth run, the catalytic activity of recovered 1 still remained 85.1% of initial activity. In addition, the photocatalytic performances of 1 in the [Ru(bpy)3]2+/S2O8 2−/light system and S2O8 2−/light system were compared for the first time. In the non-photosensitizer system, 1 shows bifunctional roles and acts as optical absorption center and active catalytic site, and oxygen evolution rate is lower and it takes longer time. In the photosensitizer system, 1 only acts as a catalyst, the photosensitizer enhances the light absorption and promotes water oxidation reaction with higher O2 yield and QE, meanwhile the photosensitizer brings the defect of high cost and instability into the system. Based on the results the two different reaction mechanisms were deeply discussed.
